Yahoo heeft de franse wet overtreden, ze hadden op hun site een veiling van nazi-spullen (dat is inderdaad fout), maar nu komt het 'mooie': de aanklaagers eisen dat yahoo.com, een Amerikaanse site, ervoor moet gaan zorgen dat er geen franse surfers op hun site terecht komen... :

Nog opmerkelijker is dat de rechter Yahoo twee maanden de tijd heeft gegeven om Yahoo Auctions onbereikbaar te maken voor Franse internetters. Het veilinggedeelte staat op Yahoo.com, niet op de Franse dochtersite Yahoo.fr.

Yahoo werd vorige week voor de rechter gedaagd door de twee groeperingen. Zij ergeren zich aan het feit dat via Yahoo Auctions nazi-spullen worden aangeboden. Het is in Frankrijk verboden racisme aansporende artikelen te verkopen of tentoon te stellen.

De aanklagers eisten dat het veilinggedeelte van Yahoo helemaal wordt afgesloten, op straffe van een dwangsom van 91.000 dollar. Dit vond de rechter kennelijk te ver gaan.

"De echte vraag is natuurlijk of een Franse rechter kan besluiten over de Engelstalige content op een Amerikaanse site van een Amerikaans bedrijf", verklaarde Christophe Pecnard, advocate van Yahoo, tegenover persbureau AP. Yahoo zegt met geen mogelijkheid te kunnen garanderen dat alles op haar site toelaatbaar is in alle landen ter wereld.

Phoenix76 meldt dat Ricoh komt met CD-RW's die op 10x kunnen gaan herschrijven , dit heeft wel een nadeel: om op deze snelheid te kunnen herschrijven moeten de drives de laatste cd-rw standaard ondersteunen om deze schijfjes te kunnen lezen. De nieuwe toestellen zullen begin juli op de markt komen:

Omdat de huidige cd-RW media niet geschikt zijn voor snelheden hoger dan 8x, zullen de Ricohs gebruik moeten maken van nieuwe schijfjes, die speciaal door de firma werden ontwikkeld. Zowel de toestellen als de cd-RW's zelf zullen aanzienlijk duurder zijn dan hun tragere broertjes.

Hoewel de exacte prijzen nog niet bekend zijn, werd bij de voorstelling gesteld dat de media ongeveer 200 à 300 procent duurder zullen zijn, terwijl de toestellen ongeveer 400 euro (zo'n 880 gulden) zullen kosten.

De race voor meer snelheid heeft wel gevolgen voor de compatibiliteit. Om te kunnen herschrijven aan tienvoudige snelheid moesten de drives de laatste cd-RW standaard volgen, Orange Book Part III, vol.2, versie 1.0.

Deze wijkt aanzienlijk af van de eerste cd-RW standaard, waardoor de nieuwe schijven niet zullen functioneren in oude drives. In essentie ontstaan er zo twee cd-RW types: de eerste ondersteunt 4x, de tweede van 4x tot 10x.

Voor alle tweakers die al een hele dag zonder een GeForce2 review hebben moeten doen heeft Gamers Depot depot de oplossing: een review van de Hercules 3D Prophet II. Dit kaartje ziet er erg strak uit (had ik dat al eerder gezegt? ), maar ondanks de heatsinkjes op het geheugen kwam deze kaart niet ver: 220/250 MHz was het maximum wat deze kaart kon trekken:

While overclocking the card, the highest we were able to reliably get the Prophet II to was a 220Mhz Core with a 350Mhz DDR memory clock. Even though Hercules put heat sinks on the memory chips, I think it's more cosmetic than anything, as DDR doesn't get hot enough to really warrant their use.

[...] Quake 3 was a closer match for the Prophet II and our nVIDIA reference card, with some of the scores only being a couple digits apart. It's interesting to note how the ELSA Gladiac, which is built from a reference card design, didn't quite keep up under most modes with the other two cards.

With native Glide support, 3dfx cards will currently give you the best Unreal Tournament performance under Linux. These are just some of the special features that each company offers with their products, so keep those factors in mind before making a purchase.

