Launched in conjunction with the company's Business Consulting Services division, the program will be limited to four specific services at first. Those services will include data management, business processes, analytics and experimental economics. Horn has high hopes for the program's capacity to change customers' businesses. But he also hopes it affects IBM Research's way of thinking, by gradually changing the group's focus on product development to solving customers' problems. This shift would likely open up new areas of research that had previously gone unnoticed or untapped, he said.
"If we're right, this will both change the agenda for (information technology) research in the industry...and it will also potentially change how services companies think about going to market," Horn said. So far, IBM has the monopoly on selling this kind of expertise, but Hewlett-Packard is likely to follow. The Redmond-based software giant also plans to limit the "critical" rating on security alerts to customers because of fears that too many high-level alerts were being issued. Instead of issuing a "critical" rating on vulnerability warnings, Microsoft has modified its Severity Rating Criteria to specify clearly which bugs needed to be addressed immediately.
The Department of Transportation, whose computer systems guide commercial aircraft and allocate millions of dollars in highway funding, received the lowest score, 28 out of a possible 100. Stung by a series of electronic break-ins and Internet-based attacks, Congress has voted to triple spending on cybersecurity research efforts while the Bush administration is pulling together a much-publicized set of guidelines for businesses and individuals. But the government's own systems remain wide open, the General Accounting Office found. Of the 24 government agencies surveyed, 15 received failing grades, while only three received a grade of C or higher. Six agencies improved their ranking over last year, but six others had lower grades.
When reviewing the DMCA, the librarian of Congress is required to consider the impact that the anticircumvention sections have "on criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research (and) the effect of circumvention of technological measures on the market for or value of copyrighted works."

While Marengi declined to discuss Opteron in depth, he noted that the benchmark scores of Itanium are relatively strong and that the path for adoption among corporate customers seems inevitable.

IBM will integrate special self-managing features into the new supercomputer, allowing for ease of administration and greater system reliability. With the IBM self-discovery feature, ASCI Purple will be able to automatically locate and register thousands of components in the system, freeing administrators to do other tasks. The new POWER5 processors will detect and recover errors without a technician’s intervention. If the system detects repeated errors it will move the workload to another part of the machine.
