3D Spotlight heeft een review gebrouwd van de Hedgehog 238-M heatsink/fan combo. De Hedgehog heatsinks zijn volledig gemaakt van koper. Koper geleidt in principe veel beter de warmte dan aluminium, maar heeft als nadeel dat de warmte minder goed wordt overgedragen aan de lucht. Vandaar dat een 60x60x25mm 5400-RPM fan is meegeleverd om het geheel een beetje soepel te laten verlopen.

Nadat het geval is gemonteerd op een P3-650 blijkt dat het helemaal niet slecht presteert; de FSB draait zonder moeite en zeer stabiel op 157MHz, wat dus zorgt voor een processorsnelheid van 1021MHz. Ook de vergelijking met de GlobalWin FKP-32 valt in het voordeel van de Hedgehog uit; op 1021MHz met een Vcore van 1.8V was de Hedgehog 3 graden koeler.

En net als je denkt dat er alleen maar positieve dingen te melden zijn over deze koeler, valt er toch nog een negatief puntje te bespeuren: met een prijs van $50 is het niet bepaald een koopje.

Volgens het kabinet moet de ontwikkeling van de ICT in ons landje naar een hogere versnelling. Als we dat niet doen zullen we over een paar jaar achter lopen op andere landen. Deze conclusie trekt het kabinet uit de notitie 'De digitale delta: e-Europe voorbij'.

Silicon Graphics heeft op de jaarlijkse supercomputerbeurs SC2000 een demonstratie gegeven van SGITM software draaiende op een cluster van acht nodes met elk twee Itanium processors. Dit aangepaste TurboLinux pakket was in staat de kracht van de zestien 64-bits processors te combineren en ze gezamelijk te laten werken aan een aantal zeer zware programma's, bijvoorbeeld een Quantum Chromodynamics pakket. Voor Intel is dit soort vooruitgang zeer gunstig, het aanwezig zijn van goede operating systemen, compilers en software voor IA-64 is nodig om de nieuwe architectuur succesvol te maken:

"SGI has developed strong programs with ISVs and early adopters of Itanium processor platforms. C|Net's News.com heeft een artikel geplaatst over de markt voor rack-mountable servers, die een sterk groei beleeft nu ISP's hun datacenters in rap tempo met internet servers volgeparkeerd zien worden. De hoge rackspace-kosten verhogen de noodzaak om zoveel mogelijk capaciteit in een zo klein mogelijke ruimte te verpakken. Daardoor is er een groeiende interesse voor superlage 1U pizzadozen, zoals de machientjes die vandaag door Einux, Network Engines en API Networks werden aangekondigd.

Einux introduceert deze maand op de Comdex de E.Server 1/4U server arrays. Deze 4-in-1U racks bieden ruimte aan vier losse computers. De beschikbare configuraties variëren op dit moment van vier 533MHz Celerons tot vier 850MHz PIII's. Omdat de warmteontwikkeling in een dergelijke kleine behuizing een aanslag kan vormen op de betrouwbaarheid, wordt het Einux rack koud gehouden met 20 ventilators.

De bijdrage van API Networks (voorheen Alpha Processor Inc.) bestaat uit het dual Alpha CS20 rack. De CS20 kan geleverd worden met twee 667 of 833MHz 21264's met 4MB DDR L2 cache. Op het moederplankje bevinden zich 8 DIMM slots die middels een 256-bit, 83MHz bus aan de northbridge zijn geknoopt. Verder zijn er een onboard Ultra160 en ethernet controller van Symbios en Intel. Voor simpele web- en fileserver toepassingen zijn deze machientjes wat aan de prijzige kant, maar voor wetenschappelijke toepassingen waarbij het aankomt op pure floating point number crushing zijn de Alpha's onverslaanbaar. IBM ziet wel wat in Linux, zo bleek ook al wel eerder. ZDNet meldt dat IBM ditmaal een mega-deal heeft gesloten met 'Lawson', dat is een Japanse warenhuis keten. IBM gaat 15.000 xSeries servers met (zo gaan de geruchten) Redhat Linux neerzetten bij de keten, dat houdt in dat er op iedere vestiging 2 Linux servers worden geplaatst. IBM denkt dat dit de grootste deal in de Linux historie is. Lawson wil de servers gaan gebruiken als terminalserver voor internet toepassingen:

IBM said the deal calls for nearly every one of Lawson's 7,600 stores to install two Linux servers, which will feed Windows-based "Loppi" self-service multimedia terminals. These terminals will allow customers to perform a variety of tasks, including downloading music and video clips, as well as purchasing airline and concert tickets online.

