Ondanks de beperkte ruchtbaarheid die Microsoft aan de release van Windows Millennium heeft gegeven, zijn er volgens onderzoek van PC Data in de eerste vier dagen na de release 250.000 exemplaren verkocht op de Amerikaanse markt. PC Data verwacht dat er deze maand 400.000 dozen over de toonbank vliegen. Voor het eind van dit jaar zullen er meer dan 1 miljoen units verkocht zijn:

Windows 95 and 98 sold 600,000 copies in stores in their first month and 2 million in their first six months on the market, Reston, Va.-based PC Data wrote in the report.
[...] Still, analysts expect many consumers to wait for the next version of Windows, code-named Whistler, to come out next year. Whistler will represent a huge change for home Windows users because Microsoft is abandoning the underlying code that made up home operating systems Windows 95 and 98 in favor of the more stable code in Windows NT and 2000, its business operating systems. Microsoft has said Whistler won't be a huge change for current Windows 2000 users, though.
