During the hardware keynote of WWDC, which ended just minutes ago, Apple demonstrated a dual-processor G4 Power Mac running Mac OS X. Of note to developers is that Cocoa/Carbon applications do not need to be changed in any way to take advantage of multi-processors. Benchmark demonstrations ran roughly twice as fast on the dual-G4 system compared to the single-G4 Power Mac that was on stage. No mention was given as to when these multiprocessor G4s would ship, although it was stressed that it would not be happening any time soon but that they would definitely be out by next year's WWDC.

Vendex KBB en KPN hebben vandaag een overeenkomst gesloten voor grootschalige introductie en verkoop van breedband-internet (ADSL) in Nederland. Deze breedbandtechniek, die door KPN onder de naam Mxstream op de markt wordt gebracht, maakt het mogelijk om over de normale telefoonlijn supersnel bewegend beeld te versturen en te ontvangen, waarmee televisiekwaliteit via internet binnen bereik komt. Met name de snelle en permanente toegang tot het internet is zeer aantrekkelijk voor de consument.

Vendex KBB zal dit geavanceerde, nieuwe product aanbieden in meer dan 500 winkels van onder meer Vroom & Dreesmann Warenhuizen, Dixons, Kijkshop, Modern Electronics, Dynabyte, Dixtone en America Today. BIj AnandTech is een aardig artikel online gezet waarin Ultra ATA/33 en 66 harde schijven vergeleken worden. Er worden bergen benchmarks gedraaid (25 pagina's benchmarks!)onder Windows 98SE, NT4 en 2000. Hieruit blijkt dat Ultra TA/66 op dit moment nog niet zo'n snelheidsvoordeel heeft, maar dat het in de toekomst belangrijker kan worden:

In general, if you are still using an Ultra ATA/33 system, with the current generation of drives there is not really an incentive yet to switch over to the new interface. We do expect the forthcoming drives to start utilizing the increased bandwidth the Ultra ATA/66 interface affords and defiantly see the need for its implementation. However, as you can see from our testing, there is currently little performance benefit using one interface standard over the other.

As mentioned previously, the Ultra ATA/66 specification should be viewed more as a way of allowing room for growth in hard drive transfer bandwidth, than it is for a current performance booster. To put it in simpler terms, it’s akin to adding 4 more lanes to a highway that currently is able to handle 5000 cars per hour. If that highway only has a current peak usage of 5000 cars per hour, and all the cars are able to maintain a 60 MPH speed, then the addition of those extra 4 lanes will not be immediately noticeable. But in 5 years time, when the traffic has doubled to 10,000 cars per hour, the average speed will be able to be maintained at 60 MPH instead of reducing the traffic flow to a crawl had the changes not been previously made.

Although there are other factors in traffic flow patterns besides the number of lanes, and hard drive interfaces are not highways, we hope that you can see the point in the analogy. While the Ultra ATA/66 specification is definitely needed, and in some limited situations, you can currently see a slight benefit, it is definitely more of a technology that allows room for growth in the future than it is for offering enormous performance benefits today.

Ars Technica heeft een review online geknikkerd van de K7V, het welbekende KX133 mobo van Asus. Zij waren onder de indruk van het bord, vooral omdat het vaak sneller uit de test kwam dan de Abit KA7. Aan de andere kant heeft de KA7 meer overclocking features en 6 PCI-sloten.

When I first got the K7M, I was impressed by it, but I wasn't floored (in fact, I wrote a semi-negative view of the board, while most everyone else was busy spooging all over it). A little bit of time and a lot of BIOS maturity made the board a winner. To be honest, I kind of expected that same thing to happen this time around. When I first started working with the K7V, I was fairly impressed from the get go. The 1005 rev BIOS came just in the nick of time, and I've been left with impressive performance, impressive stability, and a fairly impressive feature-set. From my testing, CPU bus overclocking abilities are a limitation, but that's always been the case with Athlon motherboards. Even so, the KA7 would go all the way up to 803MHz, whereas the K7V was pretty much limited to 773MHz. Of course, going back to compare scores, you'll see that CPU speed isn't everything.

