SysReview heeft een artikeltje gepost met een paar interessant benchmarks van een 700MHz Athlon Classic op een overgeklokte frontside bus van 266MHz. Deze extreem hoge busclock werd bereikt op een Abit KA7 met BIOS versie TY. De snellere FSB had in Quake III een 8,14% hogere framerate tot resultaat. Dit lijkt misschien weinig, maar staat wel gelijk aan het verschil tussen een Athlon 800 en Athlon 950. Quake III heeft zich al eerder bewezen als een zwaar FSB- en geheugen-bandwidth gevoelige game. De SiSoft Sandra memory benchmark behaalde met de snellere FSB een 2,9% hoger resultaat. De SiSoft CPU en Multimedia tests noteerden nauwelijks een verschil.
De benchmarks zijn overigens niet representatief voor de snelheid van een 266MHz AMD 760 of KX266 plankje met DDR SDRAM, omdat het geheugen nog steeds op een trage 133MHz liep. De verhouding tussen FSB en geheugen bandbreedte loopt daardoor totaal mank, waardoor een grote performance-boost niet te verwachten is. De verbeteringen in Quake III beloven in ieder geval een leuke verbetering voor Tbirds met 266MHz FSB en geheugen:

It appears that not many current Athlon motherboards can reach this speed, but if you can find one that can then any application that craves memory bandwidth will receive a big boost.
