De EE Times meldt dat DMC Stratex Networks deze week in San Francisco een nieuwe point-to-point radioverbinding van 311MBit gaat onthullen. Het systeem werkt met één enkele radio op de 38GHz band en kan gebruikt worden voor ATM en dubbel OC3. Dankzij een nieuw chipontwerp in plaats van een aantal parallelle chips wordt de hoge snelheid bereikt. Het bereik van het systeem is vier tot vijf kilometer, vele malen meer dan dat van optische systemen. Ook heeft het geen last van straling of weersomstandigheden. De kosten zijn zo'n $70.000 per link:

Little was referring to the company's Vantex modem chip set effort, which condenses "a large amount" of on-board circuitry to two chips. The chip set uses forward error correction and adaptive equalization to improve throughput while allowing software programmability of the quadrature amplitude modulation scheme from 4 to 256 QAM. This gives rates between 4 and 311 Mbits/s.

"We are the only ones capable of 256-level QAM," said Little. "While the initial versions will be static, programmable versions are next, as are 622-Mbit/s systems in the near future."

De Automatiseringsgids meldt dat IBM een nieuwe opslagsysteem voor netwerken gebaseerd heeft op TCP/IP. De IP Storage 200i moet het marktaandeel op dat gebied vergroten, ondanks het feit dat de op dit moment gebruikte Fibre Channel verbindingen sneller zijn. Marktleider EMC denkt dat het nog wel twee jaar kan duren voor TCP/IP oplossingen volwassen zijn. Toch zijn de specs niet mis; het 200i model heeft een dubbele Pentium III 800MHz en kan tot 1,74TB aan data opslaan. Daarvoor wordt gebruik gemaakt van 10.000rpm Ultra160 SCSI drives en gigabit ethernet:

IBM geeft toe dat het om een ontluikende technologie gaat. Daarom ook is de IP Storage 200i, zoals het nieuwe opslagsysteem heet, bedoeld voor de onderkant van de markt. De basisprijs is ongeveer twintigduizend dollar. De levering komt nog in de eerste helft van dit jaar op gang.

Bij Beyond3D staat een persbericht van Imagination Technologies, waarin ze de PowerVR MBX aankondigen. Deze is ontwikkeld voor ARM, producent van embedded processors. De MBX heeft aantal voordelen boven de huidige Kyro chip, zoals een toegevoegde VGP (Vector Geometry Processor) die hardware T&L moet gaan verzorgen. De nieuwe chip is uitermate geschikt voor System on Chip (SoC) toepassingen door het lage stroomgebruik en het compacte ontwerp. Volgens een woordvoerder van ARM is het binnenkort mogelijk om PC- en consolespellen te spelen op bijvoorbeeld telefoons en PDA's, iets waar Sega ook al mee bezig is:

Steve Evans, VP Business Segment Marketing, ARM, said: "With an industry-leading ARM core and PowerVR MBX solution, it will soon be possible for a mobile device to play games with all the features of the latest PC and console titles. AMD is dan wel niet gekozen als leverancier voor de processors van de Xbox (wat ze overigens niet erg vinden, in een recent interview gaven ze aan dat ze toch niet aan de vraag zouden kunnen voldoen), maar dat wil niet zeggen dat er alleen Intel technologie gebruikt zal worden. Dankzij nVidia zal de LDT HyperTransport bus in de spelcomputer terecht komen, zo meldt MSXbox. De MCPX, die verantwoordelijk is voor audio en communicatie, gebruikt een 1,6GTransfers/s versie van de nieuwe bus:

HyperTransport technology is designed to let the chips inside of PCs, as well as in networking and communications devices, communicate with each other up to 24 times faster than existing technology allows. It is a point-to-point bus technology that offers greater bandwidth, such as from the memory controller to the hard driver controller or PCI (peripheral component interconnect) bus controller.

Engineers can now design the link in each direction and decide the width of the bus and the clock rate of the system in order to deliver the desired bits and bytes needed. The maximum configuration is 1.6G transfers per second. Will the Xbox be fast?- you bet.

