Bij GamePC is een nuttige guide verschenen om iedereen die nog niet bekend is met DDR geheugen dat alsnog te maken, voordat de eerste moederborden op de markt komen die daarvoor ondersteuning hebben. De guide gaat eerst in op de basics van SDRAM en legt daarna kort uit wat DDR is. Er worden daarnaast ook wat praktische zaken besproken zoals: hoeveel performance kan ik verwachten met DDR geheugen, hoe duur is het, en hoe kan ik DDR van SDR geheugen onderscheiden:

Currently, DDR DRAM is only slightly more expensive than normal SDRAM, which bodes well for the consumer. Also, since manufacturers can test and validate DDR DRAM with many of the same tools they currently use, much of the added cost from the manufacturing process will be reduced as well.

As to the performance gain a user will see, I'm willing to bet that Athlon owners will see a larger performance increase because of the EVA bus the Athlon sits on. A 100 MHz bus with a DDR interface (200 MHz transfer) will match nicely with a similar memory subsystem. PIII owners will probably not see as large a performance leap, but the upcoming Pentium4 has some interesting possibilities (we won't even comment on the fact that Intel may not be able to make DDR chipsets due to an agreement with Rambus).

We do know that increases in the FSB speed really benefit computer performance, especially for system intensive applications (like games), and adding more speed in to the system in any fashion can't be bad.

De webserver is een paar centimeter groot en heeft als hardware 64KB flash geheugen, 1KB systeem geheugen en als processor een vaag Philips dingetje. Goedkoop is deze webserver ook, voor 35 dollar kan je er al eentje mee naar huis nemen en als je een super vette cluster wilt bouwen kan je één miljoen SitePlayers krijgen voor 12 dollar per stuk. In onze dagelijkse berichtgeving over de handel en wandel van Rambus Inc. kunnen we vandaag melden dat Rambus in Duitsland een aanklacht heeft ingediend tegen de duitse IC bakker Infineon, de voormalige halfgeleider divisie van Siemens. Rambus Inc. beschuldigd Infineon van patent breuk en eist dat de verkoop van Infineon SDRAM en DDR produkten in Europa wordt gestaakt. De beide partijen ontmoeten elkaar op 22 december voor de rechter in Mannheim:

Rambus here on Wednesday evening announced it has filed a lawsuit in Germany, accusing Infineon of infringing upon its synchronous DRAM patents, following similar cases filed in Europe against Micron Technology Inc. and Hyundai Electronics Industries Co.

Rambus--which is being sued by Munich-based Infineon for patent infringement in the U.S.--also said it has filed a lawsuit in Eastern U.S. District Court in Virginia alleging "willful patent infringement" against the German company.

Sony gaat nog een treedje hoger in zijn plannen om een op de PS2 gebaseerde graphics supercomputer op de markt te zetten en heeft aangekondigd dat deze GScube nu wordt voorzien van maar liefst 64 processor boards, elk bestaande uit een Emotion Engine en een Graphics Synthesizer. Beide chips worden ook toegepast in de Playstation II. Eerder werd in juli op de Siggraph 2000 een prototype gedemonstreerd met 16 processors, maar uit de feedback die zij daar kregen bleek dat 16 processors niet snel genoeg zou zijn. De bak met 64 Emo's kan 4,16 gigapolygons/s rondpompen en trekt 60 frames per sec op een resolutie van 1980 bij 1080px:

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has accelerated its plans to roll out a high-end graphics computer based on its Playstation game console technology. The company announced plans this week to introduce a system called GScube next year that will use 64 processor boards with Playstation 2 technology.

Sony and one of its collaborators, a film production company called Square, jointly demonstrated the GScube in Tokyo on Tuesday (Sept. 12) by synthesizing a footage in real-time from the computer-graphics movie version of Final Fantasy. Square is now producing this film, based on a popular computer game, for release next summer in the United States.

Craig Campanaro van PlanetHardware heeft een roundup geschreven van 5 moderne videokaarten. in de test doen de 3dfx Voodoo5 5500, ATI Radeon 64MB, ELSA Gladiac GeForce2 GTS 64MB, Hercules 3D Prophet II GTS 64MB en de Hercules 3D Prophet II MX 32MB mee. Voor de volledigheid is ook een reference GeForce2 Ultra opgenomen in de testen, maar deze wordt niet uiteindelijk beoordeeld.

