Slashdot schrijft dat de overeenkomst waarmee je als onschuldige gebruiker van Microsoft's Passport dienst akkoord moet gaan een aantal erg beangstigende zinnen bevat. Het komt er op neer dat alle gegevens die op de site of partners daarvan worden ingevoerd eigendom worden van Microsoft en dat het bedrijf er vervolgens zo'n beetje alles mee mag doen. Onder andere MSN Messenger en Hotmail vallen onder de Passport diensten en de mensen bij Slashdot zien dit daarom als een poging om een enorme database met persoonlijke informatie te creeëren. Daarmee komen ook meteen vraagtekens te staan bij de .NET service Hailstorm. Er zullen weinig mensen zijn die zin hebben om hun gegevens, wachtwoorden en bestanden op te slaan bij een bedrijf dat zichzelf deze rechten toekent:

By posting messages, uploading files, inputting data, submitting any feedback or suggestions, or engaging in any other form of communication with or through the Passport Web Site, you warrant and represent that you own or otherwise control the rights necessary to do so and you are granting Microsoft and its affiliated companies permission to:

• Use, modify, copy, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, reproduce, publish, sublicense, create derivative works from, transfer, or sell any such communication.

Hoewel Slashdot en The Register niet bekend staan om hun goede relatie met Microsoft staat de tekst toch werkelijk in de overeenkomst, waardoor het bedrijf inderdaad zoveel misbruik van je persoonlijke gegevens kan maken als ze maar willen. De grote vraag is echter of ze dat ook écht willen doen of dat het er alleen instaat omdat men een allesdekkende overeenkomst wilde opstellen. De bekende fabrikant van waterkoel spulletjes, Danger Den, heeft gisteren op haar site informatie geplaatst over een tweetal nieuwe waterblokken voor Socket A CPU’s. De nieuwe Maze 2.1 en 2.2 maken gebruik van de 4 gaten die rond elke SocketA CPU in het moederbord zitten om het blok stevig te kunnen monteren. Het bijzondere aan de Maze 2.2 is dat hij komt met een coldplate die ruimte biedt voor twee peltier elementen. Daarnaast kan je de coldplate stevig vastschroeven aan het waterblok om zo een grote druk op de peltier te zetten wat de wamteweerstand kleiner maakt. Voor de watjes onder ons hebben ze ook nog de Maze 2.1 die ruimte biedt voor slechts één peltier element :

Het Amerikaanse VisionTek heeft aangekondigd dat het in een aantal fasen de consumenten-markt wil betreden. Het bedrijf is één van de grootste leveranciers van videokaarten aan OEM's ter wereld en wil haar bewezen kwaliteit vanaf nu ook direct aan eindgebruikers beschikbaar stellen. Daarmee zijn ze het enige bedrijf uit de Verenigde Staten dat kaarten met nVidia chipsets rechtstreeks aan gebruiker aanbiedt. De eerste fase van het plan is al gerealiseerd; de GeForce2 MX en Vanta 16 AGP kaarten liggen op dit moment in de winkels. Volgende maand moet een GeForce3 volgen. Of men ook van plan is naar de Benelux te exporteren is nog onbekend:

Techweb heeft een artikel gepost met meer details over de plannen van Microsoft met het Tablet PC platform. De Tablet PC is een soort van digitaal kladblok waarmee je bijvoorbeeld vanuit je luie stoel via een draadloos netwerk tweakotine kunt bijtanken. Vorige week demonstreerde Microsoft op de WinHEC 2001 een onder Windows XP draaiend prototype met een 10,4" TFT LCD touchscreen en onderhuids een 600MHz Transmeta TM5600 processor, 128MB RAM en een 10GB grote harddisk. Microsoft geeft OEMs de vrijheid om zelf invulling te geven aan de hardware keuze van hun Tablet PC concept.

