Computer Sciences Corp. heeft het systeem van distributed.net omgekeerd. Ze gaan namelijk via internet processortijd verkopen op een aantal supercomputers, van een "simpele" HP N Class met 8 processors tot een heuse Cray T3E-1200E met 816 processors. Bedrijven die het geld voor een supercomputer zelf niet op kunnen hoesten kunnen op deze manier toch profijt hebben van enorme rekenkracht. Er zijn verschillende pakketten te koop, van Platinum voor de mensen met veel haast (en geld ) tot Bronze, voor wat minder bedeelden die tevreden zijn met een lage prioriteit:

The El Segundo-based company said the new service would offer access through a Web portal to its existing High Performance Computing (HPC). Called e-HPC.com, the service is open to a wide range of software types that a customer might be using.

``I think we are the first to do this on a professional basis,'' said John Rawlins, director of Supercomputing Operations within CSC's Global Infrastructure Services (GIS) division. Rawlins said there were a handful of universities in the United States and Europe that share supercomputers with outside companies.

CSC's service is aimed at long-term contracts as well as project-by-project deals with companies and other organizations that need high-powered computing to process huge amounts of data. Rawlins said typical users might be companies in biotechnology, engineering, seismic exploration and mapping or molecular science.

The Register bericht dat de officiële introductie van de Itanium is verplaatst naar maart 2001. Intel woordvoerders zouden dit hebben aangegeven op de Systems 2000 beurs in München, waar Dell een quad Itanium PowerEdge server demonstreerde. De Itanium / Merced is befaamd om z'n bijzonder elastische release date. Oorspronkelijk was het de bedoeling dat Intel's eerste IA-64 proc in 1997 op de markt zou komen, maar die doelstelling is klaarblijkelijk niet gehaald. Tussen nu en maart heeft Intel voor eind dit jaar nog wel een 'pilot release' van de Itanium gepland:

The Intel stand has a selection of Itanic systems on show, including a Dell PowerEdge housing no fewer than four CPUs and running an early version of M$' 64-bit Whistler OS, build 2257, running mySQL and interacting with SAP under Linux.

Loose tongues on the Intel booth hint broadly that the famously-elastic official launch date for Itanic has now been firmly nailed down for March 2001.

The Register komt weer eens met spectaculair verhaal. Omdat Microsoft geweigerd zou hebben om te werken met de trage x86-64 simulator van AMD, zou de processorbakker de hulp van Transmeta hebben ingeschakeld. In het geheim zouden ze samen met Microsoft bezig zijn om de codemorphing software die Transmeta gemaakt heeft om x86 naar VLIW te vertalen uit te breiden met de x86-64 features. Microsoft zou op die manier een development platform krijgen om Windows Whistler compatible te maken met AMD's uitbreiding op de x86 architectuur:

The deal probably originates in AMD's cosying up to Transmeta earlier this year on the subject of power management, but specifically got going, we're told, because the simulator AMD shipped Microsoft was a dud. The fact that Microsoft was shipped a simulator at all makes it clear the company intended to support AMD, but Microsoft's refusal to work with the cripplingly slow code it got from AMD was the catalyst.

So what does AMD do? Call for super-morpher. According to our sources, Transmeta modified the software to morph standard x86 to VLIW, along with all the Sledgehammer extensions and the differences from Pentium 3. Despite the presence of the Demon Torvalds on the Transmeta roster, you can see how this kind of approach might entrance Microsoft's high command.

Computer Planet meldt er gisteren een lek is gevonden in de IIS server van ZDNet NL. De site bleek gevoelig te zijn voor de Unicode bug, die het mogelijk maakt om vanuit je browser door de drives van de server te fietsen. Ook het moven, trashen en wijzigen van files is hierbij mogelijk. De grap van dit hele verhaal is dat ZDNet NL juist gisteren berichtte over de hack van Microsoft en het gebruik van de sinds 18 oktober bekende Unicode exploit :

De Computer Planet werd gisteravond benaderd door iemand die de kwetsbaarheid van ZDNet Nederland had aangetoond. De precieze procedure en/of webadressen publiceren we uiteraard niet. ZDNet Nederland berichtte gisteren dat een server van Microsoft door een Nederlandse hacker met alias Dimitri was gehacked. ZDNet: 'Dimitri maakte gebruik van een bekende kwetsbaarheid in de Internet Information Server (IIS) van Microsoft.' Dat de site waarop dit artikel staat last heeft van hetzelfde lek, maakt de melding pikant.

