GREENSKiN tipte ons richting dit nieuwsartikel van BeNews, die melding maakt dat de komende release van BeOS, codenaam 'Maui', voor niet-commercieel gebruik gratis zal worden aangeboden op free.be.com. De gratis download zal minder uitgebreid zijn dan de volledige BeOS R5:
It is now official. The next release of BeOS, codenamed Maui, will be R5. The BIG (normally we do not want to write in caps, but this is BIG) news is that R5 will be free for personal and non-commercial use from free.be.com. Update 1: We have received an e-mail about the speed issues involving this downloadable version.
The free version of BeOS R5 won't be as complete as the so-called expanded edition. This expanded edition will be for sale. It will include additional software components and utilities not available in the free version. Although Be hasn't yet said anything about where the expanded version will be sold, it will probably be through Be's already established retail channels.
According to Be the free version will be between 40 and 60MB in size and will be downloadable from free.be.com before Q1 is over (so definately before 31 March). It will install as a file onto a normal Windows partition and will also run from within Windows, without any need for repartitioning.
