PowerLogix heeft vandaag aangekondigd dat het het hun assortiment met G3 en G4 upgrades heeft uitgebreid met iForce processor upgrade voor de oudere 233, 266 en 333MHz iMacs. De upgrades zijn beschikbaar in twee varianten: een 400MHz G3 met 512KB L2 cache en een 500MHz G3 met 1MB cache:

EBN meldt dat Intel nieuwe core revisies van de Pentium III, PIII Xeon en Celeron processors heeft aangekondigd. De nieuwe 'B-0' PIII en Celeron steppings hebben een 5% kleinere die-size. Intel hoopt hiermee de yields en kloksnelheden te kunnen verbeteren. Bij de PIII Xeon hebben de verandering uitsluitend betrekking op de 256KB 'small cache' versies van 733 tot 933MHz. De nieuwe processors komen in september op de markt, samples zijn al vanaf 5 juli beschikbaar. September is toevallig ook de tijd waarop de 1GHz PIII volgens eerdere uitspraken van Intel algemeen leverbaar moet zijn:

Intel Corp. has undertaken a sweeping revision of its microprocessor cores to bump up clock speeds while trimming the die size by 5% to 9%.

According to a summary of product change notifications that Intel is supplying to its customers, "small-cache" Pentium III Xeons, Pentium III desktop microprocessors, and mobile Pentium III and Celeron microprocessors are transitioning from a so-called "B-0" to "C-0" stepping. OEMs suspect that the desktop Celeron is also affected, given that the die is essentially the same size as the Pentium III.

[...] The changes include a new CPU ID number, the correction of errata, and a 5% die shrink. In desktop microprocessors, the new core stepping will be specific to the Pentium III in the SECC or "slot" package.

[...] The new core will affect only those Xeon processors shipped in the 733- to 933-MHz clock speed range. Intel is only revising the core used with the "small cache" versions that integrate 256 Kbytes of level-2 cache. The new processors will be available in September, according to Intel's documentation.

Op Ace's Hardware lees ik dat VIA nu echt een toontje lager gaat zingen met haar Cyrix III processor. Eerder hoorden wij al over de verschrikkelijk slechte resultaten die de Cyrix III op 667MHz behaalde. Nu blijkt ook dat de yields van de Cyrix III zo slecht zijn op die snelheid, dat VIA haar doelen maar heeft aangepast. De Cyrix III moet nu gaan draaien op een snelheid van 500 tot 600MHz, in plaats van 533 tot 667MHz.

I did a bit of searching, and noticed that VIA has revised the frequency range listed on its Cyrix III product page:

This is contrary to the range indicated by the recent, and now recalled, press release: 533 to 667 MHz. The frequency revisions make sense considering they are probably closer to what the Cyrix III is currently yielding at, and also help to place the product in the low-end of the spectrum...below the Celeron and Duron processors, which is where VIA is looking to sell into in the first place.

Speedy 3D heeft een heel interessant artikel hun site op getrapt waarin FSAA in de grond wordt gestampt. Door een duidelijke uitleg met redelijke argumenten wordt duidelijk gemaakt dat volgens deze schrijver FSAA gewoon complete onzin is. Eén van de argumenten is het verlies van details bij gebruik van FSAA, wat onder anderen met dit voorbeeld wordt duidelijk gemaakt:

The difference should now be substantially more noticeable and when you're actually playing a game your eyes will find it harder to focus because of the extra blur. Such is a sign that FSAA is having a bad effect on graphics quality, normally your eyes should adjust instantly and this is only with FSAA on next to nothing.

The second issue with FSAA is one we can all agree on, speed. Supposedly 3dfx's Voodoo5500 could have coped with FSAA and have no real loss in speed. That was until the first review boards arrived and people saw how completely wrong 3dfx could be. Everything, be it a Voodoo6000 or a GeForce2 GTS with 64mb gets a serious slowdown with FSAA on, even when low.