De Tablet PC beschikt volgens Microsoft over het beste handschrift herkennings programma ter wereld. Deze software kan niet alleen handschrift in tekst omzetten, maar ook handgeschreven notities opslaan en later bewerken. Inmiddels heeft Microsoft 300 Tablet PC prototypes gebouwd, waarvan 40 exemplaren voor evaluatie aan zakelijke klanten zijn gegeven. Volgend jaar kunnen we de eerste Tablet PC's op de markt verwachten:

Een Zweedse onderzoeker beweert een doorbraak te hebben op het gebied van muizen. Zijn ontwerp moet namelijk de kans op RSI aanzienlijk verminderen, zonder het gebruiksgemak te verminderen. Het apparaatje ziet er uit als een soort vulpen in een potje inkt, maar is desondanks voorzien van drie knoppen en een scrollwheel. Hoewel je zou verwachten dat het werkt als een joystick is het ding van een optische sensor voorzien, je moet hem dus over je bureau heen schuiven net als een normale muis. Extra voordeel daarvan is dat je er snel aan kan wennen en er makkelijker mee kan tekenen of schrijven dan met een gewone muis. De muis kan doormiddel van USB of PS/2 op de computer worden aangesloten en er worden drivers voor Windows en Macintosch bijgeleverd:

ZDNet schrijf dat de twee chips die nVidia heeft ontwikkeld voor de Microsoft XBox volgende maand in volumeproductie zullen gaan. De XGPU en MCPX zullen bij TSMC worden gebakken op een 0.15 micron procédé. De XGPU zorgt, zoals de naam doet vermoeden, voor het grafische gedeelte en de MCPX is een soort van geïntegreerde northbridge die onder andere voor het geluid zorgt. Er zullen minsten een paar miljoen chips worden gebakken en de eerste XBox’jes zullen in de zomer van de lopende band af komen rollen:

Nvidia, the graphics chip maker, plans to begin manufacturing graphics and communications chips for Microsoft's Xbox video game console next month, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

Dan Vivoli, the company's senior vice president of marketing, told the paper that Nvidia will begin manufacturing at least several million of the specialised chips with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company in May, with complete Xbox units beginning to roll off the assembly lines this summer.

The console, which analysts have estimated will not turn a profit for Microsoft for at least three years, will be launched in Japan and the US this autumn, with a European launch following next spring. The console competes against Sony's already-launched PlayStation2 and Nintendo's upcoming Game Cube.

Gisteren is bij CNNfn bekend gemaakt dat de drie grootste platenlabels samen met RealNetworks een nieuwe dienst op internet willen gaan aanbieden. De precieze vorm van de service is nog niet helemaal duidelijk, maar waarschijnlijk is het de bedoeling dat een vaste maandelijkse bijdrage neergelegd wordt door klanten, die in ruil daarvoor toegang krijgen tot een database met muziekbestanden. Het nieuw op te richten bedrijf MusicNet is het resultaat van meer dan een jaar onderhandelen tussen diverse partijen en kan volgens de oprichters een nieuw tijdperk van mediadistributie inluiden, iets dat al lang geleden werd voorspeld:

MusicNet will operate as a stand-alone independent company and will license its "private-label" platform to companies seeking to sell music subscription services under their own brands. MusicNet's catalog also will include material licensed from other independent and major record labels.

Initially, the company will license its platform to America Online and RealNetworks, each of which plans to launch branded online subscription services later this year. However, it also will license to other distribution outlets, including beleaguered file-swapping service Napster, provided such outlets satisfy legal, copyright and security concerns.

MacOS Rumors meldt dat Apple binnen tien dagen een update voor MacOS X zal uitbrengen. MacOS X werd op 24 maart gereleased, ondanks het feit dat de eerste versie van het besturingsysteem nog een groot aantal tekortkomingen en ontbrekende functionaliteit kent. De MacOS X 10.0.1 update is de eerste in een reeks van updates die deze gebreken moeten oplossen.

De gedeeltelijke 4L5 build van de 10.0.1 update circuleert al enige dagen rond op het net. Naast de gebruikelijke bugfixes kunnen MacOS X gebruikers een aantal optimalisaties verwachten die vooral de harddisk performance verbeteren. Verder zal de update geleverd worden met nieuwe third-party hardware drivers. Het probleem met het hoge stroomverbruik in sleep-mode is volgens MacOS Rumors nog niet uit de wereld geholpen:

• Significant but not major optimizations to the core OS, several of which may affect G3 users more than G4s. Application launch times and file moves/copies will apparently be the most accelerated operations.
• A fix for a common problem where applications may not be able to properly read and write to their preference files.
• Sound and brightness controls on Powerbook and iBook keyboards will work consistently, unlike the present state in which this functionality is somewhat of a crapshoot.
• Sometimes under 10.0, Classic will load its extensions even if the System Preferences setting for Classic is configured to disable extensions. 10.0.1 should fix this.
• Finder window resizing should be accelerated, but may still need additional work.
• Finder view settings will be more consistent.
• Numerous new third-party hardware drivers will be included.