Als laatste eindigt de 3dfx Voodoo5 5500, vooral vanwege zijn hoge prijs en het feit dat hij dezelfde performance levert als de veel goedkopere Hercules GeForce2 MX. Daarvoor staat de Radeon 64MB, waarmee niet veel mis is, hij is alleen minder snel dan de geteste GF2GTS kaarten. Bovenaan de lijst staan de twee hercules kaarten, de GeForce2 GTS aan de top. MacOS Rumors meldt dat de gisteren aangekondigde iBook modellen worden geleverd met de nieuwe PowerPC 750CX processors van IBM, die de beschikking hebben over 256KB on-die L2 cache en een aantal energiebesparende functies. De oude generatie iBooks maakten gebruik van de PPC750 met 512KB off-die L2 cache op de halve core snelheid of minder:

VIAHardware.com heeft het Dual FC-PGA moederbord van MSI, de 694D Pro, eens onder de loep genomen. In de review wordt gekeken naar de stabiliteit van het systeem en prestaties in de reguliere benchmarks. Het enige probleem dat echt opvalt is de verschillen tussen de voltages van de eerste en tweede processor. In sommige configuraties draaide CPU1 0.09V hoger dan CPU2, terwijl dit gelijk zou moeten zijn. Ondanks dit kleine minpuntje is de eindconclusie erg positief:

For those wishing to overclock, this motherboard has a lot of potential, but a few issues still to be worked out. Uit een onderzoek van Andersen consulting blijkt dat 95 procent van de internet-gebruikers zich zorgen maakt om hun privacy. Ondanks deze zorgen geven veel internetters belangrijke persoonlijke informatie door via het internet. Opvallend is juist dat de groep mensen die vaak belangrijke gegevens doorgeeft zich veel meer zorgen om hun privacy maken dan de mensen die nauwelijks persoonlijke gegevens via het internet verstrekken.

AMSTERDAM - Bijna alle internetgebruikers zijn bezorgd over hun privacy op het net. Ondanks die bezorgdheid heeft tweederde van de websurfers toch ooit zeer persoonlijke informatie gegeven zoals het nummer van hun creditcard.

Dat blijkt, volgens persbureau Reuters, uit een studie die is uitgevoerd door bureau Andersen Consulting en de Vanderbilt University. Zo'n 95 procent van de consumenten maakt zich grote zorgen over de privacy op internet.

Wel bestaat er verschil tussen het verschaffen van bepaalde persoonlijke informatie. Medische gegevens worden eerder prijsgegeven dan de persoonlijke financiële situatie.

Van de ondervraagden blijkt 28 procent bereid te zijn hun creditcardnummer te geven. 62 Procent heeft dat tot nu toe al eens gedaan. Een soortgelijk beeld is te zien bij het sofi-nummer, 12 procent heeft er geen bezwaar tegen om dat te geven en 28 procent van de internetgebruikers heeft zijn sofi-nummer al eens ingetikt.

PK meldt dat Philips vandaag heeft aangekondigd met drie nieuwe geluidskaarten te komen gebaseerd op hun eigen Thunderbird Q3D en Thunderbird Avenger audio-chips. De geluidskaarten die Philips gaat produceren zijn de Rhythmic Edge (2 speaker), de Seismic Edge (4 speaker) en de lekkerste smaak is de Acoustic Edge met 5.1 speaker support.

De Rhythmic Edge en Seismic Edge krijgen ondersteuning voor DS3D, EAX 1 en A3D 1 en de Acoustic Edge met de Thunderbird Avenger chip krijgt ook nog ondersteuning voor EAX 2. De Rhythmic Edge en Seismic Edge gaan 49.99 en resp. 79.99 dollar kosten en zullen deze maand nog in de winkels terecht komen. Op de Acoustic Edge zullen we wat langer moeten wachten, tot november, en deze zal dan een prijskaartje van 99.99 dollar dragen.