Under terms of the deal, IBM also will provide Lawson with deployment and application-migration services. The parties declined to disclose the value of the deal.

"Lawson needs almost 7-by-24-level reliability," Callies said. "They want to do backup in a way that allows them to switch between servers cost-effectively and efficiently."

WinInformant stelt ons op de hoogte van een vreemde zaak. Het defragmenteer programma dat met Windows 2000 wordt meegeleverd moet namelijk van de Duitse overheid verdwijnen, aangezien de directeur van de fabrikant (Executive Software) een religie heeft die de hen niet aanstaat. Craig Jensen is aanhanger van de "Church of Scientology", een soort sekte die erin gelooft de lichamelijke en geestelijke gezondheid met behulp van wetenschappelijke middelen te kunnen verbeteren. Volgens Duitsland zou het goed kunnen dat Diskeeper, waarvan het defragmenteer programma van Windows 2000 is afgeleid, een beveiligingsprobleem heeft:

FiringSquad heeft een een review gemaakt van het FIC AZ11E moederbord. De E in het typenummer staat voor "Enhanced", en dat betekent dat deze versie in tegenstelling tot de normale AZ11 is uitgerust met multiplier dipswitches. Een ander voordeel van de E versie is de VIA 686B southbridge, die onder andere voor ATA-100 support zorgt. Het moederbord is verder uitgerust NOVUS, een bundel software en features om je BIOS mee te beschermen en aan te passen, zo kun je bijvoorbeeld je logo veranderen of makkelijk tussen twee verschillende configuraties switchen.

De FIC AZ11E wordt vergeleken met de KT7-Raid, en blijkt in veel gevallen sneller te zijn. Een paar kleine nadelen waren er wel, waaronder het ontbreken van een zesde PCI slot, maar dat neemt niet weg dat de FIC AZ11E een geduchte concurrent van de A7V en de KT7 is. Alleen een tweede IDE (RAID) controller ontbreekt eigenlijk nog:

I know the hardware is old crap but it was free it was all found in rubbish piles that people were throwing out. The tin cans (2nd used for the lid as it sits over the hole) were found at the rear of a panel beaters. The comp parts from an old parcel cubing system at work. Seagate heeft vandaag hun vijfde generatie 10.000rpm Cheetah SCSI drives aangekondigd. De nieuwe Cheetah 36XL en 73LP harddisks beschikken over een cache van 4 of 16MB en worden geleverd met een Ultra160 SCSI of 2Gb/s Fibre Channel interface. De Cheetah 36XL kan geleverd worden in versies met een capaciteit van 9,2GB, 18,4GB of 36,7GB. De seektime bedraagt 5,6ms en de maximale sequentiële transfer rate is volgens de press release 46,1MB/s.

Henry Kuo van AnandTech heeft een review geschreven over de Soyo SY-K7VTA plank. Deze plank is gebaseerd op de KT133 chipset van chipset van VIA, en is in het bezit een 1x ISA, 5x PCI, 1x AGP en 3x DIMM layout. Goed nieuws voor de Abit en Asus haters onder ons (voor zover die bestaan...) is dat deze plank met multiplier dipswitches is uitgerust, en dus een waardig alternatief kan vormen. Helemaal perfect is het plankje niet aangezien de power supply connector wat ongelukkig is geplaatst en ook de hoeveelheid beschikbare FSB snelheden zijn wat minimaal. Gelukkig zijn dit geen ernstige zaken en hoef je, je niet te schamen om deze plank te bezitten :

Het Britse filiaal van de Business Software Alliance is een stapje verder gegaan in het stimuleren van matennaaierij en geeft sinds kort een beloning van £10.000 (bijna 37.000 piek) voor tips die leiden tot het opsporen van bedrijven die gebruik maken van illegale software. De BSA probeert met deze vette pot geld werknemers ertoe te bewegen om hun overtredende werkgever te verlinken. Volgens de berekeningen van de BSA maakt de software industrie jaarlijks een verlies van 768 miljoen euro door het gebruik van illegaal gekopieerde software in de UK. De schuld voor dit verschrikkelijke verlies ligt volgens de BSA vooral bij bedrijfsleiders die het beheer en management van software een weinig boeiende prioriteit geven:

De BSA legt de schuld voor de situatie in het Verenigd Koninkrijk aan de voeten van bedrijfsleiders. "Het probleem begint wanneer ondernemingen softwaremanagement en -beheer een heel lage prioriteit geeft", stelt Newton. De Britse wetgever is niet mals voor overtreders. De leiding van een bedrijf loopt kans op zeer grote boetes en gevangenisstraffen tot twee jaar als er illegale software wordt ontdekt.