Techweb bericht dat de eerste op de Transmeta Crusoe TM5400 gebaseerde servers inmiddels verkrijgbaar zijn. De Canadese firma Rebel.com biedt deze kleine servers inmiddels onder de naam NetWinder 3100 op de markt aan. Voor wie nu achter z'n oor krabt en zich afvraagt waar 'ie de naam NetWinder eerder gehoord heeft: dit zijn inderdaad dezelfde kleine kastjes zoals die door Corel rond 1999 werden aangeboden, toen echter gebaseerd op een StrongARM 275MHz RISC-processor, nu dus met een Transmeta Crusoe TM5400 op 533MHz.

En om meteen maar door te gaan op de verpakking: de NetWinder is helaas nog niet verkrijgbaar als 19" rackmount, maar die is al wèl aangekondigd, en dat lijkt ook één van de voornaamste inzetgebieden voor deze kleine machines. De 19"/1HU versie wordt met name interessant voor 'grootgebruikers', aangezien er twee complete NetWinders in één 1U rack-module passen, en dat betekent erg veel machines op een minimale ruimte en met - ook belangrijk - een minimale stroomconsumptie van 14W per systeem.

De prijs voor het desktop annex micro-tower model is ook al bekend: US$1795 voor een modelletje met 128MB en 10GB, $2295 voor een doosje met 256MB en 20GB. De NetWinder is voorts standaard voorzien van drie 100Base/T netwerk-interfaces, 2 USB- 2 seriële- en één parallele poorten. Daarnaast zit de Linux 2.4 kernel ingebakken in 4MB flash-ROM. De performance is volgens de fabrikant vergelijkbaar met die van een Intel Pentium III op 400MHz.

The server consumes only 14 watts of power, which is about one-quarter the consumption of similar x86-compatible servers, company executives said.

The 3100 comes in a micro-tower configuration, with up to 256 Mbytes of RAM, a 10- or 20-Gbyte hard drive, and three Ethernet connections. It is aimed at small-business applications and offers a choice of Internet connectivity including DSL, cable, ISDN, PPP, and dial-up. Other features include a five-stage firewall and remote network access via a VPN.

The classic application of the 3100 will be sitting on the end of a DSL connection, said Whitehead. "If a server is used on a 24/7 basis, heat and space consumption are important," he said.

Within the next few months, Rebel.com expects to unveil a rack-mount version of its Crusoe-based server, the NetWinder 3400, said Whitehead. The 1U form factor (about 1.75 inches high) enclosure will include two complete servers, each with a Crusoe processor and a 30- or 60-Gbyte 3.5-inch hard drive, he said.

The NetWinder servers include the Linux 2.4 kernel on the motherboard and supports Windows, Macintosh, Unix, and Linux clients, said Whitehead.

X-Bit labs heeft een aanvulling geschreven op haar harddisk-roundup van zeven IDE-harddisks, die ook hier op Tweakers al is behandeld. In de eerste roundup ontbraken IBM-producten, en die omissie heeft men nu goedgemaakt door alsnog twee IBM schijven te vergelijken met de eerder verkregen resultaten, dit alles onder het motto HDD test: IBM vs. The rest of the world.

De twee testkandidaten zijn de IBM Deskstar 40GV en de Deskstar 75GXP. De IBM 75GXP is wellicht de bekendste, hier in de 30GB versie met 7200rpm, 2MB buffer en 15GB per platter. De Deskstar 40GV is een 20GB model met één 20GB platter, 512kB buffer, en maakt 5400 rondjes per minuut.

Beide schijven werden uitgebreid getest en de resultaten werden afgezet tegen de eerder verkregen resultaten. Hierbij bleek met name de 75GXP het boven verwachting goed te doen (zeker omdat 'ie eigenlijk tot een al wat oudere generatie behoort), de 40GV deed het gewoon goed. Beide schijven, en zeker de 75GXP, waren bijna altijd sneller dan de concurrentie, getuige ook de volgende conclusie:

Strange as it might seem, but IBM Deskstar 75GXP (DTLA 307020), an older generation HDD with 15GB platters, turned out faster than its more modern competitors with 20GB platters almost in all the tests.

IBM Deskstar 40GV (DTLA 305020) performed not as brilliant as its elder brother and yielded a bit to WD Protege (WD200EB) with a four times larger cache-buffer. All the others were beaten in all the tests. We would also like to point out that this HDD showed very good results in a "server" test - Intel IOMeter. According to it, IBM Deskstar 40GV (DTLA 305020) is capable of running close to Quantum Fireball Plus AS and WD Caviar (WD200BB), i.e. performs just like the faster drives with 7200rpm.

