News.com meldt dat de release van de Intel Timna met enkele maanden is uitgesteld. Timna is een op de Celeron gebaseerde processor met geïntegreerde graphics, I/O en memory controller. Aanvankelijk was het de bedoeling dat Timna systemen met Rambus geheugen uitgerust zouden worden, maar door de hoge prijzen en beperkte produktie van RIMRAM's heeft Intel dat plan laten varen.
Het probleem dat nu is ontstaan ligt in de Memory Translator Hub, die vertaalslag maakt tussen het SDRAM protocol en de Rambus memory controller van de chipset. De ontdekking van de MTH bug had vorige maand al tot gevolg dat 1 miljoen i820+SDRAM moederplanken door Intel werden teruggeroepen. Intel kan de MTH problemen niet op tijd fixen en heeft daarom besloten om de introductie van Timna uit te stellen:
Intel said it found it could not rework the MTH in time to launch Timna as scheduled in the second half of this year. Instead, the company will wait for a redesigned memory interface and launch Timna in the first quarter of next year.Timna is Intel's first integrated chip, combining the processor, memory controller and graphics functions onto a single piece of silicon
"What we've now determined is the MTH product will not meet Intel's standards for quality and reliability," said Intel spokesman Seth Walker.
The chip giant had originally designed the chip to use specialized Rambus-based memory but decided the cost of the memory would be too high. To allow the chip to use standard memory, Intel had planned to use an MTH chip similar to the one used with the 820.
