Jonathan Martini heeft op Envy News een review online gezet over de MouseSkatez. Dit zijn een soort stukjes plastic die je onder je muis kan plakken met als doel je muis soepeler te laten glijden. Volgens de reviewer werkt het spul prima, hoewel het wel afhangt van de muismat die je gebruikt. Als je al een erg gladde mat hebt is het effect lang niet zo groot als bij een stoffen mat. Of iedereen graag weinig wrijving wilt hebben is natuurlijk de vraag, maar voor $6,95 ga je er in ieder geval niet failliet aan:

Bij Riva Station is een review verschenen van de 3D Prophet 4500 64MB van Hercules. Deze kaart is uitgerust met de Kyro II chip en 64MB aan SDRAM wat allemaal op 175MHz loopt. Omdat de Kyro II gebruik maakt van tile-based rendering laten de benchmarks mooie resultaten zien. In 32-bit waar alle andere kaarten last hebben van een bandbreedte bottleneck kan deze low-budget kaart in veel gevallen de GeForce2 GTS en ATi Radeon 32MB DDR voorbij fietsen.

Het ontbreken van Transform en Lighting is jammer genoeg wel een klein minpuntje, maar voor mensen met een normale CPU geen zwaar probleem. Ook qua overclocken is de kaart geen wonder. Hoewel de Prophet 4500 uitgerust is met 64MB aan 5.0ns geheugen komt de core en het geheugen niet verder dan 180MHz. Hoewel er dus wel een paar kleine minpunten zijn is de reviewer erg positief over deze kaart. Ongeveer GeForce2 GTS performance voor ongeveer een GeForce2 MX prijs is natuurlijk erg aantrekkelijk:

Insgesammt bleibt nur eines zu sagen: Eine Top Karte zu einem Top Preis, bei dem man kaum etwas falsch machen kann! Die 3D Prophet 4500 bietet praktisch GTS Performance zum MX Preis.

De Franse website NVchips heeft goed nieuws gekregen over de Elsa Gladiac 920 videokaart. Deze is uitgerust met nVidia's gloednieuwe GeForce3 chipset en de aangekondigde prijs was daarom ook vrij hoog; rond de $550. Elsa heeft echter ingezien dat dit bedrag toch een beetje te veel was voor een kaart die op dit moment weinig extra voordelen boven de GeForce2 Ultra kan bieden. Volgens de bron van de site heeft het bedrijf dan ook besloten dit bedrag met $150 te verlagen, ondanks het feit dat hij nog niet in de winkels heeft gelegen. De uiteindelijk startprijs komt nu dicht tegen die van de GeForce2 Ultra aan te liggen:

Zoals al wel te verwachten was heeft Kremen op deze manier enorm veel inkomsten moeten missen, wat gecompenseerd zal worden door een vergoeding van 40 miljoen dollar. Hier bovenop zal Cohen ook nog eens 25 miljoen dollar boete moeten betalen wegens zijn duistere praktijken:

Een Amerikaanse rechtbank heeft een verspreider van pornografie die de internetdomeinnaam sex.com had gekraakt, veroordeeld tot het betalen van een schadevergoeding van 65 miljoen dollar.

De federale rechter James Ware achtte bewezen dat Stephen Cohen zich schuldig heeft gemaakt aan fraude en vervalsing. Bij de uitspraak van de rechter, die dinsdagavond laat (lokale tijd) naar buiten werd gebracht, zit ook een arrestatiebevel tegen Cohen. Hij moet vastgezet worden totdat hij al zijn bezittingen heeft overgedragen aan de rechtbank.

Bij AnandTech heeft men een vergelijking gemaakt van de verschillende chipsets die er op dit moment verkrijgbaar zijn voor Socket A processoren. In de vergelijking worden natuurlijk moederborden met de AMD 760, ALi MAGiK 1 en VIA KT133A chipsets tegenover elkaar gezet, waarvan de eerste twee ondersteuning bieden voor DDR SDRAM. Helaas is VIA's KT266 chipset nog niet opgenomen in deze shootout.

Om de vergelijking eerlijk te houden worden moederborden van hetzelfde merk getest, in dit geval Asus. Specifiek gaat het om de A7M266, A7A266 en de A7V133. Alledrie de moederborden zijn gewoon te koop. Er wordt niet gekeken naar overclockperformance of de mogelijkheden van een specifiek moederbord; het gaat puur om een vergelijking van de verschillende platforms.

