iXBT Labs heeft een overzicht online gezet waarin ze de belangrijkste gebeurtenissen en geruchten op het gebied van hardware deze maand samenvatten. Verder is er een tabel te bewonderen waarin alle DDR borden en hun features op een rijtje worden gezet. Ook interessant is om te lezen dat de Athlon Ultra (Mustang) volgens iXBT in november wordt gereleased op een kloksnelheid van 1,4GHz. Hieronder een paar kleine indrukken:

Mainboards:
As far as the performance of the three already announced DDR Athlon chipsets is concerned, AMD 760 seems to be the fastest of all. Then come VIA KT266 and then ALi MAGiK 1, which will be another bit slower. However, the performance difference between the systems built on these chipsets will hardly exceed 5%, which is incomparable with a 20% performance gain provided by the use of DDR SDRAM.

VIAHardware.com heeft een review geschreven van de Iwill KV200, een socket A mobo gebaseerd op de (duh) VIA KT133 chipset met 1 AGP / 5 PCI / 1 AMR. Het bord bleek stabiel en goed te presteren, alleen zijn er wat weinig overclockopties (alleen FSB wijzigen, en zoals iedereen nu wel weet geeft dat niet zo'n hoog resultaat bij AMD-processoren).

With performance that is on par with the best of the KT133 based motherboards on the market, the Iwill has a board to be proud of. This is a good board for the average PC builder that just wants a dependable and stable motherboard. However, without adjustments for the multiplier, AGP/PCI ratios, and core voltage Iwill isn't going to take the place of an Abit KT7 or Asus A7V on an overclocker's wish list.

Digital Silence vertelt ons dat Hitachi weer een stapje verder gaat met de Flash-geheugentechnologie. Hitachi brengt twee nieuwe producten uit: een 128MB (Compact-) Flashcard - heel handig voor digitale cameragebruikers en MP3-ers - en een 2GB PC-ATA Flash-kaart, een vervanging voor harde schijven. Beiden zijn gebaseerd op Hitachi's nieuwe 512Mbit Flash-geheugen, waardoor de kaartjes minder vermogen zouden verbruiken:

Bij Yahoo!Finance is te lezen dat Sony haar eerste VAIO notebook onder de $1400 introduceert, en dit is gelijk ook de eerste ervaring van Sony met AMD-processoren. Er zijn twee nieuwe modellen, allebei met de gebruikelijke iLink-poort (IEEE1394). De notebooks draaien op AMD K6-2+ processoren van 550MHz. Hoewel het om 'budget'-notebooks gaat, worden de modellen toch met een TFT scherm geleverd (van 12.1" of 13.1"). Ook hoort een heel pakket software, vooral op het gebied van foto en video, bij de notebooks:

WebWereld heeft een interessant artikel gepost over de bevindingen van VersaPoint over het falende KPN netwerk. Volgens het bedrijf zijn KPN's smoezen over haar netwerk volledig ongegrond; het net van de KPN zou een van de meest geschikte in de wereld zijn. De problemen worden dan ook veroorzaakt worden door de niet goed werkende webgateway, aldus VersaPoint:

"Er is geen wereldwijd probleem met de levering van DSL aan klanten", zegt Bakhshandeh, die zelf betrokken is geweest bij de introductie van DSL in de Verenigde Staten, Duitsland en nu Nederland. "Het telefoonnetwerk hier is beter dan dat in de Verenigde Staten."

"De problematiek bij KPN heeft niets te maken met DSL-techniek, maar met de schaalbaarheid van de webgateway", vervolgt Bakhshandeh. Mxstream-klanten moeten op een aparte pagina inloggen voor ze online kunnen, en daar zit volgens VersaPoint de crux. VersaPoint heeft zelf geen webgateway. "Wij verbinden klanten direct met internet."

Volgens Bakhshandeh is het Nederlandse telefoonnet zo goed ingericht dat klanten optimaal kunnen profiteren van ADSL. "De loops zijn hier heel kort. Wij kunnen echt de volle twee megabit per seconde bieden", aldus Bakhshandeh.

