MarketWacht meldt dat de voormalige gameconsole-fabrikant Sega in gesprek is met Microsoft voor het ontwikkelen van games voor de Xbox. Sega, dat zich na het mislukken van de Dreamcast volledig terug heeft getrokken uit de consolemarkt, wil nu multiplayer-games gaan ontwikkelen. Microsoft wil zich met de Xbox vooral richten internettoepassingen; daarom is Sega aangetrokken om de breedband mogelijkheden van de Xbox te kunnen benutten. De lancering van de nieuwe console in de VS staat nu gepland op 8 november. Verwacht wordt dat de internetfunctionaliteit eind 2002 beschikbaar is.

Sega is already in the process of developing some game software for Microsoft's Xbox, which was supposed to be released in Japan by the Christmas shopping season. Earlier this week, Microsoft said it was delaying the launch until February 22 to focus on the U.S. market. Microsoft is pinning its hopes on the Internet capabilities of its Xbox game machine and has been looking for partners to develop Internet games for the console. Microsoft spokesman Kazuyuki Takada confirmed the talks, saying the company wants Sega to develop online games which can make full use of the Xbox's broadband capability.

[...] In January, Sega announced it was refocusing its business away from developing game machines to supplying software and Internet games for its former rivals.

[...] The award-winning online game, which claims over 3 million subscribers today, has a built-in automatic translation system for 5 different languages -- Japanese, English, French, German, and Spanish -- to enable users to communicate worldwide via chat.

Verschillende mensen maakten ons er op attent dat IBM hard aan de weg timmert met haar Linux activiteiten. Hier valt bijvoorbeeld te lezen dat het bedrijf een aantal servers uitgebracht heeft speciaal voor de telecom-markt, deze worden geleverd met RedHat Linux voorgeïnstalleerd. IBM is deze systemen grootscheeps aan het inzetten: zo worden financiële transacties op de New York Stock Exchange nu afgehandeld door een IBM eServer met Linux. Ook de US-open (dat nu gehouden wordt) draait gedeeltelijk op Linux.

Verder kunnen universitaire studenten meedoen met de 'Linux Scholar Challenge', met als doel om bekend te raken met Open Source, Linux en IBM. De winnaars krijgen een eServer als prijs.

Voor financiële transacties is absolute zekerheid nodig dat alles correct werkt, maar IBM heeft veel vertrouwen in de veiligheid van de servers en Linux:

"Linux security is critical to customers, particularly in the financial sector. It is no coincidence that as Linux matures and becomes more secure, the financial sector is beginning to adopt the platform for critical transactions and IT infrastructure," said Steve Solazzo, vice president, Linux, IBM. Luke Roberts fietste langs The Inquirer en zag daar een bericht staan waarin staat dat de 735 chipset van SiS al ondersteuning heeft voor PC2700 geheugen en Athlon processors met een FSB van 333MHz. SiS lijkt op het moment erg veel succes te scoren met haar single-chip Socket A oplossing. Nadat hij erg snel en betrouwbaar werd bevonden in reviews stonden OEM klanten en enkele grote namen in de wereld van de moederborden klaar om grote hoeveelheden in te slaan. Zodra AMD de eerste processors met 333MHz FSB op de markt zet zal SiS volgens de geruchten meteen klaar staan met haar ondersteuning. Voor de fabrikanten met een SiS 735 bord in hun assortiment zal het vervolgens een eitje zijn om een PC2700 versie ervan uit te brengen, immers hoeft er aan het ontwerp van de printplaat praktisch niets veranderd te worden. SiS zou hiermee de eerste Socket A chipset in handen hebben met deze feature:

The SiS chipset will support such a processor but for some reason little SiS doesn't want to talk about this too much because of its unannounced nature and features. Even though we've just announced it for SiS and AMD.

