Tom heeft een nieuwe blurb gepost waarin hij de redenen voor zijn aversie tegen Rambus Inc. en Rambus DRAM verklaart. Naast de technische problemen van Rambus geheugens blijkt ome Tom zich vooral te storen aan de marketing strategie van Rambus Inc., die er op gericht is om met lucratieve aandelendeals support van processor en geheugenfabrikanten in te kopen. Bij Intel houdt deze deal in dat het bedrijf voor $10 per aandeel 1 miljoen aandelen kan kopen wanneer 20% van de geleverde chipsets voorzien is van Rambus support. De aandelenkoers van Rambus Inc. is de afgelopen maanden weliswaar zwaar naar beneden gekieperd, maar met de huidige koers van 161,75 dollar is het aanbod van Rambus Inc. nog steeds erg aantrekkelijk voor Intel.

Met een aantal geheugenfabrikanten en mogelijk ook Sony (Playstation II) werden vergelijkbare deals gesloten. Tom zegt dat dit een Slechte Zaak is voor de consument, omdat Rambus volgens hem niet de beste oplossing is voor het geheugen bandbreedte probleem. Gezien de overvloedige publiciteit over de performance, technische problemen en prijzen van Rambus RIMMetjes zul je hier waarschijnlijk zelf ook al een mening over gevormd hebben:

When Intel 'decided' to go for Rambus technology some three years ago, it wasn't out of pure believe into technology and certainly not just 'for the good of its customers', but simply because they got an offer they couldn't refuse. Back then Rambus authorized a contingency warrant for 1 million shares of its stock to Intel, exercisable at only $10 a share, in case Chipzilla ships at least 20% of its chipsets with RDRAM-support in back-to-back quarters. As of today Intel could make some nifty 158 million Dollars once it fulfills the goal.

This stands in direct opposition to recent claims saying Intel had just 'licensed' Rambus technology just as much as AMD has, which was supposed to prove that Intel and Rambus aren't the bad boys at all. Well, as far as I know, AMD is not making some 160 million bucks if it endorses RDRAM and I can tell you that there IS a difference between receiving 160 million dollars and NOT receiving this sweet little amount of money. Don't you agree?

3D Nuts heeft een artikel geschreven over die leuke heatsinkjes op het DDR geheugen van de Hercules Prophet II. Wat blijkt? De heatsinkjes zijn erg slecht op het ram geplakt: alleen de randen maken contact waardoor de heatsinkjes meer werken als isolatie. Dat was natuurlijk onacceptabel voor hun en daarom hebben zij de heatsink eraf gesloopt, even het ram gelapt en hem weer terug gezet. Deze actie bleek goed te zijn voor het overclocken van het geheugen, het ging zonder problemen naar 400 MHz :

Now once you’ve got all your RAM sinks back on (you must be really bored to go through all this in the name of science), power your system up and try overclocking it even further. Could you get it any higher? (Funny, that’s what my wife AND Toolfan’s girl asked me last night) I was able to overclock mine all the way up to 400 stable (which is as high as Powerstrip is able to go)!!! NO anomalies or anything! The temperature of the heatsink was about 120 degrees, which is good because it shows that the RAM is doing its job. The more heat the RAM sink draws away from the RAM, the hotter it gets. Now even as I right this, I have the Unreal Tournament flyby demo running in the background. But I worry about screwing up my card, so I may clock it down a bit. On second thought, nah!

[...] Now Jon also tells us that the core is held on by some rather shitty tape, so I may look into using the above method to get some extra speed out of that. But honestly, it’s not worth it. Overclocking the GTS’s core resulted in a zero framerate increase in any of the games I tested. Even with the memory overclocked, the core is just so much faster than the memory that overclocking the core does absolutely nothing but shorten the life of your card (oh, like lapping the memory is so much healthier). So stick to overclocking the memory, but remember that heat is not the only barrier to overclocking RAM. At very high frequencies, the transistors in the RAM simply cannot conduct electricity efficiently, resulting in artifacting and lockups. So even if you keep the RAM cooler, there’s still a barrier that will keep the RAM from reaching certain speeds. So there’ll be no overclocking to 1000Mhz, kiddies.

