Insane Hardware brengt ons de info over 2 nieuwe Asus plankjes, de CUSL2 en de A7V. De CUSL krijgt de i815 chipset aan boord en is geschikt voor FC-PGA processors. Een zeer leuke feature van dit model is dat dat de CPU automagisch zal worden vertraagd als hij te warm wordt. Een leuk ingebouwde valnet voor de beginnende (of slechte ) overclocker. Verder biedt hij PC133 en ATA/100 support:

The mobo actually detects the temperature on the internal temp diode in the processor and decreases the the core frequency if the processor temperature goes over a certain level. Bij CDRInfo.com kun je wat info lezen over de toekomstplannen die de maker van CloneCD heeft met zijn popie brandproggie. Versie 3.x die in november zou moeten verschijnen zal een hele hoop nieuwe features en opties moeten bevatten. Daarnaast wordt er ook wat info vrij gegeven over VirtualCloneCD, CloneDVD en RegionKiller:

Here are the plans for CloneCD 3.x (and note - these are "plans". No promises!):

Clone 2.x is still too complicated. Too many settings. Too many problems with hardware. Therefore, there will be some radical changes:

1) It doesn't make sense, to offer settings, the devices can't perform.
2) It doesn't make sense, to disable settings, if the device performs perfectly.

In Clone 3.x, the settings will be divided in "drive capabilities" and "user settings". CloneCD will get a "Test Mode". With this mode, you can burn a "Calibration CD", and use this CD to calibrate all your reading equipment automatically. The CD will contain all "difficult" combinations, and the reader will be calibrated automatically. This includes reading of Subchannel data, Best Error Skip settings, best numbers of retries, etc. The results will be stored in the registry, so the calibration only needs to be done once for every reader.

This is the major change.

Here are some others:
1) Burning "on the fly" (important for "Burn Proof"
2) Verify of created CD
3) Pausing of reading. It can be continued later, even if CloneCD was closed.
4) User settings can be saved in "Sets" (e.g., Audio CD, SafeDisk, SecuROM, etc.) Loading a Set for a device uncapable of a required feature will cause an error, e.g.: "Device TEAC CD-ROM 532S can't perform requested settings for Set SecuROM".
5) Sounds can be selected (This will actually be in the next CloneCD release 2.x)
6) Windows NT/2000 Kernel Mode driver, so CloneCD doesn't need to run in Admin mode.
7) Analysis of Source CD with User Setting suggestions.
8) (Hopefully) simpler user interface.

CloneCD 3.x is scheduled around Novmener 2000, so all registered CloneCD users will get this update *for free*. The following features might become a seperate product, or an option, I don't know yet:

- VirtualCloneCD allows you to mount your CloneCD images as a "Virtual CD drive". VirtualCloneCD will have at least the same capabilities as CloneCD, probably even more (CD-Cops shouldn't be a problem). The image file can be on a Network or locally.

- CloneDVD is probably *not* what you expect (or does anybody has a DVD-Burner yet?), and the working title is misleading, too. In fact, CloneDVD will mount your DAT Tape Drive (!) as a "Virtual DVD-Drive".
You can play your movies directly from the tape. Just like the "good ol' VCR", only digital and the cartridge is much smaller. Depending on DAT/DVD-R media prices, the project might be cancelled/changed...

The fab of the processor, .18 micron, allows the processor to increase is speed while decreasing the amount of heat generated by the processor of .22 micron at the same speed. Using the simple software we were able to get the Hercules card up to 235 MHz processor speed and up to 370 MHz RAM speed. The heat sinks on the RAM no doubt had a play in the overclocking of the Infineon RAM chips, as this was the highest speed I have seen on these Infineon chips anywhere.

There definetly is speed and power increase from the GeForce DDR, despite some nasty rumors of a rebirth and remarketing of the GeForcce DDR. With speed increases of 60+% on some resolutions, serious gamers that are looking for a next generation video card should look at the Hercules or other reputable GeForce 2 brand.

The Quaver tests show, however, that perhaps what is needed now is more than 32mb of RAM to run these high-texture settings at the optimal speed. The Hercules 64mb version will be arrive in the labs early next week, so we can compare the intense Quaver benchmark against these results. I have a feeling that the extra RAM will greatly enhance the gaming experience.