Het lek is namelijk al op 18 oktober door Microsoft gedocumenteerd én gedicht met een patch of reparatie-software. De Internet Information Server (ISS) van Microsoft is gevoelig voor de zogenaamde Unicode Bug, waarvan de gevolgen verstrekkend kunnen zijn. Een systeem dat nog niet van de laatste patch is voorzien, kan op eenvoudige wijze worden gemanipuleerd.

ZDNet heeft een interessant artikeltje online gezet over Microsoft's Tablet PC. De Tablet PC is nu alleen nog maar een concept, maar moet volgens Microsoft ooit de huidige PC gaan opvolgen. Het apparaat heeft een uiterlijk en bediening als veel andere WebPads die onlangs de revue passeerden, maar heeft alle functies van een notebook in zich. Bovendien kan de Tablet PC behalve met een pen ook met de stem bestuurd worden. Op dit moment draait het prototype op Windows 2000 en de Transmeta Crusoe processor, maar dat zal naar alle waarschijnlijkheid nog wel veranderen voordat het apparaat in 2003 (!) op de markt komt.

Zondag, in zijn Comdex-speech, zal William H. meer uitleg geven over zijn geesteskindje. Tot die tijd moeten we het met deze specificaties doen:

IBM heeft aangekondigd dat zij een deal met Iomega hebben gemaakt over de verkoop van IBM Microdrives onder de Iomega merknaam in Noord Amerika. De Microdrive is de kleinste harddisk ter wereld en heeft het formaat van een type II plus PC Card. De capaciteit van de mini harddisks varieert van 340Meg tot 1GB. Iomega zal de 340MB versie bundelen met een PC Card adapter en Iomega's Quik Sync 2 file management en backup tooltje:

Op Tommies Hardware Guide is een uitgebreid artikel verschenen over mobiele Intel CPU's. Er wordt in het artikel meer uitgelegd dan ik hier kan opsommen, maar wat onder andere aan bod komt is het volgende: het energieverbruik van notebooks, ontwikkeling energieverbruik en snelheden van mobiele CPU's, heatinks, BGA-1, BGA-2 en meer van dit soort semi standaarden. Verder wordt er ook nog uitgebreid in gegaan op het koelen van notebooks, en hoe ingenieus alles in elkaar zit. Make sure that your Pentium III Motherboard monitors the thermal diode of the CPU. Enter the Motherboard BIOS and go to the Hardware Monitor Setup. Lift the CPU fan a bit and you can monitor the CPU temperature rise within seconds, until the Motherboard BIOS enters the ACPI modus or the CPU shuts itself down. In most cases the Motherboard BIOS enters the ACPI mode (hangs up the system) to prevent further damage to the CPU.

Don't do this with AMD Athlon CPUs! AMD Athlon CPUs do not have this feature inside the CPU. If your fan stops, is not mounted correctly or if it is not pressed to the CPU very tightly, your CPU will get fried within seconds beyond recovery!

When the junction temperature reaches 135 °C, the Pentium III processor will stop executing all instructions. This is signaled to the system with the THERMTRIP# (Thermal trip) signal. The processor will remain stopped until RESET# goes active via Restart or Reset-Switch.

The goal of every thermal design must be to dissipate TDPmax and avoid reaching T_junction with a safe margin.

Meer slecht nieuws voor Transmeta. Eerder kon je al lezen dat IBM voorlopig niet gaat beginnen aan Transmeta processoren in haar laptops. Er was nog één grote computermaker over die Transmeta's processoren misschien zou implementeren: Compaq. Compaq heeft veel geld geïnvesteerd in Transmeta, maar verklaarde al een half jaar geleden dat zij nog lang niet zeker waren of zij de processoren zouden toepassen. De performance viel toen volgens Compaq nogal tegen.