The Register schrijft dat videokaart bakker ATi voor het fiscale derde kwartaal (eindigend op 31 mei) een verlies van 6 tot 7 dollarcent per aandeel verwacht. Dit nieuws is verrassend aangezien ATi al jaren marktleider is in de OEM markt. Het verlies wordt door ATi toegeschreven aan een wereldwijde componenten schaarste. Het is echter niet ondenkbaar dat ATI wegens het onbreken van een high-end video chipset met een goede price/performance veel OEM contracten verliest aan nVidia. Het ATi alternatief voor de GeForce en GeForce2 komt pas eind deze zomer op de markt:

The market-leading 3D graphics company blamed the loss - which it anticipates to be in the region of 6-7 cents - on a global shortage of components. It also expects to see a $56 million inventory write-down and as yet unknown one-off charges. That should push the total loss to around 13-14 cents a share.

ATI said it expects the quarter's revenue to be in the region of $300 million.

All of which is surprising, given ATI's massive strength in the OEM graphics market. Previous (profitable) quarters have been led by strong sales of the company's Rage 128 family of graphics chips and cards. The loss warning suggests that demand may have begun to fall as PC vendors have turned to more advanced products like Nvidia's GeForce 256.

Het agressieve anti-piracy beleid van de Business Software Alliance blijkt nauwelijks effect te hebben. Vorig jaar nam de piraterij met maar liefst 1% af, een resultaat dat de BSA als 'bedroevend' bestempelt. Hoe 'verschrikkelijk' de gevolgen van het illegaal kopiëren voor de software industrie zijn wordt nogmaals duidelijk uit de cijfertjes die de BSA berekend heeft: 640 miljoen gulden omzetderving. Erg hoor :

"Een bedroevend resultaat", zegt de BSA in een verklaring. Volgens de BSA kostte de Nederlandse piraterij de softwarebranche in 1999 ruim 640 miljoen gulden aan omzet. Wereldwijd werd ruim 29 miljard omzet gemist.

Op de Europese ranglijst van landen waarin het meeste omzetverlies wordt geleden door piraterij staat Nederland met Italië op een gedeelde vijfde plek. Op de wereldranglijst staat Nederland op de tiende plaats.

Jeroen de Jong schrijft dat een commisie onderleiding van prof. Franken de regering geadviseerd heeft om de grondwet aan te passen voor het digitale tijdperk. Ze stellen voor enkele artikelen te wijzigen en eentje toe te voegen om zo vrijheid van meningsuiting en privacy op internet te regelen :

Eerder werd een poging de grondwet aan te passen aan ontwikkelingen als fax en internet in de Eerste Kamer op de lange baan geschoven.

Artikel 7 van de grondwet regelt de vrijheid van meningsuiting en noemt drukpers, radio en televisie. Om ook internet onder de beschermende werking van de grondwet te brengen, stelt de commissie voor dit uit te breiden met 'overige middelen'.

Bovendien moet het nieuwe artikel ook handelsinformatie en productinformatie beschermen. Ook krijgt de regering de plicht te zorgen voor pluriformiteit, veelvormigheid, in het aanbod van informatie.

Artikel 10, dat de privacy beschermt, moet aangescherpt worden in verband van de opslag van persoonsgegevens in computers. Artikel 13 regelt het brief-, telefoon- en telegraafgeheim, maar zegt niets over email of fax. De commissie stelt voor dit artikel zo te wijzigen dat het recht om vertrouwelijk te communiceren centraal staat, via welk medium is van minder belang.

