Op Ars Technica is een technisch, maar zeer interessant verhaal te vinden over de werking van de KLAT2 (Kentucky Linux Athlon Testbed 2) supercomputer. Deze cluster is ontworpen door mensen van de University of Kentucky en bestaat uit 64 Athlon-gebaseerde systemen. KLAT2 gebruikt zeer efficiënte technieken om de prijs van deze supercluster laag te houden en de performance omhoog te halen. Dit laatste gebeurt o.a. door gebruik te maken van de 3DNow! technologie:

Most processor instruction sets recently have been extended with what we generically call SWAR (SIMD Within A Register) instructions that allow the programmer to specify quite a bit of parallelism. Using these SWAR instructions for scientific computing, not just the 3D games that motivated their development, is the other technological key to achieving supercomputer performance at record low cost. This performance boost isn't trivial to achieve, but the hardware to support it is already there, so it is free.

Now you're probably thinking that Athlons are pretty fast anyway, so why do I need to worry about SWAR/3DNow! stuff? While it is true that, per processor, the Athlons in KLAT2 are slightly faster in double-precision floating point performance than the Alphas in LANL's Avalon, using 3DNow! can provide a huge additional boost. On ScaLAPACK (the benchmark application used in the Top500 supercomputers list), KLAT2's 80/64-bit double-precision performance is around 22.8 GFLOPS, a very respectable number. Then again, using 3DNow!, KLAT2's single-precision ScaLAPACK performance zips to over 64 GFLOPS. That's nearly a 3X boost at no additional cost!

Er valt heel veel over dit artikel te zeggen, vooral het gedeelte over het oplossen van het 'netwerkprobleem' is zeer interessant, maar veel te lang om iets uit te quoten. Gewoon zelf lezen.

Bij UpsideToday lees ik het interessante nieuws dat Intel vandaag haar eerste 'Web Appliance' heeft laten zien: de Dot.Station. Dit apparaat bestaat uit één geheel waarin een monitor, computer en een telefoon is verwerkt, plus een los toetsenbord. De computer draait op Linux. De bedoeling is dat ISP's dit apparaatje tegen betaling gaan aanbieden, zoals dat nu ook al met de TV set-top boxes gebeurd. Gebruikers kunnen dan thuis op hun Dot.Station internetten zonder een complete (dure) computer aan te schaffen. Volgens Intel is het een heel goed idee, dat veel geld in het laatje kan brengen.

"This is the first in a family of products," Greg Welch, director of marketing for Intel's home products group, said in an interview. He said Intel expects to be shipping hundreds of thousands of the devices by year-end.

"It's not unreasonable to guess that this is a billion-dollar business opportunity. The question is will that come in two years, three years, four years," Welch said. "There's no doubt we see strong indications of a robust market." Intel does not expect to sell the machines directly to retail, he said.

"It's fundamentally a family communications product that unites Web-browsing, e-mail, some nice home organizational applications, even an integrated telephone," Welch said.

"It's targeted to those households that don't yet have a PC," but are nonetheless interested in getting online, he said. "Installation consists of plugging in the power, plugging in the phone line, plugging in the keyboard and turning it on."

While the devices are most likely to be provided as part of an overall service package, the cost would be comparable to low-priced PCs in the $500-$700 range, Welch said.

Zowel PC Scoop als UncaMilty (?) hebben een review geschreven van de Abit KA7, het overbekende Athlon moederbord met VIA KX133 chipset. De review van PC Scoop is niet heel erg positief over dit moederbord, vooral vanwege de slechte overclock-mogelijkheden van de Athlon (door middel van het verhogen van de FSB) en het niet kunnen upgraden naar Socket A processoren.

Overall, I was a little disappointed to not be able to run in the 800+ range, but the Athlons are just not great overclockers because of many design reasons, with the 200 MHz FSB being one of them. However, the ABIT SoftMenu III is super-excellent in allowing you to get the most out your particular setup. The 1 MHz bus increment is unique for an Athlon motherboard. Only a few weeks ago, I was drooling over a KA7. Now my opinion of the motherboard is much more critical because of the flawed Via drivers and the learning of the non-upgradeability of the KA7. There lies hope with time however. Hopefully, Via will improve the drivers and ABIT will make a stable slocket. However, it is probably smart to wait rather than gamble on the KA7 at this time. The KA7 has some excellent features; it just has two Achilles-heels, one being Via and the other being AMD. You should probably wait for the Socket A version of the KA7 and updated drivers, and then you can be confident in your investment for a long time.[break]UncaMilty was iets positiever, maar zij hadden veel moeite om het bord stabiel aan het werk te krijgen:[/break]There is much to like about the Abit KA7. The expansion options alone make this motherboard worth the purchase price, and the impressive number of tweak-able settings in the BIOS make it a clear winner for the hobbyist. But while I've found it to be completely stable, even at 854MHz, I cannot ignore the amount of tinkering that was required to get it to a working state, even with the CPU running at its default settings. The KA7 is, in my opinion, a BIOS revision or two away from being as close to perfect as you could ask. Thus I'm of mixed feelings about the board. Without a doubt, I consider it worth the effort necessary to get it working right. But until the issues outlined above are dealt with (and the other numerous issues dealt with by the KA7 FAQ), I can only recommend this board to those who are willing to spend the time and considerable effort required. Be ready for anything with the Abit KA7. And once you've got it humming, be ready for some terrific-- and very stable-- performance...