Het initiatief van de BSA is bedacht, nadat uit een enquête bleek dat een geldbeloning de meest effectieve methode was om werknemers te overtuigen hun bazen te verklikken. Een speciale telefoonlijn is beschikbaar waarop mensen anoniem tips kunnen doorbellen.

Johan De Gelas van Ace's Hardware heeft een interessant artikeltje geschreven waarin het de DVD playback performance van diverse processor, geheugen en videokaart-configuraties vergelijkt. De processor/memory benchmarks laten duidelijk zien dat vooral bij snelle processors het verschil tussen PC100 en PC133 SDRAM merkbare gevolgen heeft voor de processor belasting. Het verschil in processor belasting tussen een Duron 600/133 en Duron 600/100 is nog beperkt tot een enkel procentje, maar op 750MHz loopt het verschil bij DVD streams met een hoge bitrate op tot 10%. Bij de DVD encoding test stijgt de framerate vrijwel lineair met de kloksnelheid van de processor. Opmerkelijk is dat er nauwelijks een verschil is tussen de prestaties van de Duron en Thunderbird. De grote hoeveelheden data die bij het encoden worden verwerkt zetten de L1 en L2 cache blijkbaar buiten spel.

Dankzij support voor HMC (Hardware Motion Compensation) en iDCT (Inverse Discrete Cosine Transformation) geeft de ATi Radeon van alle geteste videokaarten veruit de laagste processor belasting. De Voodoo5 geeft van de nieuwste generatie videokaarten de minste CPU ontlasting :

You don't need a killer CPU to decode DVDs, especially if your video card handles Hardware Motion Compensation. Make sure DMA is enabled and even a humble K6-2 400 or PII-350 will produce smooth DVD play. If you have a non-HMC capable video card, do not despair. A Celeron 433 or better will do nicely, unless you plan to perform a lot of background tasks during playback. If this is a case, you will be better suited with a Duron or Pentium III. If you want to encode videos to MPEG2, the message is clear: the higher the clock speed and the stronger the FPU, the better. Encoding a simple one-hour movie will take a bit more than 60 minutes on a Duron 900, but more than 3 hours on a K6-2 500. MPEG2-encoding is one of those applications where more CPU power really pays off.

Webwereld meldt dat VNU een 'promotie actie' is gestart waarmee Startpagina-dochters de mogelijkheid worden geboden om voor drie keywords een toppositie te krijgen bij de zoekresultaten van Ilse. Op deze manier worden de startpagina's voorgetrokken boven normale sites. De plannen van VNU zijn naar buiten gelekt uit een interne mailing die werd verstuurd aan de beheerders van de dochterpagina's. VNU doet hiermee een eerste poging tot uitbuiting van de gecombineerde mogelijkheden van Startpagina en Ilse:

Durk Jan de Bruin van Startpagina spreekt liever niet van 'voortrekken', maar van 'een actie puur ter promotie'. De Bruin weet nog niet hoe de gepromote links er precies uit komen te zien. "Op de een of andere manier zal duidelijk worden dat het om een door Ilse gepromote link gaat", aldus De Bruin.

Het project bevindt zich nu nog in de eerste ronde. Startpagina-dochters kunnen de komende tijd hun trefwoorden opgeven. Uiteraard zal er overlap zijn in de opgegeven woorden. Het Startpagina-team zal daarna bekijken welke term het beste past bij welke pagina.