Sake bracht ons een linkje naar het Kentucky Linux Athlon Testbed 2, een low-cost Beowulf cluster met 64 Athlon 700 computers. De nodes beschikken elk over vier 100Mbit netwerkkaarten en zijn via negen 32-poorts switches aan elkaar geknoopt. Hierdoor staan alle bakken in direkt contact met elkaar ('flat neighborhood' netwerk topologie), waardoor de beschikbare netwerk bandbreedte optimaal benut kan worden en netwerk latencies zo laag mogelijk zijn:

May 2000, Lexington, Kentucky: Researchers at the University of Kentucky have constructed and demonstrated an innovative new, scalable, parallel supercomputer that achieves application performance of more than 1 billion floating point operations per second (GFLOPS) for every $650 spent on building the machine. The approach used to design and build this machine makes it cost-effective for solving a wide range of problems, from drug design using computational chemistry to design of quieter printers using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Thus, this breakthrough is not only a milestone, but also will enable many more scientists and engineers to use computational models.

Less than a decade ago, a 1GFLOPS supercomputer cost millions of dollars; the latest traditional supercomputers are closer to $10,000 per GFLOPS. "Beowulfs," clusters of PCs configured to work together as a single supercomputer, have recently brought that cost down to about $3,000 per GFLOPS. KLAT2, Kentucky Linux Athlon Testbed 2 (http://aggregate.org/KLAT2/), improves upon the Beowulf concept by using a variety of new technologies to make more efficient use of commodity PC hardware -- thus breaking the $1,000 per GFLOPS barrier.

To function as a supercomputer, the PCs within a cluster need to be interconnected by a high-performance network. Instead of expensive gigabit network hardware, KLAT2's network uses lots of cheap 100Mb/s Ethernet hardware in a new configuration called a "Flat Neighborhood" network.

Using conventional software, PC processors are approaching the speed of the processors in traditional supercomputers. KLAT2's software takes advantage of special features of the AMD Athlon processor to dramatically accelerate some computations. 3DNow! 32-bit vector floating point allows KLAT2's sixty-four 700MHz Athlons to achieve more than 64GFLOPS while solving a system of 40,960 equations -- slightly faster than the 64-bit arithmetic performance of the machine ranked 150th in Jack Dongarra's list of the 500 fastest supercomputers in the world (http://www.top500.org/).

KLAT2's Athlon processors, which have a current retail value of about $13,000, were donated by AMD. The network cost just over $8,000. Everything else to build the cluster was about $20,000. That cost includes a few unusual items, such as pizza and soda for the over 30 Electrical Engineering and Computer Science students who volunteered to help build the system.

From the creation of the first Linux PC cluster in February 1994 to the construction of KLAT2, Hank Dietz and his students have continued to improve cluster performance by making compilers, hardware architecture, and operating system work together more efficiently. At the University of Kentucky, as Professor of Electrical Engineering and James F. Hardymon Chair in Networking, Dietz's goal is to use the new technologies to make inexpensive "Personalized Turnkey Superclusters (PeTS)" that will allow scientists and engineers to easily solve their most important computational problems.

dEjAvU meldt dat Patrick Schmid van Tom's Hardware Guide 12 socket 370 Via Apollo Pro 133A plankjes getest heeft. De meeste plankjes leverden wel een redelijke performance (voor een 133A chipset dan...) maar hij vondt het overclocken op deze plankjes niet ideaal, te weinig FSB's of geen voltage tweaking:

The clear performance winners are the Gigabyte GA-6VX7-4X and the Asus CUV4X-M. Both generated really good results, which can almost be compared to some slower BX133 motherboards. Stability was not an issue this time; all candidates were very reliable.

[...] Going to the next computer shop and buying a VIA Apollo Pro 133A motherboard using Socket 370 seems like a safe affair today. None of the boards caused any problems during our tests. Only two did not reach the expected performance, but those deficits might get fixed with BIOS updates.

Looking back at the test, I'm missing a real overclocking champion! Of course there's the little Asus board, but as this MicroATX motherboard cannot provide enough flexibility for most home users. Elitegroup comes with all important features, but the P6VAP-A+ still lacks performance. All boards let you chose FSB speeds up to 150 MHz, but as long as you cannot increase the processor voltage, overclocking might be a rather disappointing affair. IWill even offers 166 MHz FSB, which did not run stable though. I doubt that the additional IDE controller chip will ever tolerate heavy overclocking.