Bij Hardwareinfo.net is zojuist een flinke vergelijkingstest verschenen van maar liefst 13 cd-branders. Het gros van de deelnemers valt in de categorie '12 speed IDE fikkers', al dan niet met een anti-bufferunderrun beschermlaag. De reviewer heeft elk exemplaar getest, waarvan je de resultaten in een handige tabel terug kunt vinden. Er wordt geconcludeerd dat de meeste 12x BurnProof branders onderling weinig verschillen, waardoor je vooral naar de prijs en de bijgeleverde software zult moeten kijken. De Lite-On LTR12101B wordt op deze punten aanbevolen. De 16x PlexWriter van Plextor is uiteraard de beste koop, maar hoeft niet voor iedereen een noodzaak te zijn. Als je maar af en toe een cd'tje bakt is de 12 speed LG CED8120B voor 399 piek een koopje. Hieronder meer info uit de conclusie:

Met het testen en vergelijken van deze 13 branders hebben we een groot deel, van datgene wat er momenteel te krijgen is, besproken. Het is niet interessant om elk model te testen omdat er vaak maar kleine verschillen zijn. Zo zien we dat de geteste Burn Proof-branders allemaal op elkaar lijken op de meegeleverde software en de prijs na. Wilt u bijvoorbeeld een 12X speed Burn Proof-brander aanschaffen dan adviseren wij goed te kijken naar wat er meegeleverd wordt en tegen welke prijs. Uitblinker bij de geteste Burn Proof-branders is de LiteOn LTR12101B. Voor slechts 565 gulden mag u deze brander meenemen uit de winkel en dan hebt u direct ook tien lege CDR’s!

Wilt u helemaal met de tijd meegaan en de snelste brander aanschaffen die momenteel verkrijgbaar is, dan adviseer ik de Plexwriter 16/10/40A. Deze IDE-brander is twee tientjes duurder dan de Yamaha CRW2100E, maar is wel voorzien van Burn Proof-technologie en kan ook echt de hele CD op 16X speed branden! Waitec heeft met de T-Rex ook een Burn Proof-brander die, mede door de SCSI-uitvoering, naar mijn mening veel te duur is. Zoals de resultaten van de benchmarks laten zien is het tegenwoordig niet echt interessant meer om een SCSI-brander te kopen, zeker niet als u momenteel nog geen SCSI-adapter hebt. Indien zo weinig mogelijk belasting van het systeem geëist wordt en men ook al in het bezit is van een SCSI-adapter, dan zou het interessant kunnen zijn om een SCSI-brander (zoals de Waitec Raptor of T-Rex) aan te schaffen. De vraag is dan natuurlijk of u met een SCSI-brander wel Burn Proof-technologie nodig heeft omdat de PC toch al tijdens het brandproces wat extra belast mag worden.

VIA Hardware heeft een preview gemaakt over de VIA PX266 Pentium 4 chipset. Momenteel heeft VIA nog geen licentie van Intel om deze chipset op de markt te brengen, maar via S3 / SonicBlue beweert het bedrijf toch de PX266 te kunnen introduceren, waarschijnlijk in het derde kwartaal.

De PX266 zal compatible zijn met zowel de bestaande P4 (Willamette) als de nieuwe .13micron Northwood versie. Die laatste kan dan ook in SMP configuraties werken, wat samen met de 133MHz QDR bus voor flink wat rekenkracht zal gaan zorgen. De geheugenbus is gebaseerd op die van de Pro266 en de KT266, je kunt er dus PC100/133 SDR en PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM op kwijt.

In het artikel kun je verder nog wat lezen over de opvolger van de PX266, de Pro2002. Deze zal ondersteuning krijgen voor o.a. DDR333 en Intel's Infiniband technologie. In het high-end segment zal deze chipset de Foster ondersteunen, en later de Prestonia en evt. de McKinley. Lees hieronder vast een stuk uit de conclusie:

For PX266 to be the run-away success Pro133A was, VIA must get the timing right. The competition is much more on their toes, and Intel has expressed a desire to launch their DDR supporting Brookdale earlier then the Q1 2002 originally planned. However, RAMBUS and its legal team still stands in the way, as Intel must sell more RDRAM supporting chipsets then SDRAM supporting chipsets to get their RAMBUS stock bonus. Thus, Intel will limit the number of Brookdale SDR's and DDR's that are available in the channel.