De Stichting Brein (Bescherming Rechten Entertainment Industrie Nederland) dreigt een rechtzaak te beginnen tegen Napster.nl, als de MP3-fansite niet stopt met deeplinken naar illegale muziek. Brein heeft de site in een brief gesommeerd de links binnen 48 uur te verwijderen. Een aanleiding voor deze brief was een link naar een site waar de nieuwe cd van Madonna neer te halen is. De eigenaar van napster.nl, Johan van Vliet, weigert de links naar illegale muziek te verwijderen. Hij verwijst naar de uitspraak in de zaak rond Kranten.com. De rechter vond deeplinken toen ook niet illegaal. Dat het in dit geval geen krantenartikelen zijn, maar sites met illegale content maakt volgens Van Vliet niets uit:

Pieter Haringsma, die namens de Stichting Brein de brief verstuurde, vraagt zich af hoe Van Vliet tot die gedachte komt. "De vergelijking met Kranten.com gaat in dit geval absoluut niet op. Er is juist veel, internationale, jurisprudentie waaruit duidelijk wordt dat ook het doorlinken naar illegaal materiaal ongeoorloofd is", aldus Haringsma.

[...] Stichting Brein heeft in de van afgelopen vrijdag daterende brief Napster.nl 48 uur de tijd gegeven de illegale links te verwijderen. Die 48 uur is volgens Haringsma nog niet voorbij, omdat het weekend niet meegeteld wordt.

Indien Napster.nl blijft volharden in haar weigering de links te verwijderen, zal de Stichting Brein zich beraden op verdere juridische stappen. Van Vliet is daar niet bang voor: "Laat de rechter dan maar uitmaken of wat wij doen legaal is."

X-Bit Labs heeft een artikel gepost waarin de performance en stabiliteit van de VIA Apollo Pro133A en good old 440BX chipsets bij gebruik in een dual PIII-650 config worden vergeleken. Als voorbeeld van een dual processor Apollo Pro133A plank werd de Gigabyte GA-6VXDC7 genomen. Het dual 440BX kamp werd vertegenwoordig door de SuperMicro P6DBE.

Beide systemen bleken qua prestaties aan elkaar gewaagd te zijn; soms was het Gigabyte plankje sneller en soms het SuperMicro bord. In alle gevallen was het verschil tussen de twee mobo's erg klein. Ook wat betreft stabiliteit kon het Gigabyte bord zich prima meten met het beproefde P6DBE bord van SuperMicro. De stabiliteitsproblemen die bij de eerste generatie dual Apollo Pro133A mobo's aan het licht kwamen, konden absoluut niet terug gevonden worden bij de Gigabyte GA-6VXDC7:

Every time we come to speak about multi-processor systems, the stability issue rises. That's why we tested the stability and reliability of VIA Apollo Pro133A based dual-processor system very carefully. And we have to admit that we were satisfied with the results achieved.

Although the first dual-processor systems based on VIA Apollo Pro133A were not the most stable and reliable solutions, now the situation has definitely changed for the better. Probably, the chipset owes a part of this success to AMIBIOS, which is used on Gigabyte GA-6VXDC7 mainboard instead of the ordinary Award BIOS.

Nevertheless, we can't deny the fact that the system based on Gigabyte GA-6VXDC7 proved as stable as the one based on Supermicro SUPER P6DBE (i440BX), which is certainly a great achievement for VIA. That's why from now on you can trust VIA Apollo Pro133A based SMP-systems.

Dean van Planet Savage heeft een roundup gemaakt tussen drie GeForce2 MX kaarten: de LeadTek WinFast GeForce2 MX, de GainWard GeForce2 MX en de Sparkle GeForce2 MX. Volgens Dean zal de GeForce2 MX niet snel uitsterven met het uitkomen van nieuwe generatie kaarten, mede door de TwinView feature:

There isn't much to say about the GeForce2 MX. It is dirt-cheap but it does not suck in terms of performance. Value is often mistaken for cheapness. Value means great performance at a justifiable price. Some products may be cheap but perform like crap and some products perform great but cost a fortune.

[...] As a final recommendation, I recommend overclocking the memory to at least 200MHz since it would definitely give a big boost in performance. Don't bother supercooling the core since the main problem of the MX is memory bandwidth. It is already memory bandwidth limited at its default speed so don't add more limitation by overclocking the core much much more. The best improvement of the MX would be in the increasing of the memory bandwidth.

To sum it all up, the MX is cheap, fast and useful.