Om dit kort samen te vatten: de 2 en 4 speaker geluidskaartjes zijn dus niet echt bijzonder en redelijk duur, maar de Acoustic Edge met 5.1 speaker support, een betere audiochip en een goede prijs is erg interessant :

Er zal een onafhankelijk onderzoek komen, waarmee meer duidelijkheid gegeven moet worden over de UMTS-veiling van afgelopen juli. De Tweede Kamer heeft hier nu een overeenstemming over bereikt en is op zoek naar deskundigen. Over drie maanden zal het rapport klaar zijn:

De Tweede Kamer spreekt zelf volgende maand met het kabinet over de veiling. Alle partijen willen weten hoe de veiling van UMTS-frequenties is voorbereid, wat de rol van de overheid is geweest en hoe de geringe opbrengst (5,9 miljard gulden) is te verklaren.

De VVD, die eerder aarzelingen had bij een onderzoek in opdracht van de Kamer, steunt het initiatief. De liberalen vinden het belangrijk dat er eerst overleg met het kabinet plaatsvindt. Op initiatief van de VVD is afgesproken dat de onderzoeksopzet nog gewijzigd kan worden als het debat met de regering daar aanleiding voor geeft.

Vandaag is Microsoft begonnen met de levering van Windows Me, de opvolger van Windows 98. Windows ME maakt zoals bekent nog steeds gebruik van de Win9x kernel, en heeft daarom als sterkste verkooppunt niet het OS zelf maar de bijbehorende applicaties. Het lijkt er op dat de lancering rustig is verlopen, zover ik weet waren er dit jaar geen groepen mensen die de nacht voor de winkel doorbrachten om maar zo vroeg mogelijk in het bezit te komen van de nieuwste Windows versie:

Microsoft Nederland presenteerde Windows Me donderdag in Amsterdam aan de pers. Het concern benadrukte bij monde van marketingmanager Kees Pronk dat het systeem het eerste van Microsoft is dat specifiek voor de thuisgebruiker is ontwikkeld.

[...] Analisten tonen zich in het algemeen weinig onder de indruk van Windows Millennium Edition. WebWereld schrijft dat Paul Maritz Microsoft gaat verlaten. De goede man was "group vice-president platforms en strategie", een belangrijke persoon voor het bedrijf dus. De precieze reden van het vertrek wordt niet genoemd, maar wel wordt vermeld dat het een 'persoonlijke reden' is. In combinatie met het feit dat eerder dit jaar andere topmanagers Microsoft ook al verlieten, zou je kunnen gaan denken dat er een samenhang bestaat tussen hun vertrek en dat van Maritz. Overigens had hij laatst een mail naar de medewerkers van Microsoft gestuurd waarin een zinnetje stond dat niet zo positief is voor het bedrijf. Of dit de reden van vertrek is wordt niet duidelijk, maar het lijkt me dat Microsoft hier niet echt blij mee is:

Bij Microsoft overzag Maritz de algehele platformstrategie. Hij leidde het team dat werkte aan het hart van Windows. Bij de presentatie van Microsofts nieuwste platform .NET was Maritz een van de belangrijkste sprekers. Daarnaast was Maritz verantwoordelijk voor de productplanning en business development als het gaat om platformtechnologieën.

De vertrekkende topman was ook het middelpunt van een van de meest schaamtevolle momenten van Microsoft. Maritz schreef een e-mail aan Microsoft-medewerkers waarin hij zei dat Internet Explorer moest worden ingebouwd in Windows om 'Netscape's luchttoevoer af te snijden'. Dit mailtje werd in de antitrustzaak gebruikt als bewijs tegen Microsoft.

The Tech Report informeert ons over de kwaliteiten van de AIWA CDC-MP3 autoradio die sinds kort ook in Nederland leverbaar is voor een prijs van 1100 gulden. Afgezien van een wat wazig werkende random functie en wat gepiel met het losse frontje blijkt hij verder prima te werken. ID3 tags worden ondersteund en standaard krijg je er een handig afstandsbediengkje bij. Hieronder een gedeelte uit de conclusie:

Of course, my complaints about the CDC-MP3 can be explained with that familiar parental quote: "I'm only so hard on you because I love you." Heh heh. Although I managed to take up a lot of space complaining about the faults of the CDC-MP3, in the grand scheme of things they're quibbles that can be worked around fairly easily.

Exercise some care with the random play feature, spend some time learning how to attach and detach the face, and you'll be fine. As for the flashing illumination "feature," I find that rolling your eyes and muttering "stupid" whenever you notice it works fairly well.

