Bij GamePC staat een review klaar van de Abit KA7-100 die naast o.a. 6xPCI, 1xISA en 4xDIMM dus ook besschikt over een onplank ATA/100 controller die GamePC testte met de nieuwe IBM 75GXP harddisk. Tijdens het bios-tweaking kwam Chris ook heel verrassend verstopte RAID-functionaliteit tegen:

There's just nothing incredibly wrong with this board that we can complain about. Unfortunately, it's shelf life may be short lived, thanks to AMD's quick progression from the Slot-A to Socket-A format with their upcoming Thunderbird and Duron chips. AMD has said they WILL be manufacturing some Slot-A Thunderbird Athlons, but will quickly make the move to Socket-A as VIA KZ-133 platforms start to hit the marketplace. While we don't have any confirmation of this, it would be absolutely stupid if Abit didn't have a KZ-133 motherboard in the works, and Abit isn't stupid. Let's hope they can get a KZ-133 motherboard out soon with all the features we've come to know and love with the KA7-100. Kudos to Abit on not only bringing ATA-100 into mainstream, but (maybe unintentionally) bringing ATA-100 RAID to us as well.

Vooral het BIOS gedeelte (hier boven te zien) is inderdaad zeer innovatief. Het maakt de wereld voor ons tweakerstjes weer iets mooier.
Door de BIOS implementatie heb je (hoewel beperkt) meer controle over het overklok gedrag van je systeem.

Ars Technica heeft in dit artikel de nieuwste developer versie van MacOS X, DP4, besproken. Ik moet toch toegeven dat het er best wel leuk uitziet allemaal . DP4 is de eerste MacOS X-versie die ook OpenGL ondersteund. De resultaten waren volgens Ars goed te noemen:

I explored Project Builder by playing around with some of the example projects included in DP4. The most interesting examples turned out to the OpenGL demos. DP4 is the first release of Mac OS X to include OpenGL, and the implementation is impressive. Subjectively, it feels faster than OpenGL in Mac OS 9. The demos include the usual range of OpenGL test apps, many of which were ported from old SGI demos.

All of these (admittedly, not very challenging) demo animations ran as smooth as glass on a G3/400 with slowest Rage128 card ever shipped by Apple. This bodes well for OpenGL game performance in Mac OS X.[break]Over de mogelijke release date wordt het volgende gezegd:[/break]The question is now whether or not Mac OS X will be done by 2001. I think that's a pretty safe bet, give or take a few months for Apple's traditional "it's shipping, we're just not quite ready to send you yours yet" delay. Een nieuwe eeuw, een nieuwe richting
ABIT probeert op elke grote computerbeurs nieuwe ontwikkelingen bekend te maken en dit jaar kondigt ABIT een aantal nieuwe produkten aan, die laten zien dat ABIT steeds meer uitgroeit tot een bedrijf met een breed produktenpalet. Gentus Linux
Om de toewijding aan de Linux-gebruikers verder te ondersteunen, kondigt ABIT de eerste revisie aan van de populaire GentusTM Linux distributie. In februari 2000 was ABIT de eerste hardware fabrikant die een compleet nieuwe distributie van Linux ontwikkelde, speciaal gericht op het oplossen van compatibiliteitsproblemen tussen Linux en ABIT Hardware. ABIT levert Gentus gratis bij alle nieuwe moederborden en ondersteunt de Gentusgebruikers via www.gentus.com. Gentus 2.0 ondersteunt nu ook systemen met VIA en AMD hardware. Verder herkent Genuts 2.0 automatisch het gebruikte moederbord en installeert ‘’pre-build’’ kernels, die zorgen voor volledige ondersteuning van ATA66 en ATA100 onder Linux.

De PerMonTM tool is is natuurlijk ook weer geïntregeerd in Gentus 2.0, met verschillende nieuwe functies. De nieuwe ‘’ABIT Conf’’ configuration tool bevat drivers voor de geïntregeerde grafische controller van de i810 chipset, sound drivers voor AC97 voor ABIT moederborden gebaseerd op de i810 en VIA chipsets en de drivers voor de Creative Soundblaster Live! Soundcards. Ook de drivers voor grafische kaarten met een TNT2 of GeForce chipset zijn aanwezig. ABIT Graphics

Metname het laatste deel is een indrukwekkende bezigheid. Abit is duidelijk bezig zich uit te breiden naar andere segmenten van de computermarkt, en is in die zin ook zeer zeker een steeds groter tegenwicht tegen AOpen en ook Asus die zich al langer op de Grafische en Geluidskaarten markt manifesteren.

