SuSE Linux meldt dat het bedrijf een overeenkomst zal aangaan met VMware. Al eerder schreven we over een samenwerking tussen Microsoft en VMware, maar hier heb ik later nooit meer iets van gehoord. Misschien dat deze samenwerking wel wat gaat worden. SuSE wil graag gezamelijke verkoop en marketingactiviteiten:
SuSE Linux, the international technology leader and solutions provider in Open Source (OS) operating system software, today announced an agreement with VMware, Inc. to expand their relationship and pursue joint sales and marketing activities. Under the terms of this agreement, SuSE will deliver VMware software locally to its more than 5000 VARs, retailers and system houses all over Europe. SuSE will also provide local service and support for VMware across Europe.
With more than 400,000 users in over 100 countries, VMware's virtual machine technology has been established since its introduction a year ago as an efficient and straightforward way to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single PC. "VMware has a brilliant technology, which has the potential to increase professional productivity greatly," says Roland Dyroff, SuSE Linux AG CEO. "We are happy to be working with VMware to distribute their software."[break]Voor degenen die dat niet weten, VMware is een programma waarmee je meer dan één besturingssysteem tegelijk kan draaien. Zo heb je bijvoorbeeld een Linux-venster in Windows 2000. Erg handig, want je kan knippen en plakken tussen verschillende OS's, iets wat normaal nooit mogelijk zou zijn. Ander voorbeeld is Linux gebruiken voor de stabiliteit en even in een Windows-venster een programma gebruiken dat het onder Linux niet doet:[/break]VMware's technology virtualizes the x86 architecture to create multiple VMware virtual machines. Since VMware is not an emulator, but instead uses the real OS for respective applications, it achieves a great degree of compatibility. VMware technology allows PCs to be more flexible and leveraged, by permitting access to applications on other platforms.

Bovendien kun je een complete systeem configuratie inclusief harddisk in 1 imagefile opslaan zodat je met een grote harddisk kan switchen tussen talloze machines, wat in een bedrijf met database servers e.d. ideaal is. Het is mooi dat een wat groter bedrijf als SuSE VMWare een commerciele impuls kan geven, want VMWare 2.0 is schitterend

niet één Windows NT machine met daarop Citrix Metaframe (of zoiets). :strip_exif()/u/727/dark5.gif?f=community){kind=small}
(als je genoeg ram hebt). Linux (suse 6.1)heb ik ook geprobeerd, maar x wilde niet starten. Misschien een driver problem
moest ook wel met die snelheid. Ik ga die driver even testen, tnx. worst