Nu de laatste tijd VIA het goed doet met hun chipsets hebben ze wat meer durf voor vernieuwende snufjes. Hun laatste vinding? Een BIOS waarmee je het internet op kan:

After grabbing more than 50% of the PC chipset market recently, VIA is on the move again with its latest innovation--E-BIOS.

E-BIOS is the combination of a conventional BIOS plus an independent Internet browser. Users would not need another OS to connect to the net. In other words, even if the OS is damaged or the hard drive dies, one can still get on-line. This new innovation will have many applications for both consumers and the vendors.

VIA's browser only uses a little more than 500 Kbytes of memory, which is less than 5% of Netscape Navigator or MS Internet Explorer. To host it together with the BIOS, a 4MB flash ROM will suffice. It's a cost effective solution with many benefits.

Besides PC motherboards, E-BIOS can and will be used extensively on IA products and other embedded solutions.

'Maandag al hebben we overlegd hierover met NSI die het adres wilde verhuizen. Dat hebben we uiteraard proberen tegen te houden, maar dinsdag bleek het plotseling toch in andere handen overgegaan te zijn. Nu is er weer overleg en is het euvel binnen 24 uur verholpen. Gisteren hadden we nog de melding dat er een Windows 2000 versie zou verschijnen voor het Alpha platform. The Register meldt dat dit echter niet het geval is.

Compaq will not port Windows 2000 to the Alpha processor, it confirmed today. That follows a report in WinInfo, labelled exclusive, which suggested that the departure of senior VP Enrico Pesatori had led to the firm changing its mind about the platform.

Richard George, marketing director of Compaq Europe, firmly squashed the reports this morning. He said: "This is absolutely not true. We are not doing NT for Alpha."

Instead, Compaq will stick to its Linux, OpenVMS and Tru64 guns as part of its strategy. Last year, Compaq unexpectedly pulled the plug on its Windows Alpha development, and although a few of its corporate customers were upset by the move, the firm claimed it had successfully moved them to other platforms. ®

The latest glitch in Intel's continuing problems in supplying its microprocessors is unlikely to affect very large tier one vendors such as Dell, but is a blow to the smaller tier two and tier three vendors.

One major European vendor told The Register this morning that the latest shortage applied to all CuMine parts. "My schedule just has a load of blank spaces until the end of July."

Two days back, Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel, warned of continuing shortages in the PC market which could last up to 18 months.

An Intel representative said that the firm would not comment, but re-iterated that additional investment would be put into manufacture, to the tune of $6 billion this year.

Een lading drivers is natuurlijk niet kompleet zonder een nieuwe detonator versie, dus hier versie 5.31 voor Win9x.

Asus heeft ook nog wat nieuwe drivers, namelijk de final 5.16 drivers voor win9x en de final 3.84 voor NT4 en Win2k. Deze drivers kan je allemaal van deze FTP site neerhalen.

Als laatste heeft Abit nog een Bios update klaar liggen voor de BH6 (ID: QN). Deze kan je hier downloaden.

De Nederlandse afdeling van ZDNet heeft de nieuwe IDE Plextor PleXWriter 12/10/32A eens getest. Dankzij de BurnProof technologie was het mogelijk om naast het branden twee hardisken te defraggen en een 500MB ZIP file te maken zonder last te hebben van buffer underruns :

In de PC Labs werd gekozen voor grof geschut en besloot men het branden van een cd-R te combineren met het defragmenteren van twee harde schijven, simultaan met het zippen van 500MB aan gegevens. Normaal is één processorintensieve activiteit al goed voor een mislukt schijfje, laat staan drie. Maar ondanks een CPU die op 100 procent aan het draaien was, slaagde de Plextor om het branden tot een goed einde te brengen.
Het schrijven onder normale omstandigheden verliep zondermeer probleemloos en onze benchmarks leverde heel respectabele cijfers op die niet moeten onderdoen voor die van de duurdere SCSI-Plexwriter 12x-schrijver, dat enkel maanden geleden de testbanken van onze labs passeerden. De PleXWriter 12/10/32A scoorde zelfs beter op de CD-Winbench 99-test en heeft tevens een lagere toegangstijd. Ook het herschrijven verloopt vlot, al zal je speciale cd-RW's moeten aankopen als je aan 6-, 8- of 10-voudige snelheid wilt werken.
Software hebben ze bij de fabrikant niet vergeten: bij het toestel krijgt je WinOnCD, PacketCD, BackMeUp en Plextor Utility Software.

Windows CE krijgt het steeds moeilijker. Na PalmOS hijgt er nu ook een pinguin in hun nek... De eerste Linux-powered PDA's zullen binnekort van de band rollen!