SiS and ALi are a ways behind VIA, and don't look to have a realistic chance at launching their chipsets in the year 2001. Also, their chipsets are notably less feature-rich then the PX266, with the exception of ALi's AGP8X specification on the M1661. If they truly insist on going ahead with developing an AGP8X part, I expect they will delay M1661 to a point where it is no longer viable.

On a related note, VIA has confirmed that it will NOT be launching PX266 at the upcoming Cebit, March 22nd. Instead, they will be focusing on their Samuel 2 Cyrix III part.

Bij Overclockers Online is een bespreking verschenen over een flink aantal producten van Quiet PC. Quiet PC is producent van een flink aantal producten die speciaal ontworpen zijn om zo stil mogelijk te zijn, of de geluidsproductie van je PC te verminderen.

Zo bouwen ze 230, 250 en 300 Watt voedingen die minder dan 26 decibel produceren. Verder maken ze ook nog enkele CPU koelers voor AMD en Intel processors. Deze koelers zijn uitgerust met een slim ontwerp en een stille 3500rpm fan. Jammer genoeg is het een koeler die de temperatuur van een AMD CPU tot en met 60 graden laat oplopen, 11 graden meer dan de FOP38, dus niet echt geschikt om te overclocken. Verder komt er nog een 80mm kast koeler voorbij die slechts 20 decibel produceert (onhoorbaar), en een behuizing om het geluid van je hardeschijf effectief te dempen. De reviewer is erg blij met deze spullen, een erg stille PC kan je er zeker mee bouwen :

If I tell you these fans are quiet, I really mean QUIET! They produce about 20dB, which is as good as nothing! When I turn them on and I hold them next to my ear, I still can't hear them (I almost lost a piece of my ear because of this test ). Because they are only rotating at 1600rpm, they are providing a breeze of 28cfm which is good enough to get cold air into your case. These fans are also very good if you use watercooling. You can use them to cool the radiator and that way your system stays quiet. Most watercoolers are silent, but then you see noisy fans on the radiator destroying all the other efforts of getting a quiet pc ...

[...] You probably guessed that I am very satisfied from the Quiet PC products. If you are looking for the perfect way to make your computer totally silent, then these products are what you need! The cpu coolers perform well if you do not plan on overclocking much, but that is not what they are designed to do. They are designed to cool your cpu silently and that is what they do best heh. The power supply performs just the way you expect a 300W P/S to perform, but unlike many other power supplies, this one is silent. The Silent Drive hard drive enclosure manages to decrease the annoying hard drive noise by several dB's, which is always a good thing!

Tim Zakharov van Storage Review brengt ons een review van de Yamaha CRW2100S. Deze SCSI-brander heeft een erg relaxte snelheid van 16/10/40. Uit een review van de IDE-versie van deze brander bleek dat er nogal wat minpunten waren. Zo bleek de 10x CAV rewrite snelheid erg teleurstellend en ook het ontbreken van een anti-bufferunderrun techniek was erg vervelend. De resultaten van dit SCSI-model laten ongeveer dezelde mankementen zien. De conclusie van de reviewer luidt dan ook dat je deze brander alleen moet aanschaffen als je persé een 16X SCSI-brander wil (inclusief hevige trillingen en een hoop lawaai), maar anders kun je nog maar beter even wachten:

Yamaha's SCSI entry in the high-speed CD-RW market has a lot going for it. First off, it's 16X and SCSI. Second, it claims 40X Max read speeds. Third, it claims 40X Max audio extraction. Finally, it advertises 10X rewrite speeds. All are either milestones or industry standards in recording/rewriting technology. Unfortunately, there are issues in all areas.

First, Yamaha chose partial CAV writes instead of full 16X CLV writes as competitors have debuted. In practice, this results in a paltry 15 second difference when burning 650 MB; the implication, however, is that the consumer gets less than what's advertised. Write and rewrite speeds up to this point have always been CLV - when one saw "12X" on the package, 12X was what one got. Yamaha puts "16X" in bold print on the front of their box, leaving the details in the fine print. If the other manufacturers took the P-CAV route because of some technical limitation inherent to achieving such speeds, this would be a non-issue. But 16X CLV drives from Plextor and TDK have already arrived with more on the way.