Bigs liet ons weten dat de eerste testversie van de nieuwe (en langverwachte) Linux 2.4 kernel is uitgebracht. Hier de note van mr. Linus himself:

But I'll be gone for three weeks, and in the meantime there's a "2.4.0-test1" kernel here. It's not a real 2.4.0 release, but we should be getting closer. There's going to be other test-kernels after this one, and we'll find bugs. And bad behaviour. And wonderful features which we'll document some day.

Alan Cox is most likely to maintain a "2.4.0-ac" series while I'm gone. Not the same thing as 2.4.0 either, but by testing these test-kernels out and giving feedback, we'll get to that some day.

Okjanus passde ons deze link naar ZDNet, waar Intel te kennen geeft dat het voor de komende 12 maanden een schaarste van componenten verwacht. Het einde van de leveringsproblemen, waar Intel feitelijk al sinds februari mee kampt, is dus nog lang niet in zicht:

Computer chip maker Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) expects a short supply in the industry for another 12 months as components run short, its president and chief executive officer Craig Barrett said on Thursday. "There is nil balance between supply and demand," Barrett told a news conference in response to a question on the semiconductor industry and added that investments made to address the shortage will continue for a while.

Infoworld meldt dat IBM gisteren een 64-way NUMA-Q server heeft aangekondigd. Het systeempje is gebaseerd op de nieuwe 700MHz Pentium III Xeon, die afgelopen maandag door Intel werd gereleased. Met IBM's clustering software kunnen tot 4 servers naast elkaar geplant worden, wat bij elkaar goed is voor 256 processors en 256GB geheugen . Aan een Linux versie voor NUMA servers wordt gewerkt:

"The thrust of this announcement is we can now offer Intel technology from the entry level all the way up to data center-class deployments. If you want to go from two to 64 chips in a single unit from a single vendor, we can offer that," said Steve Frye, who manages the marketing the NUMA-Q brand for IBM's Web Server Unit.

Company officials also announced their intent to deliver a version of Linux optimized for NUMA servers. They hope to deliver a beta version by the end of this year, with the finished version sometime next year.

Using IBM's clustering software, users can lash together up to four 64-chip servers, for a total of 256 chips and 256GB of memory, and reportedly not suffer any performance degradation, according to company officials.

The Jester schrijft dat er in Nederland vrij veel "Warez dudez" rondlopen want we zijn inmiddels de top 10 ingewandeld van het illegaal softwaregebruik-lijstje :

"Onderzoeken van o.a. de BSA hebben aangetoond dat het aandeel legale software in Nederland nog steeds groter is dan het aandeel Warez... Met een 5de plaats in Europa en een 10de mondiaal blijkt dat wij nog steeds een zuinig volk zijn.
Meest verrassende conclusie van het onderzoek: er is tóch legale software in de Russische Federatie!! (je moet goed zoeken, dat wel...)":

Vandaag zijn de resultaten van het vijfde jaarlijkse onderzoek naar het wereldwijde illegale gebruik van zakelijke software bekendgemaakt. Sinds 1994 wordt dit onderzoek verricht in opdracht van de BSA (Business Software Alliance) en de SIIA (Software Information Industry Association) door de IPR (International Planning Research Corporation). In 1999 werd wereldwijd door softwarepiraterij ruim 29 miljard gulden verlies geleden. In de vijf jaar dat dit onderzocht werd, is het totale verlies hiermee op meer dan 140 miljard gulden gekomen. Het illegale gebruik van zakelijke software in Nederland is ten opzichte van 1998 gedaald van 45% naar 44%. Met dit resultaat komt Nederland op een gedeelde vijfde plaats met Italië op de Europese ranglijst. De 44% softwarepiraterij kostte de branche in 1999 ruim 640 miljoen gulden aan omzet. Op de wereldranglijst van verliezen als gevolg van softwarepiraterij staat Nederland maar liefst op de tiende plaats. Griekenland staat bovenaan (71%) en het Verenigd Koninkrijk heeft het laagste percentage (26%). Het gemiddelde percentage in West Europa over 1999 was 34%, tegen 36% in 1998. De schade voor de Nederlandse softwarebranche over 1999 bedraagt volgens het rapport van IPR ongeveer 640 miljoen gulden. Het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Duitsland leden de grootste verliezen: respectievelijk 1,65 miljard en 1,58 miljard gulden. Frankrijk kwam met 1,3 miljard gulden op een goede derde plaats. Oost-Europa lijkt in vergelijking met andere regio's kleine verliezen in guldens te lijden, doch het gemiddelde percentage illegaal gebruikte zakelijke software is er met 70% schrikbarend hoog. Rusland staat bovenaan de ranglijst met 89% illegale software en verliest hiermee 400 miljoen gulden aan omzet.