I guess I'm trying to say it could be a lot worse. Can you imagine if the CDC-MP3 didn't have subfolder support, or only showed track numbers and not filenames? Even the omission of the "auto scroll" feature for the filenames or ID3 track names would've been much more frustrating than the problems I found, and much more difficult to work around.

Conclusion:
Just go buy this thing. Seriously. The CDC-MP3 is just about everything you could want in an in-dash CD MP3 player. Organize your CD's well, and you'll be able to hop to any track you want within a few seconds. The sound is great; the look is great. And from a usability perspective, the thing just works. It's so good, in fact, that I am making it the first product here at TR to earn the coveted 11 on our world famous 11 point scale. Tremble in fear.

Dutch Power Cows is vandaag 1e en heeft een kans van één op 19 om de sleutel te vinden!

Bovag is op hun site begonnen met een protestactie tegen de hoge brandstofaccijnzen, meldt Nu.nl. Doel is om de benzienaccijnzen een kwartje te laten dalen en de dieselprijzen 19 en een halve cent. Op de website kun je ook je mening over dit probleem kwijt. Van een gulden die aan benzine wordt uitgegeven is 65 cent voor de btw en de accijnzen, hiermee is Nederland koploper in EG wat betreft de brandstofprijzen.

Ook de brancheorganisatie Bovag is in actie gekomen tegen de hoge brandstofprijzen. In een brandbrief op vraagt Bovag samen met de Rai Vereniging de benzineprijs met het Kwartje van Kok te verlagen en de dieselaccijns met 19,5 cent.

Het is een begin van een actie van de Bovag om ministers en Kamerleden indringend te informeren over de mening van de Nederlanders over de benzine- en dieselaccijns. Op internet heeft Bovag op haar website een nieuw gedeelte geopend, waar bezoekers hun mening kunnen geven.

VIA Hardware verblijdt ons met een review van de Inno3D Tornado GeForce2 MX videokaart in PCI smaak. Aangezien de GeForce2 MX accelerator wel gebruik maakt van de voordelen van de AGP bus is deze PCI versie duidelijk minder snel. Alleen het overwegen waard als je dus per ongeluk een AGP-loos i810 plankje hebt gekocht bijvoorbeeld:

Inno3D does nothing if create innovative products at reasonable prices, and their GeForce 2 MX PCI is no exception. However, the NVidia GeForce GPU series was never designed to take good advantage of the PCI bus, and the mere 128MB/s of bandwidth chokes the once-powerful T+L engine. For users that MUST have a PCI video card (All you MVP4/i810e/ALiTNT2 supporters), the 3dfx Voodoo4/5 series makes much more sense, as it does not depend on a high-bandwidth bus to perform. Luckily, the Inno MX PCI comes at a reasonable price, estimated to be only $20 more then Inno3D's $100-130 AGP version, which undercuts the 3dfx V4/V5 PCI series by quite a bit.

Anand is in het bezit gekomen van de eerste sample van het FIC AD-11 mobo gebaseerd op de AMD 760 chipset met DDR SDRAM ondersteuning. Alhoewel de behaalde resultaten in de preview bij lange na niet representatief zijn voor de final versie loopt het verschil met VIA's KT133 toch al op tot zo'n kleine 20%. Het systeem was verder uitgerust met een 1GHz Athlon (200MHz FSB), 128MB PC1600 DDR SDRAM en een Voodoo5 PCI videokaart (dit vanwege het ontbreken van een werkende AGP miniport driver). De eerste indrukken zijn samenvattend dus zeer positief te noemen, mede dankzij de goede stabiliteit waar deze zeer vroege sample al over beschikte:

As a preview of the benefits of DDR SDRAM on the Athlon platform, we see a lot of potential in the AMD 760 and similar chipsets from ALi and VIA. While the performance improvement provided by DDR SDRAM isn't going to be earth shattering across the board, the 5 - 20% boost we do see on average will definitely be appreciated, especially considering that DDR SDRAM shouldn't carry that high of a price premium over regular PC133 SDRAM.

An area of performance we weren't able to investigate due to the problems we experienced during our testing was the professional level application performance of DDR SDRAM in benchmarks such as High End Winstone 99 and more importantly, SPECviewperf. It seems like the latter would definitely benefit from the features of DDR SDRAM: added memory bandwidth without added latency penalties, however we will have to save those benchmarks for another time with a hopefully more mature sample.