GamePC maakt ons blij met een review van de Maxtor DiamondMax 60 harddisk. De schijf heeft 4 platters van elke 15GB groot en draait rustig rond op 5400rpm. Hier een hap uit de conclusie voor je:

Looking at the numbers, we see the 60 series perform almost equally with the 40 series. In both Winbench and Sandra 2000 tests, the 60 series trailed close behind. That was no surprise to us at all since the drive does run at 5400 RPM. But if you look at it from a different angle, this is the fastest 5400 RPM drive we have ever seen. Later we found out that silent store feature can be enabled or disabled to optimize performance. By disabling the feature, the drive supposedly is capable of posting faster numbers, unfortunately Maxtor doesn't leave this up to the consumer to control. Silent store must be enabled or disabled by Maxtor themselves, but they do allow large OEM's to specify which option they want, which means this is most likely a hardware-based issue rather than just a software flag that a program could disable. With its focus on storage capacity rather then pure performance, Maxtor has done well once again. All in all, the average end-user should very satisfied with this drive.

De lui bij Thresh's FiringSquad vonden het wel een goed plan om nog eens te kijken naar de FSAA kwaliteiten van de 3dfx Voodoo5 en de nVidia GeForce GTS. Er werd gebruik gemaakt van driver versie 1.0 voor de V5-5500 en Detonator 5.16 voor de GF2. De oplettende driverfreak weet dat dit allebei al niet meer de nieuwste versies zijn maar we zullen het er mee moeten doen... Na het spelen van Quake III, Need For Speed 5, Descent 3 en Homeworld kwam de reviewer tot de conclusie dat de GeForce2 betere beeldkwaliteit levert op 2x FSAA tov 2x FSAA op de V5-5500, hoewel de snelheid wel achter blijft. 4x FSAA op de V5-5500 blijft het allermooiste:

The results from this set of tests were considerably different from that of last time. Seeing the games in motion side by side is truly the only way to compare the two cards. 2x FSAA comparisons yielded mixed results. The quality difference between the two cards was exceedingly close. We tended to like the GF2 FSAA when compared to the Voodoo 2x. However, if we take into account performance figures, the Voodoo is the clear choice. With 2x FSAA, the Voodoo performs considerably better than the GeForce2 FSAA. When it comes to 4x, the Voodoo has no competition in terms of FSAA quality. Don't take the performance of the cards totally to heart just yet. New drivers are being released at an insane rate. We can't even manage to put out a review before these guys churn out another version.

As for the bleeding issues at 1600x1200 we don't know what is going on there. We couldn't manage to get screen shots of this phenomenon because our capture program would somehow correct for this error, odd but true. Hopefully we will find a way to present this if the new drivers still have this issue. Regardless, the frame rates for both cards are terrible at this resolution, and shouldn't be much of a deciding factor. Another little quirk was the loss of details with the Voodoo in NFS V. The loss of lens flare is probably a driver issue. Who knows, it might have been cleared up already with the new driver version.

Bij The Register hebben ze de prijzen van de Intel Itanium, Intels nieuwe high-end processor, te pakken gekregen. De prijzen vonden zij op een roadmap die bedoeld was voor OEMs (maar niet voor de echte topOEMs als Dell). De prijzen zijn per 1000.

Bij HardOCP is de eerste review te vinden van de Abit KA7-100. Deze is in principe gelijk aan het normale KA7 VIA KX133 Athlon moederbord, maar dan met ATA-100 technologie aan boord. Niet dat er al veel ATA-100 harde schijven zijn, maar dat is een ander verhaal... Over de presentaties van ATA-100 wordt het volgende gezegd:

The features that you get with this board are pretty slick. The OC bios is done with class and is easy to get into and out of. More importantly, it is easy to operate and pretty self-explanatory. The Chipset BIOS is also very well done, having up to the minute tweaking functions that really do work and are not simply something to take up space. Sometimes I thing some mainboard companies add some of that BIOS stuff just to make you think there is something really there, instead of nothing.

