Tech Junkie heeft een review gepost van de SGI Visual Workstation. Dat is een doos om op te geilen...
The Visual Workstations are unique in the system layout. Instead of basing everything around the Pentium CPU, the VW is based around a Cobalt Graphics Processor. The CPU (Pentium II/III) has been demoted to being a geometry engine. This way, a faster CPU can scale performance remarkably as geometry calculations take a leap in performance.VW’s use a Unified Memory Architecture (UMA). Basically, everything in the system shares memory from one common pool. There’s no such thing as dedicated video memory, system memory and sound memory here. The transfer rate between the Cobalt and the memory is an astounding 3.2 GB’s per second. Six times faster than AGP 2x.