The last of our three problems with FSAA is a simple one; does it really make games any better? The answer is no, but perhaps not for the reason(s) you are all thinking. FSAA only actually improves the image quality when you are totally still, it does it when you move but because of current monitor technology and our own eyes, the difference can't be seen.

This is because the human eye also blurs images ever so slightly when moving to create its own (vastly more effective) FSAA effect. When you turn around in a game then spotting the advantages of FSAA is very difficult, if you are running forwards and turning slightly then it should still just be noticeable.

BeNews heeft zoals ze het zelf zeggen een preview in elkaar gezet van de nieuwe OpenGL drivers voor BeOS 5. Maar wat veel leuker is: ze vergelijken de OpenGl performance van BeOS niet alleen met de oude drivers maar ook met Linux en Windows 98. De resultaten zijn erg gunstig voor BeOS, in een behoorlijk aantal benchmarks is zelfs win98 niet sneller dan BeOS :

So, it's official people, for this PC configuration and by testing with Quake(s), BeOS smokes Windows and Linux in OpenGL performance! On both games, we saw that while BeOS is a bit faster or almost the same with Windows on the 640x480 resolution, its performance degrades dangerously on a 800x600+ resolution. I think that R. Jason Sams and Andrew Kimpton at Be, should give a bit more notice on the issue and try to optimize the drivers for higher resolutions.

[...] It's obvious that Be did a good job with the OpenGL re-write. The new OpenGL implementation it will initially support Matrox G200/G400, SiS 6220, Intel 810 and Voodoo2/3/4/5. And if you own a SIMD-enabled processesor(s), the gaming experience under BeOS will be extremely pleasurable.

Ik lees bij ZDNet Nederland dat IBM vandaag een 1GB versie heeft gepresenteerd van haar Microdrive, een klein schijfje dat makkelijk in de palm van je hand rust en slechts 28 gram weegt. Tegen het eind van dit jaar zal hij gebruikt worden in o.a. notebooks en high-end digitale camera's:

Computerfabrikant IBM toonde vandaag een nieuwe toevoeging aan de MicroDrive-familie, met een capaciteit die driemaal hoger ligt dan de vorige editie. De harde schijf van 1 GB past perfect in de palm van de hand en weegt minder dan 28 gram. Aansluiting gebeurt via een CF+ Type II slot en via een PCMCIA-adapter. Ook de weerstand aan schokken is in de nieuwste versie sterk verbeterd. Terwijl de 340MB MicroDrive statisch tegen schokken van 1.000G kon, is dat nu verhoogd tot 1,500G. Tegen het einde van de zomer zal de MicroDrive verschijnen in toestellen van Acer, Casio, Kodak, HP, Nikon en Psion. Deze technologie van IBM is echter niet van de goedkoopste. De lanceerprijs van de 1GB MicroDrive zal 499 dollar zijn, terwijl je voor 512MB honderd dollar minder op tafel moet leggen. De mini-schijven vinden vooral een toepassing in ultradure notebooks, high end digitale camera's en PDA's, al droomt IBM van exotische applicaties zoals in kleding geïntegreerde computers en gesofisticeerde portefeuilles.

Bij Gamers Depot hebben ze eens gekeken naar de AOpen 8x4x32 MP3 IDE cd-herfikker. Helaas voor AOpen fans kwam het ding erg brak uit de test vanwege slechte read & write snelheden en een magere software bundel. Volgens de specs heeft de drive ook maar een 2MB buffer wat de helft minder is dan de meeste andere 8/4/32 modellen.

Normally, you really don’t get the full speed advertised on any CD drive in real world use, but this AOpen drive gave us a fairly mediocre number when running CDTach 98. At 13.8x average over three passes with the test, we have a much lower read speed than the other ATAPI/EIDE 8x4x32x drive we’ve tested, the HP CD-Writer Plus 9110i. When we tested it last November, that drive gave Gamers Depot an average of 21.1x read speed. At 1/3 less speed than the HP, you can see why we’re a little concerned about the performance of the AOpen drive.

