The speech recognition engine, developed by subsidiary Philips Speech Processing, will be aimed at mobile wireless products like cell phones for handheld and automotive applications, where voice-activated calling would simplify operation. Philips' technology has been integrated into the DSP1629 chip from Lucent's Microelectronics Group, which additionally features Lucent's acoustic echo and line echo cancellation, adaptive noise suppression, simultaneous voice and data modem, and voice memo recording. The chip has been designed to recognize English and several European and Asian languages as it makes its way into the telematics market.