Bo Nobo schrijft: "Vandaag werd door IBM bekend gemaakt, dat zij de grootste investering uit de geschiedenis van het bedrijf gaan doen. Plannen zijn er om een grote half-geleider fabriek te bouwen in de staat New York.
Er zullen onder meer half-geleiders geproduceerd gaan worden, met een dikte van 1/1000 van een normale mensenhaar! De totale investering mag een slordige 12 miljard gulden (5 billion Us$) gaan kosten..."

De fabriek zelf kost IBM 6 miljard gulden ($2,5 miljard). In de gigantische fabriek zal dan ook heel wat gemaakt worden:

The facility will combine -- for the first time anywhere -- IBM chip-making breakthroughs such as copper interconnects, silicon-on-insulator and low-k dielectric insulation on 300mm (12-inch) wafers. IBM also expects to be the first chip-maker to mass produce semiconductors at line-widths below 0.10 microns, more than 1000 times thinner than a human hair.

In het televisieprogramma "Radar" is zojuist aangeroepen tot een massale actie tegen UPC. UPC, dat op dit moment zo'n 36% van de kabelmarkt in Nederland bezit is al eerder in opspraak gekomen vanwege het niet nakomen van beloftes en slechte service, maar verbetering is er volgens de klanten nooit geweest. In een samenwerkingsverband tussen "Radar", "Ook Dat Nog", "de Televisieman", de UPC/Chello gebruikersorganisaties en enkele kranten is een brief opgesteld die ontevreden klanten kunnen insturen. UPC heeft in het programma een periode van 2 weken gekregen om hun diensten te verbeteren, gebeurt dit niet is het de bedoeling dat mensen massaal 50% van hun abonementsgeld terug laten storten. Hieronder een stukje uit de brief:

Ik heb u reeds verschillende malen van mijn klachten op de hoogte gesteld zodat u de gelegenheid heeft gekregen mijn klachten te verhelpen. Tot op heden zijn mijn klachten niet naar mijn tevredenheid opgelost, daarom stel ik u in gebreke.

Vanaf 15 oktober wil ik zonder de bovengenoemde gebreken 24 uur per dag toegang hebben tot het internet en bovendien 24 uur per dag met een snelheid van tenminste 128 Kbps (kilobits per seconde) kunnen surfen op en downloaden van het internet. Dit is zijn de diensten waar ik voor betaal, als u dit niet nakomt schort ik per 1 november a.s. mijn betaling op met 50%. Ik doe dit op grond van artikel 6:52 en 262 van het Burgerlijk Wetboek.

Als u bovengenoemde vanaf 15 oktober a.s. niet nakomt, zal ik bovendien op grond van art. 6: 74 e.v. van het Burgerlijk Wetboek een schadevergoeding eisen ter hoogte van tenminste het opgeschorte bedrag.

Microsoft heeft een team samengesteld om Microsoft-software van bedrijven en individuelen, die gedupeerd zijn door look-alike imitaties, te vervangen door de echte software:

In a bold move to tackle piracy, Microsoft says it will even consider replacing all counterfeit CDs handed in within two days of purchase, except for those that are blatantly false, for example, those copied onto cheap writeable discs.

[...]Microsoft says it launched the initiative because pirated software can seriously damage the credibility of a company and even lead to legal disputes. The project will also help Microsoft track down pirates and halt a trade that is estimated to cost it billions of dollars each year in lost revenue.

AMD heeft in een press release laten weten dat zij vandaag op het 2000 Microprocessor Forum in San Jose de eerste publieke demo van een dual Athlon systeem met 760MP chipset hebben gegeven. 3D Studio Max werd gebruikt om de prestaties van de dual Athlon config te demonstreren:

A few other reviewers have been as brave as to say that mini CD-R will be the future of storage in digital cameras. I'd have to place myself on the other side of that fence. Don't get me wrong, there's a place for it and I'm sure the CD1000 will sell well, but there's lots of things holding mini CD-R back, not least the physical size of the CD-R mechanism (and thus the camera), its speed and battery usage. It'll be interesting to see how many more products Sony release using mini CD-R.