Het artikel lijkt verder meer op een MS persbericht dan op een preview, maar we zullen niet te kritisch zijn.

De Telegraaf meldt dat UPC over het eerste kwartaal een miljard gulden verlies heeft weten te boeken, 7 keer meer dan over de eerste 3 maanden van vorig jaar. Toch is de directie tevreden vanwege de sterke groei van het aantal abonnees. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het nieuwsbericht:

Kabelconcern UPC (United Pan-Europe Communications) heeft in het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar het nettoverlies zien oplopen tot ruim ƒ1 miljard. Dat is ruim zeven keer het verlies dat over de eerste drie maanden van vorig jaar moest worden geïncasseerd.

De omzet steeg het afgelopen kwartaal tot ƒ441 miljoen. Dat is vergeleken met dezelfde periode van vorig jaar een stijging met 197%. Ten opzichte van het laatste kwartaal van vorig jaar is er sprake van een stijging met 16,9%, zo bleek gisteren.

Toch toonde topman Mark Schneider zich gisteren dik tevreden met het resultaat over het afgelopen kwartaal. De groei van het aantal abonnees was veel groter dan verwacht. Ook de distributie-activiteiten (van onder meer kabel-tv) ontwikkelden zich gunstig. Die zouden richting zwarte cijfers gaan (voor aftrek van rente en afschrijvingen). Kortom, het was een uitstekend verlopen periode, zo benadrukte hij.

Zijn optimistische uitlatingen zijn gebaseerd op het feit dat de rekenmeesters van zijn concern uitgaan van de zogeheten EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation, dus het resultaat waarin rente, belastingen, afschrijvingen en afboeking van goodwill niet zijn verwerkt).

Overclockers WorkBench heeft zo te zien 2 screenshots kunnen jatten van een powerpoint presentatie waar Abit laat zien wat de opvolger van de KA7, de KA7-100, in huis heeft. Er zitten zo te zien geen nieuwe features op, het enige wat anders is, is de toevoeging van een hele lading FSB's: van 100 naar 184 MHz in stapjes van 1 MHz (alleen de eerste 20 zijn nuttig, verder kan de EV6 bus toch niet):

Bij Tweak3D heeft men een review geschreven van de Elsa Gladiac, één van de eerste GeForce 2 GTS kaarten. De Elsa volgt het nVidia reference design. Over de performance waren ze bij Tweak3D zeer goed te spreken:

The Gladiac performed extremely well, and that's considering that it's currently the fastest card on the market. What more can we ask for? You will appreciate the new features that help the card spew out polygons faster than you can say "I can't believe it's not butter." Game performance is playable all the way up to 1280x1024 and usually higher on most games.

FSAA currently works but not what it should be like. FSAA is currently in the drivers, but this does not mean that it functions properly. The UT screenshots are evidence of this.

Even though Elsa didn't differentiate the design of the card much from the nVIDIA reference board, the drivers were extensive and the card performed very well. Being the first version of the Gladiac, it also overclocked very well. And proceeding cards may perform even better...[break]Ook VIAHardware heeft deze kaart besproken. Gijs Graafland van Name Space ziet zichzelf als een typische representant van de nieuwe economie die het opneemt tegen de machtige oude economie. David (Name Space) contra Goliath (Unilever) kortom. Unilever snapt volgens hem niets van internet, en de rechters al helemaal niet.

Een rechter bepaalde onlangs dat Name Space 21 domeinnamen – zoals Glorix.nl – moet overdragen aan multinational Unilever. Name Space is hiervan weinig onder de indruk en kiest bij monde van Gijs Graafland frontaal de aanval op zowel de oude economie als de in zijn ogen onkundige rechters.

Volgens Graafland is het technisch onmogelijk te voldoen aan de door de rechter gestelde eisen. "We zijn drie weken bezig geweest met die lui van Unilever, maar zij snappen het allemaal niet. Ik heb geen zin om voor cursusleider te spelen. Ze zoeken het maar uit." Een van de problemen is dat de namen aan een provider in Engeland moeten worden overgedragen, dit stuit volgens Graafland op onoverkomelijke problemen.

