Sony heeft twee nieuwe Vaio notebooks aangekondigd, waaronder een model dat is voorzien van de mobile Duron processor. Sony is hiermee de eerste fabrikant die een Duron notebook op de markt brengt. De Vaio FX210 heeft de beschikking over een 800MHz processor, 128MB SDRAM, een 10GB harddisk en een DVD speler. Het video-gedeelte wordt verzorgd door een ATi Rage Mobility chipset. Gebundeld met Windows Me kost de FX210 ongeveer 1550 dollar.
De door Sony gebruikte mobile Duron processor is overigens gebaseerd op de huidige Spitfire core. In het derde kwartaal verschijnt de energie-zuinige Morgan core. Morgan is de low-end variant van de Mustang core, waarin ook de Palomino processor zijn oorsprong vindt.
Het tweede nieuwe notebook is de Vaio FX290. Sony bedient met dit model de high-end markt en dat wordt ondersteund door stevige specs zoals de aanwezigheid van een 1GHz mobile Pentium III processor, 256MB RAM, 30Gig harddisk, DVD/CD-RW combi drive en een 15" SXGA TFT scherm. Connectivity and Performance Capabilities
The FX290 and FX210 -- as well as the entire FX product line -- are equipped with integrated 10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet ports and V.90 56K modem for quick network connectivity to home, office and abroad. And to facilitate rapid digital video, audio and data transfer among Sony Digital Handycam® camcorders, Sony Cyber-shot® digital still cameras and other compatible devices, all VAIO notebooks come equipped with Sony's i.LINK® (IEEE 1394)(4) digital interface.
Both the PCG-FX290 and the PCG-FX210 come standard with NTSC video out. VAIO FX series products can easily connect to a wide variety of media devices, bringing multimedia presentations and entertainment experiences to a new level. The PCG-FX290, which comes with a Windows® Millennium Edition operating system, will have an estimated selling price of about $3,400. Its Windows 2000 counterpart, the PCG-FX290K, will sell for around $3,500.(5) The PCG-FX210 comes with the Windows Millennium Edition operating system and sells for about $1,550.(4) All models ship this month.