ZDNet weet ons in dit bericht te melden dat zij uit 'betrouwbare bronnen' vernomen hebben dat ook Compaq nu besloten heeft de Transmeta processoren niet op te nemen in hun notebooks; zij zouden meer vertrouwen hebben in de nieuwe low-power mobile Pentium III's. De Pentium III liet volgens bronnen bij Intel een betere prijs/prestatie-verhouding zien:

Sources at the company said that the Crusoe chips it was working with, likely the TM5400 or TM5600, did not show clear price and performance advantages over the new Pentium III.

Some of the benchmarks also did not show good results, sources said.[break]Het is ook mogelijk dat Compaq het spelletje niet zo mooi heeft gespeeld en dat de onderzoeken en investeringen van Compaq in Transmeta alleen bedoeld waren om Intel te dwingen hun prijzen te verlagen voor Compaq.

Analisten verwachten ook dat het een stuk moeilijker zal zijn voor Transmeta om het hoofd boven water te houden, nu Intel veel nadruk begint te leggen op low-power processoren:[/break]"Consequently Transmeta has had to pay for a reference design at Quanta, so that Tier 2/3 OEMs can private label the product. So, Transmeta's grip on this market is precarious. Now that Intel has stopped ignoring the needs of the growing mobile market, Transmeta will find it more difficult to sustain an advantage," said Kumar.

GamePC heeft een review gepost van de Tyan Thunder i840, een stijve-plasser dual Socket 370 i840 tafelplank met onboard Ultra160 SCSI, twee ethernet poorten, 64-bit PCI, onboard ATi video, AGP Pro slot en 4 RIMM slots. Helaas komt al dit moois tegen een nogal heftige prijs (reserveer 800 tot 900 dollar plus wat poen voor RIMRAM) en maken de buitensporige afmetingen de plaatsing van het bord zelfs in een full tower problematisch. De prestaties van het bord zijn dankzij de twee Rambus channels erg goed in de geheugen benchmarks, maar bij de applicatie en CPU benchmarks kan de plank nauwelijks afstand nemen van de goedkopere i820 en ServerWorks ServerSet III LE chipsets:

The Tyan Thunder i840 is a great performing and superbly engineered motherboard, and is absolutely the nicest overall Pentium III multiprocessor board we've placed our hands on. Of course, this comes at a price, namely the large number on the price tag. You can expect to pay between $800 - $900 for this motherboard in most locations. So is it worth it? With the Pentium 4 so close, it's hard to say for the high-end workstation market. For gamers, this is simply overkill, and you won't need this much power/expansion. For servers, this board is just about the most perfect board I've seen yet.

Digital Silence bericht dat Microsoft en Compaq samen verder werken aan software, hardware en diensten om van Microsoft's Mobile Information 2001 Server en het Internet Cellular Smart Access (ICSA)-platform succesvolle producten te maken. Dit product moet het makkelijk maken om internet-diensten aan te bieden aan gebruikers van mobiele devices als mobiele telefoons en PDA's.

Compaq heeft al veel hardware-kennis in huis en heeft duidelijk laten zien iets van mobiele apparaten af te weten met de release van de iPaq PocketPC. Een reden voor Microsoft om (nog) meer samen te werken met Compaq. Mobile Information Server is het eerste product dat gebaseerd is op Microsoft's ICSA platform:

Heise Online meldt dat de duitse software-toko Mulki&Vogt op de Systems 2000 beurs in München een proggie heeft gedemonstreerd waarmee Unix, Linux en Windows servers via WAP beheerd kunnen worden. Binnen twee weken wil het bedrijf een demo versie van het admintooltje loslaten op Wapmin.net. De prijs van het volledige pakket zal circa 3000 euro bedragen:

Met de hulp van The Druid en Marger kunnen we op de website van Het Financieele Dagblad lezen dat ons geliefde kabelbedrijf Casema overgenomen wordt door het Britse NTL. Dit bedrijf, dat de grootste kabelaar van Engeland is, neemt het belang van France Telecom in Casema over. Het prijskaartje zou tussen de 4 en 7 miljard gulden liggen.

Volgens bronnen rondom Casema wordt er tussen ƒ 4 en 7 mrd betaald voor Casema. De Fransen namen Casema drie jaar geleden voor ƒ 1,7 mrd over van onder andere KPN.

