The FD91's resolution topped out at 1024 x 768 and wasn't very good in low-light situations. The FD95 has raised the resolution to 1600 x 1200 and seems to be considerably more sensitive in less than favorable lighting. Those that liked the rotating color LCD on the FD91 will be disappointed by the FD95's fixed-mount LCD but the new design just wouldn't permit it. It still has the 2.5-inch color LCD as well as the high-resolution eyelevel color viewfinder. Both displays allow the user to access the camera's menus and change all the settings and of course, using the smaller viewfinder saves your battery power. New on the FD95 and the CD1000 is an autostart feature on the eyelevel viewfinder. There is no control button to turn it on or off, you just put the camera up to your eye and it "senses" this and turns the display on and off automatically.

Daarnaast hebben Sony camera's een leuke onderscheidende funtie: ze kunnen een kort MPEG filpje opnemen van 15 seconden. Een leuke feature.

BikkelZ schrijft: "Xlr8yourmac heeft een eerlijke benchmarkvergelijking (dat wil zeggen niet alleen Altivec optimized filters) tussen de stock G4 500 en de HP Pavilion PIII-1000 met Rambus geheugen gepost. De G4 is natuurlijk met halve kloksnelheid niet de snelste, maar weet toch een heel goed figuur te slaan tegenover de Pentium III".

De test werd uitgevoerd met 21 Photoshop filters en een afbeelding van 10MB. De 1GHz PIII had in totaal 85,8 seconde nodig om de benchmarks te voltooien, terwijl de G4-500 daar 15,4 seconde langer over deed. Blijkbaar werken de AltiVec optimalisaties erg effectief in Photoshop:

Personally, I was impressed at the performance of the G4/500 compared to a 500MHz faster PC running a 33% faster memory bus and Rambus RAM. (Yes, I've read the web reports that PC133 RAM is as fast or perhaps faster in some tests with less latency than Rambus RAM, which is only 16bits wide, but at higher clock speeds.)

And remember that Photoshop 5.5 supports the PIII's SSE extensions (128Bit), which shows that Altivec performance (in this app at least) is impressive. Imagine if the G4 had been running at the same clock speed of the Pentium III. Hopefully Motorola or IBM will be able to produce faster G4s in quantities soon.

De halfgeleider divisie van Philips heeft vandaag op een analisten meeting aangekondigd dat het dit jaar een investering doet van 2 miljard, met name in de uitbreiding van produktiecapaciteit. Hiervoor wordt in samenwerking met TSMC in Singapore een nieuwe fabriek uit de grond gestampt. De constructie hiervan ligt voor op schema, er zou zelfs sprake zijn van een recordtijd voor het bouwen van een dergelijke fabriek.

Verder werd bekend gemaakt dat in de VS een fabriek van IBM wordt overgekocht en dat in China een tweede fabriek voor de produktie van LCD-panels wordt gebouwd. Philips Semiconductors streeft naar een omzet van 10 miljard Euro in 2002:

Philips Semiconductors' sales are at an all time high. Despite capacity additions in existing facilities and a number of investments, such as MiCRUS, in East Fishkill, New York, USA which was announced today, Philips Semiconductors will be capacity constrained throughout the year 2000, in line with the entire industry. Regarding the acquisition of VLSI, Mr. Van der Poel said, ``VLSI has been a very good investment for us and our timing for the acquisition could not have been better. Not only does it offer ASIC development tools and methodologies, but high growth opportunities in communications and networking as well.''