Seagate heeft aangekondigd dat het is begonnen met de levering van portable TapeStor Travan USB tapestreamers. Real World Technologies heeft een artikel gepost waarin ze de performance van de geïntegreerde video graphics in de Intel 815E en VIA ProSavage PM133 chipsets vergelijken. Deze twee chipsets maken respectievelijk gebruik van een ingebakken Intel 752 en S3 Savage4 core. De conclusie van RWT is grotendeels gelijk aan de conclusie uit de VIA PL133 (=PM133, maar dan zonder mogelijkheid voor extern AGP slot) review van VIA Hardware. De PM133 heeft een betere 3D performance dan de i815E, maar de i815E fietst harder in de applicatie benchmarks. De PM133 heeft wel als voordeel dat deze het geheugen onafhankelijk van de busspeed op 133MHz kan klokken. De extra geheugen bandbreedte die hierdoor verkregen kan worden, heeft vooral zaligmakende gevolgen voor de 3D performance:

The VIA PM133 chipset allows you to run the memory at FSB speed or FSB + or – 33MHz, the Intel 815E allows only 100MHz memory speed if using a 66 or 100MHz FSB, but at 133MHz FSB you can set to either 100 or 133MHz memory speed.

Although the performance is quite close, the 3D performance of the VIA is slightly better... but FSB speed makes a big difference, along with resolution on the spread between the two chipsets (faster FSB and lower resolution being better for the VIA). What I did find out is that the i815E puts very little load on the CPU when using the integrated video and that the display resolution makes no difference with it. But, the VIA PM133 integrated video does put a significant load on the CPU that also varies with resolution.

Pantagruel schrijft dat Akiba's PC Watch aka het wazige plaatjes paradijs een paar plaatjes online heeft staan van een wazige koeler. Volgens Pantagruel ziet dit eruit als een borg cube, iets waar ik het wel mee eens ben indien je er een groen lampje inplakt .

MSXBox.com meldt dat Seagate door Microsoft is uitverkozen tot premiere XBox harddisk supplier. Aanvankelijk werd gedacht dat Western Digital deze positie zou vervullen, maar zij zijn slechts tweede leverancier. De keuze voor Seagate is op zich niet vreemd aangezien Seagate al jaren de grootste producent van harddisks is. Het contract dat Microsoft heeft gesloten loopt van juni 2001 tot midden 2003 en heeft betrekking op de levering van 5400rpm drives uit de Seagate U-serie. Deze schijfjes zijn erg stil en zijn bovendien voorzien van Seagate's '3D Defense System', wat de schokbestendigheid moet vergroten indien pissige console gamertjes met hun Xbox gaan smijten:

Western Digital is another Hard Drive supplier for the Xbox. Because of the large quantity of consoles expected to be manufactured, several Hard Drive providers are required to meet the demand.

De heren van Hot HardWare hebben een review gemaakt over de Abit SA6R (de opvolger van de SE6). Men heeft een P3-933 gebruikt om verschillende tests te doen, maar ook een 1Ghz-er waarmee ze hebben overgeklokt. De resultaten zijn hieronder kort samengevat:

The SA6R allowed us to hit the 1.1G mark with a 147MHz. Front Side Bus speed. We ran the processor at a rather high voltage of 1.95V but things were stable for hours of testing. We didn't really "shake and bake" things too hard but regardless we completed our testing without a crash, so we're claiming success. In short, the SA6R is designed with the "Over-Clockers" in mind and delivers on every level of that criteria.

Bij Hard|OCP hebben ze een vergelijking online staan tussen de Soyo SY-7VMA (PM133) en Transcend's TS-ASL3 (i815) moederbord. Zoals bekend hebben beide chipsets een ingebakken videokaart, waarbij de Savage4 van de PM133 heel wat beter presteert dan de i752 van Intel's i815. Echter, als er een GeForce2 AGP kaart wordt gebruikt blijft de PM133 juist weer ietsie achter. Als we ze vergelijken op overklokbaarheid blijkt de Transcend redelijk goed mee te komen; hij ondersteund FSB tweaks vanuit het BIOS (tot 166MHz in stapjes van 1MHz) en voltage tweaking, iets waar de Soyo overigens ook over beschikt. Die laatste moet het echter doen met 14 FSB opties. Anyway, twee aardige plankjes die je niet snel in een tweaksysteem zult vinden maar wel prima volstaan in bv een tweede office doos. Jammer overigens dat de Transcend plank het loodje heeft gelegd tijdens het schrijven van de review :'(:

I had convinced myself that I wasn't going to pull any punches with these motherboards by declaring one a definitive winner and the other a lowly mud suckin' loser. Unfortunately, I don't really feel it's fair to do that. I've got a few excuses... err... I mean reasons behind this. First and foremost, one of the contestants is dead. Generally speaking, you can't have a competition if one of the contestants is dead. Unless it's some sort of race to see who dies first, in which case, the Transcend easily wins that one. But I suppose I gotta say something, so here it goes. I wouldn't exactly recommend either one of these motherboards to anyone who had any intentions of serious overclocking. Neither of them will cut it in that respect. To be honest, I think most people who are looking at these motherboards are probably going to base their decision on the capabilities. The Soyo has an ISA slot, and the Transcend, a CMR. So if you need one or the other, your decision is made up for you. The Soyo can handle 1.5GB of SDRAM in any manner you see fit, as long as it can fit in the 3 SDRAM slots. The Transcend is limited to only 512MB, but how you get to that number is very critical. If you have 3 sticks of 64MB PC133 SDRAM, you might not want the Transcend board.

Anyways, either one of these motherboards will easily fit the bill, if all you're looking for is a do-it-all style motherboard for a general system. If you are building a rig to leave over at Aunt Sally's house so she can get some email, or surf that goat pr0n when you are gone, both boards fit the bill. They leave you a pretty inexpensive alternative and no sound or Vid card to purchase in order to complete the system.

De mannen van JSI Hardware hebben een review geschreven over de nieuwste KT133 plank van Soltek, de SL75KV2-X. De SL75KV2-X is de opvolger van de SL75KV en heeft evenals zijn voorganger een 1x ISA, 5x PCI, 1x AGP en 3x DIMM layout. Nieuw is de VIA 686B southbridge die voor ATA-100 ondersteuning zorgt en een blokje dipswitches om de multiplier in te kunnen stellen. Met deze features staat de SL75KV-2 op gelijke voet met de Asus A7V, en hoort dus bij de interessantere plankjes :

There are 2 main improvements that stand out the first is the inclusion of dipswitches to allow for multiplier adjustment of the cpu and secondly the board is using the new 686B Southbridge chip (where as the SL75KV uses the 686A Southbridge) to provide Udma 100 support.

The board still uses the same KT133 chipset the SL75KV uses and still incorporates such features as a AGP pro slot, however Soltek have still only fitted the board out with 1 Serial port however again they have bundled a spare serial port which you can connect up to the motherboard should you need 2 ports.

[...] Overall I have to say I am very pleased with this board, it has everything you would need in a motherboard. If you looking for a new board to Overclock your new socket A chip then I would highly recommend this board, even if your not looking to Overclock I would recommend this board.

Mazda North America heeft in een press release bekend gemaakt dat het als eerste autofabrikant begint met de levering van auto's die af-fabriek zijn voorzien van een MP3 audio systeem. Mazda maakt hiervoor gebruik van de in-dash eXcelon Z919 receiver/player van Kenwood, waarmee naast MP3's ook audio CD's afgedraaid kunnen worden. Tevens ontvangt het systeem AM en FM radio. De MP3's worden ingelezen vanaf CD en zelfgebakken CD-R media:

Mazda North American Operations today treated guests and media to the world debut of the world's first factory- installed in-dash MP3-capable audio system at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas. The system capitalizes on the rapid growth of MP3 music files for personal use and makes it possible for consumers to play up to 10 hours of MP3 recordings on a single disc.

``The market has demanded CD players and now every Mazda vehicle is equipped with an AM/FM/CD audio system,'' said Steve Odell, vice president of marketing and sales for MNAO. ``MP3 is the fastest-growing music format and our younger, tech-savvy consumers are demanding state-of-the-art audio systems and we are meeting that demand as well.''

The system, a joint effort between Mazda and Kenwood, includes a powered sub-woofer, premium speakers and Kenwood's new eXcelon Z919 MP3/CD/AM/FM in- dash receiver/player. Kenwood becomes the first mobile electronics manufacturer to have an in-dash MP3 player installed as an original equipment audio system.

The Kenwood Z919 plays conventional music CDs as well CD-R discs with MP3 music files. MP3 compression allows music to be downloaded quickly over the Internet and stored in small, manageable files. This allows up to 10 hours of music to be recorded onto a CD-R disc that would only contain about an hour of music recorded in a standard CD format.

In addition to the Kenwood Z919, the Protege MPS will include two 6x9 three-way speakers (KFCX-696) for the car's rear deck, a 5x7 two-way speaker (KFCX-576C) for each of the front doors, and a 100-watt, trunk-mounted 10-inch powered subwoofer (KSC-WA100).