WebWereld meldt dat Microsoft volgende week een patch zal releasen om haar mailproggie Outlook dicht te spijkeren voor gevaarlijke mail attachments. Na het installen van de update is het namelijk niet meer mogelijk om meegestuurde files met de extensie .exe en .vbs te openen. Ook zal er een waarschuwing worden gegeven als er mail naar mensen uit je adressbook wordt gestuurd om zo verspreiding van dergelijke virussen te voorkomen.

Deze is bedoeld voor Outlook 98 en Outlook 2000 Service Release 1. De oplossing voor het veiligheidslek is nogal drastisch. Wie zijn mailprogramma update is namelijk niet meer in staat potentieel gevaarlijke bestanden (zoals .exe en .vbs) via Outlook te openen of op te slaan. Wie dergelijke bestanden toch wil verspreiden, dient dus een andere oplossing te zoeken, zoals een intranet of fileserver.

Kenners betitelen deze maatregel als een overkill. Het kind wordt met het badwater weggegooid, zo vinden zij. Meer tevreden zijn ze over andere veiligheidsmaatregelen, zoals extra waarschuwingen die een gebruiker krijgt als er toch iets mis gaat met zijn mailprogramma.

Outlook zal voortaan waarschuwen als er zomaar berichten worden verstuurd via het adresboek. De gebruiker moet dan eerst toestemming geven. Juist het ongevraagde gebruik van het adresboek geeft virussen als I Love You de kans zich razendsnel te verspreiden.

De update is naar verwachting volgende week ter download beschikbaar.

Matsushita zal volgende maand in Japan haar DVD-RAM drive introduceren die gebruik maakt van de tweede generatie DVD-RAM techniek. Op de nieuwere DVD schijfjes kun je dan 4.7GB aan gegevens wegschrijven . De prijs is wel wat hoog, namelijk 2300 dollar voor de consumer versie. Een maand later zal Matsushita interne en externe PC versies introduceren die aanzienlijk goedkoper zijn; 580 en 684 dollar.

If today's CD-ROM disc capacity of 650MB is too meager for your storage needs, you might watch for some upcoming drives from Japan's Matsushita Electric Industrial Company. It promises a whopping 9.4GB of storage on a double-sided disc.

The company plans to launch this summer a line of high-capacity drives under its Panasonic brand. The products are based on a second-generation version of the DVD-RAM format.

The DVD-RAM technology is still battling for market acceptance against increasingly popular CD-Recordable and CD-Rewritable drives. The company hopes a new consumer video optical disc recorder arriving in June and two new drives for the PC arriving in July will turn the tide.

First-generation DVD-RAM discs are capable of holding 2.6GB of data per side to give a maximum capacity of 5.2GB on a double-sided disc. The second-generation format extends this to 4.7GB of storage per side to produce a maximum capacity of 9.4GB per disc. However, Panasonic will initially produce only single-sided discs.

"We aim to promote DVD-RAM as the de facto industry standard in consumer DVD video recording. We have no plan to make it compatible with DVD-RW recorders," a Matsushita official said. Osaka-based Matsushita aims to produce 4,000 units a month and market the machines in the United States later this year. A launch schedule for Europe has not been decided, it said. Industry specialists see Matsushita's entry as the start of a "format war" in DVD recording systems that are seen as successors to the ubiquitous video cassette recorder.

Riva3D heeft een primeur met de eerste review van de Hercules 3D Prophet II GeForce2 GTS kaart. Ondanks de heatsinks die zijn aangebracht op elke geheugen chip bleek de kaart slechts op maximaal op 210/350 MHz te willen draaien. De Prophet II bleek wel sneller als nVidia's reference plank en hij wist de V7700 van Asus af en toe ook te verslaan:

The Hercules/Guillemot card was for the most part everything I expected: a good, solid product. The driver installation was a snap, everything functioned as it should, and I encountered no problems in testing and playing games. I was a bit disappointed in the low-overclocking threshold, but again, this could be particular to the card I received, and not an indication of what you should expect.
The lack of a game bundle didn't bother me either, especially with PowerDVD and video out standard on the Prophet 2. You do get 640x480 and 800x600 output for full resolution DVD playback. Besides, most game bundles these days are pretty lame for the most part, so unless another company offers a truly blockbuster title with their card, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better deal.

