Tech-Report maakt melding van onofficiële benchmarks met een Asus A7N266-V nForce 420 moederbord. Dit moederbord wordt geprijsd op 234 euro. De resultaten van de benchmark, waarin eerst één 256MB DIMM en daarna twee 128MB DIMMS zijn gebruikt om het TwinBank geheugenmanagement te testen, zijn enigszins verwarrend. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt de configuratie met TwinBank 5 tot 6 procent sneller dan de configuratie met één DIMM. Maar de tests wijzen uit dat in Graphics WinMark 99 de TwinBank configuratie 66 procent langzamer is. JC-News zei het volgende:
Of course, it is always possible that the nForce may be slower than competing chipsets in single channel mode or even in dual channel mode. You must remember that this is nVidia's 1.5th attempt at a chipset (the X-Box is their "first" attempt, even though it comes out after the nForce), so they certainly could have made mistakes this time around. It should also be noted that a lot of the resources which were
expected to be available to do this work have either not materialized
as expected or have dropped off the face of the earth. There were 15
people (not counting Apple's participating engineers) involved at the
SMPng kick-off, for example, yet not a single one of them has been
actively involved with the project for the last 6 months, all such
work falling to a single engineer (John Baldwin) who was not even
present at the first planning meeting.

I normally wouldn't pay attention to this, but that recent note (posted here) about that south bridge being finished (the one that could have been for K8/Hammer) made this post at least slightly interesting. It suggests that Hammer may be sampling in some fashion or other. I believe that AMD's official stance on sampling the K8 microarchitecture was for a Q4 date, though that might have been moved to Q1 on the roadmaps (I cannot remember, as forgot to take my brain pills today).

The installer behaved much as it would on any Windows or Macintosh system, but I did chuckle over the QuickTime install program wanting to place its wares in C:/Program Files/QuickTime. At the heart of the agreement is IBM's Blue Gene research project, which combines advanced protein science with IBM's next-generation cellular architecture supercomputer design. Unlike today's computers, cellular servers will run on chips containing "cells," which are processors that contain memory and communications circuits. Cellular architecture will help scale computer performance from teraflops (1 trillion calculations per second) to petaflops (1,000 trillion calculations per second).
