Bij HardwareZone is een review online gegooid van de LiteOn LTR-24102B CD-R/RW drive. De LTR-24102B biedt snelheden van 24X/10X/40X en heeft een toegangstijd van 120ms. De drive beschikt slechts over 2MB cache, maar de productie van onderzettertjes wordt gelukkig ook voorkomen door Smart Monitoring & Adapting Recording Technology (SMART), een soort burn-proof technologie. Audio-CD's rippen gebeurde in de test met zo'n 14X; geen schokkende prestaties dus, maar het is dan ook vooral de prijs die de LTR-24102B aantrekkelijk maakt:

Though not as popular as more reknowned brands like Ricoh and Plextor, LiteOn is fast gaining ground as the preferred choice among users who are looking for an affordable performance-to-cost drive.

Storage Review heeft de 24 speed Plextor PlexWriter eens op de pijnbank gelegd. Deze IDE-brander fikt op 24x Zone-CLV, wat inhoud dat de eerste gedeeltes van een disc op 16x en 20x worden volgeschreven, voordat de 24x topsnelheid wordt gehaald. Deze snelheden kunnen worden beschermd met behulp van het bekende burn-proof, 4MB buffer, en Plextor Optimized Writing Error Reduction Control. Ook de leesprestaties worden in de review uitvoerig getest, en werden afgezien van de ietwat minder goede DAE-kwaliteit zeer goed bevonden. Wat eventueel in de weg kan staan is de relatief hoge aanschafprijs, maar daar staan wel de Plextor-kwaliteit en service tegenover. Check hieronder wat meer uit de conclusie:

Overall, the PX-W2410TA sets new standards for a CD-RW in write performance. While audiophiles and hardware enthusiasts may look down upon the minor DAE issues we uncovered, the drive's extraction quality is still excellent with all but the most beat up discs. Even when quality is measurably lower, the drive's excellent error correction easily masks any playback anomalies.

What may influence buying decisions more is the drive's relatively high price tag. While it's true that the retail package offers more than most other competitors' offerings, budget-minded users as well as those in search of a "quick and basic" burner might be more tempted by low-priced alternatives from Ricoh, Lite-On or Yamaha. However, for those looking for high quality and are willing to pay for it, the Plextor will not disappoint.

AMD zal in oktober nieuwe processoren uitbrengen, als antwoord op de onlangs geïntroduceerde 2GHz Pentium 4 door Intel. Deze zal in de eerste week van oktober concurrentie krijgen van Athlon MP's @ 1,33GHz, 1,4GHz en 1,53GHz. Daarnaast zullen er volgens The Inquirer in die week ook nieuwe Durons uitkomen, draaiend op 1GHz en 1,1GHz, evenals 1,4 en 1,53GHz Athlon Palomino's. Eerder stonden deze gepland voor een introductie tegen het einde van september.

Sources close to AMD's plans in Asia have now given us some hard facts about how it will respond to Intel's introduction of its 2GHz Pentium 4 microprocessor.

AMD is now expected to release 1.33GHz, 1.4GHz and 1.53GHz Athlon MPs in the first week of October and that week is also likely to be the time for other product launches.

The first week of October will also bring the launch of the 1GHz and 1.1GHz Duron desktop chips, our sources tell us, while the 1.4GHz Palomino and the 1.53GHz Palomino desktops are also expected to be released that week. Gisteren las je al over de aankondiging van nVidia's Personal Cinema-systeem, vandaag kun je bij GamePC alvast eerste indrukken van dit product vinden. De set bestaat uit een GeForce2 MX (of hoger) videokaart, een break-out box en uiteraard een datakabel om het zaakje aan te sluiten. Het gelige kastje heeft alle audio- en videoaansluitingen aan boord en bevat ook een geïntegreerde TV-tuner. Hiermee is het o.a. mogelijk om 16-kanalen tegelijk op je scherm weer te geven, alhoewel de werking ervan nog wat tweaking nodig had. Toch de lijken de prestaties en de mogelijkheden van de Personal Cinema-set erg veelbelovend, en de $50 meerprijs is ook niet al te duur:

Nvidia also had a demonstration where they tossed in a DVD of Crouching Tiger : Hidden Dragon on the Personal Cinema. This particular model was based of a GeForce2 MX 400, which was doing the DVD decoding. From what I saw, it looked and sounded fantastic, with both video and audio being passed through the Personal Cinema box.

The Personal Cinema can also do basic video editing as well, but I wasn't able to see it in action. Most likely the software is still going through final revisions before getting shipped out. If Nvidia can nail down some very simple editing functions with an easy to figure out interface, they'll have a very popular product on their hands.

Only a few manufacturers are starting off making Personal Cinema retail boxes, although more are soon to follow. The launching companies are Compro and Visiontek in the U.S, and Creative Labs over in Europe. Personal Cinema cards will cost about fifty bucks more than their OEM-equivalent cards, which we don't think is too terrible. You can expect to see Personal Cinema retail boxes hit store shelves sometime within the next month.

Nikolai Dorofeev van Digit-Life komt met een korte IDE Harddisk roundup. In de roundup komen de nieuwe modellen van Seagate, Maxtor en Samsung op de testbank te liggen. In de Ziff-Davis WinBench 99 worden de resultaten ook vergeleken met modellen die al eerder getest zijn (ook van andere fabrikanten als IBM en Fujitsu). De Seagte Barracuda ATA IV, een 40 GB per platter schijf @ 7200 RPM met 2 MB geheugen, is volgens de reviewer de duidelijke winnaar. Hieronder de conclusie:

The Seagate Barracuda ATA IV, as you may assume, is a new leader among the discs with 7200 rpm spindle speed. The Maxtor 2B020H1 is the best choice for entry-level computers (high speed + moderate capacity + low price ($83 at Almer)). The Samsung discs made an ambivalent impression. In the Intel IOMeter test they are unquestioned winners. But this is a synthetic test. In the tests based on real applications the discs are losers. The company should, probably, take the firmware development more seriously.