Using Xing AudioCatalyst, we next tested digital audio extraction. We got a decent score of 14.4x when extracting to a .wav file on the hard drive.

We then burned a full CD’s worth of files using the NTI CD-Maker software, and ended up with a less than optimal total burn time of 11:13. This is not what we expect from an 8x burner – we should be getting times of less than 9 minutes with a true 8x speed.

Jeff Lee van GamePC heeft een review online gekegeld van het Asus CUV4X VIA Apollo Pro 133Z moederbord met 1xAGP Pro, 5xPCI, 1xISA, 1xAMR en 3xDIMM. Het plankje bleek zeer relaxt te zijn voor overklokken: een P3-500 draaide stabiel op 800MHz met een FSB van 160MHz:

Overclocking is done through the BIOS or onboard dip switches, the CUV4X offers front side bus settings going up to 166 MHz. Though we doubt a CPU can use that high of a FSB due to AGP and PCI cards flaking out, it is quite enticing to try your luck. Along with the fact that memory divider are on this motherboard front side bus speed up to 150 is possible. Our overclocking experience was quite good, right off we were able to hit 667 MHz (133 MHz) without any problems. Pushing our test bed a little further we hit 750 MHz (150 MHz), which we were glad to see. In the past our 750-775 was basically our limit but we decided to go one more step and try the 160 front side bus setting. And proving many of us wrong, the CUV4X posted and worked at 800 MHz (160 MHz). Being our first motherboard to actually overclock our P3 500 to 800 was quite a joy. Though we did notice the speed improvement in Windows, benchmarking showed us some interesting facts. Memory performance dropped like a rock due to the -33 memory setting. Drive marks and Graphics marks however skyrocketed. So there is a little give and take action going on here when overclocking with this motherboard.

The Duron has a lot to like. It is inexpensive as well as a good performer. It has to have the best $/performance ratio than any other processor out there. It will be easy to make a low cost and powerful system that is almost on par with the classic Athlon systems in performance, but much less expensive.

The Duron also consumes a good deal less power than the Thunderbird or classic Athlon. That may not seem important, but the less power consumed means less heat is given off and allows for more power for the other system components. Overall it is much less of a strain on the power supply and your heatsink.

Negatives: At this point the biggest possible negative is overclocking. There is still not a clear cut solution as far as changing the clock multiplier and it is unknown as to whether slotkets will be sucessful. Other than that motherboard availability is the only other thorn in the Durons side, and one that will be remedied shortly according to board companies I have talked to.

XS4All bekent te hebben overwogen om geen ADSL abonnement meer te gaan aanbieden vanwege grote aanloopperikelen aan de kant van de KPN. Hier een stukkie uit dit nieuwsbericht van WebWereld:

XS4ALL klaagt in het bericht openlijk over haar eigenaar. Zo zou KPN nog helemaal niet klaar zijn voor de introductie van snel internet via de telefoonkabel. "De KPN beheerorganisatie is nog niet volledig ingericht voor de levering en beheer van Mxstream", aldus XS4ALL.

Daarnaast zou de 'organisatorische en technische afstemming' tussen de internetaanbieder en KPN gebrekkig zijn. Uit het bericht blijkt verder dat de invoer van ADSL wellicht is onderschat. Onder de 'aanloopperikelen' valt ook de 'complexe uitrol van de technische infrastructuur in telefooncentrales die benodigd is voor Mxstream'.

Unlike SCSI, IDE/ATAPI is a storage device only bus, you can only connect storage devices, such as hard disks, CD-ROMs and ZIP drives to the IDE bus. By comparison, SCSI is a true system bus that can accept and communicate with numerous types of devices, including scanners, and other specialized devices.

