If you already have a VIA KT266 board then obviously stick with it. The upgrade for the SiS 735 just isn’t worth it. There are only two upgrades I would consider over the current KT266 or 735 chipsets and that is the new revised KT266 or the much hyped about NVIDIA nForce, both of which should be available very soon. The key feature that has captured many people with the nForce is the dual channel DDR-RAM. My advice is if you have a board with either the AMD 760, VIA KT266 the upgrade to the SiS 735 won’t be a smart move. However if you are using an older SDR based chipset the upgrade to DDR platform may be a valuable move especially if you are stuck with only a 200MHz FSB. So, what are you going to upgrade to? I recommend either the KT266 or SiS 735. I am basing my decision on the performance I have just seen from both chipsets and they’re both very well priced.
I do tend to lean towards the KT266 at this stage for a few reasons. The KT266 has been out for much longer and has given VIA time to iron out all the bugs, the SiS 735 has just hit the streets and even know there have been no bugs reported and I have had no problems there is still that possibility where something could go wrong. Another concern I have is the support SiS will offer, both customer support and driver support hasn’t been SiS’s strongest point in the past and is something that could scare people away. VIA on the other hand have reasonable customer support and excellent driver support with frequent updates.