News.com heeft naar aanleiding van de release van API's PCI-to-HyperTransport bridge een artikel geschreven over de toepassingsgebieden van AMD's HyperTransport technologie. HyperTransport ondervindt hevige concurrentie van andere next-generation I/O communicatie standaarden, zoals Infiniband en 3GIO. Wat deze technologiën niet kunnen bieden en HyperTransport wél, is het feit dat HyperTransport nu al in de praktijk toegepast kan worden.

Een aantal vooraanstaande bedrijven, waaronder ATi, Broadcom, Cisco Systems, nVidia en Sun hebben toegezegd dat zij de technologie in hun toekomstige producten zullen toepassen. nVidia maakt zoals bekend gebruik van HyperTransport in de Crush chipset en Broadcom, PMC-Sierra en Sandcraft zijn van plan om MIPS processors te ontwikkelen die via HyperTransport communiceren. MIPS CPU's worden veel toegepast in high-end netwerk apparatuur. Voorbeelden zijn routers en optische switches:

Bij overclockers.com is een verhaal verschenen over een gekke Fin (ja, dat lees je goed: geen Jappaner ) die zijn Thunderbird heeft gekoeld met vloeibare stikstof. De gebruikte hardware was een 1GHz AXIA Thunderbird, een Abit KT7A met voltage mod en Apacer PC133 RAM. Met behulp van de vloeibare stikstof in een zelfgemaakt aluminium bak kon de processor naar -37 C gekoeld waarna hij stabiel op meer dan 2GHz kon lopen. Een indrukwekkend resultaat:

I filled the box and went back to BIOS to check temps: +4°C and dropping. In a few seconds, it was -37°C and I decided to boot into W2K. When I got to W2K and started, the MBM temp sensor displayed 0°C and the reading didn't change at all. The Temp monitoring chip was probably a bit confused because of the LN2 temp [ED: MBM has to be enabled for below zero readings.]

Then I ran some tests and increased the FSB from 133 MHz (1.6 GHz) all the way up to 168 MHz (2016 MHz), the max of my Apacer RAM. The multiplier was set to 12.

At 2016 MHz, I could run tests like pifast or pipih3 without errors (these tests are more "error sensitive" than, eg., 3DMark2000/1, so the CPU was pretty stable). I could run these tests without errors also at 2030 MHz, but the system jammed there; probably my Fortron 350W power supply just couldn't handle the CPU.

Terwijl VIA wederom erg sterke omzetcijfers heeft gepresenteerd, schrijft Dean Kent op de frontpage van Real World Technologies dat de vooruitzichten voor de mobo-industrie er weinig positief uitzien. Aanvankelijk waren er indicaties dat de markt zich in het tweede kwartaal zou herstellen, maar door de trage DDR rollout bestaat er bezorgdheid dat er geen verbetering is te verwachten voor het derde kwartaal of later:

On the motherboard front, things seem to be looking bad after some indications that the market might pick up in Q2. Recently, I heard a report that only one of the top four motherboard makers is actually seeing any pickup in demand, which might be attributed to a gain in market share or due to an OEM design win. Demand for most manufacturers appears to be low, and Q2 is typically worse than Q1 anyway, though there has been hope that a strong DDR marketing campaign could counter that. With the slow rollout of DDR so far, there is a lot of concern that any real relief may not come until Q3 or later.

Op de geheugen markt wordt Samsung geconfronteerd met een stagnerende vraag naar Rambus geheugen. De verwachting is dat de vraag in april gelijk zal zijn aan maart. Dit is nieuw bewijs dat de Pentium 4 minder goed verkoopt dan Intel had gehoopt. De vraag naar DDR geheugen is wel tamelijk gezond. Volgens geruchten kan Hyundai slechts 50% van de orders vervullen.