From a storage cost point of view it's amazing value if you buy your mini CD-R's from the right places. As a camera the CD1000 performs well, that big zoom will keep even the most avid bird watcher happy and image quality is on par with the best 2 megapixel digital cameras.

Zoals sommigen al weten schrijft DPReview hele uitgebreide reviews en dit is er wederom eentje die de moeite waard is. Met 13 pagina's vol tekst, plaatjes en specificaties is het een overzichtelijk, duidelijk en vooral complete review. Als je DPReview nog niet kent; er staan nog veel meer reviews, dus misschien interessant om eens rond te kijken als plannen hebt om er een aan te schaffen.

Hilbert Hagedoorn van Guru3D.com heeft als eerste een review geschreven over de Hercules 3D Prophet II Ultra, een kaart die met drie woorden te beschrijven is: snel, blauw en duur. De kaart is gebaseerd op de GeForce 2 Ultra core en is in het bezit van 64MB DDR ram lopend op de indrukwekkende snelheid van 460MHz. Jammer genoeg is de prijs even indrukwekkend, minstens 1500 piek voor een videokaart is alles behalve goedkoop, maar voor 60FPS op 1600x1200x32 moet je ook iets overhebben. Als je nog niet tevreden bent met deze snelheid, de core kon prima op 290MHz lopen en het geheugen op 499MHz :

Without a doubt in my mind the Hercules 3D Prophet II Ultra 64MB is the fastest videocard for the consumer market available. Hercules/Guillemot has done a truly excellent job by making a high quality videocard here. The key to the success of this card are of course quality components and a good package with bundled software and TV-Out. The included cooler and the usage of extremely fast DDR memory make this card pretty much unbeatable to date. The price tag for this card is 1600/1700 guilders here in the Netherlands !! That's around $700 for this 64MB version, let me also state that the card is only available in a 64MB version.

What can we say more than this is the best card to own at this given moment. Overclocking will allow you to boost 15-20% more out of the card and with our testing methods you can rest assure that the card will be stable at ~ 290MHz for it's core and 499MHz for it's memory in any given system.

De OPTA gaat erop toezien dat KPN haar tarieven niet te laag maakt om zo de concurrentie ook nog een kans te bieden. Om te testen of de prijzen niet te laag zijn heeft de OPTA een toets ontwikkeld die controleert of er een situatie voorkomt waarin de concurrent meer geld aan de KPN moet betalen dan er binnenkomt. Volgens OPTA doet deze situatie zich momenteel al voor in het locale basistarief van de KPN tijdens het weekeinde:

Gebaseerd op de ontwikkelde toets, doet zich volgens de OPTA de prijsklem nu al voor het lokale (in OPTA-taal binnenbasis)tarief van KPN in het weekeinde.

"Het huidige binnenbasistarief is gebaseerd op de gemiddelde kosten voor lokale gesprekken en regionale gesprekken. Dat drukt de prijs voor een gemiddeld binnenbasisgesprek en maakt het voor andere telecomaanbieders moeilijker concurreren tegen de lage KPN-tarieven", zo stelt de telecomwaakhond in een persbericht.

Als oplossing noemt de OPTA in het persbericht het invoeren van een apart tarief voor gesprekken binnen het eigen netnummergebied en één voor gesprekken naar een aangrenzend nummergebied. Nu vallen die nog onder één, lokaal, tarief.

Op die manier zou voor andere telecomaanbieders ruimte moeten ontstaan om op het regionale tarief (naar aangrenzende netnummergebieden) te concurreren met KPN, terwijl volgens de telecomwaakhond de 'echt' lokale gesprekken goedkoper kunnen worden.

Positief nieuws voor alle ouders die bezorgd zijn over de hoeveelheid seks op internet, schrijft Nu.nl. De Britse televisiezender Channel 5 heeft sinds kort het erotische gedeelte van hun website kindvriendelijk gemaakt. De inhoud hiervan is pas beschikbaar vanaf 9 uur 's avonds lokale tijd, zodat de koters niet zo makkelijk meer naar de vieze plaatjes kunnen kijken. Natuurlijk heeft een dergelijke actie pas echt zin als alle sites dezelfde regeling hebben, maar zover is het nog lang niet. Toch is het wel een stapje in de richting. Vanaf Nederland is de site trouwens pas vanaf 22:00 uur beschikbaar, wegens het tijdsverschil:

Wie op de site van Channel 5 de 'adult'-pagina's bezoekt, krijgt overdag de melding dat dat gedeelte van de site is geopend tussen 21.00 en 05.00 uur. De pagina's hebben volgens de mededeling 'het erotische karakter van bepaalde Channel 5 programma's'.