Recent is het gebleken dat VIA's KT133A veel van de performance wist te bieden van de AMD 760. Waar eerst werd gedacht dat de 760 zo'n stuk sneller was dan VIA's oudere KT133 vanwege de ondersteuning van DDR SDRAM, bleek dat dus niet helemaal zo te zijn toen de KT133A uitkwam. Velen trokken toen de conclusie dat de verbetering was te danken aan de hogere FSB (133MHz DDR tegenover 100MHz DDR bij de KT133). Dat is aan de ene kant wel waar, maar Anand doet hier de ontdekking dat dit komt vanwege de latencies. Dit is goed te zien in het volgende diagram:

De latencies van de 100/100 (FSB/geheugen) en de 100/133 setup zijn hetzelfde. Maar als er weer met een synchrone klok wordt gedraaid, dus op 133/133, is goed te zien dat de latency met maar liefst 30 cycles daalt! Dit is volgens Anand de verklaring voor het snelheidsverschil tussen de KT133 en de KT133A. Wat ook opvalt is dat AMD zijn eigen processor heel goed lijkt te kennen en de 760 chipset dus enorm snel toegang tot het geheugen kan krijgen. Dit valt niet te zeggen van ALi, waarbij sommige setups voor een dramatisch hoge latency zorgen.

In de real-world benchmarks komt steeds hetzelfde beeld terug. Top-performer is de AMD 760 met PC2100 geheugen, op de tweede plaats komt meestal de KT133A chipset en af en toe ALi's MAGiK 1 (ook met PC2100). De latencies lijken dus vooralsnog voor de meeste programma's zeer belangrijk. Slechts in enkele tests is duidelijk dat het snelle DDR geheugen een rol speelt, en in dat geval staat de MAGiK 1 dus een treetje hoger dat de KT133A.

De AMD 760 is dus absoluut de snelste van de drie geteste chipsets, maar dat is niet altijd dankzij de ondersteuning van DDR SDRAM. De conclusie is dan ook als volgt:

Without a doubt, the AMD 760 platform is the fastest out of the three chipsets compared here today. AMD has tweaked the chipset to the point where it offers lower latency memory transfers than even solutions using regular SDRAM. The memory read and write performance of the AMD 760 is the best you can get when it comes to the chipsets compared here, and it will offer you the best performance you can buy. Whether or not the performance it does give you is worth the added price premium is another question, and that is one that you, yourself must answer.

Now that we know the secret behind why the KT133A performed so well in our tests we can truly say that today's applications and games aren't stressing the memory bandwidth portion of the equation enough to demand a higher bandwidth solution such as PC2100 DDR SDRAM. However, as applications and games become more demanding and as the CPU clock to memory clock ratio increases, the need for a higher bandwidth memory solution will definitely be present. That time however, is not yet upon us.

We have seen how large of a part latency can play in either making or braking a chipset. In the case of the ALi MAGiK1, its extremely high latencies prevent it from being as attractive of a solution for the performance enthusiasts as even the KT133A or especially the AMD 760. The only thing the MAGiK1 has going for it is its support for SDRAM, which is something that OEMs will definitely appreciate. It wouldn't be too surprising if the ASUS A7A266 with its SDRAM and DDR SDRAM memory slots became quite a favorite among OEMs.

Digit Life heeft wat plaatjes gepost van een drietal nieuwe GeForce2 MX kaarten van Suma. De eerste is een vrij standaard MX200 kaartje die zich braaf aan nVidia's specificaties houdt; 175MHz core en 166MHz 64 bit SDR geheugen. De twee andere kaarten zijn een stukje krachtiger, beide zijn voorzien van 32MB 183MHz SDR geheugen met een 128 bit bus en Suma's SIF filter, dat moet zorgen voor een betere 2D kwaliteit. Het verschil tussen de twee is dat de GeForce2 MX Power Up een core van 175MHz heeft en die van de hieronder afgebeelde MX400 op 200MHz draait:

nVidia's hoofd public relations Brain Burke heeft gereageerd op het document dat gisteren uitlekte waarin nVidia de Kyro II videochip zwart maakt. Het bedrijf geeft beschaamd toe dat de presentatie echt is, maar ontkent dat de informatie die er in staat voor het publiek of potentiële klanten was bedoeld. Volgens nVidia werd de tekst gebruikt om haar eigen verkopers te motiveren en te leren hoe ze moeten ingaan op vragen die klanten over de Kyro II stellen. Ook Derek Perek vertelt bijna precies hetzelfde verhaal:

