Philips Semiconductors, an affiliate of Royal Philips Electronics, today announced at an analyst meeting in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, its ambitions for increased growth within the semiconductor industry. Highlights of the presentations included:A key element of the meeting were the investment plans for 2000, which, including our share of the investment in SSMC in Singapore, currently amount to approximately EUR 2.0 billion, compared to EUR 650 million in 1999. ``Philips Semiconductors has stepped-up its investments,'' said Arthur van der Poel, President and CEO, Philips Semiconductors. ``We recognise that increased investment is essential if we are to grow at an even greater rate than before. We are at a par with industry growth rates today and are well positioned for growth in our key markets. The semiconductor market environment supports our ambition to achieve a sales run rate of EUR10 billion by the end of 2002.''
- Sales in Q2 will be approx. 10% above the EUR 1,435 of Q1-00, and more than 50% above Q2-99
- Trebling of order books vs. a year ago
- Planned investments for 2000 EUR 2 billion vs. EUR 650 million in 1999
- Target of EUR 10 billion sales run rate by end 2002
- Rapid growth in communications markets
Philips Semiconductors' sales are at an all time high. Order books have trebled in size compared to a year ago, and sales in Q2 are expected to be approximately 10% above the EUR 1,435 of Q1 2000, and more than 50% above Q2 1999. Despite capacity additions in existing facilities and a number of investments, such as MiCRUS, in East Fishkill, New York, USA which was announced today, Philips Semiconductors will be capacity constrained throughout the year 2000, in line with the entire industry. Regarding the acquisition of VLSI, Mr. Van der Poel said, ``VLSI has been a very good investment for us and our timing for the acquisition could not have been better. Not only does it offer ASIC development tools and methodologies, but high growth opportunities in communications and networking as well.''
Philips Semiconductors aims to be the industry leader in its key communications and consumer markets, with leadership in connected and interconnected systems in the home, on the move and in the car, offering an increasing catalogue of wireless products and systems. The company also aims to be the customer's first choice for complete, cost-effective and easy to use systems-on-silicon for audio, video and communications applications, as well as the leader in standard ICs and discrete semiconductors. Mr. Van der Poel added, ``The most successful semiconductor companies will no longer be the experts in separate markets, but will be the masters in cross-fertilization.''