Coming in the second half of 2000, Gigabyte will be shipping three main types of AMD Athlon motherboards. There will be several models based on VIA's KM133 and KZ133, the descendents of VIA's KX133 chipset. These motherboards will use the Socket A CPU connector, which will coincide with AMD's move to producing only Socket A based Athlons. AMD is moving to the Socket A form factor because it saves several dollars per CPU in manufacturing costs.

Lorn schrijft dat de mensen in Europa en Amerika mazzel hebben: in 'onze' versie van de PS2 komt een uitbreidingssleuf waarin een netwerkkaart of harde schijf past:

Onderaan de console komt een uitbreidingssleuf waarin de gebruiker een harde schijf van 3,5 inch of een netwerkkaart kan steken. Dit zal het mogelijk maken om via een breedbandverbinding te gamen of gegevens - zoals films - binnen te halen. Beide accessoires zullen apart worden verkocht. De prijzen van die componenten zijn vooralsnog niet bekend.

De firma heeft ook zijn streefcijfers voor de verkoop van de PlayStation 2 vrijgegeven. After all, this is about the twentieth Coppermine processor that's come across my desk for review, and frankly, there's not much more to say about these chips. Thankfully, Intel has finally added something new to the FC-PGA form factor for us to talk about, a new core stepping. nto 1100 or 1200 MHz. The cB0 stepping could be the helping hand Intel needs to keep the Coppermine family alive and going on the ultra-fast CPU product cycle until the Williamette chips show their faces in a few months.

The 866EB chip is the fastest flip-chip processor we've reviewed as of yet, and is currently the fastest shipping Pentium III from Intel right now. Of course, that will change in a few weeks time with the full-fledged shipping of the 933EB and 1000EB chips, but for now it's top dog. The 866EB, as the name implies, runs off a 133 MHz front side bus, meaning it's got a 6.5x multiplier backing it up. We've proven that 133 MHz FSB processors do give better overall performance that their 100 MHz bus brethren (i.e an 866 chip at 133 FSB will outperform a 900 MHz chip at 100 FSB). Add into the mix that now we've got VIA's Apollo Pro 133A platform (we don't consider I820 a viable chipset) to run these processors on, 133 FSB is getting more and more popular.

[...] On our VIA testbed, we were easily able to clock the chip up to 150 MHz FSB, finalizing a clock speed of 975 MHz. We didn't notice any stability problems or heat issues at that speed, so naturally we wanted to see if it could go further. No no, it seems 150 MHz FSB is the fastest our testbed motherboard could go. We wouldn't be at all surprised if the chip can go beyond 1 GHz without problems by going above 155 MHz FSB, which many newer VIA (and even some BX) motherboards support.

So its FAB23, Week 19! Inside this baby I've found a core with 800MHz and Motorola Cache Chips with Ending '350'. So these are 'normal' Cache Chips for an Athlon 700. I have no problem to clock it up to 950MHz using 1.85V and L2 divider 1/3.

Mogelijk (ik verzin dit ter plekke) heeft de grote vraag naar Athlon processors AMD ertoe gebracht om toch Athlons in Dresden te produceren. Ik kan me voorstellen dat AMD het zichzelf niet kan permitteren om op deze wijze marktaandeel ongewonnen te laten, terwijl het een nieuwe fabriek voor produktie gereed heeft staan.

Robszombie passde ons dit mailtje waarmee Sonera zich tegenover haar klanten denkt te excuseren voor de herhaaldelijke beveiligingsbloopers die het bedrijf recentelijk heeft begaan. Begin april kwamen de passwords van Sonera gebruikers in de goot te liggen en vorige week kreeg men het voor elkaar om de sites van 250 webhosting klanten kwijt te maken:

Geachte abonnee,

In dit bericht staan wij nog even stil bij de inbraak op onze systemen, die begin april via de media aan de kaak werd gesteld. Hierbij willen wij benadrukken dat, anders dan volgend uit de berichtgeving in de media, de computerkrakers met veel moeite zijn binnengekomen op ons netwerk. Het is een misverstand dat hierbij sprake was van beveiligingsgaten. Men is met een "digitale koevoet" binnengekomen.

