With BB Phone, three-minute calls within Japan and to the United States cost 6 cents. The rates for calls to other countries vary but are all generally cheaper than old-style phone calls. Calls to another BB Phone are free. A long-distance romance has Ayumu Mizuno, a 24-year-old engineer, sold on BB Phone. He expects to save hundreds of dollars in calls to his out-of-town girlfriend, who lives with her parents. The service is in such demand that customers have complained about long waits for service and support. Another catch is that free calls happen rarely because BB Phones remain rare.
But while Sun's cheap workstations have proven popular, they haven't held back the tide. The Unix workstation market is now dwarfed by the Intel-Windows-Linux market, a conversion driven by lower prices and greater availability of software. Nearly four times as many Intel workstations were shipped worldwide in the first quarter, according to a report from IDC, and the gap continues to grow.
With the 17-inch models hitting stores this month, the 15-inch production based in Taiwan has shrunk to a mere 20,000, Taiwan suppliers added. Taiwanese iMac contractors include Quanta Computer, which assembles the machines; Hon Hai Precision Industry, otherwise known as Foxconn Electronics by trade name, which supplies steel pivoting arms attached to the panels; and Catcher Technology, which makes the hemispherical bases for the iMac.

"We are blending LSI Logic's interface and system-level integration leadership with Infineon's high-data-rate read channel expertise, and combining our companies' engineering resource efforts to achieve SOC integration. This, along with our advanced high-volume manufacturing capabilities, will give our customers an edge in today's highly competitive time-to-market business," said Peter Schiefer, general manager and vice president for network and computer storage, at Infineon Technologies, in a statement.
"The LSI Logic-Infineon R&D cost-sharing agreement is expected to expand the market opportunities for both companies in the hard-disk drive space, while bringing time-to-market advantages to customers," said Dave Reinsel, research manager for storage, hard disk drives and components at IDC in the same statement issued by Infineon.
Researchers say people will be able to write up to 25 words per minute with Dasher compared to on-screen keyboards, which they say average about 15 words per minute. With a bit of practice, MacKay said, Dasher offers an easier and more satisfying way for disabled people to communicate, providing them with better tools to write e-mail or create word processor files.
The good news is that the Windows XP and Mac OS X versions of version 8.0 of the excellent PGP Desktop, which were ready when Network Associates canned the division, will now ship in the fourth quarter, according to a company statement. The existing Windows and Mac OS products will be available through the online company store, which appears to be having teething difficulties right now.
"There were some things that were difficult to do with the old engine, particularly with changing elements in pages," said Opera Software co-founder and CEO Jon S. von Tetzchner. "We felt we needed a rewritten engine to have something that works with all the DOM that is coming out."

Turbolinux Inc., which provides Linux operating environments and multi-platform server provisioning and management products, has sold its Linux software business to Japanese software group Software Research Associates Inc. for an undisclosed amount.
