We had expected these CPUs to cost at least twice as much as their Pentium III brethren, but after consulting industry contacts we were amazed to find out that the price premium for Pentium III Xeon CPUs with 256 KB L2-cache is a mere $50-$100,- which makes them just as affordable as a normal Pentium III.
The other components in the system required to run these CPUs do come at a price premium, though. The Iwill DCA-200 motherboard is a pinnacle of stability and performance, but doesn’t come cheap. The same applies to the 256 MB of ECC PC800 RDRAM; it is fast, very fast even, we’ve never seen memory scores this high, but will set you back considerably.
[break]Nog iets over de snelheid en de doelen waarvoor het systeem gebruikt zou moeten worden:[/break] Overall a dual Pentium III Xeon configuration similar to the one we’ve tested will only really be able to show its top-of-the-line performance if challenged to do so. Using this system to browse the web, type out your documents or even as a small company's mailserver will only tap a few percent of its performance, and is really a waste of money and capacity.
However, if you’re into CAD/CAM, 3D graphics, high end programming, maintain large databases or just want a top-notch workstation, without being restricted to running Windows, but also wish to have the capacity to run Unix, Solaris or Linux, then this system might well fit your needs. It’s blistering fast, has mindboggling 3D graphics, stunning harddisk throughput, and CPU horsepower to spare. It simply is one of the fastest machines we’ve had the pleasure of exchanging disks with, period.
