Het wereldberoemde merk Azza () heeft als één van de eerste spreekwoordelijke schapen twee moederborden gebaseerd op de VIA P4X266 chipset aangekondigd, daarmee de waarschuwing van Intel de wind in slaande. De borden heten P4X2-AD en P4X2-AV en zijn beide voorzien van een Socket478 en een drietal PC2100 DDR SDRAM slots, waarin maximaal 1,5GB unbuffered of 3GB registered geheugen geplaatst kan worden. Ook zijn AGP, zes PCI, twee ATA-100 IDE kanalen en CNR van de partij. Daarnaast is een Winbond chip aanwezig die de nodige informatie over de temperatuur en status van het systeem kan doorspelen. Beide modellen lijken alleen te verschillen op het gebied van onboard audio, maar erg duidelijk zijn de gegevens niet. Check OCWorkbench voor meer specs.

C|Net schrijft dat Texas Instruments komende maandag de eerste demonstratie van een IEEE 1394.b transmissie zal geven. De huidige IEEE 1394 standaard staat beter bekend onder zijn alias FireWire en is een veelgebruikte methode ontwikkeld door Apple om onder andere digitale videocamera's aan de PC te koppelen. De vuurdraad zal in de toekomst rechtstreeks moeten concurreren met USB 2.0 voor de plaats als standaard op de PC markt. Hoewel de tweede versie van USB nog nieuw is en er nog nauwelijks toepassingen te krijgen zijn komt er veel steun vanuit het bedrijfsleven, hoewel niet iedereen het met elkaar eens is. De nieuwe versie van FireWire heeft niet alleen twee keer zoveel bandbreedte tot zijn beschikking als zijn jongere broertje (800Mbps, tegenover 480Mbps voor USB 2.0), maar staat ook nog eens langere kabels toe, zowel met glasvezel als met traditionele koperbedrading:

Although USB 2.0 promises a cheaper high-speed interface, it has been slow in coming. Products using the connection technology are just now coming to market and won't really be in widespread use until at least next year. USB 2.0 is designed to transfer data at 480mbps, while today's FireWire can move information at a rate of 400mbps.

Personal Cinema noemt men het en het is een compleet pakket van videokaart met break-out box om het werken met dingen als DVD, TV en (digitale) videocamera's zo makkelijk mogelijk te maken. Het opvallend gekleurde kastje bespaart de klant de halsbrekende pogingen om de achterkant van hun PC te bereiken iedere keer als er een kabel aangesloten moet worden en met de meegeleverde afstandsbediening is het in veel gevallen zelfs niet meer nodig om de bank te verlaten. Ace's Hardware rapporteert dat AMD op het aankomende microprocessor forum een hoop technische informatie betreffende de K8 Hammer processor-serie zal vrijgeven. Onder andere de instructieset, pipeline, cache en businterface van de eerste 64 bit AMD chips zullen uit de doeken worden gedaan tussen de presentaties van andere producenten zoals Intel, Transmeta, VIA en Motorola. De eerste K8 processors zijn Sledgehammer en Clawhammer, beide 0,13 micron SOI chips die gebruik maken van de door AMD ontwikkelde x86-64 instructieset, die backwards compatible is met de huidige software. SledgeHammer is de uitvoering voor zware servers en zal volgens geruchten uit twee cores op één chip bestaan. ClawHammer is een heel stuk lichtere uitvoering voor kleinere servers en zware workstations.

Verder bericht de site dat er zeer binnenkort een Duron MP zal worden gelanceerd. Fysiek verschilt deze chip op geen enkele manier van de normale Duron, maar je krijgt er wel de garantie van AMD bij dat hij betrouwbaar werkt in de meest extreme SMP opstellingen. Volgens DigiTimes heeft het bedrijf overigens nog geen haast om een nieuwe fabriek neer te planten. Hoewel Dresden waarschijnlijk eind dit jaar aan zijn top zit zal volgens de berekingen van AMD het kleinere 0,13 micron procédé, dat in de eerste helft van volgend jaar in gebruik wordt genomen, genoeg zijn om tot eind 2002 aan de vraag te kunnen blijven voldoen:

Currently, AMD outsources the production of its 760 and 761 chipsets to United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and the market speculated that UMC might be the company’s future partner. UMC chairman Robert Tsao said that although the proposed project is not really necessary in terms of finance, UMC would still welcome any proposal that deepens its cooperation with its client. Meyer would not comment on AMD’s choice of future partners, but he said that AMD would not rule out the possibility of working with a Taiwanese company.