Bij GamePC is een review online gezet van de Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 200 22" monitor met een platte DiamondTron beeldbuis die een maximale (fatsoenlijke) resolutie trekt van 1800x1440 @ 72 Hz. Deze bak is verder relatief goedkoop gehouden door wat high-end features weg te laten zoals die wel aanwezig zijn op de 2020u en 2040 modellen.

To make the 200 more affordable for the public, Mitsubishi removed features that they thought wouldn't be needed for an enjoyable operation in the average home. So in essence, the 200 is basically a high-end monitors stripped of most of its extra features. Weighing in at close to 66 pounds, it isn't the heaviest monitor we have tested but certainly isn't the lightest. Standing behind their design, Mitsubishi based the 200 off the DiamondTron NF tube. Holding the DiamondTron tube is basically the same exact casing found with both 2020u and 2040u, making the difference between the high-end and low-end models virtually indistinguishable.

Sporting the DiamondTron label, which demands quite a bit of respect with consumers, the 200 shows itself to have excellent image quality. No doubt that the 200 didn't disappoint us and with the NF label, it was just icing on the cake. If you aren't familiar with the NF label, it stands for natural flat, meaning the screen is close to near the flatness of a LCD panel. However having a .24 aperture grille pitch the 200 wasn't as flat as the F500R from Sony, but none of us here in the office could even notice the difference between the two brands. Working with the monitor for about a day or so gave us a sense of what a great performing monitor should be like. With the glass screen having a similar glass coating to that of Mitsubishi's high-end 2040u, glare and eye strain was virtually eliminated.

Bij Anandtech heeft men een review online geslingerd van de Quantum Fireball Plus LM 30GB IDE harde schijf. Deze schijf draait rondjes met 7200 toeren per minuut, heeft een Ultra ATA/66 interface en een 8.5 ms average seek time. Zoals we gewend zijn bij AnandTech weer een hele stapel benchmarks. De schijf kwam heel erg goed door de testen heen, maar is volgens de reviewer nog net niet zo goed als de Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40:

The Quantum Fireball Plus LM, 30GB hard drive, is a solid performing drive and turns in impressive results. As you can see from the Disk Transfer Test graphs on the previous page, even though the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 has a slightly higher outer track score, the Quantum does not drop as far down on the inner tracks. If we look at the overall average disk transfer rates, the Quantum unit comes closer in line with the Maxtor's average score. Even though it comes close, upon careful examination of the graphs produced by the benchmark, we can see that the Maxtor drive was able to maintain a transfer rate at, or above, that of the Quantum unit, for almost the entire first half of the test. For that reason we have to give the nod to the Maxtor drive.

With average raw data transfer speeds comparable to the highly rated Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40, along with a solid showing in the other tests, we felt the Quantum Fireball Plus LM is about on the same level as the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40. Even though it edged the Maxtor out on a few tests, we still think the Maxtor managed to hold on to it's lead, but just barely.

The result of the shortage is higher prices for customers looking to buy flash-memory enabled devices and lag times of as long as four months in getting newly manufactured flash memory to market, according to Brian Kumagai, the business development manager for low-power SRAM and NOR flash at Toshiba.

Transmeta's Taiwanese fab partner, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TMSC), has begun sampling 0.15 micron Crusoe CPUs, according to Taiwan business paper the Commercial Times.

If accurate, that's an impressive leap over the 0.18 micron process Transmeta originally specified at Crusoe's launch, and should allow the company to get its chip family's low power consumption even lower.

TMSC's 'leak' to CT is actually little more than a puff-piece for the semiconductor company, which claims that its "persistent efforts to access the CPU market" were "spurned" by Intel and AMD.

Chipzilla and the Col. Sanders' lesser lizard will clearly rue the day, though, since "TSMC may now be about to turn the tables on them through its tie with Transmeta. The launch of Transmeta's innovative Crusoe chip early in 2000 has taken the spotlight away from Intel's Celeron chip". So there.

The TechZone heeft een review gemaakt van het TinyBGA PC133 SDRAM van Kingmax. De reviewer was aardig te spreken over het geheugen (understatement) en gaf het dan ook een 9,5 als cijfer :

Who says size is everything or bigger is better? When I first looked at this SDRAM I was absolutely awestruck by its appearance. It was smaller than any other SDRAM I’ve encountered in every conceivable way. The thickness of the double-sided 128 meg DIMM seemed to be thinner than my single-sided 64 meg stick of Samsung PC100. And even more astonishing is the fact that this stick of Kingmax stood at a height that was 60% that of my Samsung. Now that’s definitely impressive! But, I had my skepticism… There had to be some sort of performance compromise for that decrease in size. Ahhh… But I was wrong. Read on… This memory will make a believer out of you, too!