De specificaties van de kaart beloven in ieder geval zeer veel goeds. Ook Tweakers zal de komende tijd de ontwikkelingen bij ABIT in de gaten houden, en zullen zeker in de toekomst laten weten hoe succesvol o.a. deze geluidskaart gaat worden.

GameFan zag dat iedereen een GF2 vs. Voodoo5 5500 artikel maakte en dacht... dah kunnuh wij ohk! En ziedaar. Een 7-pagina's lang artikel met nog eens alle voordelen en nadelen tegenover elkaar gezet. De conclusie mag ook geen verrassing zijn: hardcore fps-lovers nemen een GeForce 2 GTS, beeldbewonderaars snellen vrijdag naar de winkel voor een Voodoo5 5500.

Which card is for you? Well, I think it's pretty clear that those hard-core Quakers who want the ultimate in frame-rate will find their destiny in a GeForce 2 GTS; people who spend all day deathmatching competitively usually aren't the types to stop and say, "Wow, this map is pretty." In fact, many of them turn textures off completely, focusing on the pure, uninterrupted fury of Quake-style deathmatches for their stimuli. These people--if you can equate them as people--will settle for nothing other than the pure speed king of Quake, and that title belongs to the GTS.

The rest of us gamers don't have such a clear choice, however. Those looking for the ultimate in image quality will probably want a Voodoo 5 5500; its 4x FSAA has no competition. NVIDIA's FSAA comes close to the Voodoo 5's 2x FSAA, but in my opinion, the Voodoo 5 still wins. The GTS is limited in that regard, as well; it has some problems in performance and with D3D FSAA, and the Voodoo 5 does not. I have no doubt that NVIDIA will improve performance and compatibility with future drivers; it's never been content to be second best. Right now, however, the Voodoo 5 wins the FSAA war. The addition of T & L and per-pixel shading in future games may totter quality comparisons in the months to come, but for right now, 3dfx edges ahead.

Bij PC World is een review te vinden van de Compaq TFT8020, een 18" TFT flatpanelscherm. Ja, die zou ik ook wel op mijn bureau willen hebben staan! Toch even doorsparen dan: in het Westen wordt hij nu voor $3399 verkocht. Voor die prijs mag je toch wel iets verwachten, en de kwaliteit blijkt dan ook uitstekend:

The TFT8020 passed our tough tests with flying colors. Resolution scaling was very good, color gradients and intensity were accurate and vibrant, and there were no problems displaying lines and patterns. In one test that shows the differential between slightly dissimilar shades of gray, we saw all 16 gray bars--in our experience, a rarity among LCD monitors at any price.

In other tests, color screens were uniform throughout the entire display, and there were no annoying moire patterns and none of the effects of interference often found in analog LCD monitors. Font readability was likewise impressive: When we viewed black text on a white background, small fonts were readable in a range of typefaces. Icon labels on the desktop were also perfect, and drop-down menus at 1280 by 1024 were sharp and easily readable. Equally impressive was the job the monitor did in displaying megapixel images from a digital camera.

[CoSD]Headbanger schrijft dat bij Ace's Hardware een interessant artikel te vinden is waarin 12 videokaarten (geen voodoo5 5500) worden getest. Ze komen tot de niet erg verassende conclusie dat de GeForce2 het snelste is in 3D en de G400 de perfecte kaart is voor hoge kwaliteit 2D:

It is still very important to understand what your needs are and which videocard is best for you. The perfect videocard does not yet exist. Our results have given you a lot of evidence and we hope this article will help you to get the most return on investment.

If photo editing is your main activity a cheap G400 and a fast CPU will do the job better than an expensive Geforce DDR card and a slower CPU. The Matrox G400 is the most interesting solution for 2D-professionals who want crisp and stable images at very high resolutions.

[...] A gamer with a tight-budget could be tempted by the low price of some 64-bit offerings (like the savage 4 and TNT2M64), but if he or she picks up such a card, he or she will probably throw this card out the window after a watching the slide-show that was supposed to be a 3D-game. Save a bit more and get a Voodoo 2000 if you want the lowest price.

