Windows 2000 toch niet op Alpha

Gisteren hadden we nog de melding dat er een Windows 2000 versie zou verschijnen voor het Alpha platform. The Register meldt dat dit echter niet het geval is.

Compaq will not port Windows 2000 to the Alpha processor, it confirmed today. That follows a report in WinInfo, labelled exclusive, which suggested that the departure of senior VP Enrico Pesatori had led to the firm changing its mind about the platform.

Richard George, marketing director of Compaq Europe, firmly squashed the reports this morning. He said: "This is absolutely not true. We are not doing NT for Alpha."

Instead, Compaq will stick to its Linux, OpenVMS and Tru64 guns as part of its strategy. Last year, Compaq unexpectedly pulled the plug on its Windows Alpha development, and although a few of its corporate customers were upset by the move, the firm claimed it had successfully moved them to other platforms. ®

My current understanding is that it will be Windows 2000/64, not the 32-bit version that was in progress last year. It's hoped that adding Windows 2000 support will help step the slowing momentum of the Alpha, which has had to rely on Compaq UNIX and Linux for new sales. The market for these products, however, is small and Compaq will need a mass market OS such as Windows to accelerate growth.

Also up in the air are 64-bit versions of the Microsoft Servers products, such as SQL Server and Exchange Server. While the existence of such products is unknown, one might assume that they would be ported as well, since the platform would be severely hampered without them and Microsoft is building 64-bit Intel versions as well.

Papillon, dat komp omdat Compaq Digital heeft over genomen, toen zijn ze begonne aan een compu van 128 kastjes met 128 alpha procs per kast. Op zo'n moment ga je ech niet zelf een osje maken. Op het moment dat zo'n eige os af is zijn al die 16000 procs weer achterhaald en dat wille ze niet want Alpha = ong fl1500 x st 16000 = heel veel poen.
(zijner post is een troll dus kun je hem normaal niet zien)
En ronald, als je microsoft zo iets laat doen heb je , niet lullig bedoeld, grote kans dat het niet snel af komt en dat is wat ze bij compaq wouen, anders hadden ze geen modern OS voor hun procs

Ik denk ook dat ze er verstandig aan doen, (voorlopgi) geen W2000 voor deze grote systemen te maken. W2000 moet zich nl. nog bewijzen binnen grote netwerkomgevingen.
Destijds bij NT beweerde M$ ook, dat deze geschikt was om de concurrentie aan te gaan met de grote Unix-omgevingen. Niet dus.

bovendien .nt4 voor alpha is er wel ,vergeleken bij nt4 is nt5 [win2000] een verbetering,lijkt me sterk dat compaq dat niet wil om hun marktsegment te vergroten...

Ik weet niet waar het vandaan komt dat Compaq NT voor de Alpha zouden ondersteunen. Wat moet je met een shit 32 bits OS'je op een 64 bits machine waar je een dijk van een 64 bits OS op kunt draaien.

Compaq heeft vrij intensief met Microsoft samengewerkt voor de alpha versie.
Het team van Cutler komt van oorsprong ook van Compaq (toen nog digital)
