Na maanden vertraging heeft de Apache Group woensdag de eerste public beta van Apache 2.0 gereleased. De release vond plaats op de eerste dag van de ApacheCon conferentie in Santa Clara. Versie 2.0 van de Apache webserver is grotendeels herschreven om de prestaties en schaalbaarheid te verhogen en om Apache beter geschikt te maken voor gebruik op non-Unix besturingssystemen zoals Windows. Aanvankelijk hoopten de Apache developers dat Apache 2.0 tegen eind 2000 final zou zijn, maar dat streven is bij lange na niet gehaald. The Apache Group is proud to announce the release the sixteenth release of Apache 2.0. This is the first public beta of Apache 2.0. This release has been tested thoroughly, and has been running the apache.org web site for the last few weeks.

Apache 2.0 offers numerous enhancements, improvements and performance boosts over the 1.3 codebase. The most visible and noteworthy addition is the ability to run Apache in a hybrid thread/process mode on any platform that supports both threads and processes. This has shown to improve the scalability of the Apache HTTPD server significantly in our early testing, on some versions of Unix. Apache 2.0 also includes support for filtered I/O. This allows modules to modify the output of other modules before it is sent to the client. Finally, we have included support for IPv6 on any platform that supports IPv6.

This version of Apache is known to work on many versions of Unix, BeOS, OS/2, and Windows. Because of many of the advancements in Apache 2.0, the initial release of Apache is expected to perform equally well on all supported platforms.

Planet Multimedia meldt dat onderzoeksbureau Interview-NSS met zijn Europese Internet Barometer heeft berekend dat het percentage Nederlanders met een internet aansluiting is toegenomen tot 53 procent. Deze stijging van drie procent ten opzichte van de maand februari brengt Interview-NSS tot de conclusie dat het verzadigingspunt van het percentage online Nederlanders nog niet is bereikt. Eerdere onderzoeken lieten in de maand december een stagnerende groei zien. Trendbox meende daaruit af te leiden dat het aantal Nederlanders met toegang tot internet in de wintermaanden zou stabiliseren.

Volgens de Internet Barometer telt Nederland 6,6 miljoen internetters en staat het land in absolute aantallen op de zesde plaats van Europa. De penetratie graad is vergelijkbaar met Finland, Ierland, Noorwegen, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Zweden en Denemarken scoren het hoogst.

X-Bit Labs heeft wat meer info over de nieuwe Abit moederborden met VIA DDR chipsets. De VR6-RAID is een Socket370 moederbord met ondersteuning voor de Tualatin Pentium III processor. Hij is gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro 266T chipset en krijgt 3 DDR sloten, 6xPCI en 1xAGP.

De KR7-RAID wordt een VIA KT266 plankje en zal plaats kunnen bieden aan 4 DDR reepjes. Net als de VR6 is hij ook voorzien van een Highpoint HPT370 ATA-100/RAID controller. Beide moederborden zijn gepland voor het een release in het tweede kwartaal.

• VR6-RAID. ABIT plans to make this Socket370 mainboard compatible with Tualatin from the very beginning. That is why it will be based on the new VIA Apollo Pro266T chipset and will feature a voltage regulator compliant with VRM 8.5 specification. There will be 3 184-pin DIMM slots for DDR memory. Besides, there will be an AGP 4x slot and 6 PCI slots. The board will be equipped with an integrated ATA/100 RAID controller, AC’97 sound and will support SoftMenu III.
• KR7-RAID. This Socket A mainboard will be based on VIA KT266. It will have 4 DIMM slots, 1 AGP 4x slot and 6 PCI slots onboard. There will be also 6 USB ports and AC’97 sound. As usual, the board will feature an integrated ATA/100 RAID controller – HPT370. If you are an overclocking fan, then the board will let you change the processor clock multiplier, FSB frequency, Vcore and Vio.