Generally, IDE/ATAPI tends to be slower than SCSI, but it's also cheaper and easier to implement. IDE can only accept 2 devices per channel, while SCSI can accept up to 7 (or more) devices per chain. Recent Advances in IDE technology have pushed the speed of the IDE bus up to 100MB/s top speed. This puts IDE right up against SCSI when it comes to transfer speed. However, this does not change the fact SCSI is still capable of achieving a higher overall data throughput.

Dit gebeurde na werkzaamheden aan de 'op tekst gebaseerde online informatie systemen' Viewdata en Prestel. Sinds het Web commercieel is geworden, schuilt in dit patent een potentiële goudmijn. Het telecombedrijf is ervan overtuigd dat het een goede kans maakt om de zaak te winnen.

WebWereld bericht over een nieuw variant van het I Love you virus genaamd 'Life Stages'. Het virus maakt gebruik van de extensie SHS (Shell Script) en verspreidt zich (uiteraard) via het adresboek van Outlook Express en via IRC. Gelukkig richt Life Stages geen grote schade aan mocht je geïnfecteerd zijn:

Gewaarschuwd wordt om bijlagen van e-mailberichten met onderwerpen die lijken op 'Funny', 'FW:Funny', 'Life stages text', 'Jokes', 'Funny text' en 'FW:Funny text' niet te openen.

In het bericht staat een verhaal over de relatie tussen mannen en vrouwen. Bijgevoegd is een bestand met de naam: 'LIFE_STAGES.TXT.SHS'. Door opening van het bestand verspreidt het virus zich via het adresboek. Kopieën van de verzonden e-mail worden automatisch verwijderd om ontdekking te verkomen.

[...] De Love Bug-variant vormt een bedreiging voor gebruikers van Microsoft Outlook, mIRC en Pirch IRC. Life Stages verspreidt zich snel, maar richt geen permanente schade aan. Het verandert een aantal belangrijke instellingen en bemoeilijkt het opnieuw opstarten van de PC. Door snelle vermenigvuldiging kunnen mailservers wel overbelast raken. Om ontdekking te voorkomen verandert het virus steeds van uiterlijk.

Het Amerikaanse anti-virus bedrijf Trend Micro ontdekte vrijdag vier gevallen van besmetting. Het virus verspreidde zich in het weekend over miljoenen PC's in Amerika, Australië en Azië. Veel bedrijven moesten hun mailsystemen uitschakelen.

In tegenstelling tot Sharky Extreme weet Thresh's Firingsquad wel een objectieve review over de i815 te schrijven en daar komen ze dan ook op een heel andere conclusie uit dan SE: de i815 performance is slechter dan de 2 jaar oude BX chipset en dus een teleurstelling ipv. een waardige opvolger :

If you were hoping the 815 chipset would offer BX-class performance without an expensive price tag, chances are you're disappointed with our 815 results, and quite frankly, we are too.

With the increased bandwidth 815 offers over the BX chipset, plus the added support of ATA-66/100, 133MHz FSB, and AGP 4X, we initially considered 815 a solid contender to 820 for use in performance desktop PC's. Now we're questioning if it's even a solid BX replacement!

With the newer BX motherboards, overclocking the BX chipset to bus speeds above (and beyond) 133MHz is pretty common, but it still isn't guaranteed to work for everyone. If you're not ready to fork over the money for RDRAM and an 820 motherboard and like to play things safe, (in terms of AGP overclocking) this leaves VIA's Apollo Pro133A chipset as your primary option.

Op basis van exact 2 (ja daar staat 2) benchmarks komen ze tot de conclusie dat de i815 een redelijk goede opvolger is van de BX chipset en dat je de onboard video niet eens moet proberen:

In the end, we really liked the i815E. On the one hand, the performance is there, Intel's reputation backs up the stability and compatibility, and you don't have to buy expensive RDRAM. On the other hand, the motherboards will be a bit expensive, RDRAM prices have dropped dramatically, i820E motherboards have all the same features and will be a little bit faster, availability will be low for quite a while, and the i815E is highly picky about PC133 memory.