Eerder had Compaq besloten dat de ontwikkeling van Windows 2000 voor de Alpha-processor moest worden stopgezet. Nu brengt WinInformant ons het blijde nieuws dat Compaq is teruggekomen op haar beslissing en dat Windows 2000 er toch ook voor de Compaq Alpha processor komt. Hieronder het nieuwsberichtje:

"It's a done deal," I was told Wednesday morning. "Capellas wants Windows 2000 on Alpha and he regrets that Compaq ever cancelled those plans." I'll have more on this exciting development Thursday. Intel heeft bekend gemaakt dat de totale onkosten voor de i820 MTH bug en het terugroepen van MTH moederborden op 253 miljoen dollar worden berekend. De terugactie houdt in dat alle borden met een MTH worden vervangen door een i820+Rambus plank. Tevens worden SDRAM reepjes omgewisseld voor RIMRAM en ontvangen de mobofabrikanten een nederige vergoeding van 10 dollar per omgewisselde moederplaat:

Insgesamt würden sich die Ausgaben, die durch den MTH-Fehler entstanden seien, damit auf auf 253 Millionen US-Dollar belaufen, erklärte eine Intel-Sprecherin.

Ob damit Intel schon den gesamten finanziellen Aufwand verbucht hat, der durch den missglückten Chip entstand, muss bezweifelt werden. Immerhin bietet Intel den Board-Herstellern nicht nur an, die problematischen Platinen gegen Rambus-Mainboards mit 128 MByte (teurem) RIMM-Speicher auszutauschen, sondern bezahlt ihnen auch noch pro Board 10 US-Dollar Aufwandsentschädigung. Den alten SDRAM-Speicher dürfen die Hersteller behalten... Allerdings sind einige Hersteller damit gar nicht zufrieden – die 10 US-Dollar halten sie für viel zu niedrig angesetzt; außerdem müssen sie die gesamten Entwicklungskosten für die Entwicklung der i820-Boards mit MTH abschreiben, ebenso wie die in die Werbung investierten Gelder.

Bij Imaging Resource heeft men een review geschreven van de Canon PowerShot S100 digitale camera, die hier in Europa gewoon de Digital Ixus heet. De Canon Digital Ixus is vooral apart omdat hij erg klein is: 87.0 x 57.0 x 26.9 mm. Dat maakt hem de kleinste digitale fotocamera die nu op de markt is. Op het gebied van resolutie hoeft hij ook niet onder te doen voor veel andere (grotere) camera's; de Ixus heeft een 1600x1200dpi (2.1 MPixel) CCD aan boord. Hoewel de beeldkwaliteit iets minder is dan zijn grotere broer, de Canon PowerShot S10, is het voor zo'n opmerkelijk kleine camera toch erg goed:

Bij Tresh's FiringSquad is een uitgebreide preview te vinden van de STMicro Kyro, de videochipset die voorheen bekend was onder de naam PowerVR3. Door de nieuwe tiled based rendering techniek van STM hopen zij een snelle kaart te maken. Zoals de meesten onderhand al weten, worden door deze techniek alleen de zichtbare delen van een 3D-beeld berekend. Ondanks zijn laag geklokte snelheid (125 MHz) kan de kaart toch aardig meekomen met de GeForce2 GTS en de Voodoo5.

One has to wonder why other graphics companies haven't used tile based rendering. Look at the numbers here. This card is clocked at 125 MHz and only has a two pixel pipeline. The vanilla TNT2 has the same number of pixel pipelines and has a higher clock speed. If the KYRO were using conventional rendering methods it wouldn't stand a chance. Imagine having a TNT2 going up against the GeForce 2 and Voodoo 5… like a child playing in traffic.
The MSRP for the 32MB card will be under $200, and there will also be a slightly more expensive 64 MB version. MSRP is generally higher than normal retail price. We guess that you'll be able to find the KYRO for around $150. The card looks like a promising value buy considering it has all the new features like FSAA and environmental bump mapping.

This is by no means a complete deal yet. There is room for improvement in the driver set. Performance wise, we will have comparison numbers against the DDR and SDR up soon to give a better example of where this card stands. FSAA numbers on 3Dmark 2000 will also be provided.

