Na 4 beta's en 2 release candidates is de final van PHP4.0 eindelijk uitgebracht:

May 22, 2000. It's here, it's ready, and it has the long awaited 'Release' tag. The successor of PHP 3.0 has finally been released. At this point, everyone is encouraged to begin upgrading their systems to use this version.

Hier of daar kun je 'm neerhalen, verder kun je op de site van PHP nog wat meer info vinden. Ook www.zend.com is een goede site over (vooral) PHP4, de officiële press release is er o.a. te vinden.

PHP staat voor PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor en is een extreem handig webscripting taaltje waar oa. Tweakers.net en Fokzine.net op draaien. Op de nieuwe servers bij Vuurwerk zal asap ook PHP4 geinstalleerd worden (als de sysops dat tenminste zien zitten... )

Via CDRInfo.com kwam ik bij deze press release van Plextor's nieuwste IDE brander, de PleXWriter 12/10/32A. Tevens is nu bekend dat deze writer Burn-Proof ondersteunt (wat al links en rechts werd verwacht) waardoor verneukte CD's door buffer underruns niet meer zullen voorkomen, (check hiervoor ook deze review van de 12 speed Sanyo brander). Hieronder het hele bericht:

The PlexWriter 12/10/32A uses the new BURN-Proof Technology. BURN-Proof stands for Buffer UnderRuN proof.
One of the biggest problems when recording CDs is that the media can be destroyed, and this is known as buffer underrun. Buffer underrun is caused when the PC cannot deliver data quickly enough as it records the CD. This is why the CD-Recorder has to store a certain amount of data in the buffer at the start. This buffer steps in when there are small interruptions in the data flow from the PC. Under normal conditions the data buffer should always be capable of containing enough information to guarantee smooth recording. Buffer underruns occur when the content of the data buffer is smaller than the recording capacity of the CD-Recorder.

So how does BURN-Proof work?
Once the CD-Recorder starts recording it constantly checks the buffer status. Just before a buffer underrun occurs the CD-Recorder stops recording from a given location on the CD. In the meantime the CD-Recorder tries to get more information from the PC, and to re-fill the buffer. Once the buffer is refilled the CD-Recorder starts recording again from the exact position where it left off.

The PlexWriter 12/10/32A will be available in the market from beginning of June 2000 as Retail kit and Bulk version.

Maere schrijft: "De overname van SBS6 door UPC gaat niet door uit geldgebrek, het aandeel UPC is de laatste tijd zo gedaald dat ze simpelweg te weinig geld hadden":

Bij Tom's Hardware Guide is een uitgebreide preview te vinden van de Intel Solano chipset (i815). Deze chipset moet eindelijk een waardige opvolger worden voor de 440BX chipset, waar de i820 jammerlijk faalde (zie alle MTH rotzooi). Over de specs heeft Tom het volgende te zeggen:

Basically, i815 is a beefed up 'BX133' for the new millennium with 'optionally' integrated 3D. Its most important spec is of course the support of PC133 SDRAM. Now this is no half-hearted SDRAM support as found in i820/i840, but real native SDRAM support. "RDRAM - no thanks!" is the motto of i815 and it's a pleasure to realize that. As opposed to VIA, Intel knows how to make signal paths short. Therefore i815 clocks its SDRAM synchronously to the front side bus of the CPU. There might be no chance to use PC100 SDRAM with a Pentium III for 133 MHz FSB and you will also not be able to run your SDRAM at PC133-spec after plugging a Celeron into your Solano-board, but the lack of 'asynchronous memory timing' saves gates that would only cost performance and Intel would tell you that it offers other platforms (440BX/ZX, i810) for processors with 66 or 100 MHz FSB anyway. [break]De (voorlopige) conclusie luidt:[/break]There's no doubt, our early i815-sample shows that this chipset will most likely be what i820 should have been. Although the early stage of the Solano-platform could not quite fulfill all of our expectations, it is showing that Intel is on the right track. We expected BX133-performance and that's what Solano should give us at least. Nevertheless, even our beta-Solano was already able to beat i820 in most of the consumer benchmarks. This should be proof enough that i820 and its RDRAM-support are absolutely obsolete in the consumer performance segment. Even i840 will have a hard time against Solano and that should finally raise the question for the basic justification of RDRAM altogether.