Koen Crijns van Hardwareinfo.net heeft een review geschreven van waarschijnlijk de eerste leverbare portable MP3 CD Speler. Koen kreeg een no-name versie maar het apparaat wordt ook wel verkocht onder de naam I-Jam en Genica. De CD speler bleek verder over een goede geluidskwaliteit te beschikken en was ook goed bestendig tegen schokken. Als nadeel werd een goedkope behuizing, het ontbreken van een LCD met MP3 informatie en bitrates tot 192kB genoemd. Over het algemeen bleek hij voor de prijs zeker niet slecht te presteren:

Eindelijk een portable speler die MP3-cd’s kan afspelen. Zoals al gezegd wachtten velen hier al lang op en vandaar de vraag of we deze speler nu meteen moeten aanschaffen.

De speler heeft een aantal voor- en nadelen. Jammer is dat de speler MP3’s met een bitrate hoger dan 192 kbps kan afspelen, dat de speler geen alfanumeriek scherm heeft en dat de behuizing van de speler nogal goedkoop in elkaar zit. Deze nadelen worden gecompenseerd door voordelen: de perfecte schokbestendigheid, de goede geluidskwaliteit (zij het met een andere koptelefoon), de aanwezigheid van een line-out om hem op een stereoset aan te sluiten en vooral natuurlijk de enorm lage prijs. Laten we eerlijk zijn: NLG 350,-- is geen geld voor een apparaat als dit.

Ondanks enkele nadelen ben ik over het algemeen goed te spreken over het product. Misschien is het verstandig om nog even te wachten tot er ook andere MP3 cd-spelers op de markt komen. Pas dan kunnen we zien hoe deze speler presteert ten opzichte van de concurrentie. Als je echter niet langer wilt wachten om een portable MP3 cd-speler aan te schaffen, heb je aan de hier besproken speler beslist geen slechte koop. En nogmaals: de lage prijs van circa NLG 350,-- voor dit apparaat is natuurlijk geweldig.

Matthew Witheiler van AnandTech heeft een artikel geschreven over het overclocken van de GeForce2 GTS. In tegenstelling tot de lui van iXBT-Hardware hebben ze de zaak overigens niet in een vriezer gemikt maar pakte ze het iets normaler aan . Matthew kwam tot de conclusie dat de meeste winst gehaald kan worden door eerst het DDR geheugen maximaal over te klokken en dan pas langzaam de core te uppen totdat de kaart onstabiel wordt.

The best way to overclock you GeForce 2 GTS? As proved above, you will want to play with the memory clock settings until it is as high as it will go. Next, increase the core speed step by step until the card becomes unstable. Unlike previous cards, we no longer want to get the most out of our core as well: it has become secondary.

The next few months should prove to be interesting. Rumors of 5.5 and 5 ns SGRAM chips coming out are starting to be heard, meaning that the card will operate stock at the high DDR memory speed of 400 MHz (363 MHz in the case of the 5.5 ns chips). However, with all that speed to be gained, what will happen next? Naturally, we will push the new chips to the limit by overclocking in an attempt to produce the fastest card possible. Who knows, maybe if we push enough perhaps we can start to get rid of this nagging memory bottleneck. Only overclocking will tell; for the time being.

Volgens dit artikel van The Register zal Intel in het eerste kwartaal van 2001 de Celeron processor laten sterven. Het is de bedoeling dat tegen die tijd de Celeron wordt vervangen door de Tinma 'system-on-the-chip' processor die al komende herfst geïntroduceerd zal worden. De Celeron-familie zal dit jaar nog wel gewoon worden aangevuld met versies tot en met 733MHz.

An Intel roadmap seen by The Register indicates that the Celeron processor will shuffle off its mortal coil towards the end of the first quarter next year, displaced by the system-on-the-chip solution codenamed Timna.

But there's life in the old Celeron dog yet, according to the roadmap. As revealed here yesterday, the 633MHz and 666MHz Celerons will arrive at the end of the month, to be followed in Q3 by a 700MHz Celeron, and in Q4 by a 733MHz Cu128K.

