The new version of the 7400 is expected to be initially released in 600, 700 and 800MHz versions, with a 1GHz version to follow in the first quarter of 2001. However, the product is much more than a simply speed increase, and adds a 256Kb Level 2 cache on the chip, running at the same speed as the processor. The chip also adds support for 64- and 128-bit MaxBus, backside caches of up to 4Mb, and better support for multiprocessing. Importantly for the Mac, it also adds a second AltiVec vector-processing unit, which should significantly increase performance on applications that are enhanced to take advantage of AltiVec.Of high importance for Apple will be the power requirements of the new processor, which, according to the AIM sources, will be 'much lower than the current series, and maybe even cooler than the current G3 [740]'. This means that Apple will be able to finally build a PowerBook G4.