Naar verluidt betalen de Britten de Fransen in aandelen. France Telecom heeft al een kwart van NTL in handen. Dat belang wordt nu sterk uitgebreid.

NTL heeft de laatste 18 maanden al elf overnames gepleegd. Vorige week maakte het Britse bedrijf bekend 1300 van zijn 22.000 werknemers te zullen ontslaan. NTL is aan de Amerikaanse technologiebeurs Nasdaq genoteerd. Het nam eerder voor ƒ 29 mrd de kabelpoot van Cable & Wireless over.

Op CNET.com staat een uitgebreide preview van Whistler Beta 1 te lezen. Interessant is een functie die het mogelijk maakt om Windows 9x only programma's en spellen te kunnen draaien. Whistler doet dit door tijdens de setup procedure van zo'n programma de register en folder structuur van Windows 9x na te bootsen.
Er zijn helaas geen nieuwe screenshots te vinden.

Microsoft built Whistler on the Windows 2000 code (that is, NT), which is none too compatible with much home-use hardware and software. For example, hundreds of games can't run under Windows 2000 because their setup routines manage only Windows 95/98 system folders and Registry settings. Since game developers aren't terribly interested in writing for an OS designed for offices, it falls to Microsoft to fix the problem, and the company has made a start with Whistler in the form of a program called AppFixes.

To help Whistler play major software meant to run on Windows 95/98, Microsoft has built a clunky if effective workaround: Whistler recognizes the offending program's setup routine, fools it into thinking the PC is running a compatible version of Windows, and mimics a Windows 95-style Registry and setup folders. It's not a panacea, but this trick solves problematic NT incompatibilities nicely for anyone who wants to run Whistler at home. Microsoft claims that more than 300 NT-incompatible programs will run on Whistler. At the very least, Beta 1 installed smoothly and successfully ran games, such as Madden NFL and Tomb Raider, that don't work under Windows 2000.

De CEO van de RIAA heeft de CEO van Napster gezegt dat hij zijn excuus moet aanbieden aan Metallica. Op die mannier kan Napster bewijzen dat ze serieus zijn in hun doel 'legaal' te worden. Napster heeft hier natuurlijk geen zin in en meent dat dit gelijk zou zijn aan toegeven dat wat ze doen eigenlijk toch niet door de beugel kan. En dat is volgens Napster waar de RIAA werkelijk op uit is.

Napster must apologise to rock band Metallica, if it's to convince the music industry that it's serious about becoming a 'legitimate' - in the recording companies' eyes - operation.

Nice try, Hilary, but we think Napster will see through this one, and will be as willing to say sorry to Metallica for the bands' alleged losses due to contributory copyright theft as Australian Prime Minister John Howard is to apologise to the Aboriginal people for past atrocities perpetuated against them.

Why? Because an apology would be tantamount to admitting Metallica's allegations were correct and that the MP3 sharing company is indeed contributing to copyright theft, and it sure as hell isn't going to say that, last week's deal with Bertelsmann Music Group notwithstanding.

Such an admission is really what the RIAA is after here.

Mortin van ApusHardware heeft de SuperOrb eens onder de loep genomen in deze review. De SuperOrb is twee keer zo groot als de Chrome Orb en heeft twee coolers binnen in het koelprofiel. De reviewer is niet echt positief over de SuperOrb en beoordeelt het apparaatje met 41%, met name omdat hij nogal veel moest slopen voordat de cooler goed op z'n Abit KT7 mamaplank zat:

The SO is retailing for around $25 right now. $25 isn't that much for a heatsink, but considering the $15 Vantec heatsink totally annihilates it is pretty sad. What more do I need to say?

In conclusion, this heatsink sucks. It doesn't fit right, it may ruin your CPU while installing, it costs too much, and worst of all, it performs horribly. To top it off it's ridiculously loud. Steer clear, folks.