Volgens een onderzoek van de Amerikaanse muziek industrie hebben de CD verkopen ernstig te lijden onder het fanatieke MP3 leechen bij studenten en scholieren. In de buurt van scholen zouden verkopen de afgelopen twee jaar merkbaar gedaald zijn, terwijl deze elders juist stegen. Over een mogelijk iets te hoge prijs van CD's wordt vanzelfsprekend met geen woord gerept...

Sales of recorded music near college campuses declined over the past two years while rising elsewhere, according to a study the music industry believes shows the corrosive impact of people downloading music for free.

Music sales during the first three months of 2000 were up 12 percent over the first quarter of 1998. Yet at stores located within five miles of a college campuses, which account for roughly half of all albums bought, sales went down 4 percent over the same period, according to a study released Wednesday. It was commissioned by Reciprocal, Inc., a digital rights management company.

[...] Reciprocal's study used figures from Soundscan, the company that measures music purchases, and is the most extensive attempt to try and document whether downloading affects sales.

Webwereld schrijft dat gebruikers van NS Planner Plus klagen over installatieproblemen. Ook blijkt de routeplanner bijzonder creatief te zijn in het vinden van omwegen. De Nederlandse Spoorwegen erkennen dat het plannertje ziek is:

Woordvoerder Michiel Jonker van de NS bevestigt de bugs in de Planner Plus. "Het product heeft kinderziektes. We hebben een aantal meldingen binnen gekregen van problemen met de installatieprocedure. Dat ligt aan de Install Shield, een apart programma dat de installatie verzorgt", zegt Jonker. "Ook de problemen met de routeplanner zijn ons bekend."

Sterker nog, de fouten in de routeplanner heeft Jonker zelf ook ondervonden. "Als ik de route volg die het programma opgeeft van mijn huis in Vught naar het station, dan loop ik om", zegt Jonker lachend.

S3 heeft gisteren op een feestje van Real Networks voor het eerst de Rio Digital Audio Receiver gedemonstreerd. Met dit apparaat kan muziek via de telefoonaansluitingen van de PC naar andere kamers in huis overgebeamd worden. Bij gebruik van meerdere receivers kan per receiver het gewenste muziekje geselecteerd worden:

Microsoft heeft onlangs Release Candidate 1 van Windows Millenium Edition uitgebracht. Het nieuwe consumer OS zelf staat nog steeds gepland voor een release ergens volgende maand. Deze nieuwe RC bevat naast de gebruikelijke bugfixes nieuwe versies van Windows Media Player 7 en Internet Explorer 5.5:

Officieel zegt Microsoft nog steeds dat Windows ME, de opvolger van Windows 98, in de tweede helft van dit jaar in de schappen zal liggen. De uitgifte van RC1 is een 'belangrijke mijlpaal', geeft een woordvoerder van Microsoft aan.

De Release Candidates volgen op de betaversies van het besturingssysteem. Beta 3 werd in april naar testers gezonden. Die versie bevatte volgens Microsoft alle belangrijke functies die ook in de definitieve versie komen. Ontwikkelaars werken nu alleen nog aan verbetering van kwaliteit en prestatie.

Onder de nieuwe functies zijn verbeterde multimediacapaciteiten, waaronder de bundeling van Windows Media Player 7 en de nieuwe Windows Movie Maker. De softwarebundel bevat daarnaast een verbeterd bewerkingsprogramma voor plaatjes. Ook Internet Explorer 5.5 wordt meegeleverd.