Bij HardOCP is een review verschenen van Epox' 3VHA moederbord. Dit is een Socket370 plankje met 6 PCI slots en de VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset. De tekst begint met een uitgebreid verslag over de layout, waarop een aantal punten zijn aan te merken, zoals de minder handig geplaatste stroomaansluiting. Daarnaast wordt er gekeken naar de overklok-mogelijkheden. Het plankje bleek uitermate stabiel tot en met 146MHz FSB, geen geweldig hoog getal, maar wel gelijk met de resultaten die dezelfde processor op andere borden haalde. Hoewel er veel benchmarks gedaan zijn wordt er alleen gekeken naar het verschil tussen de default instellingen en resultaten na het overklokken. De conclusie is dus niet gebaseerd op prestaties in verhouding tot de concurrentie, maar wel positief:

The EP-3VHA has quite a lot going for it. Cutting edge technology, great overclocking potential, and a high degree of stability, to name a few things. With six PCI slots, there's plenty of internal room for expansion. And with it's six available USB ports, future external expansion of your system should never be a problem either. Sure, EPoX made some questionable ergonomic decisions with the 3VHA. But if you can overlook, or work around the oddly placed power supply connector, then you may just have the motherboard of your dreams here. I considered discussing the merits of DDR, but that's not what this article is about. It's about EPoX's EP-3VHA motherboard. Without having any other DDR experience to work with, I can't tell you that you should not pick up this board, because some other other DDR Socket370 board on the market is a better buy. I can, however, tell you with reasonable assurance that you will be more then pleased with EPoX's EP-3VHA should you choose to build a system based off of it.

HardOCP-baas Kyle is het daar mee eens, maar voegt aan de conclusie van de reviewer toe dat het weinig nut heeft om te upgraden naar een Pentium III met DDR geheugen, omdat de rek er gewoon uit is.

Neoseeker heeft een review gecomponeerd van Plextor's PlexWriter 16/10/40A IDE CD-rewriter. Zoals je uit de naam al af kunt leiden een apparaat dat CD-R's met 16-voudige snelheid kan branden, CD-RW's met 10-voudige snelheid volschrijft en ze bovendien ook meer met 40-voudige snelheid kan teruglezen. Daarnaast is het beestje voorzien van de BurnProof technologie, zodat buffer-underruns niet meer (mogen) voorkomen en je CD's dus altijd lukken.

De PlexWriter wordt in de review vergeleken met de Iomega ZipCD re-writer, een 12x10x32 model. In vrijwel alle benchmarks is de Plextor beduidend sneller: een CD-RW is bijvoorbeeld in 12 minuten geformatteerd, daar waar de Iomega (óók 10-speed met CD-RW's) er een slordige 16 minuten over doet. Al met al een snelle en betrouwbare re-writer, die dan ook volgens de reviewer een echte aanrader is:

Not surprisingly the Plextor drive scores about average in CD-RW tests since it's a 10x re-writer. On the writing tests it scored marginally lower than the Iomega ZipCD drive. These differences are marginal though; the Plextor drive’s CD-RW write times are amongst the faster 10x write speeds I’ve seen.

The Plextor drive pulled far ahead on the CD-RW format, cutting just under four minutes off the time to format a CD-RW. The Plextor drive’s quick erase times were also faster by 27 seconds or over a third. These time savings are quite impressive; I hate to wait for one of my CD-RW disks to format so the four minute savings is quite useful.

Conclusion
The Plextor PX-W1610TA is an excellent drive; Its fast burn times coupled with BURN-Fast technology make it is an excellent choice in terms of CD burning power. It’s 40x read times are extremely fast for a CD burner, and it’s great scores as a CD Rewriter make it excel in that field also. I loved using this drive and highly recommend it to others.

Bij Tech-Planet hebben ze eens gekeken naar de prestaties van de GlobalWin WBK38. Deze Socket cooler heeft een 6800rpm fansnelheid, een airflow van 37,61 CFM en produceert 46.5 dBa aan herrie. In de test werd de cooler vergeleken met een ThermalTake Super Orb en de GlobalWin WBK68, die beiden het onderspit moesten delven. De conclusie is dan ook positief:

From the graph, we can see that the ThermalTake Super Orb is behind the pack of GlobalWin coolers. Even though they are equally priced, I would be inclined to state that the Orbs are more a novelty item. The WBK38 wins by a fair margin (at 38°C when the CPU is idle).