Next, we could not achieve 40X read speeds on pressed media. Only when we test with a custom-made 700 MB CD-R can we reach 40X at the outer edge. The drive also spins down frequently in operations involving random accesses. In some cases this brings performance levels down below what we've measured from competitors' 32X offerings.

Volgens The Register is Microsoft druk doende om haar nieuwe Windows XP (wijlen Windows Whistler) te voorzien van support voor de Transmeta Crusoe processor. Eerder gebeurde dit al voor AMD's Sledgehammer, één en ander tot ongenoegen van Intel natuurlijk.

De recente beta-versie van Whistler bevatte het bestand crusoe.dll, dat door MS omschreven wordt als een "processor device driver". Dit zou inderdaad betekenen dat Windows XP al vanaf haar release de Crusoe zal ondersteunen, en dit impliceert dan weer dat we Windows XP dus ook kunnen gaan verwachten in Crusoe-typische hardware als sub-notebooks:

Microsoft's developers have helpfully tagged the file as a "processor device driver," so indeed it is that Crusoe that's being catered for.

Intel mightn't be best pleased about this, especially coming on top of recent revelations here about WinXP Sledgehammer support, but then the Wintel alliance is largely based on mutual suspicion, going on loathing, anyway.

The Microsoft Crusoe development work is no doubt associated with the likes of the Tablet PC project Microsoft showed off at Comdex last year.

The prospect of WinXP in lighter, more portable devices may also incidentally provide some kind of explanation for Microsoft's recent interest in 800x600 screen resolutions, mightn't it?

Bij Tom's Hardware Guide is een KT133A moederborden roundup online geplaatst, met daarin de AOpen AK73-1394 (A), Asus A7V133, IWill KK266-R, MSI K7T Turbo, NMC 8TTX+, de Soyo SY-K7VTA Pro en de Tyan Trinity KT-A . De plankjes werden kort besproken en vervolgens gebenchmarked met SysMark, Quake III, Mercedes Benz Truck Racing en ViewPerf.

Uiteindelijk concludeert de reviewer dat je met vrijwel elk KT133A moederbord over betrouwbaar product beschikt, zelfs de goedkopere Soltek, DFI en Azza types zijn prima betrouwbaar. Wil je echter het neusje van de zalm dan wordt toch de Asus A7V133 aangeraden, die met de nieuwe 1002 BIOS nog wat sneller is geworden. Indien je liever een iets betere prijs/prestatie verhouding wilt kan Patrick Schmid je de AOpen AK73-1394 en IWill's KK266-R aanbevelen:

The initial review did not reveal too many differences between the boards. Now, with a new Asus BIOS released and new, strong competitors, the formerly tested boards cannot always keep pace with the newcomers.

Asus proved very well that a simple BIOS update can tremendously improve the system overall performance. In terms of performance and overclocking, Asus managed to gain the crown of this review on the second try.

However, my two personal favorites are the AOpen AK73-1394 and IWill's KK266-R. Both have a much better price/performance ratios than the Asus A7V133, giving you similar features and overclocking capabilities. AOpen is the only manufacturer that includes a FireWire controller. That is particularly important for people who want to use external storage solutions or video devices. Also the possible Vcore range goes down to 1.1 V, which is an excellent basis for future Athlon CPUs.

IWill also comes with a great and reliable motherboard, good performance and a complete shipment.

Everybody who is looking for a cheap motherboard should consider Soltek, DFI or Azza. They all run absolutely reliable as well. If you do not need any special features, you should be content with those boards, as none of them has a real disadvantage.

Felix tipte ons over een artikeltje op Yahoo! News waarin Microsoft uitleg geeft over de uitspraken van Jim Allchin over Open-Source software, zoals hij dit vorige week gedaan heeft. Allchin, bij MS verantwoordelijk voor de operating systems, kwam toen tot de conclusie dat Open Source intellectueel eigendom dreigt te vernietigen. Hierop werd vanuit de Open Source community furieus gereageerd.