Het vormde aanleiding voor Sonera om een aantal systemen tijdelijk buiten gebruik te stellen en aangifte te doen bij de politie. Zoals reeds in het persbericht vermeld is, is er nooit sprake van geweest dat de computerkrakers volledige controle over het Sonera netwerk hebben gehad. Ook is er geen enkele aanwijzing dat er toegang is verkregen tot het internationale netwerk en dat er misbruik is gemaakt van uw gegevens. Het politie-onderzoek naar de daders is op het moment nog in volle gang.

Sonera beseft dat deze inbraak een inbreuk heeft opgeleverd in het vertrouwen van haar klanten en zal alles in het werk stellen om dat te herstellen. Zo zijn er extra beveiligings- maatregelen getroffen en zal een extern bureau tezijnertijd een audit doen.

De audit heeft enerzijds tot doel om de beveiliging van ons netwerk te toetsen en zal anderzijds dienen om de organisatie van de beveiliging te optimaliseren. Mocht er nieuws zijn op dit gebied dan zullen wij u dat via de geëigende kanalen berichten.

Het belang van beveiliging van informatie zal de komende jaren toenemen, aangezien het internet een open netwerk is en er steeds meer mensen met verschillende motieven gebruik van maken. Een recent voorbeeld van misbruik vormt het "I love you-virus" dat wereldwijd grote schade heeft aangericht. Onafhankelijk van de veiligheid van het netwerk van een internet service provider (ISP) blijft het internet namelijk een 'open' computernetwerk met miljoenen gebruikers. Een ISP kan aan deze openheid van het internet niets veranderen. Dit neemt niet weg dat wij alles in het werk zullen stellen om inbraken op onze eigen systemen in de toekomst te voorkomen.

Als u uw informatie veilig over het internet wilt versturen, kunt u daarvoor gebruik maken van encryptie. Encryptie, oftewel versleuteling, is een techniek die "sniffers" (netwerk afluister apparatuur) kansloos maakt, omdat de informatie zo gecodeerd is, dat het lezen daarvan niet mogelijk is zonder in het bezit te zijn van de sleutel. Een bekend encryptie programma is PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). Sommige encryptie-software is gratis te downloaden op het internet, bijvoorbeeld op http://www.ZoneAlarm.com en makkelijk zelf te installeren.

€nrico bracht ons op de hoogte van het prettige nieuws dat HighPoint nieuwe Win98 en Win2000 drivertjes voor de HPT366 controller heeft gereleased. Deze ATA66 controller is onder andere terug te vinden op de popi BP6, BE6 en BE6-II planken van Abit. De nieuwe v1.25 drivers kun je wegtanken van BP6.com:

Voor de trotse bezitters van een BX6-II heeft )rtep de melding dat Abit een nieuw BIOS voor deze plank heeft uitgebracht. De laatste BX6.2 BIOS update dateerde al weer van 8 december vorig jaar, maar daar kan nu dus een vers QR BIOS voor naar beneden gehaald worden:

Processor specialist Paul DeMone van RealWorld Technologies heeft een interessant artikel gebouwd rond de geschiedenis van de PowerPC architectuur en de performance van PPC processors in vergelijking met x86 RISC CPU's. Uit de cijfers in het artikel blijkt dat het PowerPC platform over de afgelopen jaren de leiding heeft kwijtgeraakt in zowel de MHz, SPECint als SPECfp race. Het verschil in de prestaties van de snelste x86 en PPC processors is vooral het afgelopen jaar sterk toegenomen door de zware concurrrentie tussen AMD en Intel. Paul denkt dat de komst van de G4+ (G4 met on-die L2 cache, een langere pipeline en 2 extra integer units) weinig verandering in deze situatie zal brengen. Apple zal volgens hem door achterblijvende PPC architectuur achter blijven lopen op het gebied van kloksnelheid en prestaties:

The immediate question that should be posed is whether or not this performance gap will affect the viability of the Macintosh as a desktop computing standard. The answer is, probably not. The current performance bonanza in the x86 world is far more driven by the egos and cutthroat competitive nature of Intel and AMD than any perceived need by computer buyers. Although the bleeding edge CAD and gaming enthusiast markets will embrace any level of performance with open arms, the fact is that majority of computer uses can be happily serviced by x86 processors in the 600 MHz range. The key for Apple is the tall task of convincing the great, unwashed masses of computer buyers to not automatically worship at the altar of clock frequency.