Computable schrijft dat Toshiba en Infineon in gesprek zijn over een mogelijke fusie van de chipdivisies van beide bedrijven. Door de slechte marktomstandigheden dit jaar zijn de bedrijven op zoek naar wat hulp. Beide bedrijven verwachten dit jaar tegenvallende financiële cijfers. Of de fusie doorgaat is nog niet bekend, Toshiba schijnt ook interesse te hebben in Samsung:

Beide bedrijven zijn door de scherpe terugval in de vraag naar halfgeleiders in combinatie met de sterke prijsdaling van chips, gedwongen op zoek te gaan naar partners. Bovendien kampen beide bedrijven door de sterk verslechterde marktomstandigheden met zeer tegenvallende financiële resultaten. Zo verwacht Toshiba dit jaar een verlies te zullen gaan lijden van 1,05 miljard euro, tegen een eerder verwachte winst van 550 miljoen euro. Daarnaast rekent de Japanse chipgigant op een fors lagere omzet: van 59 miljard euro naar 52 miljard euro.[break]Verder komt ZDNet met nog meer kommer en kwel uit de chipwereld. Naast het bericht dat er tienduizenden mensen worden ontslagen bij Toshiba en Hitachi weten ze ook te vertellen dat Motorola overweegt om haar chipafdeling te verkopen:[/break] Motorola overweegt zijn chipafdeling te verkopen als het binnenkort niet beter presteert. Zowel AMD als IBM zou interesse hebben. Met IBM zouden al 'verkennende' gesprekken zijn gevoerd. Daarmee zou Big Blue de enige fabrikant van PowerPC-chips worden.

De chipafdeling van Motorola verkeert al een tijdje in de problemen; het tweede kwartaal liet een operationeel verlies zien van 381 miljoen dollar (421,3 miljoen euro). Toch heeft de afdeling een aanzienlijk aandeel in Motorola's verkoopcijfers: vorig jaar was de verkoop van chips goed voor 5,48 miljard van de totale verkoop van 21,11 miljard dollar. Als een reactie op de slechte resultaten sloot Motorola een aantal chipfaciliteiten, onder meer in de VS, en verdwenen er banen.

silentsnow tipte ons over een zeer geheimzinnige samenwerking tussen Intel en 's werelds grootste geheugenproducenten om een gezamelijke opvolger van RDRAM en DDR geheugen te ontwerpen. Op EE Times valt te lezen dat deze Advanced DRAM Technology Group eind dit jaar haar nieuw geheugen wil presenteren aan de JEDEC om het tot standaard te laten bombarderen. Hoewel er weinig bekend is over de ADT specificatie zou deze gekenmerkt worden door een laag voltage en een brede bus. De technologie zou al twee jaar in ontwikkeling zijn, maar pas vorige maand begon de groep alvast met het verstrekken van kleine beetjes informatie aan grote bedrijven. Over twee tot drie jaar moet hij zijn weg vinden naar PC's. De techniek lijkt erg veel op DDR-II en daarom hoopt men dat de JEDEC DDR-II verwerpt voor ADT of de standaarden op één of andere manier samenvoegt. Fred Leung van ALi, één van de deelnemers aan het project, laat weten dat niemand zit te wachten op nog een strijd tussen twee soorten geheugen:

"I definitely don't want two memory standards," said Fred Leung, associate vice president of sales and marketing for chip set vendor Acer Laboratories Inc. (San Jose, Calif.), one of three chip set vendors advising the ADT group. "Otherwise the north bridge [memory controller] will get too complex, or I would have to offer multiple versions of the chip."

While Jedec has yet to hear ADT's proposal, in practice the lines between the two groups are blurred since leading DRAM makers participate in both. Elpida, Hynix, Infineon, Micron and Samsung worked with Intel in the ADT group.

But unlike Jedec, the ADT group has restricted the number of its participants and kept quiet about its work. This was done to streamline the standards-making process and avoid patent conflicts, Tabrizi said.

Omdat het geheugen deels is gebaseerd op DDR en men rechtszaken van Rambus Inc. vreesde heeft men de ontwikkelingen tot nu toe topgeheim gehouden. Hoe het inmiddels berucht geworden Rambus van plan is te reageren op het nieuwe ADT-DRAM is nog niet bekend.