Allchin is volgens MS niet verkeerd geciteerd, maar verkeerd begrepen. Volgens Microsoft gaat het niet om open-source in het algemeen, maar over de GNU GPL-licentie. Microsoft heeft met bijvoorbeeld de BSD-license geen problemen. Het probleem met GNU/GPL zit 'm voor Microsoft in het feit dat je zodra je ook maar een paar regels code gebruikt die onder deze licentie zijn vrijgegeven je zelf ook je eindproduct onder GNU/GPL moet licenseren. In de praktijk zou dat er op neer komen dat Microsoft indien het GNU/GPL-code in bijvoorbeeld een eigen OS zou integreren, het hele OS vervolgens onder GNU/GPL licentie als Open Source zou moeten worden uitgebracht, inclusief de door MS zelf ontwikkelde code. En daar heeft men natuurlijk geen zin in:

Allchin's concerns, eWEEK was told, stem from GPL paragraph (2B), which states, "You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge to all third parties under the terms of this License."

In other words, Microsoft representatives warned, "anyone who adds or innovates under the GPL agrees to make the resulting code, in its entirety, available for all to use ... [which] might constrain innovating stemming from taxpayer-funded software development."

Allchin, according to the company, does not have the same concerns about all open-source approaches in general. "There are other kinds of open-source licenses that encourage third-party development but without the same constraints, including the BSD license," Microsoft representatives said.

WebWereld meldt dat het Web3D Consortium een standaard wil ontwikkelen voor het verspreiden van 'rich media content' over internet. Hiervoor heeft men een speciale werkgroep in het leven geroepen, genaamd de Rich Media 3D werkgroep (RM3D). Sony heeft al veel technologie ontwikkeld voor de RM3D-specificatie. Eén van de door Sony ontwikkelde technieken die waarschijnlijk door de RM3D-werkgroep overgenomen zal worden is Blendo. Blendo is een manier om 'rich media content' te ontwikkelen en te breken. Ook is het waarschijnlijk dat de MPEG-4 techniek zal worden geïntegreerd in de standaard, evenals VRML. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel:

"Het is belangrijk dat er op dit gebied duidelijke afspraken gemaakt worden", zegt Neil Trevett, directeur van het Web3D Consortium. "Daarbij gaat het dan om een standaard voor allerlei soorten internettoepassingen, maar ook om bijvoorbeeld settop boxen voor de televisie."

Fabrikanten van multimedia-apparatuur en bedrijven die zich bezighouden met het ontwikkelen van 'rich media content' hebben een stevige vinger in de pap. Sony, 3DLabs, ATI Technologies en Shout Interactive LCC vormt een greep uit de bedrijven die zich bezighouden met het ontwikkelen van de standaard.

Wat doe je als je net 8000 gulden hebt besteed aan de nieuwe Titanium Powerbook? Uit elkaar halen natuurlijk. Tenminste, als je een reviewer van MacWorld bent. Matthew Witheiler van AnandTech heeft een vergelijkend artikel over de multi-monitor functies van grafische kaarten geschreven. In het uitgebreide artikel gaat hij in op de drivers en de mogelijkheden daarvan, Windows 2000 support en de mogelijkheden van een multi-monitor setup. De ATi Radeon VE, Matrox G450 en de GeForce2 MX worden onder de loep genomen. Opvallend om te zien is dat de drivers niet dezelfde mogelijkheden bieden onder verschillende besturingssystemen (Windows 98 en 2000). Als je geen games speelt is volgens onderstaande conclusie de Matrox G450 de beste keuze:

Of the solutions out there now in their current form, the line between the ATI Radeon VE and the Matrox G450 DualHead is much narrower than the line between these cards and the GeForce2 MX. NVIDIA still has quite a bit to work on in order to make their TwinView solution up to snuff. Items such as global application memory, a multiple desktop utility, and more easily accessible functions need to be implemented before TwinView can be considered a serious competitor to ATI and Matrox.

The software solution by ATI as well as the solution by Matrox are very stable. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Currently, however, the Matrox software seems to be a slight step above ATI's HydraVision. Things like DVDMax, advanced zooming functions, custom monitor configurations, and easily accessible schemes give the Matrox DualHead software a slight edge.