Compaq gaat ontwikkelaars een voor de eigen iPaq-handheld geporteerde Linux aanbieden. Deze stap moet programmeurs aanmoedigen om toepassingen voor deze mobiele Linux-variant te ontwikkelen. Een commerciële versie van de Linux-iPaq zal voorlopig nog niet op de markt verschijnen. Samsung wil echter nog aan het eind van het jaar de Yopy op de markt brengen, die met inzet van een speciale Linux-variant zijn diensten zal moeten verrichten.

Compaq bestempelt het project nog als 'onderzoeksbasis'. Als de inspanningen van de ontwikkelaars voldoende vruchten afwerpen, zal Compaq het alternatieve besturingssysteem verder ondersteunen. De iPaq zal echter alleen als 'Windows Powered' -dus met Windows CE 3.0- worden verkocht; het Linux-OS kan dan achteraf eenvoudig met behulp van een Flash-kaart worden geïnstalleerd.

Samsungs Yopy daarentegen zal alleen met Linux worden verkocht... als deze überhaupt al het levenslicht zal mogen aanschouwen. Na de eerste aankondiging van eind mei van dit jaar werd de marktintroductie steeds verder opgeschoven. Volgens Samsung is Yopy's komst door productieproblemen tot eind oktober uitgesteld. Ondanks dit zijn de eerste fansites al op het internet waargenomen.

Het pinguïn-besturingssysteem is dus ook op handhelds in opmars. Daarmee wordt open source-besturingssysteem nu op alle fronten een concurrentie van Microsoft. Compaqs beslissing om de iPaq alleen met Windows CE te verkopen, is waarschijnlijk vooral bedoeld om de vrede met het Redmondse softwarebedrijf te bewaren. Andere bedrijven, zoals IBM en Intel, gaan daarentegen frontaal in de aanval: Big Blue geeft het Simple Object Access Protocoll (SOAP) gratis weg, terwijl Intel zijn geld inzet op de open source-gemeenschap door een toolkit voor Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) vrij te geven. De ontwikkeling van beide technieken is ironisch genoeg door Microsoft in gang gezet.

Transmeta, het bedrijf achter de Crusoe processor laat weten niet onder de indruk te zijn van Intel's nieuwe mobiele chips die vanwege SpeedStep technologie soms minder dan 1 watt zouden eten. De Crusoe zal systemen pas écht energiezuinig maken terwijl de snelheid gehandhaafd blijft. Hier een hap uit dit artikel van WebWereld:

Transmeta, het bedrijf dat Linux-goeroe Linus Torvalds in dienst heeft, is niet onder de indruk van Intels prestaties. Volgens het bedrijf wil Intel de consument in verwarring brengen met al die verschillende snelheden en voltages.

Bovendien, zegt Transmeta, zijn de processors van Intel helemaal niet zuinig. Enkel als het systeem niet wordt gebruik zou minder dan 1 watt volstaan. Transmeta belooft dat systemen met haar nieuwe Crusoe-chip voluit zullen draaien met een gemiddeld stroomverbruik dat onder de 1 watt ligt. De eerste notebooks met Transmeta-chips zullen waarschijnlijk volgende week worden gepresenteerd tijdens PCExpo in New York.

Eerder meldde The Register al dat de SpeedStep processors van Intel helemaal niet zo zuinig zijn dan aanvankelijk beweerd werd.

Ze zijn erg tevreden over dit bordje dat is uitgerust met 6 PCI sloten, 3 DIMMs, ATA66, 4x AGP en een CNR-slot. Het bord krijgt van de makers van de review een 9 voor performance, een 8 voor overklokken en een 9 voor stabiliteit.":

The K7TPro has the usual FSB settings, VI/O, CPU Core Voltage manipulation but it doesn't come with clock multiplier settings.

Something very special about this board is that if you were to setup the FSB too high e.g. at 120Mhz, it will default itself to 100Mhz, probably the fuzzy logic thingy is built into this board but undocumented. This is indeed a neat feature that MSI has.

The MSI K7TPro is one of the first boards available, it has most of the needed features. I definitely hope to see that there is an option to change the CPU mutliplier to test on this Thunderbird which is most likely to be unlocked. The Thunderbird is such a "hot" product and I think it's unfair to mark down the board because it can't overclock a lot.

BetaNews has reported fresh rumours that Microsoft will build skinning into future versions of Windows, in an attempt to give the OS the theme capabilities of Linux. Right now these are only available from third parties.

We've heard these rumours too and can shed a little more light on the project. We hear that Microsoft does indeed have such a development project on the go, although it's only got semi-official status, and is comprised of developers who worked on the Real Media Player 7 and MSN Mars projects. The goal is to introduce basic themes into Whistler, the consumer version of Windows 2000.

The team has already put together a couple of themes which alter the title bar bitmap and window button bitmaps, but so far, not much else. So in other words, the Whistler version of Windows can be altered to look like... er... Windows.

Redmond's Whistling Skinners (and we'll be disappointed if they don't have their own Morris Dancing troupe) haven't got as far as letting the position of these buttons be altered - a la Macintosh - or introducing effects much beloved of eye candy connoisseurs (and Steve Jobs) like alpha blending.