AMD zal je processor vervangen door een nieuw exemplaar als het probleem - dat zichtbaar wordt bij het bekijken van bepaalde JPEG en/of MPEG beelden - aanwezig blijkt te zijn op je core.

ALi heeft vandaag haar ALADDiN-P4 M1671 Pentium 4-chipset officieel aangekondigd. Het belangrijkste kenmerk van deze chip is de ondersteuning van DDR333-geheugen (PC2700), maar ook PC133 SDRAM is bruikbaar in combinatie met de ALADDiN-P4. Aangezien de productie van PC2700 reepjes slechts enkele dagen geleden op gang is gekomen, zullen de eerste M1671-moederborden waarschijnlijk in PC1600/PC2100 uitvoeringen verschijnen. Verder zegt ALi dat de gebruikte Southbridge geschikt is voor 'new high-speed ATA devices', waarbij we waarschijnlijk aan ATA/133 moeten denken. We moeten nog wel tot oktober wachten, want pas dan wordt de chipset in massaproductie genomen:

Op de website van ATi is vandaag de Mobility Radeon 7500 onthuld. Deze mobiele versie van de langverwachte Radeon 2 heeft het grootste deel van de features van zijn desktopbroertje overgenomen, maar biedt als extra PowerPlay technologie. Net als tegenwoordig gebruikelijk is bij processors kan de mobiele videochip zijn voltage en kloksnelheid on-the-fly aanpassen. Op die manier moet de accu van je schoothondje tijdens het afspelen van een DVD-film tot 25 procent langer meegaan. De OEM's kunnen kiezen als geheugen kiezen voor maximaal 32MB geïntegreerd of 64MB DDR extern. De eerste benchmarks van de nieuwkomer in notebookland zijn te vinden bij Inquest en zien er zeer veelbelovend uit; de GeForce2 Go van nVidia moet in alle benchmarks stof happen en tijdens het afspelen van een scene uit "The Matrix" gebruikt de Mobility Radeon 7500 minder dan de helft van het CPU-vermogen dat de GeForce2 Go opeist tijdens dezelfde scene. In de hooggedetailleerde "Dragothic" scene van 3DMark 2001 is ATi's nieuwe speeltje zelfs meer dan drie keer zo snel:

Max Page van FrostyTech brengt ons een review van de Neng Tyi SN05. Deze heatsink ziet er net uit als zijn broertje, de SN03, maar gebruikt daarentegen aluminium vinnen om er voor te zorgen dat de koeler niet al te zwaar is. Het gewicht van de koeler is echter nog steeds hoog, namelijk 378 gram. De SN05 komt met een Nidec Beta SL fan, die 4700 rondjes per minuut draait, een airflow van 16CFM veroorzaakt en daarbij 32dBa aan lawaai genereert. Uit de Synthetic Temperature Test resultaten is te concluderen dat je deze heatsink absoluut niet moet kopen, tenzij je natuurlijk graag een warme CPU wil hebben. De heatsink komt namelijk helemaal onder in het lijstje met reference coolers te staan. Hieronder nog een stukje uit de conclusie:

One of the great things about numbers is they never lie, and in this case there isn't much we can say to make a 40 degree result on the small copper die template look anywhere near rosy.

But if you care to turn your attention to the large copper die template test you will of course notice some very find results there. 24 degrees is relatively high, but it is sill a good performance indicator on this large heatspreader based processors - which don't really exist at this wattage anymore, but what the heck, the VIA C3 is available and would be applicable.

Luke Roberts stuurde ons een link naar VIA Hardware waar wordt onderzocht of de data-corruption bug van de SoundBlaster Live! in combinatie met VIA's 686B southbridge (wordt o.a. gebruikt voor de KT133A en de KT266) uit de wereld is geholpen. Nadat het probleem was ontdekt zijn er namelijk zowel onofficiële als officiële patches uitgebracht (BIOS-updates, nieuwe VIA 4-in-1 drivers) die het euvel moesten verhelpen.