Volgens deze informatie van X-Bit Labs hoeven we de komende tijd geen G800 van Matrox te verwachten. Wel zou de opvolger van de G400/G450 binnenkort verschijnen. Deze G550 zal gebruik maken van zaken als Matrox Skinning en Displacement Mapping en een aantal nieuwe Dual-Head features ondersteunen. Het ziet er dus duidelijk niet naar uit dat Matrox op korte termijn nog met een gamerskaart aan komt zetten.

"According to some official info from Matrox, the successor of G400/G450 will be called G550 and will come out a few weeks later after CeBIT show is over. Among the new features it will have we should mention only Matrox Skinning (which had been already shown at the last year’s GDC and Metldown), Displacement Mapping and a couple of new DualHead features. The company will not announce anything like G800 in the near future".

Bij HardOCP is een artikel neergeplant waarin wordt onderzocht hoe de GeForce3 het doet ten opzichte van zijn broertje, de GeForce2 Ultra. Om te onderzoeken hoe de kaarten ten opzichte van elkaar presteren werden 3DMark 2001, Aquanox en Dronez uit de kast getrokken. Twee DirectX benchmarks en één OpenGl benchmark die de mogelijkheden van de GeForce3 aardig kunnen benutten.

Zoals te verwachten is doet de Geforce3 het flink beter dan de GeForce2 Ultra in deze nieuwe generatie spellen/benchmarks. In 3DMark 2001 en Auqanox zijn de verschillen tussen de beide kaarten enkele tientallen procenten. In Dronez wordt de kracht van de GeForce3 pas echt duidelijk: 21 tegen 60FPS behoeft weinig toelichting.

Jammer is natuurlijk dat er voorlopig nog geen spellen op de markt komen die gebruik kunnen maken van al het lekkers wat mogelijk is met GeForce3. Dit doet de reviewer dan ook tot de volgende uitspraak komen:

If you don't want eye candy and more life-like graphics, then buying a GeForce3 should not even be thought about. It will only cause you pain and torment. "Pay my rent, or GeForce3? ARGH!!!!" I think, as you see above, there are many configurations of this particular game that can be handily played with a GeForce2 level card. Now of course you will be sacrificing all the goodies, but you will still be able to play. Will it be a game you would want to play without all of the frills? Who knows for sure, but I have a pretty good idea.

Still, it will be a while till we see a bevy of games on the market that will even come close to utilizing the full potential of the GeForce3. My take on the whole thing is that peak sales of GeForce3 chipset cards will not be realized till we see a DOOM3 box sitting on the retailers shelves. Then I think the GeForce3 will be in high demand. Maybe I am totally wrong on this, but by that time we should see some decreases in the pricing almost for sure and an affordable GeForce3 will certainly warm the heart of the buying public a bit more than the forecasted US$550 (give or take) pricing level we have seen. For those of you screaming that the price is an outrage, I also remember that it was not too long ago that I had a $600 set of 12Meg Voodoo 2s in my box. Even though the stair step in the buying process made it seem a little bit saner at the time. But gawd, how I loved them...

In een anti-trust zaak à la Microsoft is de Europese Commissie bezig met een onderzoek naar Intel's marketing strategieën. Het gaat vooral om de 'Intel Inside'-subsidies, waarbij geld wordt gegeven aan Intel-leveranciers en concurrenten benadeeld worden. Ook wordt het licentiesysteem aan de tand gevoeld. Volgens bronnen wordt essentiële informatie met betrekking tot bus-ontwerpen alleen verstrekt aan ontwikkelaars die uitsluitend met Intel samenwerken.

Als de commissie dit ook daadwerkelijk in een officiële aanklacht zal gaan omzetten, kan dat vervelende taferelen voor Intel opleveren. Het bedrijf vindt zelf echter volledig eerlijk en wettelijk te handelen:

The investigation by the European Commission is focused in part on possible exclusionary effects of Intel’s marketing efforts, including the “Intel Inside” marketing subsidies, lawyers close to the case said. These incentives are alleged to have been used to reward computer makers that use Intel chips exclusively, while punishing those companies building personal computers using competitors’ chips.

