Yahoo en Bloomberg melden dat VIA binnenkort zal aankondigen dat het de graphics chip unit van S3 overneemt. Na de acquisitie zal de 3D graphics divisie door VIA in een apart bedrijf ondergebracht worden:

With comprehensive technology and wide distribution channels, the company now ranks among the most powerful and diverse forces in the PC and Internet service industries.
VIA Technologies has already organized a joint research team for R&D projects. They have also invested in each other and VIA Technologies presently holds about 15% of S3's shares.
After the acquisition, VIA Technologies plans to establish an independent graphics chip company with huge capital.
Intel Corp. is on the verge of ending the patent authorization agreement with Via Technologies.
But since S3 has signed a long-term cross-licensing agreement with Intel to use each other's technology and patents, the acquisition will allow VIA Technologies to continue securing technical know-how from Intel.