Dat kinderen in de Verenigde Staten in een hele andere tijdzone leven, en dus wel overdag naar de pagina's kunnen kijken, is volgens een woordvoerder van de zender nauwelijks een probleem.

"Onze eerste verantwoordelijkheid zijn de Engelse kijkers. Bovendien zijn de pagina's erg braaf vergeleken met wat er zoal op internet is te vinden. Mensen die zoeken naar sex zullen onze site nauwelijks interessant vinden."

Via AMD Zone kwam ik op deze page terecht waar een pic en wat info is te vinden over Tyan's S2398 moederbord met de AMD 760 DDR chipset. Het plankje zal 6xPCI, 2x PC1600 / PC2100 DDR SDRAM sloten en onplank audio en LAN meekrijgen:

Bij CNET.com is te lezen dat Chief Sales Executive Mitch Mandich van Apple aan het eind van dit jaar het bedrijf zal verlaten. Deze woorden komen na de winstwaarschuwing van Apple, waardoor het bedrijf een enorme koersval beleefde. Volgens Apple lagen de cijfers vooral aan tegenvallende verkopen in de educatieve sector en de matige verkopen van de nieuwe G4 Cube. Alhoewel het niet zeker is dat het aftreden van Mandich hier mee te maken heeft, is het wel zeer waarschijnlijk. Volgens CEO Steve Jobs wil Mandich "wat meer tijd met zijn familie doorbrengen". Mandich was onderdeel van het team dat Apple weer terug aan de top bracht:

Het volk van de Tech-Gods brengt ons een review van de Quantum Vuurbal LM, een 30GB 7200rpm ATA-66 harddisk met een buffer van 2MB. De performance van dit schijfje bleek aardig goed te zijn en sterk concurrerend met vergelijkbare modellen van Maxtor en Western Digital. Deze andere review bij Gamers Depot gaat daar trouwens in mee, alhoewel de benchmarks daar wel erg overdreven lijken. Hieronder in ieder geval een hap uit de conclusie van de eerste review:

So what do I have to say about this drive? I approve of it. I think you will as well. It's a quick drive and in terms of specs, it's got the goods. In the same field as the Maxtor DiamondMaxPlus 40 line and the Western Digital Caviar7200 line, the Quantum has the same size 2MB buffer and a seek time to match or even better it in some cases. In the real world performances, the drive seems to excel, which is the one place that hardware really should. To boot into Windows, after the SCSI initializing and the FastTrak posting, the drive took a mere 34.4 seconds with this particular setup. The drive is also quieter than the Maxtor DMPlus40, Maxtor DMPlus6800, and the WD Caviar 7200. Aside from that the performance is rock solid and quite impressive. As a result, I would have to give this drive at a 9.0 of 10.

CDRInfo meldt dat ook de Macintosh-bezitters gebruik kunnen gaan maken van Ahead's "burn, baby, burn" Nero. NeroMAX zal deze maand uitkomen, en vanzelfsprekend evenals de PC-versie een enorme hoeveelheid opties hebben. Nog eventjes geduld dus, maar het zit eraan te komen:

NeroMAX will be available from October, and will feature the same ultra stability and advanced CD Recording that has made Nero Burning ROM such a success in the Windows environment. NeroMAX can record most common CD formats including both HFS and ISO data, audio, video, hybrid, mixed mode, and CD Extra. Importantly the discDup, or copy, feature, allows for the backup of other CD’s.

Recording analog data onto CD has proved very popular in PC environments and the DirectCut option within NeroMAX converts such analog sound directly into CD-DA format before recording it to CDR/RW. A comprehensive disc rescue feature is also included which allows you to check a CD-R disc that cannot be loaded properly, or that causes un-unexpected error during recording. Also with CD Mounter, you have a utility for the mounting of discs, including ISO sessions.