Een nieuwe dag, een nieuwe GeForce2 GTS review. Hilbert Hagedoorn van Guru3D mailde mij dat hij een review op zijn site heeft gekicked van de Creative 3D Blaster Annihilator 2. Deze kaart was lekker snel en kon goed meehobbelen met andere GeForce2 GTS kaarten. Logisch, want de kaart is gebaseerd op het reference design van nVidia, en de kaarten die ze ermee vergeleken ook. Ook over de handleiding was men heel tevreden:

S3 heeft aangekondigd dat zijn in hun derde generatie Rio MP3 players ondersteuning zullen bieden voor Dolby Advanced Audio Coding. AAC werd ontwikkeld voor DVD en biedt een hogere geluidskwaliteit dan MP3, terwijl de filesize circa 30 procent kleiner is. AAC support zal voor het eerst verschijnen in de binnenkort te releasen Rio 600 player, meldt The Register:

AAC is to be wrapped into the MPEG digital media standard due to its superiority over MP3 - aka MPEG 1, Level 3. AAC provides up to 48 channels of audio, sample rates of up to 96kHz, and provides broadcast quality audio 320Kbps for a 5.1-channel audio.

S3 actually licensed AAC back in April, through its RioPort digital music portal division, which suggests the company's finally getting ready to ship the new Rios. In a statement, S3 said it would work with Dolby to optimise AAC for the Rio, something we would imagine has been going on since the April announcement.

Op geen enkele andere manier krijg je zo veel processor-kracht voor zo weinig geld. Als AMD de levering van de Durons op peil kan houden, kan dit nog wel eens de definitieve doorbraak van AMD gaan betekenen. Itsme! schrijft dat er bij Anandtech weer een leuke review te vinden is. Eerst gaan ze eens uitgebreid in op de impact van meer fillrate of meer bandbreedte en daarna hebben ze nog een stuk of 10 pagina's vol weten te schrijven over het nut (of het ontbreken ervan) van een 64 MB GeForce II kaart. De bekende conclusie luid: 64 MB is nu eigenlijk nog niet echt interessant, maar voor de mensen die niet elke 6 maanden een nieuwe kaart kopen kan de extra 32 MB en 100 dollar een goede investering voor de toekomst zijn:

As the performance numbers show, the extra 32 MB of memory (as well as $70-$100) results in a very nominal performance increase of about 8% only at very high colors and resolutions when in Quake III Arena. The Unreal Tournament numbers show that the additional 32 MB of memory really does not do anything until 1280x1024x32, where performance increased up to 52%. $70-$100 seems a high price increase to pay for a large performance gain in one specific color depth and resolution and minor performance gains in all others.

In order to determine if the 64 MB GeForce 2 GTS is right for you, one needs to consider how often you wish to walk down the upgrade path. Many users may find it more economically sound to purchase a 32 MB GeForce 2 GTS card now and upgrade around the time of the NV20, slated to be released about a year from now. For those not interested in having top of the line performance no matter the cost, this path seems to make the most sense, as it seems that the 32 MB GeForce 2 GTS, with its S3TC texture compression, will be fine for games in the not so distant future.

A different path, however, should be taken by those who either want the best of the best now and are still willing to upgrade in a year and those who want to upgrade now and hold onto their investment for a longer period of time. For the user who wants the best of the best and is going to upgrade in about a year regardless, go with the 64 MB GeForce. While it dose not make that large of a difference now, future games will only increase the performance gain experienced with the additional 32 MB of memory. For the user who wishes to upgrade now to the best and hold on to their investment the longest, the 64 MB GeForce 2 GTS makes the most sense once prices fall within obtainable ranges. Once again, a user who wishes to retain his/her card for a long period of time will not regret the additional memory that the 64 MB card has to offer.