Zoals je kan zien hierboven is het TinyBGA geheugen (links) een stuk kleiner dan normaal geheugen, wat goed is voor een aantal dingen: het past misschien in een slot waar een koeler overheen zit, betere warmte afgifte door PCB en een korte signal trace wat betekend dat het geheugen op meer MHz kan lopen .

[CoSD]Headbanger schrijft: "Bij OCtools staat een heel interessant artikel over het overklokken van een P3-600E, uitvoerig uitgelegd met shots van de gebruikte proggies. Het doel was om de de processor van 600 MHz naar 1 GHz over te klokken. Dit lukte niet, de processor kwam op 890MHz met een FSB van 148MHz, op zich natuurlijk geen slecht resultaat. Dat ze bij OCtools weg zijn van overklokken moge duidelijk zijn, er wordt in het artikel zelfs uitgelegd hoe ze de TNT2 die in het testsysteem zat op 179/242 lieten lopen .

No matter what I do I can't seem to run 100% at anything above 148mhz FSB. This is the last setting that would run rock solid and pass all the stability tests. I even have to change the memory settings to 3,3,3 because the RAM maxes out at this setting in CAS2. The system would post up to 960mhz but is very unstable in Windows even if the voltages are set to their maximum. Guess I'ved hit the limit of this CPU, pretty sure it's not the RAM and Vid card maxing out because they're both tested to run up to 166mhz FSB. Well 290mhz above spec is still a very good overclock. And for the price they're selling it, it is worth the upgrade from that 'ol 500E. I hope the new steppings are better overclockers. Hmmm.. 1 GIGAHERTZ! Perhaps a 650E or a 700E will do the trick next time.

PC Stats heeft een leuke vergelijking online gemieterd tussen de Asus V6600 Pro met 64MB aan SDRAM en de Asus V6800 met 32MB aan DDR geheugen. De conclusie is simpel, het extra 32MB aan SDRAM is niet echt winstgevend en kan het bij lange na niet winnen van een DDR kaart met de helft (32MB) aan geheugen onboard:

The extra ram does not seem to help in Quake III Demo1. In fact the V6800 with 32MB DDR is the clear-cut Quake III performance leader. So less seems like more in this case . Additionally, the Pentium III 800EB Mhz is faster (20-30 FPS) in the lower resolutions whilst utilizing the DDR ram equipped Geforce.

[...] There is absolutely no reason why I would keep the Asus V6600 Pro 64MB if I had a choice between the two. The V6800 is faster in all of the benchmarks that matters to the average gamer. And while more RAM is generally good, it does not seem to usher in higher performance this time around. Having said all that, the V6600Pro is still a really fast card; it's simply just not as fast as its DDR toting brethren...

Zoals verwacht was er ook een plaatsje aan de onderhandelingstafel gereserveerd voor het Duitse mediaconcern Bertelsmann. Met het mediabedrijf wordt een 'strategische relatie' uitgebouwd dat erop neerkomt dat Bertelsmann over een periode van vijf jaar publiciteitsruimte ter waarde van 1 miljard dollar en T-L-toegang krijgt tot alle publicaties van het concern. Bovendien zal T-L een participatie van 49 percent nemen in een nog op te richten draadloze communicatie joint venture met Téléfonica. Schattingen zetten de omzet voor 2000 ergens rond de 500 miljoen dollar. De portaalsite krijgt dagelijks ongeveer 50 bezoekers en ontvangt 175 miljoen pageviews.

ASUS requires that all dealers and distributors stop shipping or selling these products as well and follow ASUS' instructions for their return. As far as P3C-E, P3C-L, P3C-S, P3C-LS, and P3C-D are concerned, they are all RAMBUS-based motherboards and ASUS will continue manufacturing and distributing them.