The picture we're painting here is really only half of the story though. Aside from the fact that the performance of the AMD 760 platform will improve with better drivers, and more mature platforms (although the FIC AD-11 was amazingly solid in our tests), the AMD 760 chipset officially supports the 266MHz (133MHz DDR) FSB frequency.

Ja, het wordt onderhand wel even welles-nietes spelletje. Vortex Of Sound bericht dat het er naar uitziet dat Creative toch nog het failliete Aureal gaat kopen. Het enige probleem is dat enkele crediteuren van Aureal hier kennelijk niet zo gelukkig mee zijn:

It looks like Creative will be buying the ashes of Aureal after all. While the amount of the alleged purchase is unknown, we had heard weeks ago that Creative was offering in excess of $35 million in order to take Guillemot out of the running. The deal may not materialize, however, as some creditors apparently are not happy with the company being sold to Creative, and are planning to file a petition with the court to block the sale.

Devious liet weten dat op deze site een uitlegje staat over hoe je de onboard Promise IDE controller op de Gigabyte BX2000+, Gigabyte GA-6BX7+ en MSI BX Master kunt ombouwen tot een IDE RAID controller:

This modification will not work on all motherboards, but it will presumably work on all motherboards, which are using the Promise IDE-66 controller. This chip will identify these boards:

This chip does also exist on the cheap PCI Promise IDE-66 controller, and boards without this chip will presumably not work.

On both the controller card and the motherboard with the PDC20262-chip will there be a connection between pin 52 on the chip and pin 36 the primary IDE port. There are also approx. a 34 ohms resistor to connect the pins. This image is consequently general for all ATA/66 controllers be Promise.

Let wel alles op eigen risico en wees voorzichtig! Solderen aan een mamaplankje moet je alleen doen als je hem kunt missen en wanneer je enige soldeer-ervaring hebt (wij staan in ieder geval niet in voor de gevolgen) .

Hoewel er nooit veel ruchtbaarheid aan is gegeven, blijkt de Asus V7100 GeForce2 MX videokaart inmiddels ook leverbaar te zijn in een goedkope 16MB versie. Op Pricewatch.com wordt de kaart aangeboden voor iets meer dan 100 dollar, maar in onze eigen pricewatch kan ik de 16MB V7100 nog niet terugvinden. Leuk dingetje voor low-end systemen, maar waarschijnlijk niet geschikt voor hi-res gamers:

Although GeForce2 MX 16 Mb boards were not announced officially by anybody yet, they are being sold quite well. So far only virtually though, to be honest. PriceWatch has 9 offers from different sellers. Prices vary from $101 to $151, and in addition to the previously rumored card from ASUS there is also one from Inno3D at a price of $103.

Na de posting over de ondergedruppelde Apple Expo nu het échte nieuws, namelijk de aankondiging van nieuwe iBooks en de langverwachte release van de MacOS X public beta. Beide produkten werden gisteren door ome Steve in Parijs gepresenteerd. De nieuwe iBooks hebben kloksnelheden tot 466MHz en kunnen geleverd worden met een Firewire poort, wat erg handig is voor het aanleggen van digitale camcorders en removable media. De verwachting dat Apple ook nieuwe Powerbooks zou prestenteren, kwam helaas niet uit. Wel liet Steve weten dat de PowerMacs vanaf heden ook met Radeon videokaarten geleverd kunnen worden. Blijkbaar zijn de onenigheden met ATi bijgelegd:

As expected, Jobs also rolled out the promised public beta version of Mac OS X. The first end-user version of the next-generation OS is available at the show or at Apple's online store for $29.95 on a single CD-ROM that contains English, French and German versions. Jobs said the final version is still on track for early 2001.

Meanwhile, Jobs also announced the immediate availability of ATI Technology Inc.'s Radeon graphics processor for all G4-based Mac models.

The new iBook and iBook Special Edition, which reportedly carried the code name P 1.5, each pack FireWire connectivity and Version 2.0 of the company's iMovie consumer video-editing package.