Linus Torvalds en Larry Wall (Perl) hebben zich negatief uitgesproken over Napster. Veel open source-aanhangers zijn juist erg positief over Napster, maar zij worden dus niet gesteund door hun 'leiders'. Zoals Torvalds zei:

"Piracy is bad," says Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, when asked about the matter. "Of course you should be able to sue over copyrights. The one good lawsuit in the whole Napster case is the one by Metallica: a suit by the actual authors. While it's probably motivated mostly by money, I can still at least hope that there is a strong feeling of morals there, too."

CNET.com vertelt ons in dit nieuwsbericht dat AMD zijn communicatiedivisie verkocht heeft aan Francisco Partners voor $375 miljoen. De afdeling maakte IC's voor in modems en producten voor DSL-providers. De groep draaide vorig jaar nog een omzet van $168 miljoen; AMD stoot het dan ook niet af vanwege verliesgevendheid, maar omdat zij zich willen concentreren op de processor- en flashmarkt:

AMD's core businesses--PC processors and flash memory chips--are "resource intensive," according to the spokesman, and put AMD up against an "800-pound gorilla--Intel."

"Although communications is rapidly growing, we didn't feel we could compete in a third market area that required a devotion of resources," he said. Bij bizjournals.com is het opmerkelijke nieuws te vinden dat Dell, MS en Intel elk $10 miljoen investeren in een volledig onbekende telecommaatschappij: 2nd Century Communications uit Arlington. De industriegiganten helpen de telecommer om een nationaal netwerk op te zetten. Hier het fantastische nieuws: 2nd Century Communications heeft al 100 (honderd) klanten! Das nog eens een bedrijf waar je wel wat miljoentjes in wilt investeren.

And here's the kicker: The company has only about 100 customers to date. But CEO John Prisco isn't worried about that.

"We only [launched] in January," Prisco says. "We're in a position to expand geographically and carry out our plan to hit 48 cities by next year. ... We have terrific venture firms backing us."

Founded in Tampa, Fla., 2nd Century quietly has been building its operations and installing equipment at telecom switching stations around the country. With little fanfare, 2nd Century moved its headquarters to Arlington last month. About 40 employees work there now, with more than 100 expected to move in by year's end. The Tampa offices will maintain about 200 employees.

The young telecom company does a little bit of everything. It bundles a variety of services, including local and long-distance phone, high-speed Internet, Web applications, email and other applications. Bundling virtually every service a business might need and sending it over one high-speed pipe is a trend being pursued by plenty of local telecom players these days, from old guard phone companies to fiber and Internet firms.

Bij Yahoo!News te lezen dat Compaq en IBM een nieuwe overeenkomst hebben gesloten, waarin besloten ligt dat IBM copper Alpha's gaat maken. IBM heeft deze techniek al wat langer in huis (AMD ook, overigens) en Compaq denkt dat het een significante boost kan geven aan hun high-end business processoren.

``IBM and Compaq have signed an agreement in which IBM will manufacture an Alpha copper chip for Compaq,'' said Compaq spokesman Dick Calandrella. IBM has developed advanced copper chip technology that boosts semiconductors' performance.

Calandrella did not have details about the value of the deal or how many chips will be manufactured. Compaq's line of Alpha chips, used in powerful business computers known as servers, dates back to the days of Digital Equipment Corp., acquired by Compaq in 1998.

Update: Bij ZDNet is te lezen dat IBM volgens een optimistische verwachting aangeeft dat zij in 2001 al 1,2GHz Alpha's kunnen produceren. De nieuwe processor heet de Alpha EV68. Dit maakt het zeer interessant, aangezien die Alpha tegen die tijd sneller zou zijn dan zijn concurrenten (Intel Foster 1.5GHz, Thunderbird 1.5GHz) en bovendien zou kunnen concurreren met de Intel Itanium.