Mike Andrawes van AnandTech heeft de Asus P3V4X VIA Apollo Pro 133a plank nogmaals getest vanwege de release van een nieuwe VIA AGP GART drivers, versie 4.02. Eerder werd namelijk ontdekt dat de performance onder Quake 3 Arena zwaar verslechterde wanneer versie 4.00 gebruikt werd. De enige oplossing voor dit probleem bleek toen om terug te gaan naar versie 3.59, maar dat is natuurlijk ook weer niet een ideale fix. Gelukkig blijkt alles weer perfect te werken met VIA's nieuwe AGP driver die afgelopen week uitkwam.

Fortunately, the P3V4X is once again neck and neck with the competition under Windows 2000. However, we do see a drastic performance drop when going from Windows 98SE to Windows 2000 under either motherboard. In fact, it's about the same performance drop we saw on the ASUS when going to the 4.00 AGP GART driver on the P3V4X under Windows 98SE. Coincidence? We're not sure. It could simply be the effects of immature Windows 2000 drivers, a problem with the VIA AGP GART included with Windows 2000, or just Windows 2000 in general.

More investigation is necessary to determine the cause of these observations, but that is not the focus of the current article. The key here is that the P3V4X performs just like any other VIA Apollo Pro 133A solution. Rest assured that AnandTech will be looking into the effect of Windows 2000 on performance in the near future.

DiGiSTORM vond bij Ace's Hardware een link naar een PDF met een erg interessant artikel, geschreven door ene Hans de Vries, waarin een vergelijking wordt gemaakt tussen AMD's Mustang en de Willamette van Intel. Even wat copy/paste-werk uit de conclusies van dit 19 pagina's lange verhaal:

If the conclusions that (a) Willamette would show a somewhat lower performance for existing code then the Coppermine, and (b) The Mustang would be a conside- rable improvement over the Thunderbird. Then we must conclude that the performance gap at equal frequency between the current Thunderbird and Coppermine will only grow significantly in the case of the Mustang and Willamette. The basic advantages of the Mustang seems to be that it‚s a wider super scalar processor then the Willamette and its short integer instruction pipeline is better resistant against branch miss predictions. If fetching data early from memory ahead of the operations is important then the Mustang can start loading data six cycles after the instruction cache access with two load ports in parallel. The Willamette in contrast needs fifteen cycles from the trace-cache access to the single load port data-cache before it can start loading. Every extra cycle increases the change for a branch miss prediction. The capability to include a larger on-chip L2 cache on die is the other major advantage that Mustang has over Willamette in the performance race.

Koen Crijns heeft een artikel geschreven over de momenteel aanwezige troubles in de wereld van de moederborden. Zoals je weet zijn KX133 borden nogal snel onbruikbaar als je wilt upgraden naar de Thunderbird vanwege het feit dat AMD geen Slot-A T-birds zal leveren (buiten de grote OEMs) en daarnaast we niet op converter cards hoeven te rekenen. Op het Intel front is er nog steeds dat 'klein' probleempje met de MTH Hub waardoor een i820 plank met SDRAM erg beroerd werkt. Intel heeft aangekondigd Cape Code mobo's + SDRAM te zullen vervangen voor een exemplaar met RIMMetjes, maar Koen betwijfelt of dit wel echt zal gebeuren:

Ja, je leest het goed: of je nu een ASUS P3C2000, Gigabyte GA-6CXC, MSI MS-6301 of welk ander Intel 820 + SD-Ram moederbord dan ook hebt: de MTH-bug gaat ook jou aan. De omruil-actie die Intel bedacht heeft, kosten de moederbord-fabrikanten, distributeurs en verkopers veel tijd en geld. Het is dan onduidelijk hoe een en ander geregeld gaat worden. Sommige fabrikanten zullen wellicht het aankoopbedrag vergoeden. Dit lijkt mij een mooie oplossing, aangezien het bord zo omgeruild kan worden voor een VIA Apollo Pro 133A moederbord en je er denkelijk nog geld bij krijgt. Als er echter toch een omruiling plaatsvindt van een 820 moederbord met DIMM ondersteuning naar een 820 moederbord met RIMM ondersteuning zit je dus met het “geheugen probleem”. Hoe dat opgelost gaat worden is mij helaas nog steeds niet duidelijk. Op de Intel website valt te lezen dat als je een echt Intel 820 moederbord met DIMM hebt (de CC820), dat Intel het moederbord én geheugen zal omruilen naar een ander 820 moederbord met een RIMM module. Of andere fabrikanten dat ook zullen doen, betwijfel ik ten zeerste