If you're looking to buy a top performing Intel system, i820 or i820E are the way to go, though you have to pay for the performance. If you're looking for a low-cost Intel solution, a 440BX solution is the way to go. But if you want the best mix of price, performance and features, the i815E is the winner. The i815's price advantage does not outweigh its lack of features compared to the i815E, so we recommend you not bother with it. In fact, several Taiwan motherboard makers we spoke to had no plans for i815 motherboards but huge plans for i815E.

Je kan het geloven of niet, maar het bedrijf RealVision gaat een Voodoo II kaart op de markt brengen met TnL support. De kaart die VREngine heet, bestaat uit 2 Voodoo II chippies (onboard SLI) en een GA400 chippie om te zorgen dat ie kan TnL'en :

The board called "VREngine" will be powered by one or two Voodoo 2 chipsets (onboard-SLI). RealVision added their own geometry engine "GA400". The silicon is clocked at 100 MHz and computes 9.1 Gigaflops, which results in 12 millions polygons per second. The chip features the common T&L functionality like transformation, clipping, culling, volume clipping and specular lighting (parallel, spot, point).

[...] There are 16 simultanous light sources supported. The T&L chip has its own memory interface (64bit SDRAM). Unfortuantly, the limited triangle setup rate of the voodoo 2 core limits the performacne of the card to 3 million polygons per second. Therefore, RealVision manufactures cards based on NEC's PEC-Rasterizer, which offers clearly more power than the good old Voodoo 2. RealVision is able to scale the geometry performance by adding more chips (up to 8). They already offer a model using 2 T&L processors.

Het is niet zo dat het me waarschijnlijk lijkt dat deze kaart bijzonder snel wordt, eerder bijzonder bagger. Maar de prestatie dat je TnL hebt toegevoegd op een Voodoo II is er niet minder om.

Storage Review schrijft dat Seagate eerder dan verwacht is begonnen met de levering van de nieuwe 15.000rpm Cheetah X15 stijve-plasser schijf. De X15 is door deze strakke actie van Seagate zelfs eerder op de markt dan de Quantum Atlas 10K II, een schijf die al aan het eind van de vorige eeuw werd aangekondigd. De review die Storage Review enkele weken geleden publiceerde laat zien dat de Atlas 10K II keihard voorbij wordt gefietst door de 15.000rpm vloot van Seagate. De prijs van de Cheetah X15 blijkt bovendien mee te vallen: $635 voor de 18,2GB versie is niet extreem veel hoger dan de prijzen van minder snelle 10.000rpm SCSI schijven:

Met de investering wordt de produktiecapaciteit opgevoerd met zo'n 7900 vierkante meter tot zo'n 14900 vierkante meter. Als laatste was er ook nog te lezen dat ze bij de bouw rekening zouden houden met de mogelijkheid van 300mm wafers, hoewel in het begin nog 200mm wafers zullen worden gebruikt.

The $2.0 billion investment, which the government hailed as a massive vote of confidence in its technology policies, will add 1,000 jobs at Intel's European manufacturing site at Leixlip, west of Dublin, which currently employs 4,400.

The Leixlip plant produces high-performance Pentium III and Intel Celeron processors. Intel will have invested $4.5 billion in Ireland by 2003, boosting Ireland's ambitions to become a leading high-technology country within Europe.

Intel said the expansion project would add 50,000 square feet initially to the plant, with first production set to start in late 2001. In a second phase, an additional 85,000 square feet of clean room manufacturing capacity would be added. A spokesman estimated current capacity at around 160,000 square feet. He declined to estimate chip output.

The new factory will initially manufacture on 200-millimeter silicon wafers but will be capable of moving on to the next generation of manufacturing technology on 300mm wafers, Intel said.