GlobalWin is among the top of the cooling companies. They have created impressive CPU coolers in the past, and they continue to do so with the WBK38, and even more so, the WBK68. However, the WBK38 is considerably noisy. Replace it with a slower-rated fan, and you're set. That's what I have done.

Neoseeker heeft het Gigabyte GA7ZXR socket-A moederbord in revisie 2.1 onder handen genomen en er een review van gebakken. Het bord is gebaseerd op VIA's KT133A chipset en voorzien van een on-board Promise IDE-RAID controller. Daarnaast valt 't op doordat Gigabyte gebruik heeft gemaakt van een blauwe printplaat. De specificaties in 't kort:

Drie DIMM-bankjes voor maximaal 1,5GB SDR-DIMM
VIA KT133A chipset met 686B south-bridge

Een behoorlijk compleet bord dus, dat bovendien ook voorzien is van voldoende voorzieningen voor de overclocker. Deels moet 't overclocken nog gebeuren door middel van DIP-switches, maar er zijn ook een aantal zaken via het BIOS te regelen, zoals de FSB, die in stapjes van 1MHz kan worden ingesteld tussen 95 en 150MHz. De core-spanning en multiplier moeten helaas nog wèl via DIP-switches worden ingesteld. De lay-out is ook niet verkeerd: voldoende ruimte rond het processor-socket, dús kan er een flinke koeler geplaatst worden.

In de tests doet de Gigabyte het goed: stabiel, en met alleszins behoorlijke benchmarks. Al met al volgens de reviewer een moederbord waar èrg weinig op aan te merken is:

The Gigabyte 7ZX has seen its share of changes and Gigabyte has hit on a great combination of features and functionality with the GA-7ZXR rev 2.1. The only major improvement that could be made would be to migrate the rest of the overclocking settings into the BIOS.

The board has an excellent feature-set, is backed by a big name company, and most importantly, it looks damn cool :] . This mobo is an excellent choice any way you slice it. Kudos to Gigabyte for a board well done.

Patrick Schmid heeft zijn review van de Seagate Cheetah X15 online gemikt. Deze 18,4GB grote Ultra-160 SCSI schijf heeft 5 platters, een rotatiesnelheid van 15.000rpm, 4MB buffer en een erg snelle seek time van 3.9 ms. Vanwege z'n snelle rotatiesnelheid heeft-ie wel een kleinere data-dichtheid waardoor zijn maximale transfer speeds onder die van 10.000rpm schijven van Quantum en Fujitsu liggen. Heel erg groot is het verschil echter niet, en de Cheetah profiteert weer wel van een veel snellere mininum transer rate. Het gevolg waren erg snelle WinBench scores, en een zeer positieve conclusie:

Let's be honest: Did we expect these results? Basically, no. Most of us certainly expected a drive with transfer rates that could break all known records. Instead, we got a technically sophisticated drive with optimized overall performance.

There might be other drives that can beat the Cheetah X15 in terms of maximum data transfer rates, but hardly any drive will outperform this high-tech model in any real world benchmark - the Seagate dominated both the Business and the Highend Winbench, as well as the access time tests.

These benchmark results, in addition to the extremely high minimum transfer rate, make the drive perfectly suitable for all kinds of high-end applications. As an added plus, its makes only as much noise as typical 10,000 rpm models.

Volgens dit bericht van De Telegraaf's DigiLink heeft de OPTA voorlopige tarieven vastgesteld voor internetten via de telefoonlijn voor een vast bedrag. Het bedrijf WorldCom zal als eerste in ons land een hierop gebaseerde dienst aanbieden, die tot 1 juli 2001 wel alléén voor ISDN-lijnen geschikt is. Na die datum worden tevens de tarieven alweer herzien:

Er waren al aanbieders die consumenten internetten tegen een vaste prijs aanboden, maar die moesten met KPN zelf toch afrekenen per tik. Door intensief netgebruik van hun klanten liepen deze aanbieders een groot risico op kosten ver boven hun eigen tarief.

De nu vastgestelde tarieven liggen nog wel 20 procent hoger dan in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, maar ze worden per 1 juli alweer herzien op grond van nieuwe voorstellen van KPN.