In the third and fourth quarters, the line between the Celeron Cu128K and the Timna, begin to get blurred, with a mixture of both product lines as Intel readies itself to kick the damned thing into touch in Q1 2001.

During Q1 2001, Intel will add Timna processors with increments of 33MHz clock speeds. At the same time, according to the same sources within the microprocessor giant, the business and consumer roadmaps will be merged into one single desktop roadmap.

De Amerikaanse firma Hummer Winblad (HW) investeert $15 miljoen in Napster. Dit is te lezen bij The Register. Het kan een hele steun voor Napster zijn bij alle moeilijkheden die zij de laatste tijd ondervinden.

TgF schrijft: "Bij Napster maken ze zich geen zorgen over al het geneuzel rond rechtzaken. Misschien (lees artikel) gaat het dan toch de goede kant op voor de consument ":

Controversial software developer Napster is being taken over - indirectly - by US venture capital firm Hummer Winblad, it seems.

HW is pumping $15 million into the legally-challenged developer, and has installed co-founder John Hummer on Napster's board and declared a partner, one Hank Barry, as interim CEO to replace departing encumbant Eileen Richardson.

It's not clear why Richardson is off - perhaps she's had it up to here with lawsuits - but we note how interim CEOs tend to become either full-time CEOs (as per Apple) or the company goes down the pan (as per Iridium). Barry is probably at Napster for the duration, then.

VIA is nog lang niet uitgeraasd op de x86-processormarkt. Bij c't is in dit artikel wat info te vinden over de toekomstige processoren van VIA te vinden. De Samuel 1 zal geen L2 cache hebben, wat hem waarschijnlijk wat langzaam maakt, maar de Samuel 2 lost dit op door 64kb L2 cache:

Später im Sommer will VIA die Früchte des Einkaufs der IDT-Prozessorgilde ernten. Dann soll das rührige Designer-Team rund um Glenn Henry den Samuel-Prozessor (ehemals Winchip4) fertig gestellt haben, zunächst quasi als Pilotversion den Samuel 1 mit bis zu 566 MHz (echte MHz und kein P-Rating wie beim Cyrix) mit großem L1-Cache (2x 64K), aber ohne L2. Für Ende des Jahres ist der richtige schwarze Jäger vorgesehen (na gut, der hieß Samiel ...): Der Samuel 2 soll mit 700 MHz Takt und 64 KByte L2-Cache im Markt der Celeronen und Duronen einen Volltreffer landen - just mit der gleichen Cache-Kombination wie AMDs Duron. Beide nutzen dabei den kleinen 64-KByte-L2-Cache als so genannten Victim Cache. Wer da von wem abgeguckt hat, bleibt offen.[break]Maar het meest interessante nieuws moet nog komen. VIA heeft ook wat meer vertelt over de Ezra, de opvolger van Samuel. De Ezra is gebouwd op een 0,13-µm core en begint op 900MHz met 256KByte L2 cache en een 266MHz DDR bus. Het meest verrassende: de Ezra gebruikt SSE-instructies... VIA weer vriendjes met Intel dan?[/break]Interessant wird es dann später im nächsten Jahr, wenn VIAs Ezra (Winchip 5) auf die Bühne tritt: gefertigt in 0,13-µm-Prozess mit 900 MHz und mehr, mit 256 KByte L2, 266 MHz DDR-Bus und ... Intels Streaming SIMD Extension (SSE).

Wat doe je als je de snelste videokaart bezit die op dat moment verkrijgbaar is? Juist, nog sneller maken . Dat dachten ze bij iXBT-labs waarschijnlijk ook, ze hebben daar een GeForce2 in de vriezer gestopt voor een leuk overclock avontuurtje. In de vriezer wou de core snelheid naar 260 MHz en het geheugen kwam op 440 MHz te lopen :

However, the most impressive results were achieved with the local graphics memory overclocking. You can easily notice that the maximum we managed to obtain was about 220MHz (440MHz end frequency). When working at 450MHz end frequency we saw some artifacts such as some visible image distortions. No doubt the curve showing the performance gain achieved during memory overclocking grows much more significantly than in the previous case with graphics core overclocking. We noticed an almost 30% performance gain at 440MHz memory end frequency (note that the graphics core frequency was set to its nominal value - 200MHz). This result proves very illustratively all our theoretical suppositions discussed above. The graphics card based on GeForce2 GTS is more sensitive to the increase of graphics memory frequency than to the increase of graphics core frequency.