Bij HardwareZone is een review te vinden van de Altec Lansing ATP3 speakerset. De speakers zien er erg duur uit (cool design) maar zijn toch niet te erg aan de prijs: kennelijk gaan ze in het Westen voor $140 over de toonbank. De geluidskwaliteit blijkt ook nog eens erg goed te noemen:

Its spacious, clear, bass-thumping sound output is quite attractive if you ignore the fact you have to be at the satellites level to get the proper sound impact, plus you'll have to give up sheer-volume power for better sounding speakers. This is quite all-right if only one person is personally using the PC and not a group of people or for holding a party using these speakers. It would do well because most PCs are in rooms, rather than in a hall like mine! This set overall deserves the 4-star seal!

Intel heeft de Xeon-familie uitgebreid met een 700MHz versie die zowel verkrijgbaar is in versies met 1MB als 2MB cache. Volgens ZDNet zijn ze niet alleen een stuk sneller maar is de prijs ook flink gezakt:

De nieuwe modellen zijn aanzienlijk sneller én vooral goedkoper dan de vorige Xeons. Die draaiden aan een kloksnelheid van 550 MHz en droegen tot voor kort een prijskaartje van 3.690 dollar. Vermoedelijk gaat de chipfabrikant bij de lancering van de Itanium twee prijsklassen van serverprocessors aanbieden: de goedkopere Xeon's aan een kant en duurdere Itanium's aan de andere. Intel waarschuwt wel dat de nieuwe Xeon-processors aanvankelijk slechts in kleine hoeveelheden verkrijgbaar zullen zijn.

Voorspeld wordt dat 700 MHz niet het hoogtepunt qua kloksnelheid zal zijn voor de Xeon Pentium III. Aangezien de gewone Pentium ondertussen al aan 1 GHz toe is, zal het 0,18-micron ontwerp van de Xeon - nauw verwant aan de desktop PIII - naar alle waarschijnlijkheid een gelijkaardige snelheid aankunnen.

Bij HardwareCentral is een artikel online gekieperd waarin de korte termijn plannen van Intel en AMD eens met elkaar vergeleken worden. Oftewel weer eens een leuk AMD vs. Intel verhaaltje voor de verandering:

This article has provided an overview of the battle plans from both sides of the chipmakers war, but it’s still too early to say how the battles will play out. One of the key issues so far this year has been L2 cache and memory technology, both of which have been leaned on to open up the memory bandwidth bottleneck. The problems in this area can normally be resolved at the cost of a price premium. As time moves on, technological advances will bring price down, so the price/performance trade-off will be less of an issue. It’s been a painful time for RDRAM so far; the introduction of such a high-priced RAM has hurt Intel. With numerous problems experienced with RDRAM chipsets, Rambus has had to try and keep people looking to the future, rather than focussing on its rather messy present.

DDR SDRAM will certainly give current SDRAM a major bandwidth boost, but beyond that the future of SDRAM is uncertain. Although the technology for TDR (Triple Data Rate) RAM does exist, I’ve heard no firm plans for its use in PCs. My recommendations for the coming months is to take advantage of the high-speed battle, and grab a cheap Coppermine or Athlon for a nice price.

De meeste makers van antivirussoftware sloegen vorige week donderdag groot alarm. Er was een nieuwe worm gesignaleerd, een opvolger van de wereldberoemde Love Bug. De voorlichting beangstigde alle computergebruikers en systeembeheerders. De opvolger van de Filippijnse liefdesbrief zou de computer in luttele seconden onklaar kunnen maken.

[...] De PR-activiteiten van de softwarebedrijven en de daarop volgende aandacht van de media worden bekritiseerd. Mikko Hypponen van het Finse F-Secure spreekt van een 'hype' en noemt de publiciteit 'overdreven'.

Softwaremaker Trend Micro deed druk mee aan de verspreiding van het virusnieuws. Het bedrijf steekt nu de hand in eigen boezem. "Deze industrie is gebouwd op hype en waarschuwingen, we hebben niet veel geloofwaardigheid", aldus Dan Schrader van Trend Micro tegen Wired.