Het Roemeense PCHardware heeft een review gemaakt van de MSI 694D Master-S, een dual-processor moederbord voor de Intel Pentium III. Het plankje is gebaseerd op VIA's 694DP chipset met de 686B south-bridge. Meest opvallende feature van dit bord is wel de aanwezigheid van een Adaptec AIC-7899 dual-channel U160 SCSI-controller. Om te beginnen maar even de specs in 't kort:

Al met al een lekker compleet bordje, dat geschikt is om een mooi workstation of een kleine server mee te bouwen. Bovendien ook een bord dat zich laat overclocken: de review wordt gedaan met twee Pentium III 800MHz CPU's die braaf en stabiel hun werk doen op 1064MHz. Een voordeel van de MSI is dat de core-spanning voor elke processor onafhankelijk te regelen is, een feature dat bijvoorbeeld de bekende Abit VP6 niet biedt. De MSI biedt daarentegen weer minder FSB-instellingen dan de Abit. Wie de lay-out van de MSI bekijkt ziet bovendien dat er behoorlijk veel ruimte rond de processor-sockets is, dus plaatsing van een paar flinke coolers is geen groot probleem, ook alweer een voordeel voor de tweaker.

De reviewer draait een flink aantal benchmarks, en geeft bovendien al die benchmarks voor zowel één processor als twee processoren - waarmee mooi aan 't licht komt wanneer een tweede processor ècht voordeel gaat opleveren. Daarnaast vergelijkt 'ie een groot deel van de benchmarks met die van een Abit VP6 in dezelfde configuratie, maar dan met een U100 harddisk. Geen wonder dus dat de MSI, in de tests uitgerust met een Quantum Atlas 10K U160 SCSI-disk, de Abit op alle fronten kan verslaan. Tenslotte draait de reviewer een aantal server-benchmarks onder Linux, voor de liefhebber dus ook zeker niet te versmaden! Al met al komt men tot de conclusie dat de MSI 694D Master S een goed en stabiel moederbord is:

News.com meldt dat Sun een bug heeft ontdekt in de hardware prefetch pipeline van de UltraSparc III processor. Volgens Sun kan de bug resulteren in mogelijke data corruptie bij het uitvoeren van floating-point instructies met een ingeschakelde prefetching pipeline. Het probleem doet zich voor bij een beperkt aantal van de tot nu toe verkochte Sun Blade 1000 workstations. Sun heeft inmiddels een patch uitgebracht waarmee het probleem wordt verholpen door het uitschakelen van de hardware prefetching functionaliteit. Dit heeft als bijkomstig gevolg een performance-daling van 15% in de SPECfp2000 benchmark. De na 13 maart geleverde Blade 1000 systemen zijn reeds voorzien van de patch. De bug heeft geen betrekking op de nieuwe Sun Fire servers die vorige maand werden gelanceerd:

The problem affects only initial models of the Sun Blade 1000 workstation, one of the first computers based on the critical new design from the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company, spokeswoman Kasey Holman said.

Though Sun is distributing a program that fixes the problem, the patch disables a feature of the chip and thus cuts computer performance under some circumstances, Holman said.

Leadtek, bekend van de videokaarten, heeft in een grijs verleden ook moederborden geproduceerd en is nu blijkbaar terug van vakantie. Om weer meteen goed binnen te komen worden een vijftal plankjes geïntroduceerd. Vier daarvan zijn Socket370 borden, zoals de WinFast 9500DDR met Apollo Pro266 chipset, de microATX versie daarvan en nog twee borden die op elkaar lijken; de WinFast 9200 en 9100AX, voorzien van respectievelijk de 815E en 815EP chipsets van Intel. De laatste daarvan heeft geen geïntegreerde videocore. Het enige Socket A bord in de serie is de WinFast 7300K7, uitgevoerd in het microATX formaat met SiS 730 chipset:

• WinFast 9500DDR. This ATX mainboard is based on VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset and supports Socket370/FC-PGA processors. There are 3 DIMM slots for up to 3GB PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM, 5 PCI and 1 AGP 4x slots. The mainboard supports ATA/100 (VT8233 South Bridge) and features V-Link bus between the chipset bridges. There are also AC’97 sound codec and ATA/100 RAID controller onboard. The mainboard allows changing processor Vcore and the FSB frequency in the interval between 66 and 250MHz with 1MHz increments.
• WinFast 9300DDR. This is a MicroATX version of the previous board. Unfortunately, we don’t know how many PCI and DIMM slots there will be (most probably there will be 3 PCI and 2 DIMM).
• WinFast 9200. This ATX board is built on Intel 815E chipset and supports Socket370/FC-PGA CPUs. It is equipped with 3 DIMM slots for the maximum of 512MB PC100/PC133 SDRAM. The board features an integrated graphics core, 6 PCI slots, 1 AGP 4x slot and 4 USB ports. Besides, it also has AC’97 codec and supports ATA/100. As for the overclocking friendly features, they are just the same as those of WinFast 9500DDR.
• WinFast 9100AX. This mainboard is very similar to the previous one but it is built on Intel 815EP chipset (Intel 815E without the integrated graphics core).
• WinFast 7300K7. This MicroATX mainboard is designed on SiS 730S chipset and supports Socket A processors. We don’t know exactly how many DIMM slots for PC100/PC133 SDRAM there will be (probably 2). As for the other expansion slots, there are 3 PCI and 1 AGP 4x, though there is also an integrated graphics core. The mainboard supports ATA/100. The options for CPU overclocking weren’t reported about.