[...] Despite the extreme overclocking conditions and the use of a really powerful additional cooling, we have every right to state that the increase of the graphics memory working frequency tells greatly on the performance of GeForce2 GTS based graphics card. This is true even if there were only an ordinary cooling fan used (400MHz end memory frequency proved very easy to achieve). Overclocking the graphics core is also possible, however, it doesn't make very much sense, because even at the nominal of 200MHz GeForce2 GTS can't show all it's capable of because of the narrow local graphics memory bus.

Nevertheless, we would like to point out that at the maximal frequencies set to 260/440MHz the graphics card on NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS performed excellently in Quake3: at 1024x768x32bpp it showed almost 110fps and at 1280x1024x32bpp - 63fps.

Got Apex? heeft een review gemaakt van de Asus CUBX, een prima presterend plankje gebaseerd op de... BX chipset . Naast de BX chipset heeft het plankje een relaxte layout: 6xPCI, 1xISA, 0xAMR, 4xDIMM, FC-PGA socket en een ATA66 controller. De reviewer is erg te spreken over het plankje en geeft het dan ook een 10 ondanks het feit dat een fsb van 133 MHz niet risico vrij is en AGP 4x niet bestaat:

Unfortunately, we do not live in a world that adheres to romantic cliché's. This past year has proven that not all change is good, at least within the computing industry - Just ask Intel about that one. Intel tried to say goodbye to the 440BX and usher in a new toast of the town with its i820 and RAMBUS. RAMBUS and the i820 promptly fell flat on their faces followed by a pitiful attempt to accommodate SDRAM users by using a MTH (Memory Translator Hub). In case you haven't been keeping up on the latest tech news, Intel has since acknowledged that their i820 chipset is flawed. More specifically, the MTH hub is crap. This news surprised few that had actual experience with the board. The i820, when combined with SDRAM, performed atrociously. No doubt if you were to inquire about sales of i820 chipset-based motherboards from OEMs, you would be greeted by chilling glares from the executives.

Dutch Power Cows RC5 verslaafden zullen gemerkt hebben dat de Distributed stats server de afgelopen dagen regelmatig in puin heeft gelegen. Nugget en Decibel melden in een .plan update dat de Onze Lieve Opperkoe aan een dementerende SCSI drive lijdt. De hoogste prioriteit ligt op dit moment bij het bouwen van een backup:

It looks like we're losing the 9gb drive that's in the machine. getting scsi bus errors, timeouts, and system panics. (panics are, we think, because that drive housed some swap space in addition to database data).

We're in the process of doing a backup of all the data to a few off-site machines and then we're going to do some more detailed diagnostics to determine the source of the problem. The symptoms are still a bit sketchy at this point and we don't have a solid theory. Data integrity first, then we'll worry about replacing the faulty hardware.

It's unlikely that we'll bring stats up tonight, most likely it'll be tomorrow at the earliest.

Look for further updates from myself, decibel, or peter as we hone in on the problem.

Decibel: Statsbox update....

The box has definitely degraded... it's been down more than it's been up today. At this point, our priority is just to get a solid backup before we're totally dead in the water.

Based on the few useful error messages from /var/log/messages, this seems to be a virtual memory issue, and we can also tell that one of the drives is failing, so a safe bet would be that the swap partition on that drive is giving us fits. A donated RAID controller should be on it's way, which would solve this *IF* it was in fact the drive that was to blame, but that's a pretty big *IF*. There's also been discussion of flat-out purchasing a box from a major manufacturer, with on-site tech support, etc. But it would take some time before such a box could be put into production, so hopefully we can stabilize statsbox in the meantime.