The investigation is examining Intel’s licensing of the design for the internal data pathway, or “bus,” of its chips, the lawyers close to the case said. Investigators also are weighing allegations from competitors that Intel strong-armed customers who bought rival computer chips; such customers were alleged to have been denied crucial design data, and their access to supplies of new Intel chips was limited.

Bij WebWereld is te lezen dat SuperWeb misschien een doorstart zal gaan maken. De voormalige flat-fee internetprovider ging failliet met een schuld van ruim 10 miljoen gulden, en is onder andere hierom niet van plan het nieuwe bedrijf op dezelfde manier op te zetten.

Eind april zal er beslist worden over het wel of niet opstarten van het nieuwe bedrijf. Hierbij zal het waarschijnlijk niet meer gaan om abonnement met een 0800-nummer, maar om ADSL-verbindingen via BabyXL. Over de nieuwe naam is ook nog geen zekerheid, maar gezien de slechte reputatie die SuperWeb heeft achtergelaten zal het verstandig zijn iets anders te kiezen:

Eier praat op dit moment met de curator van SuperWeb over een mogelijke doorstart. Eind april wordt de beslissing genomen of Superweb doorgaat of niet. Het 'nieuwe' Superweb zal zich waarschijnlijk gaan richten op het aanbieden van ADSL. Daartoe onderhandelt Eier op dit moment onder meer met BabyXL. Hij zal zelf voor de financiering zorgen. "Venture capitalists zijn op dit moment niet echt bereidwillig om geld te steken in een internetbedrijf."

Commissarissenkantoor KPMG is van plan een klacht in te gaan dienen tegen spraaktechnologiebedrijf Lernout & Hauspie. Al eerder werd dit bedrijf verdacht van valsheid in geschrifte, waarna de directie besloot KPMG in te huren om de zaak te onderzoeken. Echter, dit was geen slimme zet van L&H. In plaats van een positief rapport, resulteerde het onderzoek in nog negatievere berichten.

KPMG concludeerde dat het bestuur bewust onjuiste en onvolledige informatie had verstrekt, met het doel de aandelenkoers te laten stijgen. Hierom zal een klacht worden ingediend bij een onderzoeksrechter. Een Belgische krant verwacht dat dit als gevolg zal hebben, dat de afgelopen jaar overgenomen bedrijven Dragon Systems en Dictaphone weer opnieuw zullen proberen hun bedrijf terug te krijgen:

De rapporten tonen volgens KPMG aan dat deze mensen bewust onjuiste of onvolledige inlichtingen hebben verstrekt aan de commissaris. Het gaat bijvoorbeeld om het verborgen houden van "side agreements" (nevenverbintenissen in de marge van contracten). Volgens de verschillende rapporten kwam deze praktijk, waarbij klanten die licenties kochten op LHSP-technologie, de belofte kregen in bepaalde omstandigheden terugbetaald te worden, veel voor.

KPMG voert voorts aan dat LHSP bewust onjuiste informatie heeft verstrekt omtrent de beruchte LDC s (language development companies) én dat het voormalige management ook derden aanspoorde onjuiste verklaringen af te leggen aan de commissaris. Het doel van deze acties, wordt vermoed, was het kunstmatig opvijzelen van de omzet en aandelenkoers van LHSP.

Sinterklaas 82 tm wees ons op dit bericht van Hardwareinfo.net, waar men het heeft over problemen met de Soundblaster Live! Value en VIA's veel gebruikte 686B southbridge. Deze combinatie resulteert namelijk voor velen in spontane vastlopers, tenminste, als er grote bestanden van de ene naar de andere IDE bus verstuurd worden. Het probleem is bij beide partijen bekend, en gelukkig wordt er op dit moment naar een oplossing gezocht.

Via en Creative zijn samen druk bezig met het oplossen van de problemen tussen Creative's SoundBlaster Live! Value geluidskaart en de Via 686B southbridge chipset. De klacht zou zijn, dat mensen die deze 'vervloekte' combinatie gebruiken problemen hebben bij het kopieren van grote bestanden naar de andere IDE-bus. Dus het kopieren van bestanden van bijvoorbeeld de Primary Master naar de Secondary Slave gaat niet goed.