Het volk van Legion Hardware is de eerste die een review heeft gemaakt van de nieuwe Thermaltake Volcano II. De koeler is geschikt voor Socket A processors. Opvallend is dat het een traditionele heatsink is met gewoon een flinke fan er bovenop. De fan draait 4500 rondjes per minuut en zorgt voor een airflow van 36CFM. In tegenstelling tot de Orbs maakt de Volcano II weinig lawaai. Over de installatie was men niet echt te spreken, omdat de koeler gebruik maakte van 'that annoying AMD certified cooler clip' waarvoor je een schroevendraaier nodig hebt om hem te installeren.

De testresultaten waren nogal verrassend. De Volcano II behaalde de laagste idle temperatuur, maar in de stress test moest de koeler genoegen nemen met een derde plaats (onder de Global WIN FOP38 en de ALPHA PEP66):

Sitting right in the middle of the ALPHA PEP66T and the Super Orb gives the Volcano II a nice place to sit in the rankings (For a $37 HSF). I tried to use the Delta 6800RPM fan to increase performance, which I have tried to do with other coolers. Unfortunately this just resulted in 2-3 degrees just like all the other coolers that I have tried to improve by adding the delta. However those few degrees less almost let the Volcano II touch shoulders with the ALPHA PEP66T, which is, valued a $75!!!!!! (AUD).

The Volcano II has been the best Thermaltake product we have reviewed to date. The results were average when compared to the Global WIN FOP38 but then the Volcano II is $15 cheaper than the FOP38. One thing I loved about the Volcano II was its extremely low operating volume, with the case on you didn’t even know it was on, my power supply fan was louder. The Volcano II easily out performed Thermaltake’s previous flagship cooler by more than 5 degrees and Volcano II are also cheaper than the Super Orb. The Volcano II is a good cooler for its price tag and should earn Thermaltake some respect in the cooling game. Also keep an eye on other new Thermaltake products like the Volcano (Pentium 4 Cooler), Indigo Orb (Pentium 4 Cooler) and the Mini-Super Orb (New revision of the Super Orb).

Op Yahoo is te lezen dat Intel gisteren bekend heeft gemaakt om te gaan bezuinigen. In verband met een slechtere marktsituatie zal de chipbakker dit jaar de kosten met honderden miljoenen dollars gaan verlagen. De uitgaven voor investeringen, onderzoek en ontwikkeling blijven wel op peil maar er zullen geen werknemers meer worden aangenomen tenzij het absoluut noodzakelijk is. Ook zullen de jaarlijkse verhogingen van de prestatiebeloning worden uitgesteld of gehalveerd. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel:

Patrick Simonis wist ons te melden dat er bij C|NET een korte review is geplaatst van de Sonicblue Rio Volt portable MP3 cd-speler. Het apparaat heeft een erg strak design en is in staat om ID3 Tags weer te geven. Verder heeft hij volgens de reviewer een erg gebruiksvriendelijke bediening en wordt er een handige afstandsbedieding meegeleverd. Om te voorkomen dat de muziek overslaat kan er maximaal 40 seconde vooruitgelezen worden, wat op een ingebouwde flashkaart gesaved wordt. Afgezien van de draagtas was men dus zeer te spreken over de Sonicblue Rio Volt, hij kreeg een 9/10:

If we can single out one problem with the Volt, it would have to be the carrying case, which must be threaded through your belt if you want to attach it to your hip. (The player itself doesn't have a belt clip.) While the player is in the case, you can't tell which song is playing or whether the player is on or off, since there's no display on the remote control. But at $169, the Rio Volt has to be one of the best portable audio values around. Unless you really need a very small, light MP3 player for exercise or travel, multiformat CD players such as this one are the way to go, since they're cheaper and hold many more songs on a single CD. Some other players cost a little less than the Rio, but its ability to play every type of MP3/WMA CD-R and CD-RW that we burned definitely makes it your best bet.

Napster heeft gisteren haar nieuwe plannen bekend gemaakt die ze vanaf deze zomer wil invoeren. De dienst die ze levert zal er enigszins door veranderen, aangezien gebruikers voortaan een abonnement zullen moeten nemen. De muziekindustrie kan hierdoor gecompenseerd worden, en wel voor 1 miljard dollar voor de komende vijf jaar. Althans, dat is het bod dat Napster heeft gemaakt:

Those dynamics could change if fewer people were to use the service, however, because it would mean far fewer songs available for download.