TweakTown meldt dat VIA op de hoogte is van de enigzins tegenvallende KT266 benchmarks en dat het verbeteren van de drivers en BIOS'en voor nieuwe chipset op dit moment de hoogste prioriteit heeft gekregen bij het bedrijf. Dat er op deze manier extra performance uit de moederborden gesleept kan worden blijkt uit de review van OCWorkbench. Door het GigaByte 7VTX moederbord van een nieuw BIOS te voorzien werden vandaag significant betere resultaten behaald dan vorige maand. Deze positieve trend hebben we ook gezien bij diverse (p)reviews van MSI's K7T266 Pro moederbord. Het gebruikte testsysteem won in dit geval zo'n 4% aan overall performance en dat was vooral te danken aan de extra snelheid van het geheugen. Als we VIA mogen geloven zal dat in de toekomst nog verder verbeterd worden:

The board design is quite similar to the 7DXR but without the RAID. GA-7VTX is a simple board which has pretty good overclocking features. It's FSB support of up to 200Mhz and jumper of 170Mhz hints that the KT266 chipset is as good as the KT133A in terms of overclocking.

Although it has all the tweaking like VI/O, VAGP, Multiplier and FSB, it lacks one important one which is CPU Vcore setting. Let's hope that in future revisions of this board, we will have that option. Most of the newer batch of CPU should be easily overclockable even at default voltage, so it might not be that important after all.

Not to forget the mentioning of good sound quality CT5880 chipset by Creative and the Dual BIOS. This board also support online BIOS updates. These are good features which is commendable.

Update: We updated it with the latest BIOS revision and the performance gains are substantial and now makes it one of the top notch performers against the other boards using other chipsets.

VIA heeft bekend gemaakt dat het bedrijf in maart een omzetstijging van maar liefst 24% heeft gerealiseerd ten opzichte van de maand februari. Dankzij een een sterke vraag naar PC133 chipsets en een toegenomen vraag naar VIA Apollo Pro266 en KT266 DDR chipsets voor het Socket 370 en Socket A platform, steeg de omzet in maart naar 122 miljoen dollar. Een maand geleden presenteerde VIA ook al goede cijfers:

VIA Technologies, Inc, the world’s leading semiconductor fabless design house, today announced a new record high sales for March 2001 with a net sales of NT$4.027 billion (US$124 million approximately).

These results represent an increase of 56.60% in comparison with March 2000. Meanwhile, on a sequential basis, sales revenues from January to March 2001 were just above NT$10.366 billion – an increase of 84.14% compared to 2000.

Despite overall market conditions VIA’s sales volumes in March were above expectations. In particular demand in the PC133 platform, for the Pro133 line and the KT133 line was exceptionally high. Also DDR products received higher than expected demand both on the Socket 370 platform with the Pro266 and on the AMD Socket A platform with the KT266. This record breaking March shows VIA is maintaining its momentum as one of the fastest growing companies in the industry.

The Register schrijft dat China van anti-virussoftwaremakers source codes van virussen heeft gevraagd in ruil voor toegang tot de Chinese markt. De officiële Chinese verklaring doet geloven dat men het doet om de consument te beschermen. Volgens andere bronnen doet China het om zich verder te ontwikkelen op het gebied van cyber-warfare, omdat het geen head-to-head weerstand kan bieden tegen de VS, de EU en Rusland.

China zou bestaande virussen willen bestuderen in de hoop een niet te detecteren maar wel zeer destructief virus te verkrijgen. De fabrikanten, die azen op de 1200 miljoen potentiële klanten in China, hebben dan wel toegestemd, maar hebben alleen de meest bekende en makkelijk te detecteren virussen opgestuurd:

Beijing clearly sees information warfare as an inexpensive battlefield equalizer. But according to the Journal report, only the most common malicious programs in circulation -- all of which are easily detected -- have been surrendered.

[...] Nevertheless it's beyond question that the Chinese authorities intend to secure for themselves the capability of launching devastating cyber attacks. With that in mind, we might make sense of this trend if we consider that they might wish to see a broad sample of detectable viruses in hopes of modifying them to evade detection without diluting their effectiveness.

We can also be confident that they're gleefully breaking every copyright law known to man, reversing the anti-virus software in search of other weaknesses they can exploit along those lines.