Helaas heeft dit niet altijd geholpen. VIA Hardware testte een VIA KT133A, VIA KT266 en een Intel i815 plank i.c.m. 5 verschillende geluidskaarten, waaronder de Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! Value met de Emu10k-chip. Grote bestanden werden getransporteerd terwijl tegelijkertijd MP3's werden gespeeld. Hieruit bleek dat bij KT133A-moederborden waarvoor géén BIOS-update voor de bug is uitgekomen nog steeds data-corruption optreedt, ondanks de nieuwe VIA 4-in-1 drivers. Alleen de PCI Latency Patch van George Breese bleek een goede oplossing te zijn. VIA's KT266-chipset had geen problemen. Wel zorgt de SoundBlaster Live! voor het vervelende audio-skipping, ongeacht welke chipset wordt gebruikt. Vanwege de ontbrekende PCI Bus Mastering-ondersteuning van de geluidskaart wordt er overmatig gebruik gemaakt van de PCI-bus, een probleem waar geen algemene oplossing voor is. Wil je dus echt van alle problemen verlost zijn, dan zul je hoogstwaarschijnlijk je SoundBlaster Live! moeten vervangen...

There are many possible answers to why the data corruption occurs. The most common answer to the issue points to Creative to be at fault. When Creative designed the SB Live, they didn’t design it to support PCI Bus mastering, therefore when in use, the SB Live hogs the PCI bus. More can be read about this issue in WiNC’s 686B FAQ.

When George’s PCI Latency patch is applied, data corruption doesn’t occur yet audio skipping still does. After asking people around, it seems I am not the only one to experience audio skipping with the SB Live, other users even i815 users have the same problem in Windows 2000 as well. This is known to happen on almost every chipset except the i850.

When moving to a KT266 or i815 platform, data corruption goes away but audio skipping still occurs. This problem is mostly experienced when using WDM drivers. Creative should be able to fix the skipping problem because the WDM drivers built into Windows XP don’t have any audio problems at the sacrifice of EAX and most hardware features.

When the same testing routine was used on the other sound cards, no data corruption or audio skipping occurred, which isn’t much of a surprise since most users were able to rectify the problem by upgrading to other sound cards such as the Santa Cruz.

Bij Yahoo is een press release te vinden waarin Plextor's Portable CD-RW drive wordt aangekondigd. De PlexWriter 8/8/24U is licht van gewicht, compact en wordt verbonden met USB 2.0. Zoals de naam al aangeeft schrijft het beestje op 8x, herschrijft 'ie op 8x en worden CD's op maximaal 24x gelezen. Mensen met een USB 1.1 connectie kunnen slechts branden op 4x, herschrijven op 4x en lezen op 6x. De brander beschikt over een buffer van 2MB en kan verschillende schrijfmodi aan, zoals Track-at-Once, Dics-at-Once, Session-at-Once en Multisession. Een Plextor zou een Plextor niet zijn als er geen BURN-Proof aanwezig was, daarom beschikt deze portable drive ook over deze technologie. De drive is al beschikbaar en de aanbevolen verkoopsprijs voor retailers is 289 dollar. Hieronder nog een stuk uit de press-release:

Microsoft heeft de introductie van de X-box spelcomputer op de Japanse markt uitgesteld tot 22 februari volgend jaar. Eigenlijk zouden de Japanners voor Kerstmis dit nieuwe speeltje al kunnen kopen. Microsoft ontkent dat productieproblemen voor het uitstel van de introductie in Japan hebben gezorgd. De introductie van de spelcomputer in de Verenigde Staten blijft namelijk wel op dezelfde datum staan, namelijk 8 november. Hieronder een hap uit het artikel.

But Microsoft has steadfastly maintained that there are no manufacturing issues and that it will meet its production schedule and targets. Vandaag verschenen officieel Intel's 1,9GHz en 2GHz Pentium 4 processors. Het is een begin en tegelijkertijd een einde. Het zijn de snelste en laatste varianten van de Pentium 4 die een Willamette core bevatten. Tegelijkertijd maken deze CPU's, met hun nieuwe Socket478, de weg vrij voor de komst van een nieuwe generatie 0,13micron processors die straks, na een BIOS upgrade, hetzelfde mainboard en Socket kunnen gaan gebruiken.