Eerder meldden wij dat vanaf 15 november ook particulieren een domeinnaam kunnen registreren. Het CDA is bang dat de invoering van deze particuliere domeinnamen een grote chaos tot gevolg zal hebben. Volgens Tweede Kamerlid Joop Wijn van het CDA is de registratie van nieuwe domeinnamen nu al een chaos, en zal die alleen maar groter worden. Het CDA klaagt dat de Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland (SIDN) nu al nauwelijks controleert of domeinnamen wel door de beugel kunnen en of ze eerlijk worden toegewezen. Met de invoering van een automatisch systeem zal dit alleen nog maar erger worden:

Volgens het CDA zal er een run op domeinnamen ontstaan door particulieren, waarbij ook 'onfatsoenlijke' namen worden geregistreerd. Dit zou weer een zware belasting voor rechters betekenen, die zich moeten gaat buigen op allerlei domeinnaamkwesties.

Bart Boswinkel, directeur van de SIDN, kan weinig met de kritiek. "De term 'fatsoenlijk' is een onwerkbare kreet", stelt Boswinkel. "De principiële vraag is: wie bepaalt wat fatsoenlijk is?" Verder is een eventuele lijst met onfatsoenlijke domeinnamen in praktische zin onwerkbaar volgens Boswinkel. Er zijn namelijk altijd eindeloze variaties op een verboden woord mogelijk.

[...] In plaats van controle vooraf ziet de SIDN meer in het achteraf terugdraaien van een aanvraag. Het nieuwe reglement voorziet daarin. Iedereen kan bezwaar aandienen tegen een bepaalde naam. Deze klacht wordt dan doorgestuurd naar een nog in te stellen onafhankelijk college, die dan uitspraak zal doen. Dit kan nog een jaar na de registratie. "Dit is de enig werkbare situatie", aldus Boswinkel.

WebWereld schrijft dat het zeer goed gaat met netwerkgigant Cisco Systems. Met een winststijging van het afgelopen kwartaal van zo'n 67% ten opzichte van vorig jaar is het bedrijf optimistischer dan ooit. Te verwachten is dat de goede cijfers onder andere veroorzaakt zijn door een aantal overnames die Cisco het afgelopen jaar heeft gedaan:

Netwerkgigant Cisco ziet de omzet en winst met tweederde stijgen en verhoogt de verwachtingen voor de komende periode. Het concern behaalde over haar eerste kwartaal een omzet van 6,52 miljard dollar tegen 3,92 miljard tijdens dezelfde periode vorig jaar. De winst exclusief eenmalige lasten kwam uit op 1,36 miljard, waar een jaar eerder nog 814 miljoen dollar winst geboekt werd.

Cisco nam het afgelopen kwartaal voor 1,37 miljard dollar bedrijven over, waaronder NuSpeed, IPmobile, Komodo Technology en Netiverse. John Chambers, CEO van Cisco, sprak van een 'zeer sterk kwartaal'. Dat was volgens Chambers des te opvallender daar branchegenoten wel met de nodige problemen te kampen hadden, waarbij vooral te denken valt aan Lucent.[break]Toch is nog niet alles helemaal koek en ei, want ook Cisco is bang voor een negatieve uitwerking van economische vertragingingen. Bijkomstig zijn de orders van telecombedrijven tegenvallend:[/break]CEO Chambers gaf aan optimistischer dan ooit te zijn over de vooruitzichten van Cisco, maar toch was het niet allemaal rozengeur en maneschijn bij het netwerkconcern. Chambers zei tevens zich meer zorgen te maken dan drie maanden geleden over een vertraging van de economische groei.

Daarnaast heeft ook Cisco te lijden onder de malaise in de telecomsector. Het aantal orders van telecomaanbieders blijft ver achter bij het aantal orders dat grote ondernemingen en het midden- en kleinbedrijf bij Cisco plaatsen.

Het uitbesteden van bedrijfsprocessen bestaat al heel lang, maar zal volgens de Aberdeen Group in de toekomst een andere vorm gaan aannemen: netsourcing. In plaats van het 'ouderwetse' uitbestedingsproces komt bij netsourcing internet om de hoek kijken. Via het web zal het bedrijf namelijk toegang gaan krijgen tot de uitbestede dienst. Hierdoor is zelfs geen bedrijfsruimte meer nodig, want alles zal via internet gaan. Erg handig dus. Er zal veel geld bespaard kunnen worden met de nieuwe manier van werk:

Outsourcing is out; Netsourcing is in. Deze boodschap geeft de Aberdeen Group op een seminar over Application Service Provision.
ASP is in feite het uitbesteden van alle ICT-diensten aan specialisten. Hierbij speelt Internet een centrale rol. Consultant Joyce Becknell van de Aberdeen Group sprak zelfs van Netsourcing in plaats van het traditionele uitbesteden. Met het laatste wordt bedoeld de uitbesteding van bedrijfsprocessen naar een externe partner. (Inter)Netsouring betekent volgens Becknell: "Het gebruik van Internet en gerelateerde technologieën om toegang te krijgen tot de uitbestede dienst."