Marcel schrijft dat bij Insane Hardware een preview te vinden is van een dual FC-PGA plankje van Asus, de CUR-DLS. Dit plankje is niet echt geschikt als opvolger voor de BP6: een serverworks chipset samen met 2x een 66 MHz PCI slot zegt genoeg denk ik. Desondanks is het wel een heel leuk plankje :

For awhile now, the hardware community has been awaiting the arrival of a mainboard capable of running Dual FC-PGA Processors that would not need the assistance of PowerLeap adaptors. With the demise of Intel's i820 chipset and the lack of i840 mainboards, Asus were left with one alternative when looking for a chipset vendor. VIA were out of the question due to the poor memory bandwidth required to pump the data throught to the Processors so they turned to ServerWorks who are well known in the Server industry for well rounded and robust chipset combinations.

So far the only decent Dual CPU board that we have seen of late has been Abit's BP6, which unfortunately only works with the normal Socket370 Celeron Processors. Attempts have been made to adjust the BP6s taste for CPUs and vendors like PowerLeap have tried to entice the BP6 to accept FC-PGA chips with special adaptors but with out any luck in Dual operation so far. So with the market dying for a new wizz-bang board where you can run anywhere upto 2GHz worth of raw megahertz in the same case, it was upto Asus to some up with a solution.

The Register meldt in dit bericht dat VIA eind deze maand zal starten met het massaproduceren van de KZ133 chipset. Volgens geruchten komen de grote OEM's pas later in juni met Duron en Thundebird systemen. De retail markt zou daarna pas aan de beurt komen. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel:

The KZ133 chipset from Via, a Socket A solution which supports AMD's up-and-coming Thunderbird microprocessor are expected to go into mass production at the end of this month, insiders in Taiwan told The Register today.

But boards using the KZ133 chipset, which has been sampling for three and a half weeks, are likely to head the way of large and loyal AMD and Via customers before they enter the retail market, other sources indicated.

[...] However, if mass production happens at the end of this month, that means that realistically it will be later on in June before systems - probably from the likes of IBM and Gateway - arrive on end users' desktops.

defspace_ meldt dat bij 3D Spotlight een review te vinden is van PC133 geheugen, HSDRAM, gemaakt door Enhanced Memory Systems'. Ze zijn er erg over te spreken ondanks het feit dat de het geheugen niet hoger dan 143 MHz kwam met 2:3:2 als clock timings (150 MHz op 2:2:2 moet kunnen met een Mushkin reepje):

I've been hearing from a lot of people the question of "Why should I choose HSDRAM for my system"? It may be true that another brand of memory will take you to the bus speed that you want, but when you do that it's like a gamble. You may never know what speed you can get from certain brands of memory chips until you plug it into your system.

With HSDRAM, your pretty much guaranteed certain memory speeds. This is why a lot of people choose to purchase the EMS HSDRAM. They know what to expect when they buy the memory.

The HSDRAM has the much touted 4.6ns clock access time to give greater performance and stability at the 133MHz memory speed. Most of the other PC-133 memory that you buy, will most likely come with 3:3:3 suggested clock timings, HSDRAM PC-133 comes with 3:2:2 memory timings.

De 160 pin tellende chip biedt behalve alle normale beeldfunctionaliteit ook functies als zoom, 3D audio en karaoke functionaliteit. Dit alles is te danken aan een ingebouwde 40 MIPS DSP welke verantwoordelijk is voor de meeste extra functies van de chip. [break]Hier nog eens stukkie uit de conclusie:[/break]De Revoy 2200 is een prima DVD speler die bovendien standaard regiovrij is en CD's met MP3 bestanden kan afspelen. De kwaliteit van beeld en geluid is erg goed en kan zich meten met modellen van Sony en Philips in de lagere prijsklasse. Door de standaard toegevoegde waarde van de Revoy 2200 is deze speler zeker het overwegen waard. De werking van het apparaat is zeer goed, en wij hebben geen enkele DVD kunnen ontdekken die niet op deze speler wil werken.