Het bereiken van de 2GHz barrière, is een mijlpaal te noemen voor commerciële processors. Alleen al vanwege de psychologische factor van een mooi rond getal. Nu de NDA's verstreken zijn, springen de reviews dan ook als paddestoelen uit de grond. Zo hebben inmiddels AnandTech, The Tech Report, Source Magazin, Extreme Tech en een gestaag groeiend aantal andere tech sites, hun reviews online gegooid. En onze vriend Akiba heeft ze inmiddels ook al in de winkel zien liggen.

Verloor vorig jaar Intel nog de race met AMD om de 1GHz barrière, vandaag zijn de rollen eigenlijk omgedraaid. Vrijwel alle sites zijn het er over eens, dat wat absolute kloksnelheid en overall performance betreft, Intel's 2GHz Pentium 4 op dit moment als CPU het meeste in huis heeft en als nieuwe 'King of speed' de kroon op de heatspreader mag plaatsen. Ondanks een lagere IPC van de Pentium 4 met de huidige 0,18 micron core (Willamette), compenseren 600MHz de minder sterke kanten van de Pentium 4 in legacy software ten opzichte van de 1,4GHz Athlon, vrijwel geheel. Om daarnaast in de andere (geheugenintensievere) benchmarks de 1,4GHz Athlon het nakijken te geven.

Daarmee is de Athlon nog geenszins uit het veld geslagen. Het blijft een snelle processor met sterke kanten, zeker gezien de scherpe prijsstelling. Maar ook op dat vlak worden de verschillen allengs kleiner en het wordt duidelijk dat AMD, wil de kroon weer heroverd en gewonnen marktaandeel verdedigd worden, de 1,5GHz Palomino op korte termijn leverbaar zal moeten maken. Om vervolgens de consument duidelijk te maken, dat MHz-en niet altijd direct met elkaar vergelijkbaar zijn. Dat laatste kan nog wel eens een zware dobber worden. Zeker wanneer op niet al te lange termijn Intel's volgende stappen gezet worden, naar verdere performanceverhoging en prijsreducties per 28 oktober: De 2,2GHz Pentium 4 Northwood, gebakken op 0,13micron proces met ondermeer 512KB L2 cache:

At 2GHz the Pentium 4 is even more competitive with the Athlon than it has ever been before. If it weren’t for such a large price discrepancy between the two processors then the recommendation would be a tough one to make but for now the price to performance ratio of the Athlon continues to be superior to the Pentium 4. If price isn’t a concern, then it’s worth noting there are some situations in which the Pentium 4 2.0GHz is noticeably more than what AMD’s current flagship can offer. What you really must take away from this review is that the potential for the Pentium 4’s future is becoming more and more visible as the processor matures.

The Northwood core will bring even more attractive performance to the Pentium 4 and a continually increasing clock speed before the year’s end. While we seriously doubt Intel will introduce the 133MHz FSB this year, it would only make sense for Intel to eventually transition the Pentium 4 to a 133MHz FSB. A 0 – 14% increase in performance across the board isn’t bad at all, not to mention what kind of an increase you’d expect with a similar boost in memory bandwidth as well. Intel’s 850 chipset already works fine at this frequency as does VIA’s P4X266 chipset; the only thing that’s left is official support from Intel. [break]Update: Inmiddels heeft Tom's Hardware ook nog een review geplaatst. Voor het eerst sinds lange tijd, maakt Tom een compliment aan Intel, wat de Pentium 4 betreft:[/break] Benchmarking Pentium 4 against Athlon is a controversial thing. The right choice of applications can either make the one or the other look better or worse. Intel's new Pentium 4 at 2 GHz however is beating AMD's fastest Athlon in the majority of frequently used applications and deserves therefore the title 'fastest PC processor'. Intel won the 2 GHz race and it also retook the crown of the maker of the fastest CPU. You can also not complain about Intel's latest pricing policy. Intel processors never had a better price/performance ratio. For users of new and Pentium 4 optimized software the price/performance is even better than that of AMD's Athlon processor, which is a complete novelty. I am hesitant, but in a way we have to respect those facts and congratulate Intel.