Tweakers die hoopten op een 24x SCSI-brander van Plextor worden teleurgesteld. CDR-Info meldt namelijk dat het bedrijf géén nieuwe branders meer zal uitbrengen met een SCSI-interface. Deze beslissing is genomen naar aanleiding van de afgenomen vraag naar de duurdere SCSI-branders als gevolg van de introductie van Burn-proof op hun IDE-broertjes. Ook zullen er geen nieuwe SCSI CD-ROM spelers meer uitkomen. Plextor zal nog wel support blijven leveren voor de producten die op dit moment nog te koop zijn:

"...Our PleXWriter 12/10/32S is the last model that we have developed with a SCSI interface. We have no plans to develop faster SCSI burners. Due to BURN-Proof technology, the demand for SCSI burners decreased a lot. Regarding our 40-speed CD-Rom drive. Also this product will be the last SCSI CD-Rom drive from Plextor. Of course this does not mean that we do not support these products anymore. As long has there will be drives in the market, we will help the customer in the best possible way..."[break]Verder heeft CDR-Info ook nog info over de Plextor ML (Multilevel) en DVD-R recorders:[/break]As the company states "...We are preparing for next wave of multimedia information devices with the development of new products, using DVD technology...". The upcoming Plextor DVD-R recorder will support for sure DVD-R (maybe DVD-RW also?) and of course CD(-R/RW) format(s). When you should expect it? We would say add at least 8-10 months. C|Net heeft een interessant artikel over de Intel McKinley online gezet. Deze opvolger van de huidige Itanium zal op 0,18 micron worden geproduceerd en moet 1,5 tot 2 keer zo snel zijn als de huidige Merced core. Dit wordt onder andere bereikt door een kortere pipeline, 3MB fullspeed on-die L3 cache in plaats van 2 of 4MB off-die, twee extra integer units en twee extra instruction cores. In zijn totaal is de tweede IA-64 processor met ruim 220 miljoen transistors ongeveer vijf keer zo groot als de huidige Pentium 4. Toch verwacht men dat hij bij zijn doop eind dit jaar al rond de 1GHz zal draaien, terwijl Merced op het moment niet boven de 800MHz uit komt. Daarnaast krijgt het beestje een nieuwe bus; waar de huidige Itanium het nog moet doen met een 64 bit 133MHz DDR interface, zal McKinley een 128 bit 100MHz quadpumped snelweg tot zijn beschikking hebben, die geschikt is om meer dan 1000 processors op te huisvesten. Ook over de 0,13 micron Madison en Deerfield chips is al wat schaarse informatie bekend:

In 2003, Madison will raise the cache quotient. Versions of Madison for eight- and 16-processor servers will come with 6MB caches, while versions for smaller servers and workstations will come with caches ranging from 3MB to 6MB.

A yet later successor to Itanium, known as Deerfield, which also comes out in 2003, will be aimed at the "dense server" market. Dense servers typically measure 3.5 inches in height or less. Deerfield will be built around the same basic architecture as Madison and McKinley, but it will consume far less power and produce less heat, according to Talwalker. The chip will appear mostly in two-processor servers.

Microsoft heeft overigens gisteren om Intel een beetje te helpen een "Limited Edition" van Windows Advanced Server uitgebracht, in feite niets meer of minder dan een betaversie van Windows.NET server 64 bit edition. Zodra eind dit jaar de final klaar is wordt deze natuurlijk wel vervangen. Bedankt liekens! Hier kun je trouwens nog meer technische info lezen over de chip.

Op het Intel Developer Forum dat op dit moment plaatsvindt worden natuurlijk niet alleen nieuwe processors getoond, zo is er bijvoorbeeld een hoop informatie te vinden over toekomstige I/O standaarden zoals Serial ATA, 3GIO/Arapahoe en AGP8x. De roadmap die is getoond voor de verschillende busstandaarden laat zien dat we onze PCI kaarten de komende jaren nog niet hoeven te vervangen. Pas in de loop van 2004 zal PCI vervangen worden door 3GIO 1x en 2x. Inderdaad, net als bij AGP het geval is maakt de nieuwe standaard gebruik van een soort "multiplier" in de naam om de versie/bandbreedte aan te duiden. Zo zullen er rond de helft van 2005 bijvoorbeeld 3GIO 8x en 16x worden geïntroduceerd voor zware servers. Ondanks deze snelle groei van capaciteit van 3GIO zal PCI nog lang niet helemaal verdwijnen, in de vorm van PCI-X en PCI-X 2.0 zal deze standaard nog minstens tot 2008 actief blijven. Hieronder een voorbeeldje van een 3GIO chipset:

Interestingly, the 3GIO and AMD HyperTransport coexits together for interconnecting the Northbridge and the Southbridge. 3GIO serves more functions like connecting to the graphics and the expansion devices. Arapahoe working group is working to shift the common Accelerated Graphics Port to the 3GIO or "Arapahoe" serial bus. The next-generation AGP 8X or AGP 3.0 standard will be the last for AGP then 3GIO will take over. AGP 3.0 is defined as a 32-bit wide parallel bus clocked at 533-MHz, for a total bandwidth of about 2.1 Gbytes per second. 3GIO will be a serial point-to-point interconnect, capable of scaling from 1- to 32-bits wide. The total bandwidth per pin is initially targeted at 2.5 Gbits/s per pin which could then be clocked higher in future updates.