Het probleem is dus bij beide bedrijven bekend geworden, en samen met moederbordenfabrikant FIC wordt er gewerkt aan een oplossing. Op het Gamers.com - ViaHardware.com forum wordt iedereen dan ook opgeroepen om even van zich te laten horen, als er geen problemen optreden bij deze combinatie van hardware.

De mannen van GamePC hebben een review geschereven over de PC-70 Full Tower van Lian Li. Deze kast is volledig opgebouwd uit aluminium wat als gevolg een erg stijlvol uiterlijk met een flink prijskaartje is. Qua ruimte zit het wel goed met deze kast,zes 5.25” bays, drie externe 3,5” bays en zes interne 3,5” bays zal je niet snel gevuld krijgen.

Ruimte voor een goede koeling is er ook. Standaard worden er vier 80mm fans meegeleverd met ruimte voor nog eens twee 80mm fans. Ook leuk is dat er een soort van ingebouwde baybus achter de voorkant zit, daar zit een klein knopje waarmee je de voorste twee 80mm fans in de kast op drie verschillende snelheiden kan instellen.

Helemaal perfect is de kast echter niet. Zo is hij groter dan volgens de reviewer noodzakelijk is en daarnaast is het jammer dat de look van de kast verpest wordt door bijvoorbeeld CD-ROM spelers met een beige frontje. Afgezien daarvan is het een erg goede kast als je een flinke portemonnee bezit:

One other issue that will arise when using this case is the differences between drive bay colors and the rest of the case. While this isn't Lian Li's fault, most every CD-Rom/DVD/CD-RW/Floppy drive on the market is beige in color, which looks odd when used in an all aluminum case. While there are silver components out there to match this case, usually these are older components which don't meet the latest specs for high-end systems. It would be great if Lian Li (or any aluminum case maker) could make the aluminum panels flip down on the front of each drive bay to conceal the drives when not in use. That way, you wouldn't lose the cool aluminum effect, but still maintain full functionality. Hopefully one of these companies out there will take my idea and run with it.

Other than these little nitpicks, the PC-70 is an awesome case. Incredible amount of room for drives and large motherboards, plenty of cooling power, and it's much lighter than you'd expect it to be. This case takes everything that was great about the Lian Li PC-60 and expands on it. While it is incredibly expensive for a case, you get what you pay for, and there's not much more that can be added on to this case to make it better. Perhaps the next logical step for Lian Li is to make a WTX form factor case.

All in all, a great case, if you're willing to have a lighter wallet and sacrifice some desk space.

Het volk van Sharky Extreme heeft een review geschreven over Matrox' Marvel eTV kaart. Deze is bedoeld voor de beginnende videobewerker en heeft dan ook extra software, een TV-tuner en ViVo features die op de normale G450 ontbreken. De reviewer bekijkt niet alleen de meegeleverde software, maar ook de performance in een Quake3 en 3DMark 2000. De schrijver is erg tevreden over de kwaliteit en het gebruiksgemak van de kaart, die daardoor uitermate geschikt is voor hobbyisten. Hij moet echter wel waarschuwen dat de meegeleverde software niet alle professionele features heeft en dat je ook niet moet verwachten dat de nieuwste spellen er op draaien:

2D quality, as many would expect with a Matrox product, is exceptional. Typically, Matrox is considered to have some of the best 2D quality on the market, and the eTV is right in line. This is thanks, in part, to having a 360 MHz RAMDAC, as well as a generally high quality design both at the chip and board level. Even at 1600x1200, text still looked clean and crisp and there was no noticeable flicker.

[...] Bundled with the eTV are copies of Ulead's VideoStudio SE and Photo Explorer. VideoStudio is of particular interest as it allows for the editing of video clips. A lot of the software is more basic in design, targeting the home users that do casual editing of clips, such as family videos. The hardware certainly offers the capability of advanced video editing, but users will need to purchase a separate package for such.