Goed voorbeeld hiervan is de Postbank, die 450.000 Girotel-rekeninghouders heeft. De verwerking ervan is volledig uitbesteed, waardoor de kosten van de gemiddeld 2 miljoen transcaties per dag zijn teruggelopen van 0,20 cent naar 0,05 cent per transactie.

Sharky Extreme heeft van VIA ook eindelijk een PM133 testbordje gekregen, met als gevolg dat er weer een 16 pagina's tellende preview van moest worden gebakken. Zoals bekend presteert de ingebouwde Savage4 video core van de chipset vrij aardig, zeker vergeleken met de i752 van de i815E chipset. Uit de applicatie bechmarks blijkt wederom dat VIA hier wat moet inleveren, al is dat volgens Sharky vrij gering. Als de prijzen van PM133 plankjes laag gehouden worden voorspelt de reviewer dat de i815E mag rekenen op een sterke concurrent:

The PM133 chipset parts are currently in the hands of manufacturers. We don't know when boards will ship, but we imagine shipping products will hit the streets soon. The i815 chipset has a new strong competitor!

Prices for PM133 boards are expected to be under $150. The actual feature set of a board will determine its price. We expect the board to be most popular among system builders. Also, if you are looking for an inexpensive second gaming system, you can save a bit of money by getting a PM133 with decent 3D performance instead of getting a motherboard with a separate video card. Our final verdict on value will have to wait for boards to ship.

VIA gained massive amounts of market share with their initial 133MHz chipset. They made even more headway with their K7 chipsets. Now they're continuing to move forward by leveraging S3's Savage4 video to get into the integrated chipset market. The PM133 is an excellent first effort that matches Intel's i815 chipset, tit for tat. When we get review boards, it will be interesting to see how the PM133 stacks up.

Hoewel we gisteren nog schreven dat de ICT-ontwikkeling van Nederland volgens het kabinet naar een hoger niveau gebracht moet worden, blijkt nu dat dit niveau toch al best hoog ligt. Naar aanleiding van de Internationale ICT-toets 2000 bleek dat ICT al aardig in Nederland is ingeburgerd en van goede kwaliteit is. Toch zal zoals wel eerder gezegd is het onderwijs op ICT gebied verbeterd moeten worden:

Volgens het ministerie van Economische Zaken komt ons land goed uit een vergelijking met de ons omringende landen. Een en ander vond plaats in het kader van de Internationale ICT-toets 2000. De onderzoekers stellen vast dat de penetratie van ICT in onze samenleving hoog is, op sommige punten zelfs zeer hoog. Er liggen moderne en kwalitatief goede netwerken, waarop bovendien veel burgers en bedrijven een aansluiting hebben.

Naar aanleiding van de bevindingen zal het ICT-beleid van de overheid verder worden geïntensiveerd. Daaronder vallen een verdere stimulering van ICT in het onderwijs en de snelle aanleg van een wijdverbreid breedbandig netwerk (glasvezel) ten behoeve van Internet.

C|NET schrijft in dit bericht dat een kleine groep dealers in Amerika de Pentium 4 al in de schappen heeft liggen. Officieel wordt de processor pas 20 november geïntroduceerd, maar Dallas Memory International heeft bijvoorbeeld de 1,5GHz P4 voor $1.150 en de 1,4GHz versie voor $990 al op voorraad liggen. Aangezien kopers in het begin weinig plezier zullen beleven aan hun chippie (moederborden zijn er nog niet) is de verkoop op het moment wat tegenvallend; er zijn er pas 5 verkocht :

A handful of computer dealers are already selling Intel's Pentium 4 processor, which is officially slated to debut Nov. 20. Dallas Memory International, for instance, is selling the 1.5-GHz Pentium 4 for $1,150 and the 1.4-GHz version of the chip for $990, not including shipping, said Alex Zhel, a company sales representative.