[break]Verder heeft Seagate officiëel de Serial ATA interface aangekondigd. De eerste prototypes van hotpluggable ATA-600 schijven werden getoond, met daarbij de meldig dat de hele Barracuda ATA serie al is voorbereid op de nieuwe standaard. Het wachten is op de chipsetmakers, die de eerst nog ATA-150 controllers op de markt moeten gaan zetten. Serial ATA zou goedkoper moeten zijn dan de huidige parallele interface en is in tegenstelling tot de meeste andere getoonde innovaties volledig backwards compatible met zijn voorgangers:[/break]Built for the future from the ground up, Serial ATA is the first completely new PC storage interface technology since Parallel ATA technology was introduced 20 years ago. The timing of Serial ATA implementation is ideal. Initial Serial ATA transfer rates above 150 Mbytes per second will be implemented by all major chipset makers well before hard drive transfer rates exceed the capability of the current Ultra ATA/100 interface. In the future, an enhanced breed of Serial ATA for entry server markets will be introduced to enable superset features previously unique to SCSI devices.

Skiewiel attendeerde ons erop dat LinuxWorld Expo 2001 gestart is in San Fransisco. Ook dit jaar doen er weer veel grote bedrijven mee (IBM, Hewlett Packard, AMD, Sun Microsystems, Borland, SGI, Oracle, Compaq, Dell) en nog vele tientallen kleinere. Naast de Expo wordt ook de jaarlijkse 'Linus Torvalds Community Award' ($25,000) uitgereikt. Verder worden er lezingen gegeven die onder andere over de toekomst van Linux gaan. In een nieuwsbericht van Computer News Daily wordt ingegaan op welke punten de groei van Linux verwacht kan worden:

Still, few large businesses are using Linux to run bread-and-butter business applications such as accounting, order entry and inventory management - areas where Unix still dominates and Windows is gaining ground.

Instead, corporations are adopting Linux mostly for the same kinds of chores that earlier won over ISPs: nearly 56 percent of all Linux systems are used for Internet infrastructure functions, while an additional 16.7 percent run collaborative applications such as e-mail and group scheduling programs.

Now that it has gained a foothold in the corporate world, though, Linux seems to be expanding its scope. ``It's moving up the server food chain,'' said Eastwood. ``It's even beginning to attack the low end of the Unix market.''

And that attack will become more serious next year, he predicted, when McKinley, the code name for a new version of Intel's 64-bit Itanium processor, is expected to provide a higher-performance hardware platform for Linux. (Though versions of the OS are available for a variety of processors, it's currently used mainly on low-end servers with 32-bit Intel chips - the same kind used in everyday PCs.)

Voor diegenen die geen zin meer hebben in het trekken van netwerkkabels, is op Tom's Hardware Guide onlangs een artikel verschenen over draadloze netwerken. In dit artikel wordt onder andere dieper ingegaan op de gebruikte netwerktopologie en protocollen. Ook het veiligheidsaspect en de gebruikte beveiligingsmethoden worden besproken, niet geheel onbelangrijk in verband met recente berichten over gaten in de beveiliging. Als laatste is er een draadloos netwerk bij Tom op de testbank gegaan. Hierbij zijn onder andere zaken als overdrachtssnelheid en packetloss gemeten en vergeleken met een 'draadjes' netwerk. Ondanks het feit dat de draadloze netwerken duidelijk achterblijven bij hun bekabelde broertjes, ziet de schrijver toch een duidelijke markt voor draadloze netwerken:

For the SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) this product is very attractive. With this product there is no need to run wires under carpets or through walls. The SOHO user need not worry about plugging their laptop into docking stations every time they come into the office or fumble for clumsy and unattractive network cabling. Wireless networking provides connectivity without the hassle and cost of wiring and expensive docking stations. Also, as the business or home office grows or shrinks, the need for wiring new computers to the network is nonexistent. If the business moves, the network is ready for use as soon as the computers are moved. For the wired impossible networks such as those that might be found in warehouses, wireless will always be the only attractive alternative. As wireless speeds increase, these users have only brighter days in their future.