In een press release heeft Hercules vorige week de Gamesurround Fortissimo II geluidskaart aangekondigd. Deze kaart is voorzien van een Cirrus SoundFusion CS4624 DSP met ondersteuning voor Sensaura technologie en is dus onder andere compatible met EAX en A3D. X-Bit Labs meldt dat ALi zeer binnenkort met een alternatief voor VIA's KT133A chipset komt. De M1649 is in feite niets meer of minder dan een MAGiK 1 met andere geheugencontroller, dus er is onder andere ondersteuning voor AGP4x, ATA/100 en 133MHz FSB aanwezig, alleen dan met SDRAM in plaats van het duurdere DDR geheugen. Moederbordmakers die al met de MAGiK 1 chipset hebben gewerkt zijn enthousiast; de kosten van de nieuwkomer zijn een stuk lager en het aanpassen van de layout is waarschijnlijk een kleine moeite. In het tweede kwartaal wordt de chipset aangekondigd en zal onder andere Iwill een moederbord introduceren dat er gebruik van maakt:

Iwill, for instance, is planning to announce a new mainboard aka KD266 based on this chipset. This ATX mainboard will have 3 168-pin DIMM slots for PC100/PC133 SDRAM, 1 AGP 4x slot and 6 PCI slots. Another mainboard manufacturer, which is already planning a product on ALi M1649, is Acorp. Their 7A1646A mainboard based on this chipset will also have 3 DIMM slots and 1 AGP 4x. There will be also 5 PCI slots and 1 AMR slot.

Micron heeft aangekondigd dat het vanwege de grote vraag van consumenten de productie van DDR SDRAM heeft opgeschroeft. Het bedrijf verwacht dat de groei de rest van 2001 zo doorgaat; tegen het einde van dit jaar zou bijna een derde van de totale productie uit DDR geheugen zal bestaan. Door grote hoeveelheden te maken zal de prijs snel zakken en volgens de marketing-mensen van Micron gaat DDR het dan ook helemaal maken in zo'n beetje elk marktsegment. Ondertussen kunnen geheugenbakkers als Samsung de RIMM's niet aangesleept krijgen:

"With customers in desktop and portable computing, server, graphics, networking and consumer segments choosing it for their products, DDR SDRAM appears to be the next high-volume architecture. Micron is a leader in DDR SDRAM adoption, and we also plan to take a leadership role in high-volume production of this cost-effective, high-performance solution."

De opschudding die eerder deze week ontstond over de gebruikersovereenkomst van Passport wordt niet genegeerd door Microsoft. Deze tekst bevat een aantal regels die het bedrijf het recht geven alle berichten die gebruikers versturen openbaar te maken, verkopen of veranderen. Een woordvoerder van het bedrijf meldde aan The Register dat deze tekst binnen 24 uur aangepast zal worden om de TRUSTe privacy policy van Microsoft te reflecteren. Daarnaast boodt hij zijn excuses aan voor de verwarring die is ontstaan. Zoals gewoonlijk ziet de site wel een aantal gaten in deze verklaring, maar het is in ieder geval geruststellend dat de gebruikers ook nog iets te vertellen hebben:

Pilla said the Terms were being revised to bring them up to date with Microsoft's TRUSTe privacy policy, claiming that the privacy policy "trumped" the Passport Terms. But that isn't actually the case, as the privacy policy covers data about you, not what you say. When pressed, Tom advised us to "ask TRUSTe".

And some websites are reciprocating Microsoft's Passport terms, by beginning to block Hotmail email too. Steve Litt of Troubleshooters.com revised his own terms to block Passport services. Moongroup simply blocks incoming postings from Hotmail, MSN, or Microsoft itself.

Pilla also denied that Passport subscribers were being told they couldn't unsubscribe from the network. That seems to be as legally unenforceable as the original Terms Of Use, but we'll return to that one.