As well as supporting the standard Macintosh interfaces, NeroMAX will be fully compatible with both USB and IEEE1394. For too long Macintosh users have been denied a real choice in CD Recording applications. From October 2000 NeroMAX is set to provide that long awaited alternative.

Bij Planet Hardware hebben ze een review klaar van de Kodak DVC325 Digital Videocam. In feite is dit gewoon een USB webcam voor $99 geleverd met software om je eigen foto's en korte filmpies mee te maken. De reviewer was erg te spreken over het apparaatje dat kennelijk over een zeer goede beeldkwaliteit beschikt:

The image quality as you can see is superb, I cannot fault it at all, and especially for the price you pay. So as well as a webcam that lets you broadcast across the world you also get a high quality Video\Picture capturing device. If you want to be able to record a video to your HDD and be able to mail it to a friend you can. If you want to take Digital still pictures of what ever may interest you, you can. In fact there is not much that you can't do with this product and the software that comes with it that many Professional Video editing suites do. I normally use a Sony Digital Handycam for use as a webcam and taking digital stills and I am not ashamed to say that this $99 camera beats my $1200 dollar beast hands down. The camera also performs well enough in low light. It does gather any ambient light that it does find very well. You could even rig this sucker up for security purposes as long as you had the relevant lighting source to aid it.

So in short, the quality is great, the price is not too bad and the package you get with this camera is awesome. I cannot say a bad thing against this camera. This is yet another product that the manufacturer will not be getting back.

Hoewel de meeste bezoekers van deze site al wel precies zullen weten hoe je moet overklokken, zijn er natuurlijk altijd rookies die absoluut geen idee hebben hoe het allemaal werkt. Voor deze groep mensen heeft ZDNet een handige Nederlandstalige guide geschreven. Hierin worden de belangrijkste basisprincipes van de kunst van het overklokken uitgelegd. Zaken als de FSB, multiplier, voltagetweaking en koeling komen aan de orde. Overigens is het verhaal van Femme over overklokken een stuk uitgebreider, maar het kan natuurlijk geen kwaad om iets van meerdere kanten belicht te krijgen. Een stukje quote:

Een processor bepaalt zijn kloksnelheid door de snelheid van het moederbord (FSB) te vermenigvuldigen met een vermenigvuldig factor (multiplier). Een PIII-450 MHz ,bijvoorbeeld, behaalt zijn kloksnelheid door een multiplier van 4,5, die de frequentie van het moederbord, 100 MHz, natuurlijk te vermenigvuldigen met 4,5. De processorsnelheid is dus niet ingebakken.

[...] Voorbeeld: stel je hebt een PIII-450. Je stelt een FSB in van 107 MHz. Je processor zal nu op 107x 4.5 of 481 MHz werken. Dit is de eenvoudigste manier, maar je bent natuurlijk wat beperkt met deze methode. Als je bijvoorbeeld 115 MHz instelt dan is het mogelijk dat je RAMs protesteren en de boel crasht.

[...] De "multiplier" is op geen enkele Intel Celeron of PIII instelbaar. Deze processors zijn "multiplier-locked", Intel heeft de multiplier op de processor ingesteld en deze kan niet meer veranderd worden. Intel heeft deze operatie uitgevoerd om te voorkomen dat leveranciers processors zouden "omtoveren" tot snellere exemplaren. De PII266 tot 350 is niet "gelockt", maar de PII 400 en 450 zijn dat wel. Bij c't wordt op dit moment de Crusoe processor (TM5600), de welbekende en weinig kracht-vretende processor van Transmeta, eens onder de loep genomen. De eerste resultaten zijn vrij positief: de 600MHz TM5600 presteert tussen de Pentium III 400MHz en 600MHz in. Ook de geheugenprestaties zijn erg goed:

De geheugenprestatie is voor een notebook fatsoenlijk, het begint bij MemCopy met rond de 60 MB/s, en stijgt bij een cache-hit in de translation-buffer van de cpu tot 170 MB/s. Bij het schrijven naar het geheugen (via Memset) bereikt de cpu iets meer dan 280 MB/s. Ter vergelijking: een Pentium III met VIA-Apollo-chipset blijft in deze disciplines met 70 respectievelijk 150 MB/s ver achter, een Pentium-III-Coppermine-800 in een Solane i815-moederbord ligt in hetzelfde bereik met 190 en 255 MB/s.

Met een telefonische actie probeert Superweb te voorkomen dat 'oude' abonnees weggaan bij de provider. De Superweb-klanten van de 'oude garde' kunnen nu nog ongelimiteerd internetten voor 35 gulden per maand, maar per 1 november wil het bedrijf deze abonnees overhevelen naar de nieuwe abonnementsvorms waarbij je 35 gulden per maand betaalt om 50 uur on-line te zijn. Inmiddels is de provider een telefonische actie begonnen onder de oude klanten om hun interesse in een overstap te peilen. Overigens hebben deze klanten geen keuze: zij moeten overstappen of hun abonnement opzeggen. 'Oude' abonnees krijgen als lokkertje het nieuwe abonnement één maand gratis aangeboden.

Superweb-woordvoerder Hans de Regt weigert te spreken van een wanhoopsactie van Superweb om koste wat het kost klanten te behouden, en te voorkomen dat zij overstappen naar concurrerende aanbieders als Flatstream. De aanbieding van één maand geen abonnementskosten is volgens hem uitsluitend bedoeld om gebruikers kennis te laten maken met de nieuwe abonnementsvorm.

"We hebben gisteren onze abonnees nagebeld", aldus De Regt. "Onze eerste indruk is positief. Er is veel interesse voor de nieuwe abonnementsvorm. Het resultaat moet begin volgende week bekend zijn." De Regt verwacht dat nagenoeg alle 0800-klanten gebruik zullen maken van de op 1 november startende 1611-inbeldienst.

Scot Hacker van byte.com heeft een column geschreven over het tweaken van BeOS. Hierin komt ondermeer langs; het tweaken van je achtergrond, de kernel, menu's, boot, profile, etc. Verder noemt hij kort nog wat programma's waarvan hij erg blij is dat die voor BeOS beschikbaar komen:

Terwijl de strijd tussen aanhangers van WAP en van i-mode steeds heftiger wordt, heeft een aantal fabrikanten het idee om 'dual mode'-browsers te lanceren:

Deze browsers moeten zowel WAP als i-mode ondersteunen. Dat biedt voordelen voor ontwikkelaars en de consument. Tijdens het 'Mobile Internet 2000 event' vorige week in Parijs kwam de stelling naar voren dat bedrijven die werken met de WAP-technologie gebruik kunnen maken van het op cHtml gebaseerde i-mode. WAP is dan als merk te behouden, terwijl bedrijven tegelijkertijd geavanceerdere mogelijkheden kunnen aanbieden.

Aanhangers van i-mode menen dat Html meer voordelen biedt dan WAP en daardoor beter toepasbaar is voor draadloze Internet-toegang. I-mode maakt bijvoorbeeld gebruik van pakket-overlay, wat inhoudt dat het is geoptimaliseerd voor het 'altijd-aan' verzenden van data. In dit geval betaalt de klant voor de hoeveelheid verstuurde data. WAP daarentegen gebruikt circuit-geschakelde technologie. Daarnaast is cHtml afgeleid van Html, een protocol dat voor de rest van het Web wordt gebruikt. Ontwikkelaars hoeven zich voor gebruik hiervan minder bij te scholen.

I-mode ondersteunt microrekeningen bij transacties. Een gebruiker kan inhoud ophalen en hiervoor betalen via zijn gebruikelijke rekening. Een versie van i-mode die Java ondersteunt is al op komst. I-mode is ook toepasbaar op kleurenschermen en voor animaties. Nadeel is de slechte beveiliging, wat geldtransancties in de weg staat. Lees het volledige artikel op vnunet.nl.

De mensen van Aware Magazine hebben de tijd genomen om een roundup te maken van een aantal koelers die je nieuwe socket A processor niet in meerdere stukjes verdelen. Het drietal dat getest wordt bestaat uit de GlobalWin FOP38, Alpha PAL 6035 en de All-Copper Hedgehog. Alledrie blijken zeer goede resultaten teweeg te brengen en er zijn weinig verschillen tussen de koelers. Nadelen zijn dat de GlobalWin nogal wat lawaai maakt en dat de Hedgehog aan de prijs is. Dus is de uitkomst: er is geen beste, ligt er maar net aan wat je wil (beetje softe conclusie).

I think the Alpha PAL 6035 is perfect for overclockers that are looking to upgrade their systems because they may have the heatsink already. I'm not saying don't buy a new Alpha, it still is an excellent performer for about 30 bucks, especially if you are looking for excellent cooling at a price right in the middle without a huge amount of added noise. I was unable to test the Delta with the Alpha 6035 because of the timeline getting this article to press but from the review we did earlier on the Alpha/Delta solution, it should drop temps down in the range of the standard HedgeHog. Adding a Delta would also make the price about equivalent to the HedgeHog as well, your call!

The Copper HedgeHog fits in for the overclockers with bucks that want the best and the "coolest". If you have to have the most expensive and tricked out heatsink on the market- grab the copper HedgeHog- it won't disappoint, it provides excellent cooling and a great "smack-talking" value.

Now we come to the GlobalWin FOP38. This heatsink performed excellently, cooling our Duron down to the coolest level in this roundup. If you are looking for the best performing air-cooling heatsink on the market right now and you don't care about noise, grab the FOP 38 from GlobalWin it just kicks butt, for a nice price.

Bij RoloTech (heeft niets met het snoepje te maken) heeft men een review geschreven van de AOpen AX3S, een moederbord gebaseerd op de Intel i815E chipset. De AOpen AX3S bezit 1 AGP slot, 5 PCI en 1 CNR en ATA/100 support. Over het algemeen bleek het bord goed te presteren en was het erg stabiel. Overclocken ging wel, maar er zijn betere mobo's voor dit doeleinde te krijgen. Vooral geschikt voor de zakelijke markt of 'simpele' gebruikers, luidt de conclusie dan ook:

We were very impressed with the AX3S from AOpen. Although not a pure overclocker's or gaming motherboard, this i815E solution would prove to be the excellent core of a well-rounded business or multimedia PC. It's integrated hardware (sound/video) would help lower the cost of a PC by a significant margin, and wouldn't really affect overall performance if the computer utilized a fast P!!! or Celeron processor.

The software bundle is pretty good, and would make a great addition to any user's software suite.

Should you decide to use the AOpen AX3S in your P!!! computer, you'll get an excellent, stable, fast and an otherwise all-round capable motherboard - true to the AOpen name.

For a business computer, the AX3S is probably as good as it gets.

GamePC heeft een Duron 800 review gepost. De meest opzienbare verandering is de toevoeging van een optie om de Duron met 128KB L2 te fabriceren in plaats van de 64KB die hij nu heeft. Dit wordt nu nog niet gebruikt door AMD, maar de kans bestaat dat dit bij hogere kloksnelheden wel gaat gebeuren. De verdere performance van de Duron ligt in de buurt van de P3 800, welke wel 2x zo duur is. Ook deze Duron blijft dus de processor voor mensen die met een klein budget toch een supersnelle processor willen :

The Duron 800 chips are being manufactured with a new core stepping, that being Duron Model 3. Model 3 of the Duron has some interesting characteristics, the most interesting being the option to manufacture the Durons with 128k of L2 cache, as opposed to 64k. AMD's Product Marking Identification Guide for the Duron m.3 has a stepping code for Durons with 128k of L2 cache, which would bring the entire cache of the chip up to 256k, right on par with Intel's Coppermine Pentium III processors. While the Duron 800's currently have 64k of L2, this strongly hints that future Duron chips may be equipped with more cache at higher clock speeds.

At this point, we can only publish this information as speculation from reading AMD's documents, no official information has been brought to light about Durons with larger amounts of cache. So take it with a grain of salt.

Het bedijf hoopt door deze wijzigingen meer resultaten te halen en minder productieproblemen te hebben bij de Pentium 4. In het kort is er iemand bijgekomen en iemand weggegaan:

The Boys @ OCworkbench hebben hun Leadtek Geforce2 GTS wat aangepast om nog het laatste beetje extra uit hun kaartje te halen. Dit werd gedaan door de GPU te bezadelen met een koperen VIce III Xtreme Cu Video Cooler. Ook het geheugen werd onder handen genomen door er mooie heatsinkjes op te zetten. Voor deze mod draaide de kaart, die standaard op 200MHz core en 333MHz memory loopt, op 200/400. Door de betere koeling is het nu mogelijk om 220/420 te draaien. Het uiteindelijke resultaat is dat de 3DMark2000 score met 569 punten omhoog ging naar 7589 ten opzichte van de fabrieksinstellingen. Verder zijn er ook nog wat Quake3 scores te vinden.

Then, I added the Vice III Xtreme Cu Video Cooler onto the core. What I did was to add some thermal paste onto the core and spread it around BUT I left the 4 edges clean (around 1mm space) and added 4 drops of superglue on the 4 edges and stuck the Cooler on it. Now, you may be wondering why I did that instead of using the supplied tape. It's because I felt that the thermal paste will provide a better heat dissipation medium than the frag tape. In the end the whole card looks like this:

De mannen van Sharky Extreme hebben wat interessante info los weten te peuteren van 'sources close to Intel'. Het blijkt dat de Pentium 4 niet gedelayed wordt door marketing technische redenen zoals eerder door The Register gesuggereerd werd, maar vanwege de ICH2 chip die een klein probleem bleek te hebben zodra hij werd gekoppeld aan de i850 of i860:

The Pentium 4 (see our preview right here) is now targeted to launch in week 48 of this year. If our math is correct, that should put the launch around the end of November or beginning of December. This is a bit later than we previously expected, but we now know why the product will be delayed.

It turns out that ICH2 has an issue that only manifests with the i850 and i860 MCHs. Certain PCI cards run into a problem with certain commands that pre-fetch data from memory. Sometimes ICH2 will not invalidate pre-fetched data when it should. The issue is due to the interaction between the MCH and ICH2. From what we hear, Intel fully understands the problem, has solved it, and is doing a "low risk stepping" of ICH2 with a minor metal layer fix in order to get rid of the problem. Once again, this problem only occurs when ICH2 is matched to the i850 and i860 MCHs. Current ICH2 will not encounter this problem.

Named B1 prime, the new samples are going into production in week 41 and should be available in week 42. Intel's customers are being told to continue their validation testing using the B1 stepping of ICH2, and that B1 prime will not require any BIOS or motherboard design changes.[break]Sharky Extreme heeft ook nog wat achtergrond informatie over het verdwijnen van de Timna CPU weten te bemachtigen. Intel heeft ingezien dat het product te laat op de markt zou komen, en dat het daarom overbodig is geworden:[/break]Our sources say Intel has said that their manufacturing scale as well as cost reductions in the general PC industry have, among other things, driven down the overall value platform BOM (bill of materials, a.k.a. the part count and cost). The lowering part counts and therefore costs that high-integration was intended to yield have been seen without Timna. This means that, if Intel were to push Timna, they would be pushing an unneeded part at costs similar to the regular parts.

Onze collega's bij Ace's Hardware hebben een overzichtje in elkaar geflanst over de aankomende videokaarten van ATi, 3dfx en nVidia. Hierin wordt op een rijtje gezet wat al eerder bekend was, het nieuwe is dat het nu in een tabelletje staat :

While nVidia excels in executing instead of promising, I can not help but notice that they will finally get some real competition in the high end gamers market. ATI and 3DFx have more experience with multiprocessor configurations. These multiprocessor offer a higher amount of memory bandwidth, while nVidia's single chip solution is limited to the fastest available DDR SDRAM.

It has been reported that nVidia's geforce Ultra has been delayed because 230 MHZ (460 MHz) DDR SDRAM is not available in high quantities. It will be interesting to see how nVidia will solve the memory bandwidth problem. Embedded RAM? Or a solution like Hyper Z? The latter is more likely as we reported here.