In maart kregen een paar fellow tweakers het idee om een wat grotere LAN-Party te organiseren dan de bescheiden slaapkamer party's die zij gewend waren. Na wat sponsors bij elkaar geronseld te hebben werd een geschikte locatie gevonden in het B.O.V. Zalen complex te Apeldoorn. Op zaterdag 30 september begint hier om 10:00 uur de eerste editie van de Tweakout2k LAN party. De party duurt tot minimaal 23:00u. Vanwege de hoge kosten van de huur was een langere duur helaas niet mogelijk. In eerste instantie zijn er 75 kaarten beschikbaar (één kaart per systeem), maar er wordt overwogen om meer plaats te creëren als de organisatie wordt geflood door een overwacht hoge belangstelling.

Op de party zijn een paar snelle game servers aanwezig en er worden prijzen weggegeven. De toegangsprijs is slechts FL 12,50, dus wat dat betreft wordt 't geen dure aangelegenheid zoals bijvoorbeeld een dagje WAN.

De mannen van GA-Hardware hebben een review geschreven van de VideoLogic Vivid videokaart. Deze videokaart is gebaseerd op de Kyro chip, en maakt derhalve gebruik van tile-based rendering om de performance flink te verhogen. De core liep op deze kaart op 115MHz en heeft geheugen wat theoretisch op 143MHz kan lopen (maar aangezien het synchroon loopt met de clocksnelheid loopt het op 115MHz). Als je dus gaat overclocken zal het geheugen je niet in de weg zitten. De kaart die GA-Hardware in handen kreeg bleek niet zo'n fantastisch overclockwonder en kon maximaal op 125MHz/125MHz draaien. Op deze snelheid is de kaart, afhankelijk van de kleurendiepte, in de meeste benchmarks rond het niveau van een GeForce SDR. Aangezien de prijs op GeForce MX niveau komt te liggen, en de performance alleen nog maar beter kan worden is het zeker een interessant budget kaartje :

I am wary of drawing any conclusion about the Vivid considering the fact that they will be improving the drivers before the time of shipping. There are a few conclusions that I can draw though. The first is that the technology behind this card is astounding. I was amazed by the fact that a card with so little actual fill-rate could compete with cards that had twice the amount. If this card is an indication of what VideoLogic has in store for us in the future then we will surely see some great things come from their neck of the woods.

The card also has some very nice features that would surely influence my buying decision. The Internal True Color technology makes a definite difference in 16bit image quality, though why anyone would run this card at 16bit when the performance hit you take for moving to 32bit is minimal to say the least is beyond me. The card also supports Environment Mapped Bump-Mapping, a feature that used to be unique to cards from Matrox. If you have ever seen EMBM in action you know how much of a difference in can make in overall visual quality.

My final conclusion is that this is only a preview. While the card does show some promising features and speed, it would be unwise to make your purchasing decision based on the information contained within this preview. I would recommend however that if you are in the market for a budget gaming card and are considering a GeForce2 MX based board you might want to wait a few weeks. The Vivid's price point is about the same as MX based boards in the United States and is actually lower in Europe and the UK. As soon as I get the shipping drivers in (which I have been assured I will be) I will write up a full review of this board and make a definite recommendation.

Rambus heeft vandaag bekend gemaakt dat verschillende elektronica fabriekanten zijn begonnen met de levering van HDTV's die 128Mb aan Rambus geheugen bevatten. Dit om de 'state-of-the-art' MPEG2 decoder goed te kunnen voeren met data. Verwacht wordt dat Rambus geheugen in nog veel meer HDTV's en digitale videorecorders gebruikt zal gaan worden omdat het blijkbaar een gunstige prijs performance ratio heeft voor dit soort apparatuur:

Rambus Inc. today announced that leading Japanese consumer product manufacturers have started shipping High Definition Televisions (HDTV) and digital satellite broadcast Set-Top Boxes (STB) in time for the broadcasting of the Sydney Olympic Games. Using one to two RDRAM(R) devices, for 1.6 GB/sec memory bandwidth, the Rambus(R) solution provides high-speed data transfer rates together with the lowest granularity memory subsystem.

Panasonic started shipping several models of HDTVs and high definition digital satellite broadcast set-top boxes. They incorporate a state-of-the-art MPEG2 decoder developed by Matsushita and use Rambus 128Mb RDRAM for high speed decoding memory.