Op GamePC is een review verschenen van de Viewsonic VG175 17" LCD Display. Deze platte monitor maakt gebruik van de Active Matrix TFT technologie en heeft een native resolution van 1280 x 1024. Het apparaat heeft een Video Input Bandwidth van 135MHz en weegt ongeveer 8,5 kilogram. Voor een prijs onder de 2000 dollar is het zeker geen slechte monitor, maar er zijn nog wel een aantal minpunten (zoals het ontbreken van een DVI aansluiting):

The Viewsonic VG175 is an extremely nice desktop monitor. For basic work in Windows and 2D artwork and such, this particular LCD monitor is great. Here at GamePC though, we're a bit more demanding when it comes to our monitors, and for our type of gaming, this monitor just doesn't cut it. Does this mean it's a bad monitor? Absolutely not! We're just saying that serious gamers should stick with CRT monitors for the time being. After all, for the price of a 17" LCD, you can pick up a 22" Flat-CRT monitor which will definitely provide more enjoyment for fast-paced action games.

Personally, I would love to have this screen as my everyday work screen, and I think most people who see this monitor in portrait mode would agree. Of course, the price still needs to come down quite a bit before it's even a considerable as a CRT replacement. Considering the SGI 1600SW is just a couple hundred dollars more and is wide screen with a digital connection, the Viewsonic VG175 doesn't seem to offer much bang for the buck.

Op ZDNet is te lezen dat er een nieuwe techniek is die programma's die zijn bedoeld om bedrijfsnetwerken te kraken, kan camoufleren. Deze techniek werd door hacker 'K2' aan het publiek getoond. De techniek is erop gericht de patroonherkenning-intelligentie die veel Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS'en) normaal gesproken gebruiken in de war te brengen.

De reactie van beveiligingsexperts was verdeeld. Sommigen vatten het op als het zoveelste scenarion in de strijd tussen aanvallers en verdedigers. Andere beveiligingsexperts maken zich daarentegen wel zorgen. Gedurende de tijd die ze nodig hebben om de IDS'en aan te passen kunnen online vandalen hun gang gaan. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel van ZDNet:

Als een er een gat in de beveiliging van een bedrijfsnetwerk is gevonden, vinden hackers meestal verschillende manieren om dat uit te buiten. Om de aanvallen te beheersen passen de makers van de IDS'en voortdurend hun software aan om nieuwe varianten op een bekend thema bij te houden. Volgens K2 is de balans nu verstoord. Met de nieuwe techniek kunnen hackers de structuur van hun code op zo'n manier wijzigen, dat ze de IDS'en voor de gek kunnen houden.

WebWereld meldt dat antitrustautoriteiten van de Europese Unie de aanklachten tegen Microsoft formeel willen maken. De Commissie is al sinds februari 2000 bezig met een onderzoek naar klachten die zijn ingediend naar aanleiding van de introductie van Windows 2000. Microsft zou zijn dominante positie in de markt voor pc-besturingssystemen misbruikt hebben om ook in de servermarkt een dominante positie te verwerven.

In de Verenigde Staten lijkt het klimaat om te slaan. De opslitsing van Microsoft, waartoe rechter Thomas Penfield Jackson hen veroordeelde, lijkst steeds onwaarschijnlijker. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel van WebWereld:

In 1999 begon de Commissie al een onderzoek naar soortgelijke klachten van Sun over de besturingssystemen Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 en de opvolgers daarvan. Volgens Sun heeft Microsoft het server-besturingssysteem Windows 2000 zo in elkaar gezet dat het alleen volledig compatibel is met andere computers waarop Windows is geïnstalleerd.

Op USB Workshop staat een kort bericht waarin gemeld wordt dat Orange is begonnen met het leveren van USB 2.0 kaarten. Door zo'n kaart in een PCI slot te steken wordt je computer voorzien van één interne en vier externe USB poorten. Deze zijn allemaal compatible met versie 1.1 en 2.0 van de standaard, waardoor 12MBit/s en 480MBit/s apparaten tegelijk gebruik kunnen worden. Op de homepage van het bedrijf vinden we ook plannen terug voor een binnenkort te releasen versie van de kaart met FireWire poorten. Andere USB 2.0 producten van het bedrijf zijn een hub en een PCMCIA adapter:

The OrangeUSB 2.0 Hi-Speed PCI Board is a dramatic performance increase over the standard USB 1.1. Whereas the USB 1.1 is only 12Mbits/s, the new USB 2.0 Hi-Speed specification used by the OrangeUSB 2.0 Hi-Speed PCI Board runs at up to 480Mbits/s. USB, standing for "Universal Serial Bus", allows you to attach multiple peripheral devices simultaneously with automatic device detection and installation.