Accelenation levert ons de eerste review van de Tyan Tiger MP. Dit AMD 760MP-moederbord is een low-cost opvolger van de Thunder K7 en is met een prijs van $220 erg geschikt voor gebruik in betaalbare workstations. De omvang van de Tyan MP valt nog binnen de ATX specificatie en biedt plaats aan een 1/6 AGP/PCI layout, waarvan 4 PCI-sloten 64-bits zijn. Verder bevat de plank 4 DIMM-sloten voor een maximaal aan 3GB DDR SDRAM. Een bijkomend voordeel van dit low-cost Athlon SMP bord is overigens dat een 300W voeding afdoende is, en je dus niet per sé hoeft te investeren in een 460W exemplaar.

De benchmarks van de Tyan MP werden vergeleken met die van de Thunder K7, alsmede een Dual Xeon 1,7GHz, P4 1,7GHz en een Dual P3 1GHz. Het bleek dat de veel duurdere (maar tevens uitgebreidere) Thunder K7 zijn meerdere aan de Tiger MP moet bekennen. Laatstgenoemde presteert meestal ietsie beter, hoogstwaarschlijk door de wat beter ontwikkelende BIOS. Helaas zijn overklok-opties er niet echt in aanwezig, dus op dat vlak konden geen tests worden verricht. Toch maakt de combinatie van een nette layout, goede stabiliteit en hoge performance dit bord tot een absolute aanrader:

If you can't tell already, I really like the Tyan Tiger MP. As a matter of fact, I think it lends itself to the Athlon much better than even the Thunder K7. With the Athlon MP processors being so inexpensive, you can now put together an entire workstation class machine using AMD processors for a very reasonable price.

On top of that, you know you won't be sacrificing performance. As a matter of fact, the Tiger MP seems to perform slightly better than the Thunder K7. This is probably just because Tyan has had more time to work on the Tiger MP. In any event, you can tell the engineers at Tyan spent some serious time thinking this board out.

The layout is great, the performance is good, the stability is top notch, and the price can't be beat. The only answer I can think of to the Tiger MP right now in terms of price/performance, is Intels dual Tualatin 512kb L2 cache processors. I will be reviewing those soon, and it will be very interesting to see whether the Tiger MP holds its own. Until then, great job Tyan.

Zo ongeveer iedere geregistreerde gebruiker wees ons op het feit dat Internet Explorer 6 vandaag is gereleased. De langverwachte nieuwe versie van de meest gebruikte browser komt met een heel scala aan nieuwe features en zijn er een aantal zaken herzien, zodat het bezoeken van webpagina's vlekkelozer moet verlopen.

Niet alleen Internet Explorer is van een nieuw versienummer voorzien, ook de gratis mail- en news-client Outlook Express (OE) is nu in versie 6 verkrijgbaar. Meest in het oogspringende feature aldaar is de default setting dat OE niet meer ongevraagd email gaat zenden, bijvoorbeeld omdat een virus daar opdracht toe geeft.

Internet Explorer 6 heeft, naast de meteen opvallende nieuwe image-resizing/handling features, een nieuwe privacy feature genaamd 'P3P'. Dit nieuwe, door de W3C gestandaardiseerde, systeem is bedoeld om ongewenste inbreuken in de privacy van de gebruiker door cookieplaatsende, en daardoor site-bezoek 'trackende', sites te voorkomen:

VNUNET.nl schrijft dat IBM erin is geslaagd om een simpel logisch circuit te bouwen van koolstof nanobuizen. Met nanobuizen moet het mogelijk zijn om processors te bakken die tienduizend keer meer transistors bevatten dan de huidige siliciumchips. Het circuit wat IBM heeft gebouwd bestaat uit slechts twee transistors. Met behulp van een positieve en negatieve transistor hebben ze een NOT port in elkaar geknutseld. Voorheen konden de mannen van IBM geen negatieve transistors maken met nanobuizen waardoor logische schakelingen niet mogelijk waren. IBM verwacht de technologie over tien à 15 jaar klaar te hebben voor productie, dezelfde periode die staat voor het bereiken van de fysieke grens van silicium:

Met nanobuizen, minuscule cilindrische constructies van koolstofatomen die honderdduizend keer dunner zijn dan een menselijke haar, is het volgens IBM mogelijk processoren te ontwikkelen die tienduizend maal meer transistoren bevatten dan de huidige silicium-varianten. Het gebruik van nanobuizen zorgt er tevens voor dat chips minder energie verbruiken en minder warmte afgeven dan hun broertjes van silicium.

Dat is maar goed ook, want wetenschappers verwachten dat de fysieke grens van silicium over 10 à 15 jaar bereikt is. Ongeveer de periode die IBM denkt nodig te hebben om zijn technologie in productvorm op de markt te hebben.

Momenteel heeft Big Blue niet meer dan een uit twee transistoren bestaand circuit. Het gaat om een zogeheten NOT-poort, de meest simpele van de drie fundamentele circuits die de basis vormen van een microprocessor. Een NOT-poort is een schakeling die bestaat uit een positieve en een negatieve transistor. Hierdoor is het mogelijk een 1 in een 0 te veranderen en vice versa.
