Intel is finally bowing to industry pressure and moving full speed towards SDR and DDR Pentium 4 chipsets in the mainstream. Brookdale, Intel's SDR and DDR chipset for the Pentium 4, will be moving onto the corporate desktop in Q3 2001, when it will start to replace i815E systems. There will be two versions of the Brookdale chipset, an SDR and a DDR version. The SDR version should hit the market in September of 2001. The DDR version should hit in January of 2002, though there is a chance that it will arrive as early as October of 2001.
Intel is pushing Brookdale with their partners, likely due to fears that the Pentium 4's current reliance on RDRAM will limit its success. In the end, the Pentium 4 will support all memory types. For quite a while though, RDRAM will be the only choice.
Beyond Brookdale and the i850 chipset, we do not know what form of memory Intel will use for their high-end Pentium 4 chipset. Dual RDRAM channels will provide more bandwidth than DDR for quite a while, but if DDR speed moves up fast enough, we could see RDRAM all but disappear from the consumer computer main-memory market after the i850 chipset, all in spite of RDRAM's awesome potential.