The OrangeUSB PCI Board with its higher bandwidth will be ideal for high speed devices such as higher resolution video conferencing cameras, and the next generation scanners, printers, and fast storage devices. The production PCI board will be available for shipment in April 2001.

The OrangeUSB 2.0 Hi-Speed PCI Board is "backwards-compatible" which means it will also work with all the older legacy USB 1.1 peripherals.

Johan de Gelas van Ace's Hardware heeft een review gepost van het nieuwe MSI K7T266 Pro moederplankje. De K7T266 Pro is gebaseerd op de VIA KT266 chipset en beschikt over 5 PCI slots, 3 DIMM slots en een ACR slotje. De uitvoering die door Ace's werd getest was bovendien voorzien van een Promise 20265 IDE RAID controller.

Hoewel de eerste KT266 samples een tamelijk tegenvallende performance lieten zien, blijkt dit gelukkig niet het geval te zijn bij het K7T266 Pro productie bord van MSI. De KT266 is niet alleen goedkoper en eenvoudiger te implementeren dan de AMD 760 chipset, maar is in veel benchmarks bovendien sneller. De geheugen performance is circa 3% beter dan de 760, mede dankzij de ondersteuning van 4-way memory interleaving. In de real-life benchmarks wordt er regelmatig stuivertje gewisseld door de VIA KT266 en AMD 760, maar nergens zijn de verschillen groot en vaak is de KT266 aan de leiding.

Een struikelpunt vormt op dit moment nog de Windows 2000 support. De K7T266 Pro functioneerde zeer stabiel onder Windows 98, maar het lukte Ace's Hardware niet om de SPEC ViewPerf en Winstone benchmarks betrouwbaar onder Win2k aan de praat te krijgen. Dit probleem is mogelijk te wijten aan de nog niet volledig uit-ontwikkelde VIA chipset drivers:

Overall, the VIA KT266 is the fastest chipset currently available for the Athlon. It is a cheap, feature rich, and fast chipset, and is probably the most attractive solution for desktop users. Workstation users might want to consider an alternative as the latest drivers from VIA are not working very well with OpenGL applications under Windows 2000.

In fact, many workstation users will likely prefer to wait for the AMD760MP chipset unless VIA can sort out the driver problems soon. Nevertheless, this is a chipset with great potential, as it offers better AGP performance and higher memory bandwidth for a good price. As a DDR chipset, it is also more future-proof than its brother, the VIAKT133A.

Zoals in dit bericht al eerder werd gemeld heeft Microsoft's Internet Explorer een ernstig veiligheidsprobleem. Microsoft reageerde hierop met een patch, maar diezelfde patch blijkt nu problemen te geven.

Uit berichten op diverse websites, waaronder Wired en Slashdot blijkt dat de patch tijdens het installeren in sommige gevallen aangeeft dat een update niet noodzakelijk is, waarna veel gebruikers de update-procedure staken. Wie dat echter braaf doet heeft wèl een probleem: het beveiligingslek blijft bestaan! Enige remedie is IE alsnog te upgraden en de betreffende patch nogmaals te installeren. Hieronder het commentaar van MS zoals dat te lezen is op Wired:

Microsoft officials say the message is an error and urges everyone who received it during an attempted installation of the security patch to return to the company website, download either Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5, and then reinstall the patch.

"If the patch is installed on a system running a version of IE other than the ones it is designed for, an error message will be displayed saying that the patch is not needed," Microsoft officials posted on the site on Sunday. "This message is incorrect, and customers who see this message should upgrade to a supported version of IE and re-install the patches.

Microsoft said users can verify the patch has actually been installed on their machine by opening Internet Explorer, selecting "Help," then selecting "About Internet Explorer." If the patch has been properly installed, the code "Q290108" should be listed in the Update Versions field.

Only those running Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 2 do not need to install the patch. The security flaw can probably affect many older versions of Explorer, but Microsoft said that previous versions of Explorer are "no longer supported, have not been tested and may or may not be affected by this vulnerability."

DSL Webserver heeft een groot aantal netwerkkaarten met elkaar vergeleken. De elf kaarten, want zo veel zijn 't er om precies te zijn, vertegenwoordigen zo'n beetje alles wat er momenteel te koop is: 3Com en Intel, maar ook enkele goedkope Realtek-kaartjes passeren de revue.