Rechter Thomas Penfield Jackson heeft gisteren aangekondigd Microsoft in 3 stukken te willen hakken. Naast een applicatie en OS bedrijf zou er ook een Microsoft internetbedrijf moeten komen. De zaak draait al een tijdje en Jackson wil binnenkort een definitieve uitspraak doen. Microsoft kreeg slechts 2 dagen om te reageren:

Dat Jackson vaart achter de zaak wil zetten is niet nieuw. Toen begin dit jaar onderhandelingen over een schikking stukliepen zei Jackson al dat hij snel tot een uitspraak wilde komen. De uitspraak moet dan zo snel mogelijk worden behandeld door een hogere rechtbank.

Microsoft is niet blij met de vleugels die Jackson heeft gekregen. Advocaten van het softwarebedrijf vinden dat ze ruim de tijd moeten krijgen om te reageren op de voorstellen van de overheid. "We kunnen niet zwijgend instemmen met ons eigen overlijden, het maakt niet uit hoe slecht het vooruitzicht is", aldus Microsoft-raadsman John Warden.

Het plotselinge snelrecht van Jackson zal Microsoft dan ook als argument gebruiken in de volgende rechtszaal. "Wij wilden in de rechtbank praten over de gevolgen van opsplitsing", zei William Neukom, leider van het juridische team van Microsoft. "De rechtbank heeft besloten ons de tijd niet te geven."

Als neue Bezeichnung soll ab sofort in Handbüchern und sonstigen Publikationen nur noch KT133 verwendet werden. Der Beschriftung auf den bereits gefertigten Chipsätzen braucht VIA ohnehin nicht zu ändern: Auf diesen stand und steht die technische Bezeichnung VT8363.

On the KZ133 front, Gigabyte, Microstar and Biostar are likely to be first out of the starting gates. Except we have now had it confirmed from a source within Via that the KZ moniker has now changed to KT. This is because KZ has an unfortunate connotation in Germany, being the initials for concentration camp. Although the change will involve some cost to Via in terms of data sheets and the like, we are informed the firm felt this was the right thing to do.

And according to other, reliable reports, there isn't any clock locking on Socket A. Both engineering samples and production units are not clock locked. Spitfire (Duron) has a lower core voltage than the T'Bird Athlon, and power consumption is very high indeed.

AMD Zone heeft een aantal scans gepost van de Duron benchmarks die in een Hong Kong's magazine gepubliceerd werden. Zoals je ziet is de Duron in vrijwel alle benchmarks net iets trager dan de Athlon en Pentium III. Intel heeft bekend gemaakt dat het in New Mexico een nieuwe 300mm-wafer fabriek voor de produktie van microprocessors neer gaat planten. De nieuwe produktie faciliteit zal in 2002 in gebruik genomen worden en maakt gebruik van een 0,13micron koper-interconnect procédé. De afgelopen tijd heeft Intel nogal wat problemen gehad om te voldoen aan de grote vraag naar processors. Met de bouw van nieuwe fabrieken hoop Intel een eind te maken aan deze problemen:

The new microprocessor fab, which will run initially on a 0.13-micron process technology, will be based at Intel's complex in Rio Rancho, outside Albuquerque. The greenfield plant will have 135,000 sq. ft. of clean room space adjacent to the company's existing Fab 11.

[...] So far known simply as Fab 11 Expansion, the fab will make a range of Intel microprocessors. Although it will be launched in 2002 with 0.13-micron processing, Intel will have introduced the next-generation fabrication technology in other fabs before that time. As with all Intel 0.13-micron processing, the fab will use copper interconnects in the chips' metal layers to improve performance, Splinter said.

The new fab will employ up to 1,000 additional workers in addition to the 5,000 already employed at the New Mexico campus.