Apple will likely need to continue to concentrate on marketing their wares on the basis of industrial design aesthetics and intangible factors such as design "coolness", while shying away from quantifiable characteristics like clock rate, bandwidth and performance (or price). A key competitive advantage of PowerPC is its relatively low power consumption, which stands in sharp contrast to the leading x86 designs that can dissipate up to a blistering 65 Watts. Apple must ruthlessly exploit this advantage to create unique form factors employing passive cooling techniques for desktop computers that are simultaneously appealing, compact, quiet, and difficult for x86 system manufacturers to duplicate (aside from look-and-feel lawsuits). The combination of unique form, a stubbornly loyal user base, and the simple fact that PowerPC may lag x86 performance but is still sufficient for the vast majority of applications, should allow Apple to keep most of its tiny market share intact over the next few turbulent years. However, Apple should drop silly and misleading ads campaigns like the G4-as-supercomputer or Pentium-as-snail, it just doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Indeed, the less attention Apple draws to performance comparisons the better.

The Register bericht dat 1GHz Pentium III tweeënhalf maand na release nog steeds nauwelijks leverbaar is. De processors worden momenteel alleen aan Dell, Hewlett Packard en IBM geleverd, maar ook bij deze bedrijven staan de supplies van 1GHz PIII's vrijwel droog:

But now it appears that even Intel's top distributor, sorry customer, the Dell Corp, are finding the pesky chips as rare as hen's teeth.

Far from flagging the 1GHz Pentium III Coppermine with a "special edition" button on its site, the Dell Corp now seems not to give the option of any Intel processors running over 866MHz (if we're wrong, we're sure you'll tell us).

Instead, moles close to the chip manufacturer's plans telling us, Intel is readying itself for another round of Gigahurts madness near the end of the month, partially in a bid to attempt to queer Cheapzilla (AMD's) pitch with its Thunderbirds and Durons. Then we can expect a 133MHz GHz Pentium III announcement but don't expect a rush of machines to come trundling off the fab production line. These, too, will be in ultra-short supply for some time to come.

EBN Online schrijft dat Philips haar spraakherkennings engine heeft geport naar een DSP chip van Lucent. De technologie kan gebruikt worden in mobiele telefoons en is momenteel in staat om de engelse taal en een aantal Europese en Aziatische talen te herkennen:

The speech recognition engine, developed by subsidiary Philips Speech Processing, will be aimed at mobile wireless products like cell phones for handheld and automotive applications, where voice-activated calling would simplify operation. Philips' technology has been integrated into the DSP1629 chip from Lucent's Microelectronics Group, which additionally features Lucent's acoustic echo and line echo cancellation, adaptive noise suppression, simultaneous voice and data modem, and voice memo recording.

The chip has been designed to recognize English and several European and Asian languages as it makes its way into the telematics market.

EETimes meldt dat Silicon Graphics een nieuwe serie Visual Workstations heeft aangekondigd. De machines ondersteunen specifiek Windows NT en Linux (maar ik neem aan ook ieder ander i386 compatible OS) en zijn gebaseerd op standaard Intel hardware. De specificaties komen mij afgezien van de professionele VPro 3D kaart weinig indrukwekkend over. De processor bestaat uit een PIII 667-800 of PIII Xeon 733-800 en wordt gecomplementeerd met minimaal 128MB SDRAM of Rambus geheugen. De systemen zijn verkrijgbaar voor prijzen vanaf $2.725:

Silicon Graphics (Mountain View, Calif.) wants to build on its success with Linux servers by moving to Linux workstations, said Ujesh Desai, the company's IA-32 workstation line manager. Leading EDA vendors have already started to port their tools to Linux to meet growing demand in the engineering community, the company said.

SGI is pointing its Linux and Windows NT-based systems in different directions. "Windows NT is good for graphics and PCB [pc-board] layout, but is not scalable like Unix and Linux, and it is best suited for small, single-user jobs," said Shing Pan, EDA Marketing manager for Silicon Graphics.

Linux offers the price/performance advantage of Windows with the reliability of Unix, Pan said. And EDA application vendors find it easy to move to Linux, he said, provided there is a base of users. Silicon Graphics is offering those users both scaled-down and souped-up Linux machines.

Slightly off-topic maar wel interessant: MindTwist liet ons via de nieuws submit weten dat SGI alle hardware documentatie van de Indy heeft vrijgegeven. Deze kun je hier in postscript formaat naar binnen trekken.

EETimes schrijft dat Motorola een doorbraak heeft bereikt in de ontwikkeling van magnetoresistive random-access memories. Onlangs werd een 512-bit MRAM geheugen element gedemonstreerd. Deze MRAMs hebben een kleinere cel grootte dan normale DRAMs, maar zijn qua prestaties vergelijkbaar met SRAM chips. Motorola denkt dat de technologie in 2005 geschikt is voor commerciële toepassingen:

Saied Tehrani, the MRAM program manager at Motorola Labs, based here, said he expects embedded MRAM arrays to be in the sampling stage by 2004, and fully qualified in products by the following year.

MRAMs are non-volatile memories with fast access times and a small cell size. With no detectable wear-out mechanism and no need for charge pumps to erase or write the bits, MRAM is being touted as a replacement for flash and for DRAM. Tehrani called it "the universal memory."

The Motorola demonstrator array exhibits read and program access times of just 24 nanoseconds, putting MRAMs in roughly the same speed bin as slow static RAMs and making them much faster than DRAMs. The write times range, Tehrani said.

Ace's Hardware heeft meer meldingen gekregen van Athlons met snel 2,9ns (345MHz) Cache chips. In één geval betrof het een partij van 20 Athlon 750's met een 950 core en weeknummer 17. Een ander geval gaat over een week 18 Athlon 700 met 2,9ns cache chips:

After peaking under the black plastic cover I could see it was a .18 core, which was relief to me. I was thinking I had a "remarked" processor. After I finally got it cracked open it turns out it has a 700 core with 2.9ns NEC cache. I have it running at 850Mhz 2/5 cache 1.8v

[...] The Athlon 750s typically have 3.3ns SRAMs at a 2/5 divider, while the 900s use 3.3ns chips and a 1/3 divider. This is not the case, however, with these new Athlons. They are being shipped with much faster SRAMs, which should make them excellent overclockers.

Uncle Steve heeft op de Apple World Wide Developers Conference bekend gemaakt dat de final van MacOS X, die oorspronkelijk gepland stond voor de zomer, is gedelayed tot januari. Wel wordt er deze zomer een publieke beta gereleased. Developer Preview 4 CD's wordt inmiddels onder developers verspreid. Onderstaande info is afkomstig van MacNN.com:

Mac OS X Final delayed - Jobs announced that a public beta of Mac OS X will be available this summer, contrary to the announcements at Macworld SF where it was said that a final version would be ready. The final version is now due in January 2001. This was originally when Apple was planning to begin pre-installing the title on all of its Macs.

[...] DP4 to developers - Apple has seeded Mac OS X DP4 to developers, after releasing it internally last month. Jobs demonstrated the new version and illustrated how it is more "Mac-like" than DP3. Jobs dubbed DP4 as being "developer complete," with 98% of APIs and tools that developers having been implemented. Additionally, OS X will ship with Java 2; 90% of such tools for developers are included with DP4. A new QuickTime Player is also included; gone is the sliding channels drawer, which has been replaced by a TV button. A full Carbon version of Internet Explorer 5 (see blurb below) will also be included on the DP4 CD. Additionally, a DP4 manual was available to developers. More than 200 developers have committed to delivering products for Mac OS X since early January.