AnandTech heeft een review online gezet van de Altec Lansing Ada 890. Dit speakersetje kan zowel in 2.1 als in 4.1 opstelling gebruikt worden. In Quad modus heeft het helaas last van een vervelende bug die ervoor zorgt dat vrijwel geen bas te horen valt. Dit maakt de speakers wat minder geschikt voor de gamers onder ons:

One major drawback to the system is the malfunctioning Quad mode. For gamers, this would be the primary listening mode; it allows for four channel soundcards to create an audio environment to accompany a gaming experience. However, the phase cancellation in the system renders this input unusable.

Besides the problems with quad mode, the system is fairly responsive sonically. Its treble and bass adjustment points are well suited to fit the system, and allow for the sound to be tweaked as needed. Overall, the analog inputs are warmer than the digital ones, though they add presence to the low midrange in the sound. The digital input is very clean and consistent, though the headroom seems a little low.

The system sets up incredibly easily. Everything is color coded, and the full page, full color diagrams present multiple configuration options. For listeners that don't have a front mounted headphone jack, there is one provided on the front left pedestal.

Opa Tom vertelt in een artikel over de korte termijn plannen van Intel en AMD dat de processor fabrikant uit Austin van plan is om het aloude idee van de PR-ratings nieuw leven in te blazen. De Performance Ratings werden enkele jaren geleden door AMD, Centaur en Cyrix gebruikt om het performance niveau van hun processors aan te geven. De Cyrix 6x86 en AMD K5 waren destijds op gelijke kloksnelheid sneller dan de Intel Pentium. Althans, voor zover de FPU prestaties buiten beschouwing werden gelaten. Een 120MHz Cyrix 6x86 presteerde bijvoorbeeld gelijk aan de Pentium 150. Met de tijd begonnen de PR-ratings manker te worden, toen AMD en Cyrix steeds verder achterop raakten in de kloksnelheidsrace met Intel. Heden ten dage kunnen de PR-ratings nog steeds rekenen op grote wansmaak bij computer gebruikers.

Volgens Tom's Hardware Guide wil AMD het PR idee herintroduceren bij de release van de desktop Palomino, die overigens geen Athlon 4 zal heten maar mogelijk wel 'AthlonXP'. Deze processors zullen vergezeld gaan van een 'Model' nummer, dat refereert aan de prestaties op P4-niveau. Zo zal een 1,4GHz Palomino door het leven gaan als AthlonXP (?) Model 1600. Het is de bedoeling dat de OEMs alleen het Model-nummer naar de consument communiceren en de werkelijke kloksnelheid afgeschermd houden. Hetzelfde geldt voor de mobofabrikanten. AMD is having very rigorous plans. It starts with the printing on the chip. Future Athlons will be specified by 'MODEL' numbers . For instance a Palomino-Athlon that runs at 1.4 GHz will be MODEL 1600, because AMD considers Palomino 1.4 GHz to be at least as fast as a Pentium 4 1.6 GHz. The printing on the chip will be 'A1600 .....', even though its a 1400 MHz part only. The same is valid for motherboards and their POST. A new BIOS Writer's Guide prohibits the BIOS from ever displaying the true core frequency of Palomino! It has to display the MODEL number instead. Unfortunately, H. Oda's WCPUID still reports the actual clock frequency and even WindowsXP is still reporting the clock rather than the MODEL number. It is unlikely that AMD can force Microsoft into changing WindowsXP code, now that it has just gone Gold.

They are afraid that customers who bought a MODEL 1600 could sue the PC-maker once they discovered that the processor inside is only running at 1400 MHz. It might not come to that, but the introduction of MODEL-numbers instead of real clock frequency will create a lot of confusion.