Alle kaartjes werden op performance getest en zowel de maximaal haalbare transmissiesnelheid als de daarbij optredende processor-belasting zijn keurig in tabelvorm terug te vinden. Opvallend is dat bij alle snelle kaarten de CPU-belasting 100% is als ze echt aan de bak moeten. Alleen de Intel Pro/100 en de Trendnet Realtek 8139 hadden een significant lagere processor-belasting, maar daar stond dan ook, zeker in 't geval van de Realtek, een véél lagere transmissiesnelheid tegenover.

Het geval Realtek is overigens extra interessant: er zijn op z'n minst drie kaarten in de test die gebaseerd zijn op de RTL8139 chip, de resultaten die behaald werden zijn echter héél verschillend, daar waar de SMC EZCard met de besten mee kan hobbelt de TrendNet er achteraan met nog geen 40% van de performance van de SMC. Dat maakt 't natuurlijk niet makkelijk om een op de Realtek gebaseerde kaart te kopen, zeker omdat er talloze versies in omloop zijn.

De meeste kaarten behaalden behoorlijk hoge transmissiesnelheden: negen van de elf kaarten zaten tussen de 73,4 (de snelste: Netgear FA312TX) en 65,9MBit/s netto, dus zònder data-overhead. Daarnaast bleken alle kaarten zonder problemen te werken, en dat is natuurlijk ook altijd prettig om te weten. De reviewers komen dan ook op het eind van hun betoog met de volgende conclusie:

Network cards have come along way since their introduction many years ago. All the network cards in this roundup were plug-and-play and extremely easy to install. The computer detected all the cards and all you had to do was pop in the right drivers and you were off and running. It is so great to have jumperless cards where you don't have to mess around with IRQ's and other inane settings. This is good news for all computer users as this makes networking much more user friendly.

One thing we cannot test in this roundup is reliability. All I can say is that all the cards worked pretty much as promised and none of them died on me. Actually, I've never had any computer component die on me. Regarding computer peripherals that don't have any moving parts, once a product works, it usually keeps on working for a long time. However, if you must based your purchase on reputation of reliability, then 3com and Intel are your main choices, but keep in mind that Netgear and Linksys have also built their reputation on making very good products.

Bij cdrlabs.com is vandaag een review verschenen over de QPS Que! Fire CD-RW drive. Dit is een externe drive uitgerust met een FireWire interface. De drive is gebouwd rond dezelfde hardware als de bekende 16/10/40 brander van Plextor. Het moge dan ook een niet al te grote verrassing zijn dat hij qua performance bijna identiek is. Alleen qua CPU gebruik en DAE moet de drive zijn meerdere erkennen in de IDE brander. Volgens de reviewer is de QPS Que! Fire een goede keus als je op zoek bent naar een snelle externe FireWire fikker:

If you've read our past FireWire reviews you've seen that other than CPU usage the performance was almost identical between the FireWire and ATAPI versions of a drive. This was not the case with the QPS drive. While the FireWire to IDE bridge did not affect the data transfers it did have a high overhead when extracting audio. While in this case you might be losing a little speed when extracting audio you are gaining FireWire's easy installation and the ability to move the drive from computer to computer as long as they they have FireWire ports.

Is the QPS drive an option if you're in the market for a FireWire drive? While there are a few others on the market now, this is the only one I know of that uses the Plextor PX-W1610TA. If you want a FireWire drive based on the best 16x drive technology available the QPS is it.

The drive is very new so you may have a hard time finding it but it should be hitting major retailers shortly after you read this. The places I have seen it for sale have it for anywhere between $375 and $400. This puts it at the same price as most other FireWire CD-RWs. Other than the DAE hiccups and the fact that it does not have a lot of software support yet, it's a great drive. I think that once it gains the software support it needs it will be a good choice for Mac and PC users a like.

Uit een onderzoek van Forrester Research is gebleken dat de online verkopen in de VS in de maand februari een herstel hebben laten zien ten opzichte van de voorgaande maand. Terwijl in december nog voor 6,2 miljard dollar aan online verkopen werden gedaan, was dit in januari slechts 3 miljard. In februari steeg dit naar 3,4 miljard dollar, terwijl februari vorig jaar juist een aanmerkelijk slechtere maand was dan januari en bovendien drie dagen korter is. Voor de Amerikaanse e-commerce industrie is dit positieve nieuws reden om opgelucht adem te halen.

