Industry sources have now confirmed that Compaq will launch a new Alpha DS10, Compaq's budget server (review here) in the first days of August, which will be based on an Alpha EV67 (=21264A) 616 MHz. The Alpha EV67, or 21264A does not only reach higher clock speeds, but is also slightly better than the Alpha 21264, which can be found in the current DS10 systems. Together with the excellent Compaq C compiler for Linux (available here ), we estimate that the Alpha DS10 616 MHz should provide more CPU horspower than a similar Athlon/PIII 1000 Linux based system can offer. Of course, what Compaq means by "budget system" is another matter.