However, early purchasers won't get much of an early insight into the how the chip performs. Motherboards and chipsets, which connect the processor to hard drives and other PC components, won't be available for at least another week or so, dealers said.

"You can't do anything yet," Zhel said. "We've sold about five so far."

[...] Intel has said it will produce "hundreds of thousands" of Pentium 4 chips this year, which is not many in the grand scheme of things. The company will work to ensure that the chip constitutes more than half of all of the company's microprocessor shipments by early 2002.

Although the Pentium 4 is unlikely to be an easy chip to find for a while, those selling the chip now, surprisingly, said that the current supply isn't so bad.

Bij AnandTech is vandaag een review verschenen van de Iwill WO2-R, een Socket 370 moederbord gebaseerd op Intel's i815E chipset. Het bord heeft een 5/0/1/1 (PCI/ISA/CNR/AGP) layout en beschikt over een on-board ATA-100 RAID controller van AMI, geschikt voor RAID 0,1 en 0+1. Aan overclockers is ook gedacht: de bussnelheid kan van 66MHz tot 200MHz worden ingesteld in stappen van 1MHz, een feature die Iwill 'Microstepping' noemt. Helaas kan het I/O en core voltage alleen worden verhoogd met 5 of 10 procent. Alles bij elkaar genomen kon er worden geconcludeerd dat de WO2-R, mede dankzij goede stabiliteit en performance, een prima plankie is:

Iwill nicely integrates an ATA100 IDE RAID controller and the i815E chipset with the WO2-R. There are a total of 4 Ultra ATA 100 channels supporting up to 8 IDE devices. Whether you need the speed of IDE RAID or have more than 4 IDE devices, you will like the board. The board has decent performance and stability.

As of the publication of this review, this is the only i815E board with IDE RAID support, but more are just over the horizon. It will be interesting to see how different companies integrate the RAID controller with the motherboard, as well as how they perform. Ace's Hardware heeft een update geplaatst over de nieuwste versie van Intel's processorroadmap. De Pentium 4 zal zoals verwacht eind deze maand verschijnen, maar zal nog niet interessant zijn voor de meeste gebruikers. Pas in het derde kwartaal van 2001 zal i815E in de mainstream worden vervangen door de Brookdale chipset, waardoor de Pentium 4 interessant wordt voor de meeste thuisgebruikers. Verder melden ze dat de Itanium processor nog dit jaar een "pilot launch" krijgt, en zijn opvolger McKinley ongeveer een jaar later hetzelfde zal ondergaan. De eerste laptops met 1GHz Pentium III processors kunnen we in April 2001 verwachten. Verder hebben ze een tabel met de prijzen die we begin volgend jaar kunnen verwachten:

Foster carries a $200 premium over the standard Pentium 4. Considering the very large premium the 2 MB Xeon carries over the Pentium III, it is possible this version of Foster has relatively few differences/improvements compared to the desktop Pentium 4. As I mentioned earlier, Intel is apparently distinguishing between "dual-processor" and "multi-processor" systems, and these Fosters are indicated as "dual-processor" versions. While we don't know exactly what this means, it would seem that some variants are limited in terms of scalability, and so these would likely be the low-end Foster chips.

Sander Sassen van HardwareCentral heeft de tijd genomen om de SuperMicro SC-830W serverkast aan een grondig onderzoek te onderwerpen. Dit nogal logge geval beschikt over vier 90mm en twee 120mm fans om de inhoud lekker koel te houden. Ook worden twee hot-swappable 300W voedingen meegeleverd, zodat het kastje nooit zonder spanning hoeft komen te zitten. Met negen 5.25" bays moet er ook voldoende ruimte voor uitbreiding zijn. De kast doet zijn werk goed en blijkt, zoals we van SuperMicro gewend zijn, ook uit kwaliteitsmateriaal te bestaan. Het geheel voelt zeer degelijk aan en wordt geleverd met een uitgebreide gereedschapsset een een voorraad schroefjes. De reviewer is dan ook zeer tevreden over deze kast:

We’ve had the SC-830W in our testing labs for over two months, running different server configurations, up to a dual 1GHz Pentium III Xeon with four Ultra160 SCSI disks in RAID5, and it hasn’t failed on us once, even when removing and re-installing the power supplies under full load. On top of that it proved to be very service-friendly; swapping out a motherboard or a CDROM is a matter of minutes. Both the side and top panel are detachable, so you don’t have to take the entire case apart to replace or upgrade a specific component and time is of the essence.