If 3D-gaming is your favorite activity, the Geforce DDR/Geforce2 GTS cards are the way to go. When you play at 32-bit and high resolutions, no videocard can compete with the Geforce DDR and Geforce 2 GTS cards. In our next article we will investigate high-end offerings like the GeForce 2 and we'll see how much competition nVidia can expect from the likes of 3DFX and ATI in the near future.

Waar overklokkers reeds voor vreesden lijkt nu werkelijkheid te worden: volgens de informatie die een bezoeker van AMD Zone uit een Hong Kong's magazine opviste, zijn de AMD Duron en Thunderbird multiplier-locked. Overklokken middels het verhogen van multiplier (wat met behulp van een GFD mogelijk is bij de Athlon) wordt daardoor onmogelijk, waardoor busspeed overclocking als enige alternatief overblijft. Uit resultaten met Irongate en KX133 moederplanken is inmiddels overduidelijk gebleken dat de EV6 bus slechts beperkt overklokbaarbaar is. Indien de Duron en Thunderbird daadwerkelijk multiplier-locked zijn, dan zouden beide processors meteen een stuk minder interessant voor overklokkers:

Zoals de naam reeds doet vermoeden gaat het hier om een high-end server OS, o.a. bedoelt voor "large dotcoms, application service providers, online transaction processing, enterprise resource planning & data warehousing". Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of the Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Datacenter Server beta 2 release to industry partners including server hardware vendors, IHVs, ISVs and research institutes. Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is Microsoft's operating system for the most demanding levels of availability and scalability. Delivery of beta 2 to qualified Datacenter Server hardware vendors enables them to provide a complete evaluation platform to beta and Joint Development Program (JDP) participants for high-end enterprise computing solutions, such as large dotcoms, application service providers, online transaction processing, enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, data warehousing, enterprise messaging and server consolidation.

"The availability of beta 2 and the launch of the Datacenter JDP is a key milestone toward completing the validation of all the elements of the Windows Datacenter Program," said Michel Gambier, group product manager of Enterprise Server Marketing at Microsoft. "Working closely with our industry partners, beta and JDP customers, our objective is not only to test the operating system, but also the Datacenter Hardware Compatibility Test and services framework of the program."

Beta and JDP participants are working with Microsoft and server vendors to test and evaluate the combination of high-end server platforms and Windows 2000 Datacenter Server. They will also evaluate the Windows Datacenter Program's stringent hardware qualification and mission-critical services as jointly implemented by server hardware vendors and Microsoft.

Linuxputer boer VA Linux Systems heeft zijn aandeelhouders blij verrast met de bekendmaking van sterke financiële kwartaalcijfers. De omzet bedroeg 34,6 miljoen dollar en het verwachte verlies van 23 dollarcent per aandeel bleek uiteindelijk lager uit te vallen op $0,13 per aandeel. VA levert onder andere servers aan Deja.com en Doubleclick. Tevens is het bedrijf eigenaar van Andover.net, uitgever van Slashdot en Freshmeat:

Analysts surveyed by First Call/Thompson Financial expected a loss of 23 cents per share for the fiscal third quarter, which ended April 28. Excluding non-cash items, VA reported a net loss of 13 cents per share, the company said. Excluding non-cash charges, net losses declined from $6.3 million the previous quarter to $4.5 million in the third quarter, the company said.

Revenue this quarter grew 71 percent from the previous quarter's $20.2 million and 710 percent from the same quarter a year ago.

"It was a fantastic third quarter by almost any measure," VA chief executive Larry Augustin boasted in a conference call. Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown analyst Phil Reuppel agreed, calling it a "breakthrough quarter."

The Register schrijft dat uit een recente Intel roadmap is gebleken dat de Colusa chipset voor Foster (Xeon versie van Willamette) voorzien zal zijn van 100MHz PC1600 DDR SDRAM support:

One slide we were shown is perfectly clear about the server market and according to our extensive handwritten notes says: "Intel has selected to support DDR in servers. The main issue with Rambus memory in servers is the maximum memory size, volume density and also "chipkill", which is not an issue in the data processing market."