Bij SourceMagazine is een review te vinden van de Seagate Barracuda IV. Deze ATA-100 harddisk van 80GB heeft een cache van 2MB en draait 7200rpm. Het Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) systeem van SoftSonic zorgt voor een flink lagere geluidsproductie bij de Barracuda IV. In de test wordt vergeleken met een IBM 75GB ATA-100, die een iets lagere toegangstijd heeft. Bij de Winbench 99 benchmark scoort de Barracuda IV echter over het algemeen beter:

While the Read Burst Speed, and Random Access Time is a little faster on the IBM verse the Seagate drive, the IBM can’t maintain that speed over the long haul, and starts to drop off quickly. The average Read speed on the Barracuda ATA IV is about 4,300kps faster then the IBM, but it loses its lead over slightly with the average Write Speed test. One other notable feature about the Seagate drive is that it consistently uses less CPU cycles to get the job done, so there is less of a performance hit on the processor, even though there isn’t a huge difference every little bit helps. Next up on the list of tests is Winbench 99 to test the “real world” performance.

[...] The tests show that the Seagate Barracuda ATA IV drive keeps fairly close in-line the company’s claims. It is a very fast drive and performs very well, especially considering how much storage capacity there is. The Barracuda is also, by far, the quietest drive we’ve heard (or should I say - not heard). This drive should be a big hit with OEM’s looking to virtually silent performance systems, or home users that are tired of a standard clunking, whining hard drive.

De mannen van PCstats.com hebben een review in elkaar geknutseld over de opvolger van de Blue Orb, de Orange Orb. De Orange Orb is iets kleiner dan de Blue Orb wat een PCI slot scheelt als je hem installeert op een videokaart. Daarnaast is de Orange Orb in tegenstelling tot de Blue Orb gemaakt uit één stuk metaal waardoor hij, ondanks het formaat, beter weet te presteren dan de Blorb. Alleen het bevestigingsmechanisme (en de kleur IMHO) zijn er niet op vooruit gegaan:

I was a little surprised with the results from the Blue orb, I was honestly expecting it to be a more efficient heatsink than the Orange Orb, but I guess that the full contact base and one piece design are more important than sheer surface area and fan speed... I even cleaned off the thermal paste and re-applied just in case I'd put too much on when I attached the Blorb, but same results. I'd like to do this again with an Asus card with built in temperature measurement sometime soon.

Overall, I can recommend the Orange orb to anyone who is currently using a passive heatsink on their video card (provided you make sure the clips stay clear of the fan). For replacing stock active heatsinks on newer cards like the Geforce3, I have my doubts that it is going to make much of a difference. I will test this as soon as I get the chance, but please let me know if you have already tried it. If you already have a Blue orb and you really want to use your first PCI slot, consider this BGA heatsink a must buy.

Philips heeft op de IFA 2001 in Berlijn haar DVD recorder DVDR1000 geïntroduceerd. Inmiddels is de DVD+RW recorder daar verkozen tot 'European Digital Video Recorder of the year 2001-2002'. Het apparaat gaat zo'n f 4.700,- kosten en komt in september op de winkelschappen te staan. De DVDR1000 kan niet alleen DVD en CD-R/RW schijfjes afspelen, maar ook DVD+RW's opnemen. Daarbij wordt gebruik gemaakt van Variable Bit Rate (VBR) MPEG2 video encoding, dat ook toegepast wordt op voorbespeelde DVD schijfjes.

Er zijn vier verschillende opname instellingen: in de 1-hour recording mode worden alle analoge stappen overgeslagen en is daarmee geschikt om een digitale kopie te maken van bijvoorbeeld een digitale camcorder tape. De 2-hour recording mode is kwalitatief gelijkwaardig aan voorbespeelde DVD's, terwijl de 3- en 4-hour recording modes langere opnames mogelijk maken, waarbij de kwaliteit nog steeds beter is dan die van VHS. De verschillende modes kunnen (per opname) door elkaar heen gebruikt worden, op één en hetzelfde rewritable DVD schijfje. Geluid wordt digitaal omgezet in Dolby Digital AC-3/2.0 formaat. Outstanding digital quality is another big advantage of recordings made with the DVDR1000. Variable bit-rate (VBR) technology is applied in order to provide the optimum recording quality possible at the given recording length. A high bit-rate - in other words more digital data – is used for maximum representation of detail in complex and dynamic scenes, and a lower bit-rate is used to save disc space when recording simpler, more static scenes. When recording from analog sources the DVDR1000 gives superior, even better-than-original picture quality. This is achieved by a unique combination of advanced features in the DVD which eliminates video jitter, and which also enhances picture quality by pre-filtering the incoming analog video signals before they are encoded for digital recording.