De al eerder hier besproken SMT (Simultaneous Multi Threading) technologie van Intel, tot nu de codenaam 'Jackson' dragend, heeft van haar marketing mensen een officiële naam gekregen: Hyper-Threading Technology, zo valt te lezen op ZDNet. Intel demonstreerde deze technologie gisteren op het IDF - dat deze week gehouden wordt in San Jose te Californië - en kondigde aan dit te zullen invoeren op server en workstation processors (Xeon) in 2002 en later ook op desktop CPU's (Pentium 4). Hyper-Threading maakt het mogelijk dat de CPU efficiënter kan werken. Voorwaarde is dat het gebruikte OS en de applicaties kunnen multi-threaden. De chip kan, middels SMT, instructies afkomstig van applicaties verdelen over de verschillende integer en floating-point units, al naar gelang hoe dat het beste uitkomt. De grap is dat deze funktionaliteit allang op Pentium 4 en Xeon processors aanwezig is en wordt meegebakken. Op de huidige cores zijn de betreffende circuits alleen nog niet ingeschakeld. Dit 'inschakelen' zal zeer waarschijnlijk alleen ondie kunnen gebeuren, dus een paar pinnetjes met elkaar verbinden zal vermoedelijk weinig soelaas bieden .

Men demonstreerde het verschil in performance met twee workstations. De ene uitgerust met een normale Xeon processor, de andere met een Hyper-Threaded Xeon chip. Een test met Alias|Wavefront 4.0 - een 3D animatiepakket - liet een winst zien van 30%. Servers zouden dus bijvoorbeeld 30% meer users kunnen bedienen dan voorheen. Intel is daarom druk doende om meer software-fabrikanten zover te krijgen, dat zij hun applicaties en drivers multi-threaded maken. Maar dat kost veel tijd. Paul Otellini riep developers op, om van de in principe voor het grijpen liggende performance boost, gebruik te maken. The open question is whether software developers will latch onto the idea. Software applications will need to be rewritten to take advantage of hyperthreading, and getting developers to tweak their products can take an enormous amount of time.

[...] Ideally, hyperthreading, which has been under development for four and a half years, will show meatier benefits. An individual could play games while simultaneously downloading multimedia files from the Internet with a computer containing the technology, Poulin predicted.

Hyperthreaded chips would also be cheaper than dual-processor computers. "You only need one heat sink, one fan, one cooling solution," he said, along with, of course, one chip.

Chips running hyperthreading have been produced, and both Microsoft's Windows XP and Linux can take advantage of the technology, according to Poulin.

Computers containing a single hyperthreaded chip differ from dual-processor computers in that two applications can't take advantage of the same processor substructure at the same time.

"Only one gets to use the floating point at a single time," Poulin said

Op het Intel Developer Forum demonstreerde gisteren Intel's General Manager Paul Otellini, aan een publiek van 4000 engineers, developers, designers en andere belangstellenden - waaronder AnandTech - een 0,13 micron Pentium 4 Northwood, op een kloksnelheid van 3,5GHz. Anand bestempelde de yield van deze CPU als vrij hoog. Otellini wees er nog eens op, dat de Pentium 4 architectuur naar verwachting uiteindelijk tot 10GHz zou doorschalen. Er werd vervolgens op 3,0GHz een intensieve demo gedraaid met 100% CPU belasting, waarbij Quake III Arena speelde en er simultaan meerdere digitale video feeds verwerkt en verzonden werden over een netwerk. Daarna werd een 2,2GHz Northwood gebruikt, die later dit jaar uitkomt met 512KB L2 cache, om een paar nieuwe Windows XP features te tonen. Later die dag zou er nog een luchtgekoelde 4GHz double pumped ALU (8GHz effektief) gedemonstreerd gaan worden, bestemd voor een toekomstige processor, aldus Anand:

Later today Intel will be showing off an air-cooled 4GHz double pumped ALU (effectively 8GHz) from a future Intel processor. The interesting thing about this demo is that it will be a 32-bit ALU that's being shown off…

[...] With a 512KB L2 cache, AMD will find it very difficult to compete with very high clock speeds with their current line of Athlon processors. Luckily for AMD, the Pentium 4 will only hit 2.2GHz this year with the Northwood core.

Now that the Pentium 4 is finally shedding its low introductory clock speeds, the Athlon vs. Pentium 4 debate is going to get a lot more interesting over the next few months.

With Northwood, Intel will also be introducing mobile Pentium 4 devices in the next year. Although AMD's Athlon 4 has brought AMD a high-performance mobile solution, they have yet to compete with Intel in the mobility facet of notebook computing. A repackaged, cooler running 0.13-micron Athlon 4 will be necessary for AMD to be taken seriously in the mobile market. It's coming, but it's not here yet.