Bij HardwareCentral hebben ze een Intel i815E moederbord (een Intel test-exemplaar) uitgebreid getest met een Celeron 600 en een P3-933. Qua performance wist de i815E de BX chipset over het algemeen niet te verslaan maar eindigde er meestel nét ietsie onder. Vergeet echter niet dat de BX in zijn levensbaan al veel getweaked is dus het zou best kunnen dat de i815 na verloop van tijd het gat dicht loopt. Hier een hap uit de conclusie:

Performance-wise, we’re not elated, but we’re not upset either. i815(E) did outperform its real competitor, the VIA 133A, by a slight margin, while at the same time, it again falls behind the veteran BX chipset. Some may perhaps have been expecting i815 to trounce BX right out of the gate, and while this, somewhat to our dissappointment, isn't the case, we’re very confident that within a couple months we’ll see some i815 boards capable of outperforming BX boards. All in all, the performance is quite good, although the simple fact that BX still comes out on top may leave some feeling unimpressed. Given a bit of time for tweaking, we firmly believe that can change, and i815E can be an excellent product. [break]Helaas zullen i815E plankjes wel een zwaarder prijskaartje krijgen waardoor BX en Apollo Pro 133A plankjes de komende tijd nog steeds interessant zullen blijven:[/break]Do we recommend i815E boards? That depends on who you are. For anyone considering purchasing a VIA 133A board, i815 looks like a compelling option. i815 boards will almost certainly be faster than most VIA 133A boards, so the only real concern is the difference in price, which could be upwards of $20-$30 between i815 and VIA 133A boards. Whether or not the extra bit of performance is worth the few extra dollars in cost is up to the consumer. Anyone still clinging to, or considering purchasing a new BX board, our recommendation to you is to sit tight for a few weeks. Your best option is to sit back, and see what can be done with i815E in the skillful hands of the likes of Asus, Abit, Soyo, and others.

Nu.nl schrijft in dit nieuwsbericht dat Casema na een gesprek met de Consumentenbond overweegt haar gebruikers financiële compensatie aante bieden vanwege wanprestaties van de kabelboer:

The USB freaks van USB Workshop melden dat Sony de MZ-R70PC MiniDisc speler heeft aangekondigd die is uitgerust met (jawel) een USB connector. Het ding heeft een advies prijs van $250 dollar en zou eind deze zomer (die vandaag is begonnen) leverbaar moeten zijn.

Just when you're getting used to the idea that Windows ME really is the last of the Win9x line of operating systems, you get a hint that maybe it's not, after all. Once upon a time Win98 was officially the last of the Win9x line, but since then Microsoft has put out two more upgrades, Win98 SE last year and now Windows ME - the latter is almost certainly definitely the last, but if it is, what's Tiger?

The Register has received information that bugs logged from the ME development programme have been sent to a mysterious new project, codenamed Tiger. Although we can't as yet confirm the truth of this, the information is claimed to have come from Microsoft developers who worked on Windows ME.

If it is true, there clearly has to be continuing development of the Win9x codebase, which would mean that Windows ME isn't the last one after all. It might be that Microsoft is just working on a service pack, but as Windows ME is a service pack really, it seems a little early to be getting into that kind of stuff. And do you give service pack development a flashy codename?

The Addtronics 3890A and 3891A are well constructed and nicely thought-out little cases. They come with fine power supplies, and we really like the drive rail and removable motherboard implementations. The cooling options are good for a case this size, and the front panel's removable inlet filter is a nice touch. Unfortunately, you're just not going to get the extraordinary cooling options and roomy interior of the Addtronics full and server towers.

The horizontal panel that runs from the front to the back of the case, along with the power supply that sits on its side on top of it, can make upgrading certain components difficult, although it can be helpful with power cable management. They can be an impediment to easy CPU and RAM upgrades, and although removing the motherboard tray is easy enough, it will add time and some additional work to what should be a relatively fast and easy install. The use of extremely large CPU heatsink/fan combos, extending more than 3" from the base of your motherboard, could be impossible.

Access to PCI and ISA cards, however is excellent, and upgrading drives is extremely easy, thanks to Addtronics' drive rail and removable bay systems. If you don't require constant access to your CPU and RAM, and you don't intend to load the case up with a lot of drives, we think you'll be happy with this case. We think its relatively small size and solid construction make it an ideal candidate for LAN parties or a small, secondary system. If you need more room inside, or easy access to your CPU, you should probably look for something larger or a case with a different power supply positioning strategy.

Het is nog onduidelijk of het Hooggerechtshof de zaak daadwerkelijk gaat behandelen. Mocht dit hof de zaak wel accepteren dan kan het meer dan een jaar duren voordat er een definitieve uitspraak ligt. Weigert zij dan wordt de zaak teruggestuurd naar het Hof van Beroep.

Jackson heeft tevens het verzoek om uitstel voor opsplitsing en uitvoering van de gedragsregels toegewezen. Microsoft hoeft hier niet eerder mee aan de slag totdat er een uitspraak is van het Hof en kan dus geruime tijd doorgaan op de manier zoals het altijd al deed. Concurrenten vrezen dat Microsoft zo haar marktoverheersing kan vasthouden en ondertussen nieuwe internetmarkten aan kan boren. De rechtszaak moest hier juist een einde aan maken.

Microsoft heeft liever dat de zaak voorkomt bij de beroepsrechtbank, omdat deze al een keer eerder in het voordeel van Microsoft heeft besloten. Bovendien kan het op deze manier nog meer tijd winnen.

Venator stuurde ons richting de officiële press release van Abit over hun nieuwe SE6 plankje, gebaseerd op de Intel i815 chipset. Zoals we in de review van HardOCP hebben kunnen lezen is de plank geen snelheidsmonster maar de naam Abit moet er toch voor kunnen zorgen dat dit een van de beste i815 plankjes wordt:

Intel 815 with ICH2 (i815e)
The i815, a completely new core logic chipset, supports a Front Side Bus speed of 133MHz (plus 100 and 66MHz). The AGP port supports AGP 4X devices. As an alternative, the chipset offers integrated AGP 2X 3D graphics. The SE6 also supports ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Management Interface).

To these features, the i815e chipset (on which the SE6 is based) adds Intel’s new ICH2 (I/O Controller Hub 2). This second-generation I/O hub gives you Ultra ATA/100 support (backwards-compatible to Ultra ATA/66 and 33). It also gives an additional USB header for two extra USB channels. Combined with the two standard USB connectors, you get a grand total of four USB channels.

Expandability
The SE6 features six PCI slots and three 168-pin DIMM sockets. The latter provide expandability to up to 512MB of either 100MHz or 133MHz SDRAM. The AGP port can be fitted with either an AGP 4X card or AIMM (AGP In-line Memory Module) to bolster the integrated AGP 2X. The CNR (Communication Networking Riser) is one of the true standouts of the SE6, greatly broadening your computer’s networking capabilities and reducing the baseline costs of communication features. Not only does the CNR support six-channel sound; it also offers an integrated Media Access Controller (“MAC”), so that the only networking hardware you need to supply is the physical link.

Features
SoftMenu™ II eliminates the need for jumpers or DIP switches to set CPU parameters. Those who prefer DIP switches can use the set included on the SE6 instead. In addition to SoftMenu™ technology, the system BIOS features and supports Award Plug and Play BIOS, Write-Protect Anti-Virus function by AWARD BIOS, and is of course Year 2000 compliant.

The SE6’s multi I/O functions include two channels of Bus Master IDE Ports supporting up to four Ultra DMA/100 devices. It features hardware monitoring of fan speeds, voltages, system environment temperature and one thermal header for further temperature monitoring. A standard 15-pin VGA connector is included on the board, as is a separate “VL-Bus” connector, for use with either TV or Flat Panel Display output. The SE6 offers two-channel soft audio CODEC, with an integrated AC’97 digital audio controller and audio connectors (Line-in, Line-out, Mic-in, and Game Port) with audio drivers included. The SE6 also offers support to up to 6-channel CNR sound cards.