Further, Intel's DDR focus is on 100MHz (200MT/s) registered DDR DIMMs, and will be used in the mid range and high end four way server market -- which, by the by, seems to be the initial target for the Foster (nee Willamette) plaform.

Intel is pursuing every course possible to create six plus layer server designs with 100MHz registered DIMMs, and is also working directly with the Dramurai vendors to ensure continuity.

AMD en VIA hebben desktop chipsets met ondersteuning voor 133MHz PC2100 DDR SDRAM op de planning staan.

Vanwege de grote vraag naar flashgeheugenchips gaan Fujitsu en AMD samen 1,54 miljard euro investeren in een nieuwe fabriek. Als deze eenmaal actief is zal hij de totale capaciteit voor flashgeheugenchips op twee- of driemaal het huidige niveau brengen:

De wereldwijde vraag naar flashgeheugenchips is momenteel zo groot dat de belangrijkste chipfabrikanten genoodzaakt zijn om in allerijl zwaar te investeren in nieuwe faciliteiten. Volgens recente berichten zullen Fujitsu en AMD 1,54 miljard euro investeren in een nieuwe fabriek. De bouw start nog deze zomer en zou tegen eind 2002 een volledig werkende chipfaciliteit opleveren. Eens actief, zou de nieuwe fabriek de totale capaciteit voor flashgeheugenchips op twee- of driemaal het huidige niveau brengen.

Maar AMD en Fujitsu zijn niet de enigen die een graantje willen meepikken van de verhoogde vraag. Gisteren maakte Intel een plan bekend om de komende twee jaar meer dan 2,2 miljard euro te investeren in flashgeheugen. Het merendeel van de fondsen zal gaan naar de conversie van twee bestaande Intel-faciliteiten naar een 0,18-micron productieproces, naast een fabriek van Rockwell die al eerder door Intel werd overgenomen.

Naast wonderboy Anand hebben ook Sharky Extreme en Thresh's FiringSquad reviews online gekieperd van deze nieuwste Intel proc. Hier een korte performance analyse van Sharky:

In Quake III Arena, the Pentium III 933MHz picks up where the 866MHz left off. The "Coppermine" core once again shows off how well it scales all the way from 667MHz-1Ghz. The 933MHz outperformed the Athlon 1GHz by a significant margin of 10.8fps and at 119.7fps wasn't too far off the Pentium III 1GHz either. The Athlon 950MHz also falls a little behind the 933MHz, proving that, at higher clock speeds, the Pentium III has a significant advantage in Quake III Arena. As we've stated in previous reviews, this is ultimately due to the Pentium's full-speed on-die L2 cache, which keeps the Pentium's core well fed with data and instructions while the Athlon sits hungry, waiting for more. When AMD ships their Athlons with the new "Thunderbird" (later on this summer) core and its full speed on-die cache, the Pentium III will likely have a strong challenger at high clock speeds, but by then, Intel's Willamette won't be far behind. The big wheel keeps on turning… [break]Bij Thresh's FiringSquad wilden ze weleens testen of dit beestje de 1000Mhz kan trekken... Nou helaas niet dus; zelfs na het uppen van het voltage naar 1.85V kwam het ding niet verder dan 952MHz [/break] We were very anxious to see how high the chip would overclock. Would we finally be able to break the gigahertz barrier? At 933MHz, a measly 10% overclock would put us over the top.

We whipped out our trusty golden orb cooler, our tube of thermal paste, the BE6-II, an Abit Slocket III and then we went to work. Unfortunately, we were only able to get the processor up to 952MHz. Yes, you read that correctly. We were only able to increase the FSB 3MHz above the standard 133MHz FSB speed even after we raised the voltage from 1.70V to 1.85V. At first we thought that the Voodoo 5 couldn't handle the overclocked AGP bus, but we determined that it wasn't the Voodoo's fault after a little testing. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Bij AthlonOC.com hebben ze eens gekeken naar de prestaties van het Biostar M7MKE KX133 bordje met 5xPCI, 1xISA, 1xAGP, 1xAMR en 3xDIMM. De plank is niet echt gericht op overclockers maar bleek toch zeer goed te presteren en wist zelfs de Abit KA7 te verslaan in verscheidene benchmarks. Daarnaast is hij met slechts een prijskaartje van $125 dollar zo ongeveer het goedkoopste KX133 plankje op de markt. Hier een hap uit de conclusie:

Yes there is some overclocking options available with this board. I have had this board running on a 120Mhz FSB using a multiple of 6 and the memory set for the FSB speed! I was able to hit 127Mhz bus using the KA7. A fairly impressive overclock since this board isn’t really made for the overclocking type.

