ZDNet heeft een interessant artikeltje online gezet over Microsoft's Tablet PC. De Tablet PC is nu alleen nog maar een concept, maar moet volgens Microsoft ooit de huidige PC gaan opvolgen. Het apparaat heeft een uiterlijk en bediening als veel andere WebPads die onlangs de revue passeerden, maar heeft alle functies van een notebook in zich. Bovendien kan de Tablet PC behalve met een pen ook met de stem bestuurd worden. Op dit moment draait het prototype op Windows 2000 en de Transmeta Crusoe processor, maar dat zal naar alle waarschijnlijkheid nog wel veranderen voordat het apparaat in 2003 (!) op de markt komt.
Zondag, in zijn Comdex-speech, zal William H. meer uitleg geven over zijn geesteskindje. Tot die tijd moeten we het met deze specificaties doen:
The Tablet PC concept calls for a 2.2-pound portable screen-based device, likely to be about the size of a legal-size notepad. The device will be designed with the full capabilities of a notebook PC. However, it will combine the computing power and functionality of the notebook PC with a host of new features. They range from the latest in screen and battery technologies to new user interfaces.[break]Hoewel het prototype nu draait op een Transmeta processor, is het nog lang niet zeker dat Microsoft ook uiteindelijk met dit merk in zee gaat om de Tablet PC te produceren. Er is goede kans dat MS voor die tijd overstapt op AMD of Intel:[/break]Sources confirm that Transmeta is working with Microsoft on projects, although officials of the chip maker could not comment on questions about a relationship, due to its coming initial public offering.
However, it is likely that by the time the Tablet PC becomes a product Microsoft may switch to Intel Corp. or Advanced Micro Devices Inc. processors, said sources close to the company.