Dokter Tom blurbt dat de Intel 'Almador' chipset met (DDR) SDRAM support, waarvan het bestaan begin deze week door PC Welt aan het licht werd gebracht, niet bedoelt is voor Willamette maar voor een nieuwe generatie Coppermines. Deze Coppermines zullen op 0,13 micron geproduceerd worden en hebben een lager voltage van 1,3 V. Als deze informatie van Tom juist is dan is er nog steeds geen zekerheid over het bestaan van een SDRAM Willamette chipset:

You could find it on the website of the German Magazine 'PC-Welt' late yesterday and then later on The Register as well. Intel is developing a chipset that will support (DDR?)-SDRAM. This chipset carries the code name 'Almador', not 'Armador', and is scheduled for the beginning of 2001. Our latest information shows however, that 'Almador' is not a chipset for Intel's next generation IA32 processor with the code name 'Willamette', but for the upcoming low-voltage 'Coppermine'. Those future 'Coppermine' processors are nothing mystical; they are not just notebook CPUs, but the next generation Pentium III processors manufactured in 0.13 micron process. Thus the GTL+ signals will carry 1.3 V instead of the 1.5 V that are used by 'Coppermine' Pentium III right now. You can imagine, that the lower GTL+-voltage requires a new chipset and that's what 'Almador' is going to be.

You have certainly read the Solano Preview yesterday and might remember my little quiz at the end of the article. Well, the answer is clear, the performance of Solano would obviously increase even more if DDR SDRAM was supported by it. Thus RDRAM would be declassed even more too. The 'Almador' info comes just at the right moment in time, because 'Almador' will obviously be the successor of Solano (aka 'i815'), and it comes with integrated 3D graphics as well. This is really good news and shows that Intel might have realized that they can score a huge amount of plus points with their worldwide customers if they offer alternatives to RDRAM. Now the only thing I want to hear is that there will indeed be a chipset for 'Willamette', which will support different memory than RDRAM as well. DDR SDRAM seems to be the most obvious choice right now, but I am aware that there are even faster alternatives to Rambus under development right now. It wouldn't surprise me if Intel was looking into those as well. This could mean that the Rambus star is slowly sinking.

Sun heeft tijdens een conference call laten weten dat de release van de UltraSparc III processors is uitgesteld tot het derde kwartaal. Oorspronkelijk stond deze proc gepland voor het eind van de eerste helft van 2000:

Ace's Hardware meldt dat de nieuwe i815/i815E en i820E chipsets van Intel komende maand hun debuut zullen maken. De release van de i820E staat als eerste op de planning en zal waarschijnlijk tijdens de Computex beurs in Taipei plaatsvinden. Deze verbeterde revisie van de i820 is voorzien van een nieuwe I/O Controller Hub (ICH2) met geïntegreerde LAN, ATA100 en USB2.0 controller. De i820E kent géén Memory Translator Hub en ondersteunt derhalve geen SDRAM. Hiervoor in de plaats komen de i815 en i815E SDRAM chipsets, die naar verwachting op 19 juni geïntroduceerd worden. De i815 (Solano) wordt geleverd met de oude ICH (ATA66, USB1.1), terwijl de i815E (Solano II) van de moderne ICH2 is voorzien.

StorageReview heeft de Western Digital Caviar WD450AA hardeschijf gereviewed, een fijn schijfje uitgerust met drie platters van 15GB die met 5400 rondjes per minuut rond zoemen :

The Caviar WD450AA is Western Digital's second-generation post-IBM product. Like the previously reviewed Maxtor DiamondMax 60, the drive stores an amazing 15 gigs of data per platter. Unlike Maxtor, however, WD has capped the flagship Caviar with three rather than four platters, resulting in a maximum capacity of 45 gigs… certainly nothing to sneeze at. As is the case with all of WD's "AA" suffixed products, the WD450AA features a 5400rpm spindle speed. The unit's seek time is rated at 9.5 milliseconds, a bit high in a market where manufacturers are often delving below 9ms. The drive features a two megabyte buffer. A three year warranty protects the drive.

Edward schrijft dat we nog 1 tot 2 weken langer moeten wachten voordat de Voodoo5 5500 in de winkel ligt. De levering van de Voodoo5 is uitgesteld omdat 3dfx misschien last heeft van 'field failure rates' wat betekent dat de kaarten niet in alle systemen werken:
