OEM marketing manager Leslie Mulligan said Quantum polled several hundred end users and found that applications like Internet browsing and word processing were driving many customers to purchase PCs priced between $500 and $1,200. The results didn't exactly back up the argument that such users require the same vast amounts of storage that purchasers of high-end disk drives allegedly need. Instead, the company reduced the level of noise generated by its drives as a way to appeal to customers. "Knowing these were attributes that [users] valued, that's what we used to design the drive," Mulligan said.