Tot de meeste opvallende e-commerce markten behoorden de verkoop van vliegtickets, hotel reserveringen, autohuur en gezondheid- of schoonheidsproducten. Muziek deed het ook goed, ondanks de klaagzangen van de muziekindustrie over Napster en vergelijkbare filesharing netwerken:

De dagelijkse praktijk van e-commerce sluit steeds minder goed aan bij het traditionele beeld. Daarin zouden boeken- en cd-verkopers als Amazon en BOL de grootste omzetten halen. Verreweg het grootste deel van de huidige online omzet komt uit de verkoop van vliegtickets. De omzet daarvan nam in februari met 21 procent toe tot 502 miljoen dollar. Hotelreserveringen staat op een goede tweede plaats met een omzet van 306 miljoen, een groei van 23 procent. Van de tweede naar de derde plaats gezakt is computerhardware; de online verkopen daarvan krompen met 16 procent tot 305 miljoen dollar.

XBit Labs heeft wat info weten te vergaren over het prijsbeleid van Intel met betrekking tot de nieuwe Pentium III en Pentium 4 processors die in de komende maanden op de markt gebracht worden. In de tweede helft van deze maand wordt de 1,7GHz P4 gereleased op een introductieprijs van 701 dollar. Aanvankelijk werd een prijs van $776 verwacht. In juni/juli volgt de release van de nieuwe Tualatin PIII core en tegelijkertijd zal de P4 verder in prijs dalen. Tualatin zal verkrijgbaar zijn in snelheden van 1,13 en 1,26GHz. Het gehele prijsplaatje ziet er volgens onze Russische vrienden als volgt uit:

Met deze nieuw prijzen zal de 1,3GHz P4 net zo duur zijn als de PIII-866 op dit moment. Een heikel punt blijft echter de hoge kosten van een i850 plankje en bijbehorend Rambus geheugen. Hier komt pas verandering in als de i845 Brookdale en VIA Apollo PX266 chipsets in het derde kwartaal op de markt komen.

Dean Kent van Real World Technologies laat weten dat Crucial Technology, de online memory retailer van Micron, is begonnen met de verkoop van PC2100 DDR modules. De prijs van een 128MB DIMM is 60,29 dollar en een 256MB module kost $103,49. Omgerekend naar de huidige dollerkoers en rekening houdend met de BTW komt dit neer op FL 179,36 voor een reepje van 128Meg en FL 307,88 voor een reep van 256MB. De laagste prijs voor een 128 en 256MB PC2100 DDR module in de pricewatch is op dit moment respectievelijk 300 en 600 gulden. Dit geeft ruimte voor een flinke prijsdaling in de komende weken.

In een press release bij Yahoo heeft Intel bekend gemaakt dat het bedrijf de eerste 0.13 micron chips gebakken uit een 300 millimeter wafer terug heeft gekregen uit de speciale testfabriek D1C. Deze wafers moeten binnen nu en twee jaar overal gebruikt worden. Omdat het oppervlakte van dit nieuwe type meer dan twee keer zo groot is als dat van de standaard 200mm wafers kunnen er meer chips tegelijk gemaakt worden, zodat minder chemicaliën, water en stroom nodig zijn. De prijs van de processors zakt daardoor met ongeveer 30%. Bovendien kan men vier keer zoveel produceren in dezelfde fabriek. Deze technologie zal onder andere gebruikt worden om toekomstige versies van de Pentium 4 te maken:

D1C will produce chips on 300 mm wafers utilizing Intel's new 0.13 micron process technology. This technology allows the company to manufacture chips with circuitry that is so small it would take almost 1000 of these ``wires'' placed side-by-side to equal the width of a human hair. This advanced process technology will enable high performance microprocessors that can contain more than 100 million transistors and run at multi-GHz clock speeds.

Intel's 0.13 micron process technology features the world's fastest transistor used in volume production. Intel transistors are the foundation of the industry's fastest microprocessors.

Intel uses the smallest transistor gate in production and the thinnest of thin films to make these ultra speedy transistors. Intel's transistor gate measures just 70 nanometers (0.07 microns in length). Intel's advanced 0.13 micron process technology also features a 1.5 nanometer gate oxide that is the thinnest in the industry for a manufacturing technology and provides industry-leading transistor performance at lower operating voltage.
