BikkelZ bracht ons wat positief nieuws voor Mac fanaten, want als we MacOS Rumors mogen geloven dan wordt er eindelijk vooruitgang geboekt in de ontwikkeling van de G4 opvolger. Zoals je waarschijnlijk weet heeft Motorola grote moeite met het verhogen van de G4 kloksnelheid, omdat de G4 door z'n extreem korte pipeline een zeer slecht schaalbaarheid heeft.
Motorola hoopt de problemen op te lossen met de nieuwe G4e core, die voorzien is van een langere pipeline en daardoor beter geschikt is voor hogere kloksnelheden. Om het verlies van IPC te compenseren worden extra pipelines toegevoegd en wordt de Altivec unit verder verbeterd. MasOS Rumors speculeert dat de G4e mogelijk gebruik gaat worden in een nieuwe serie Powerbooks, die in de komende drie maanden aangekondigd kan worden:

Optimists are hoping that this will mean a go-ahead for an announcement of the PBG4 at Apple Expo Paris on the 13th; Apple sources caution, however, that enough uncertainty about the SOI G4/G4es that will be used in portable applications to hold back an announcement until Apple actually has enough of these chips in hand to assure a smooth rollout.
That could take at least a month (and as much as three) based on projections made in early August, sources say -- making the details of Motorola's report, Apple's reaction(s) to it, and any changes it has made to the SOI G4(e) projections very important.