X-Bit Labs meldt dat SUMA de Platinum GeForce2 GTS Pro heeft aangekondigd. Dit wat warrig genaamde videokaartje is gebaseerd op de GeForce2 Pro en beschikt over 64MB 200MHz DDR SDRAM. In tegenstelling tot de meeste fabrikanten heeft SUMA niet gekozen voor 5ns EliteMT chips, maar voor 5ns DDR chips van Hyundai. Deze Hyundai chippies schijnen zich beter te laten overklokken dan de chips van EliteMT. Alsof we hier nog niet blij genoeg mee mogen zijn, heeft SUMA bovendien besloten om de geheugenchips met 'pin-heatsinks' te beplakken...

Instead of the ordinary 5ns memory chips from EliteMT, not subject to good overclocking, SUMA equipped its new product with better Hyundai 5ns chips. Moreover, the memory chips on SUMA PLATINUM GeForce2 GTS Pro are covered with pin-heatsinks providing better heat dissipation than the conventional heatsinks typical of all GeForce2 Ultra cards. And of course we should also mention a very high-quality massive cooler on the graphics chip. Due to the combination of these indisputably positive features, SUMA PLATINUM GeForce2 GTS Pro can become one of the most overclockable GeForce2 Pro based cards.

Dean Kent van Real World Technologies meldt dat Intel de lancering van i850 Tehama mobo's volgens een mobofabrikant heeft beperkt tot 4 fabrikanten. De reden hiervoor is vermoedelijk een beperkte beschikbaarheid van i850 chipsets. Welke 4 fabrikanten dit zijn is niet helemaal duidelijk, maar waarschijnlijk gaat 't om Asus, MSI, Gigabyte en AOpen. Van de eerste drie is in ieder geval al bekend dat zij i850 mobo's in ontwikkeling hebben:

According to one motherboard manufacturer we spoke with recently, Intel has done something that AMD was criticized for last year - they have chosen only 4 motherboard manufacturers to be part of their initial rollout of the i850 chipset for Pentium 4. There was no mention of which four that would be, however common sense would indicate it would be the four who are direct with Intel, which I believe are ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte and AOpen. [break]Verder zijn er indicaties dat een aantal fabrikanten die niet deelnemen aan de i850 introductie ook op lange termijn geen plannen hebben om een i850 plank op de markt te brengen. In plaats van de i850 wachten zij op de VIA Apollo PX266 chipset, die gebruik maakt van DDR SDRAM:[/break] This seems to be yet another indication that despite the possibility that DDR could carry higher royalties than DRDRAM, the current mentality is that DDR will be the dominant main memory used in PCs for the next few years. In fact, several manufacturers have indicated that they believe single data rate SDRAM will be essentially dead in the PC market by the end of 2001.

Mobofabrikant Epox heeft voor de komende twee maanden vier nieuwe releases aangekondigd - naast de D3SA, 3VHA, EP-8KTA3 en EP-8K7A plankjes waarvan reeds eerder de specs bekend werden. De nieuwe borden zijn de EP-3VCA6 (VIA Apollo Pro133A), 3LHA (ALi MAGiK1 Socket A / DDR), 8LKA (ALi Alladin Pro5 Socket 370 / DDR) en 8KHA (VIA Apollo KT266).

De D3SA is het eerste dual processor bord dat is gebaseerd op de i815E chipset. De plank heeft 5 PCI slots, 3 DIMM slots en een CNR slotje. Aan het Socket 370 front werd tevens de 3VHA aangekondigd. Deze plank beschikt over de nieuwe Apollo Pro266 chipset van VIA. 6 PCI slots en 3 184-pins DDR slots maken het plankje prima geschikt voor power users. De 8KHA en 3VHA maken gebruik van de nieuwe VIA 8233 southbridge, die via een 266MB/s snelle V-Link aan de northbridge wordt geknoopt.

De eerder aangekondigde Socket A borden beschikken beide over 6 PCI slots. Hier worden door de EP-8KTA3, gebaseerd op de VIA KT133A chipset, 4 DIMM slots en een ISA slot aan toegevoegd. De EP-8K7A is gebaseerd op de AMD 760 chipset en heeft 2 184-pins DIMM slots. Alle nieuwe Epox borden zien voorzien van debug LED die tijdens de power-on self test een diagnose geeft van de gezondheid van het systeem.