Sony also announced a set-top box for high definition digital satellite broadcast. These systems incorporate a state-of-the-art MPEG2 decoder, jointly developed with NEC, and use Rambus 128Mb RDRAM to achieve 1.6GB/sec data rate for high quality digital imaging.

Other HDTV sets, set-top boxes and digital video players will be introduced for the 2000 Holiday Season, and because the Rambus solution is the most cost effective memory solution, RDRAMs are incorporated in most of these new models to achieve the required high quality digital imaging.

Ik las toevallig bij JC dat onze nationale 'trots' Tulip (ik wist niet eens dat er nog serieus leven in die tent zat) in een press release heeft aangekondigd dat ze een aantal Athlon en Duron systemen voor de professionele markt gaan introduceren. Het eerste systeem dat op de markt komt is de 3000 Euro kostende Vision Line mx met 1,1GHz Thunderbird, 256MB RAM en ATi Radeon videokaart. Voor 1400 Euro heeft Tulip een wat minder heftig modelletje met Athlon 850, 128MB en ATi Rage Fury. Later dit jaar wordt de @ction Line uitgebreid met Duron machines:

Today Tulip Computers (Tulip) has announced that it will introduce PCs based on AMD's Athlon and Duron processors for the professional market. Tulip's professional product range and extended distribution channel in combination with AMD's broad technical knowledge and support will create opportunities for both companies to expand their business into the this market. The first AMD based Tulip PCs have already been shipped.

Synergy Both Tulip and AMD bring particular strength to their co- operation. AMD has recently introduced the Socket A platform for its powerful new seventh generation processors: at the high-end the AMD Athlon, and the AMD Duron in the value PC space. These products fit very well into Tulip's strategy of providing leading edge and reliable technology that offers lasting computing solutions. In addition, Tulip brings a 20-year experience in the European professional IT market and an extended distribution channel to this new co-operation with AMD.

[...] Performance alternative Tulip will be positioning the AMD products as performance alternative to the existing product range based upon an Intel platform. The first model will be the Tulip Vision Line mx with a 1.1GHz Ahtlon CPU, a system that addresses the needs of the high performance user. It will be equipped with a 20 GB high speed drive, 256 MB of memory (PC133), a Combo drive (CD/DVD/CD-RW) and ATI's new Radeon video card with 64MB of DDR SDRAM. The system comes standard with Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Office 2000 SB and is priced at approximately EURO 3000, -.

For the less power-demanding user Tulip will introduce a configuration based upon an Ahtlon 850 MHz, 20 GB hard disk drive, 128 MB of memory (PC133), a CD-ROM drive and an ATI Rage Fury Pro with 32MB. This model will be shipped for approximately EURO 1400, - when pre-installed with Microsoft Windows 2000 and Word 2000.

Later this year Tulip will expand its Tulip @ction Line range with Duron based products. Once the integration is final, Tulip customers will be able to chose between an Intel of an AMD based PC, whether they want a Tulip @ction or Vision Line product.

Training To enable customers to get the maximum benefit out of using its systems, Tulip offers a wide range of services. These vary from on-site repair to online support and even support for installation and transition activities. Further more Tulip provides computer based training (CBT) on all systems. The CBTs are pre-installed and cover current operating systems as well as software applications in several languages. Tulip regards training of the end user as a major contribution to the efficient use of IT in the professional market. It was the first company to pre- install CBTs on all its systems as standard.

Intel chipsets & mobo's

De i850 Tehama chipset wordt deze maand gereleased, nog voor de release van de Pentium 4. Het kan nog enkele maanden duren voordat de eerste Tehama planken op de markt komen, omdat er voorlopig nog geen P4's beschikbaar zijn.

Al in het tweede kwartaal wordt de Tehama chipset opgevolgd door de Tehama-E en Brookdale, die beide geschikt zijn voor de Willamette-478. Tehama-E heeft dezelfde features als de i850, maar wordt geleverd met een nieuwe I/O Controller Hub (ICH3). Brookdale heeft support voor SDRAM, mogelijk ook DDR.

De levering van 440BX en i810 chipsets wordt eind dit jaar eindelijk gestaakt.


