Bij x-bit labs is het bericht verschenen dat VIA bijna klaar is voor een agressieve introductie van haar Pentium 4 DDR chipset, de P4X266. De reference moederplanken zijn al klaar en er is ook al een klein voorraadje chipsets aangelegd. De introductie zal waarschijnlijk midden augustus plaats vinden en de chipset zal 25 à 30 procent goedkoper geprijsd zijn dan de Intel Brookdale chipset (PC133). Het is nog even afwachten wat er gaat gebeuren omtrent de licentieaffaire:
However, Intel hasn’t yet granted VIA a license for Pentium4 system bus, as the company is afraid to lose the i845 market. Driven by the same ideas, Intel insists that its closest partners, such as MSI, ASUS, etc. do not order any P4X266 chipsets from VIA to develop boards on. However, if Intel granted VIA a license for the Pentium4 bus, it could be good for both: VIA would be happy to launch its new chipset legally while Intel could increase the sales of Pentium 4 processors. However, in this case Intel would definitely lose a part of the chipset market, as Brookdale were no longer that attractive against the background of VIA P4X266. So, it looks that Intel will do its best to avoid this situation. In other words, VIA will see no license and we can get ready to follow the lawsuit thing. We have no idea who the winner will be, but there is not so much waiting left.