Wake on LAN and Wake on Modem are built in, as are Open Chassis and IrDA TX/RX headers and Keyboard and Mouse Power-On functionality.

Glorix Jim schrijft dat HardOCP een review online heeft gezet over een pre-production Abit SE6 sample. Deze plank, die is uitgerust met Intel's i815 chipset, heeft een fijne layout met 6 PCI en 3 DIMM sloten en is daarnaast ook nog 'rock stable'. Alleen de performance is niet zoals veel mensen een tijd geleden hadden gehoopt: de BX chipset is nog steeds het snelste:

So what is the i815E really supposed to deliver? I am guessing all the integrated features we discussed a few pages back. It is clear, that from a power user/gamers perspective there is not reason for us to even be considering this mainboard. The only real benefit I see it delivering over the BX is the ability to bring the AGP bus back to spec at higher FSB speeds. Yes, it also does have 4X AGP, but we can't seem to take advantage of it yet anyway.

The one glaringly good thing about the board? It seemed to have tremendous stability. It has run days and days as a Quake Server, with plenty of action, and has not crashed but once.

This is probably one of the most bland and boring reviews we have ever done. We try to stay with topics that generate a little more excitement. It seems as if Intel has created a fully integrated "all in one" board that is on par with VIA 133A performance, which is GREAT. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. It is certain that the i815E offers no real benefits to folks like you and I unless we are building a desktop for our little sister or for twelve employees. Otherwise, I think this is NOT for the normal retail crowd.[break]En hier nog even een inzichtvolle uitspraak van Kyle :[/break]Again we see the i815E get "embarrassed" by the BX and only come into basically a tie the VIA 133A. Are you thinking what I am thinking by now? Why did Intel even go to the trouble of developing a new chipset. Hell, they probably could have save money by giving away a free vid and sound card with every BX chipset they sell.

Alhoewel DPC gisteren 12 nieuwe leden mocht verwelkomen (waardoor we er nu in totaal 2318 hebben) is het niet gelukt om Team Anandtech van de eerste plaats te stoten, we bleven zelfs ver achter met ruim 290K blokjes minder.

De mailserver van Chello blijkt al sinds dinsdag 16:10 plat te liggen en sindsdien zijn onze Chello helden er nog niet in geslaagd om het ding weer overeind te krijgen. iXBT meldt dat Quantum een nieuwe serie lct20 harddisks met 20GB platter grootte heeft aangekondigd. De nieuwe drives draaien op 4500 toeren, hebben een gemiddelde toegangstijd van 12ms en zijn voorzien van een ATA100 interface (jippie). Al met al geen specs om opgewonden van te raken.

De drives zijn dan ook bedoeld voor de low-end markt, waar vooral een lage prijs en een lage geluidsproductie van belang zijn. Dat laatste zou in ieder geval goed moeten zitten, want als we Quantum mogen geloven zijn de lct's de stilste schijven ter wereld.

De lct20's komen beschikbaar in varianten met 10, 20, 30 en 40GB diskpace en worden vanaf augustus geleverd. Later dit jaar zouden ook 7200rpm versies gereleased worden (thanks Venator voor de link).

JC heeft een aantal benchmarks gepost van een Willy testkist, waarvan pics zijn te bezichtigen bij FullOn3D. De SiSoft Sandra screenshots geven aan dat 't een 800MHz Willamette met 400MHz quad pumped bus en 8x multiplier betreft. De erg snelle 400MHz bus en dual channel Rambus - beide met een maximale theoretische bandbreedte van 3,2GB/s - bereiken erg strakke resultaten in de SiSoft memory benchmarks:

Minder blij zijn de Cachemen benchmarks, afkomstig uit deze thread op het JC message board. De L1 en L2 cache performance is lager dan die van een 1GHz Thunderbird, hoewel ook hier de geheugenperformance bij het Willamette testsysteem duidelijk hoger is. De terugval na 8KB en 128KB suggereert dat Willy de beschikking heeft over slechts 16KB L1 (data+instructions) en 128KB L2 cache. Blijkbaar zijn delen van de cache gedisabled op deze sample:

JC noemt verder 3DMark 2000 resultaten (2000 voor Willy vs 6800 voor een PIII van onbekende snelheid), die echter niet serieus genomen kunnen worden omdat er nog geen Tehama drivers voor Windows beschikbaar zijn. MolDyn FPU benchmarks liggen op het niveau van een 550MHz PIII.

Intel opperhoofd Graig Barret voorspelt voor de komende 12 tot 18 maanden een aanhoudend wereldwijd tekort aan PC onderdelen. De oorzaak van de tekorten ligt volgens Intel in een onjuiste inschatting van de markt en een gebrek aan investeringen in de jaren 1996 en 1997. Verder is Barrett van mening dat de kosten voor internet toegang in Europa omlaag moeten, om e-commerce en het gebruik van internet te stimuleren:

The CEO of Intel, Craig Barrett, has predicted continuing worldwide PC shortages for the next 12 to 18 months.

"The cause of the shortages is due to under-investment in 1996 and 1997. Inaccurate forecasting added to the problem. The only cure is to make more capital investment," he said.

Barret claims the PC drought is the result of low supplies of all PC components and not just processors.

The Chipzilla chief has also repeated his call for Europe to drop the price of Internet access and urge businesses to re-vamp their plans to take better notice of e-commerce.

The Register schrijft dat de Bluetooth Special Interest Group en de Franse Defensie nog geen overeenstemming hebben kunnen bereiken over het gebruik van de 2,4GHz frequentie waarop Bluetooth apparaten met de buitenwereld babbelen. Een vergelijkbaar probleem deed zich eerder al voor bij de Apple AirPort, die eveneens communiceert op de 2,4GHz band:

A visit to Intel's wireless communication centre here in Stockholm today revealed that the designers have not quite got worldwide agreement on frequencies.

According to an Intel boffin at the site this morning, his company and the Bluetush SIG are currently conducting intense negotiations with the French government.

He said that the French military use the same wireless frequency as Bluetooth, and that he hoped the matter would be eventually resolved.

Na het doorstaan van DoS-aanvallen, is AOL door het openen van Email-attachments met Trojans erin door de Helpdesk (nu hadden ze zelf hulp nodig) prooi geworden van een hack.

Bij de aanval van afgelopen week werd er gebruik gemaakt van een virus verstopt in een mail-attachment. De mails werden week massaal naar de helpdesk van de provider gestuurd met een ingebakken Trojaans paard die, eens geopend, een verbinding tussen de hackers en het netwerk van America Online maakte. Hoewel AOL volhoudt dat de schade beperkt blijft, zouden een onbekend aantal rekeningen door de hackers gekraakt zijn. De eigenlijke database van AOL waarin de gegevens van 23 miljoen abonnees zijn opgeslagen, werd niet geraakt, zegt de firma. Enkel accounts van werknemers werden slachtoffer.

In dit geval hoeven geen klanten van het bedrijf te vrezen voor hun geld, maar AOL zelf (ik neem tenminste aan dat het om bankrekening gaat).

Via deze interessante thread op het message board van Ace's Hardware kwam ik bij dit .PDFje van AMD, waarin Duron versies met 64 en 128KB genoemd worden. Blijkbaar zijn er 128K Duron versies in voorbereiding, die mogelijk als antwoord kunnen dienen op snellere Celerons met bijv. 100MHz FSB. Het bestaan van een 128K Duron zou ook de reden kunnen zijn voor de vrij stellige speculaties dat de Duron / Spitfire met 128KB L2 cache gereleased zou worden:
