CPU:
So, if you have been dedicated to Intel processors and would like to continue being a true Intel fan then, you should get ready for a Pentium 4, which working frequency is expected to rise up to 1.7GHz in Q1 2001 and up to 2GHz in Q2 2001. As for other frequency increase, it is scheduled for Q3-Q4 2001, when a 0.13 micron Northwood core appears. The new core will feature 512KB integrated L2 cache, which is twice as large as that of Willamette (256KB).
[...] Besides Duron and Athlon CPUs supporting dual-processor configurations, AMD is planning to introduce a special server Athlon Ultra 1.4GHz in November. It will be base on the same Mustang core and will support from 512KB up to 4MB L2 cache depending on the customers demand. And these CPUs will work not only in dual- but also in multi-processor configurations.
Mainboards:
As far as the performance of the three already announced DDR Athlon chipsets is concerned, AMD 760 seems to be the fastest of all. Then come VIA KT266 and then ALi MAGiK 1, which will be another bit slower. However, the performance difference between the systems built on these chipsets will hardly exceed 5%, which is incomparable with a 20% performance gain provided by the use of DDR SDRAM.