Al met al een prima DVD speler met een zeer goede toegevoegde waarde in de vorm van de zoom, mp3 en regiovrij functionaliteit.

alwinus schrijft: "Ace's hardware haalt een artikel van c't aan waarin wordt germeld dat AMD 40.000 Thunderbirds gaat bakken die gaan werken op de VIA KX133 bordjes. Ook word de reden aangegeven waarom de nieuwe Thunderbirds niet compatibel zijn met met de huidige plankjes. Uitleg ontbreekt nog echter.":

While I am not very competent in reading the language of Goëthe (=German), I found some interesting tidbits in this c't article.

First of all, it appears that the Thunderbird works with a "push and Pull" signal and the K75 works with a "Open Drain" signal. Feel free to enlighten me about this signal stuff, but it seems to be the reason why the Thunderbird does not work together with VIA's KX133 which only supports "Open Drain". AMD will produce 40.000 thunderbirds with "open drain" signaling, which will work happily together with VIA's KX-133 chipset, to make the motherboard manufacturers happy. AMD, we want some of those on the DIY market too .

C't also states that whether the rumours that certain boards with the KX-133 (Abit, ASUS) will nevertheless work (thanks to a bios upgrade) remains to be seen, and will create a lot of confusion. [break] Verder in het artikel nog wat info over de Ali DDR chipset voor de Athlon; volgende maand zou het bedrijf de chipset presenteren. VIA ziet nu meer kans in de Pentium III markt en werkt hard aan haar Pro266 chipset met ondersteuning voor 133MHz DDR SDRAM:[/break] ALI, the other chipset company, will present a Socket A/Slot A chipset in june, and it is rumoured that this chipset will support DDR SDRAM!!

VIA seems to focus on the PIII market, and is readying a PRO266 chipset with support for 133 MHz DDR SDRAM (2.1 GB/s) for the PIII market. Ace's readers know that DDR SDRAM will not push the PIII's performance much higher, as the PIII's memory performance is crippled by the 133 MHZ GTL+ bus. As you can read here, 133 MHz SDRAM combined with the 200 Mhz EV6 bus delivers as much bandwidth as a 133 MHZ GTL+ FSB does with DDR SDRAM!

Bij Gamers Depot is een review te vinden van de Altec Lansing ADA880 speakerset. Ze waren niet echt te spreken over deze set, 300 dollar voor iets wat van redelijke kwaliteit is, is (veel) te duur volgens hun:

The remote control is cool, and you'd better like it because it's the only way to change the surround levels. You need the remote to change the rear and center channel volume levels. You'll notice from our pictures there is not a true center channel speaker nor signal. When in surround mode and adjusting more power to the center channel you are actually adjusting the two front left and right speaker volumes. This sounds like phantom or simulated mode to me NOT Dolby Surround Pro-Logic. In my opinion this corrupts what is considered a surround system or not. I don't mean to rip on Altec or anything but let's get it right, I wish companies wouldn't advertise systems by throwing all these terms at you like Dolby, Surround, Theater System etc, unless it's true!

Overall the 880s sound like a typical mid-fi system which should cost well under $200.00.

At their current price of $300.00, there is no way we can give them a great recommendation, when there are so many other speakers around that kick the crap out of the 880s. *cough* Klipsch Promedia's *cough*.

In Anand's vorige artikel had je misschien al hun gebruikelijke stapel benchmarks gemist, treur niet want nu hebben ze een tweede deel geschreven waar ze genoeg benchmarks in hebben zitten . In tegenstelling tot hun vorige artikel over Rambus komt dit niet over als reclame: ze zien pas hoop voor Rambus zodra DDR het niet meer haalt, iets wat waarschijnlijk nog wel enkele jaren kan duren:

There is no question to it, DDR SDRAM will be the memory technology of choice upon its introduction in both Pentium III and Athlon systems later this year. The real question is, how long will DDR SDRAM be around in the future?