VIA chipsets & mobo's

VIA verlaagt mogelijk de produktie van Athlon chipsets om meer chipsets voor de grotere P6-markt te kunnen produceren. Er wordt gespeculeerd dat VIA door het terugschroeven van de Athlon chipset produktie hoopt dat Intel instemt met het geven van een licentie voor de produktie van P4 chipsets. Een mogelijk bewijs hiervoor zijn berichten dat de intro van de KT266 chipset pas 6 maanden na de release van de PM266 (PIII chipset met DDR support) zal plaatsvinden. De release van de PM266 lijkt wat vertraging opgelopen te hebben. Het is de verwachting dat de PM266 pas in december wordt geïntroduceerd.

Het huidige VIA monopolie op de Socket A markt heeft tot gevolg dat de prijzen van deze mobo's vrij hoog zijn. Dit verhinderd het gebruik van Durons in low-end systemen.

AMD chipsets

De AMD 760 chipset wordt deze maand gereleased, waarna de eerste mobo's in oktober leverbaar worden. Zelf hebben we van AMD vernomen dat de 266MHz FSB Tbirds en mobo's eind oktober op de markt komen. Het is twijfelachtig of 760MP dual-Athlon mobo's nog dit jaar leverbaar worden. Het lijkt erop dat AMD absoluut zeker wil zijn over de stabiliteit van de 760MP:

Intel processors

De P4 wordt in het begin van het vierde kwartaal geïntroduceerd op 1,4GHz en 1,5GHz. De leverheid zal in het begin slecht zijn, maar verbeterd tegen het eind van dit jaar. In het eerste kwartaal van 2001 heeft Intel een 1,7GHz+ processor op de planning gezet. De 2GHz P4 volgt al in het tweede kwartaal van volgend jaar.


Tualatin, een nieuwe 0,13micron revisie van de Coppermine core, wordt in het derde kwartaal gereleased op een snelheid van 1,26GHz met een 133MHz FSB. De 800MHz Celeron (mogelijk 100MHz FSB) komt in het eerste kwartaal en de 850MHz in het tweede kwartaal. De 1GHz mobile PIII wordt in het eerste kwartaal gereleased, later gevolgd in het tweede kwartaal gevolgd door een versie met de Tualatin core.

De langverwachte release van de Itanium is uitgesteld door het vierde kwartaal. De kloksnelheid is verlaagd van 800 naar 733. Volgens het huidige plan komt de Itanium 800 pas in het eerste kwartaal van 2001. Foster (Pentium 4 Xeon) komt in het tweede kwartaal en heeft een kloksnelheid van 2GHz met een 256KB L2 cache. Versies met 512KB en 1MB L3 cache komen in het derde kwartaal en hebben kloksnelheden vanaf 1,4GHz. Een pilot release van McKinley, de opvolger van de Itanium, is gepland voor het vierde kwartaal van volgend jaar.

AMD processors

De Duron blijkt erg goed te verkopen, behalve op de Amerikaanse markt. In Azië schijnt de verkoop van Duron processors vier keer zo hoog te zijn als de verkoop van Athlons. Eind dit jaar worden de Mustang, Palomino en Morgan processors gereleased. Details zijn nog schaars.


SDR SDRAM

Het grootste aandeel in de geheugenmarkt blijft voorlopig in handen van good old SDR SDRAM. Rambus en DDR zijn dit jaar goed voor een marktaandeel van elk hooguit 2%. Vanwege een gebrek aan vraag zijn de prijzen de afgelopen maand ligt gedaald. Ook voor de komende maand wordt een kleine daling verwacht. De prijzen blijven echter hoog tot en met het vierde kwartaal.

DDR SDRAM

AMD en Micron hebben nog steeds vertrouwen dat er in het vierde kwartaal een gezonde levering van DDR DIMMs op gang komt. Tot op heden is hier echter nog niet veel van te merken. Tevens zijn er berichten over compatibiliteits problemen bij bepaalde chipsets en DDR reepjes. Direct Rambus DRAM

Hyundai heeft zijn plannen om Rambus chipset te produceren voorlopig in de ijskast gezet. Infineon en Micron hebben nog steeds geen chips geproduceerd. Samsung, Toshiba en NEC produceren weliswaar, maar de output is erg laag in vergelijking met de totale wereldwijde DRAM produktie. Ondanks de sterke daling van de Rambus prijzen, lijkt er nog steeds weinig vraag naar dit type geheugen te zijn. Intel hoopt dat dit veranderd als de Pentium 4 wordt gereleased.