With only 2 fan headers on this entire board it's not the most friendly board to all you cooling nuts out there. There should be 2 fan headers by the CPU, not on the ENTIRE board. Most people have dual fan coolers so you will probably want to pick up a 3pin Y adapter from somebody like coolerguys. It's only about $3 but it will save you from having to stretch a wire across your board to the other fan header.

Biostar is not even aiming at us power users with this board. The target here is the entry level user.

This board shows that with the lack of features. Some might say this is a plus, some might say it's a big minus. This board has great straight out of the box performance. At $125 it is one of the cheapest KX133 boards on the market right now. Making it a good choice for an entry level board. Also it is VERY easy to setup. The lack of features translates to easier setup. All of you experienced users will probably want to spend the extra money and get the KA7.

De Socket 370 'superkoelers' vergelijking bij Hardwareinfo.net is van een update voorzien. Naast dat nu ook de GlobalWin FKP32 werd onderzocht is er ook gekeken naar de mate van herrie die de coolers produceren:

Een nadeel van de superkoelers is dat ze veel lawaai maken. Er wordt immers nogal wat lucht verplaatst door de grote fans waarmee ze zijn uitgerust. Die lucht wordt daarna langs het koellichaam geblazen en dat zorgt ook voor extra resonantie. Dit effect is te vergelijken met het ‘fluiten’ van de wind langs een gebouw op een stormachtige herfstdag. Niemand zal dol zijn op het monotone gezoem van de fans. Dat servers een beetje herrie maken zal weinig mensen interesseren, ze staan meestal toch ver weg op een plaats waar je ze niet hoort. Een PC daarentegen staat op je bureau, in je woonkamer of op je slaapkamer. Plaatsen dus waar het geluidsniveau wél uitmaakt. Reden voor ons dus om het geproduceerde geluidsniveau eens te meten.

Van alle vier de koelers hebben we het geluidsniveau gemeten op 30 cm afstand. De eenheid van het gemeten geluidsniveau is dBA. Geluidsniveau wordt normaal gesproken gemeten in dB. De dB is echter een absolute maat, maar ons gehoor is niet absoluut. Om dat te corrigeren, dus te meten zoals wij het horen, is de dBA geintroduceerd. De A staat voor A-gewogen filter, een filter dat onze gehoorkarakteristiek benadert. Tot zover de korte uitleg, nu de meetresultaten. De resultaten staan weergegeven in onderstaande grafiek.

Anand Lal Shimpi brengt ons een review van de Intel Pentium III 933EB processor die zo rond deze tijd gelanceerd wordt. De core van deze CPU is net als de 1GHz variant gebaseerd op de nieuwe cB0 stepping waardoor hij waarschijnlijk de 1000MHz wel zal trekken. Qua performance scaled de 933MHz versie zoals verwacht mooi tussen de 866 en de 1GHz P3:

The Pentium III 933 is actually a pretty interesting chip in that it should easily be able to make it up to 1GHz and beyond, whereas the 866 wasn't a guarantee since it was based on the old stepping of the Coppermine core (cA2). The Pentium III 933 is essentially a 1GHz part, it operates at the same core voltage, uses the same stepping of the core and should easily be able to hit that 66MHz higher clock frequency. But if you're in the overclocking mood, you'll probably want to opt for a slower Pentium III and take that up to a higher point, such as the Pentium III 600E (100MHz FSB) and push it to 800EB (133MHz FSB). The problem with overclocking something like the 933 is that you can only really successfully do so if you have FSB settings available that lie between 133MHz and 150MHz due to its fairly high clock multiplier (7.0x).

[...] The Pentium IIIs are finally more available than they were a couple of months ago. As of the time of publication you can actually find Pentium III 933 chips online, although at only a few places and at a pretty hefty pricetag. The main point is that you can actually get all the Pentium IIIs (with the exception of the 1GHz parts) if you're really interested in picking one up. While that may sound like a silly thing to boast about, just a couple of months ago picking up anything faster than a 733MHz part was almost unheard of.
