GamePC heeft na eerdere reviews van de AMD Opteron 244, Intel Xeon 3,06GHz 1MB L3 en de AMD Athlon MP 2800+ nu ook de nieuwste telg uit de Opteron 24x-serie aan de tand gevoeld. Twee exemplaren van de Opteron 246 werden met behulp van een Tyan Thunder K8S-moederbord getest in SiSoft Sandra, 3D Studio Max 5.0, Maya 4.02, Photoshop 7.0, Windows Media Encoder 9 en ScienceMark. Een deel van deze benchmarks werd eveneens uitgevoerd op een Asus SK8N-moederobord. De single processor configuraties werden verder getest in Vorbis Tools en de games Unreal Tournament 2003, No One Lives Forever 2, Warcraft III en Freelancer.
SiSoft Sandra niet meegerekend, weet de dual Opteron 246 vier van de zes tests te winnen van de dual Xeon 3,06GHz met 1MB L3 cache. Van de vier tests waarin de Opteron aan kop ging, werden er drie met een grote marge van meer dan 10 procent gewonnen. De twee benchmarks waarin de Opteron het moest afleggen tegen de Xeon, werden verloren met een redelijk kleine marge van respectievelijk 9,5 procent en 3,5 procent. Ook in de single processor benchmarks leverde de Opteron 246 uitstekende prestaties. In de Ogg Vorbis encoding test en Windows Media Encoder bleven de prestaties nog 4,8 tot 13,9 procent achter bij de Pentium 4 3,2GHz, maar alle andere tests werden (met uitzondering van SiSoft Sandra) door de Opteron gewonnen of eindigden in remise. De relatieve prestaties van de dual Xeon 3,06GHz 1MB en de dual AMD Athlon MP 2800+ ten opzichte van de dual Opteron 246 zijn in de onderstaande tabel weergegeven. Een negatief percentage betekent dat de Opteron 246 in de betreffende test sneller was:

GamePC concludeert dat AMD met de komst van de Opteron 246 opnieuw de wisselbeker van snelst presterende pc-processor in handen heeft gekregen. Vooralsnog heeft de processor één groot nadeel en dat is zijn prijs van rond de 900 dollar. Daarmee is de Opteron 246 zelfs duurder dan de snelste Xeon, die voor een prijs van 850 dollar over de toonbank gaat. De komst van de Opteron 146 en later de Athlon 64 FX zullen de indrukwekkende prestaties van de SledgeHammer-core binnen het bereik van een groter publiek brengen:
After seeing the Opteron 246 in action, we have more faith in the Hammer architecture than ever. With the lifespan of this chip just starting, and Intel's current Northwood designs all but drained from further speed boosts, it looks like AMD has free reign of the high-end market until Intel's Prescott architecture comes along. No doubt Intel will push clock speeds to a maximum with their new chip, but this time it may not matter as much. AMD has such features like their on-die memory controller and X86-64 processing abilities, both of which Intel won't be matching anytime soon. Looks like we underestimated Hammer in a big way. AMD is back in the game.

What will happen now? As I have told you above, in 2004 the Sunnyvale-based microprocessor firm will have two or even more kinds of Athlon processors. I have no idea, how people, who are not familiar with technology and PCs, will be able to distinguish between them and choose the one that suits best for their needs. Well, but do people really distinguish between all those GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5800 and 5900? What the consumers do know is that the 5200 is slower than the 5900, even though the feature-set provided by the former is not the same as provided by the latter.