Overall we were impressed by the quality of build and the ease of use of the SuperMicro SC-830W. Its not the cheapest server case, but surely is worth every penny. The attention to detail, the ease with which you can upgrade or replace components and the excellent layout make it a pleasure to work with. And trust us, we’ve had our fair share of cuts, bruises and other mishaps from cases that weren’t well engineered. For those in need of a good server case or looking for a reliable and high quality replacement we’d opt for the SuperMicro SC-830W; it is highly recommended.

Jasper van VIA Hardware.com heeft een review geschreven over het AK74-EC mobo van fabrikant DFI (dus niet de AK47 ). Het plankje beschikt over een KT133 chipset, 3x DIMM, 1x ISA, 5x PCI, 1x AGP en 1x AMR. Het enige verschil met de vorige versie, de DFI AK74-SC, is dat de southbridge een upgrade ondergaan heeft, waardoor nu ook ATA100 ondersteund wordt. Net als de eerdere versies ondersteunt dit AK74 bordje ook geen voltage tweaking en multiplieropties. De FSB is wel instelbaar in stappen van 1MHz van 100 tot 133MHz. Ondanks de stabiliteit is deze plank dus geen optie voor ons Tweakers. Het prijskaartje is gelukkig niet onaantrekkelijk:

The VIA 686b southbridge will certainly be welcomed into the market. ATA100 hard drives are readily available from IBM and Maxtor and for now is the current standard. As hard drives become faster, they will make the ATA100 standard that more important, as performance gains increase. Although ATA100 is a very nice option on a chipset, I don't read about too many BX users that are limited by the BX's ATA33. Nevertheless ATA100 is the new standard and now has full support from VIA and Intel. Another advantage of the VIA 686b southbridge is it should add little or no cost to current motherboard prices, since it simply can replace the 686a. This is a change from the Asus A7V and Abit KT7-RAID, which both use ATA100 integrated cards, and generally cost $30-$40 more then other KT133 motherboards.

The DFI AK74-EC performed flawlessly in all of my testing. Again, like the AK74-SC, I was very impressed with its stability. The addition of the VIA 686b southbridge should make this board and excellent setup for those not overclocking and are looking for a rock-solid platform for an AMD Duron/Athlon. The price also comes nicely at a pricetag of $115 via pricewatch. The downside of course is the lack of CPU multiplier adjustments and sub-A7V memory performance.

De mensen van Gamers Depot zijn zo vriendelijk geweest een review te maken van de 3dfx VoodooTV 200, 3dfx's poging om ook eens andere markten dan die van 3D-kaarten te betreden. Deze PCI-kaart kan TV- en FM-signalen ontvangen. De videokwaliteit was redelijk, maar zoals we ook al in andere reviews gezien hebben wordt er weer eens stevig geklaagd over de meegeleverde software:

The one thing that struck me about the way the software and the card operated together was how slow it was to react. Pressing any button on the “virtual remote” caused the video to freeze for a moment, like the card had to think about it. For example, if I wanted to capture a still-frame off of a show, pressing the capture button would cause the video to freeze, then start again, and then capture a frame a half-second to a full second AFTER the moment I wanted to capture. Sometimes I ended up capturing a frame of video that wasn’t remotely what I wanted because the show had cut to another camera not pointed at the original subject by the time the VOODOOtv system actually got around to capturing a frame.

De reviewer twijfelt ook over de nuttigheid van TV kijken op de PC terwijl de meeste mensen al een TV in huis hebben, maar dat is een heel andere discussie. Over het algemeen is het geen slechte entree van 3dfx in deze markt, maar er zijn nog wat dingen die verbeterd kunnen worden. Dat geldt vooral op het gebied van de software, maar ook de beeldkwaliteit is nog niet optimaal.
