Naast Samsung heeft ook Elpida vandaag een licentie-overeenkomst getekend met Rambus zo bericht Electic Tech. Zoals bekend bezit (al dan niet rechtmatig) Rambus enkele patenten betrekkinghebbend op SDRAM technologie en nu gaat Elpida daar royalties voor betalen. Als een echte overwinning voor Rambus heeft dit echter niet gezien te worden, Elpida is namelijk een joint venture tussen NEC en Hitachi en deze bedrijven hadden al toegegeven aan Rambus:

Elpida Memory, Inc. is the name of the new joint DRAM memory venture formally announced by NEC and Hitachi on September 28th 2000. NEC and Hitachi established this joint venture company in December 1999 with the intention to bring their DRAM products together under a single brand and also to cooperate on the development and design of future DRAM products. According to IDC, Elpida will enter the DRAM market in January 2001 with 11.5% market share, and to grow to more than 20% market share by 2003.

Under the agreement Elpida can sell SDRAM and DDR SDRAM directly to their systems customers and ensure a seamless transition of DRAM sales from the NEC and Hitachi brands over to the Elpida brand. NEC and Hitachi, the parent companies, both retain their previously announced licenses with Rambus for both SDRAM and DDR SDRAM memory and Controllers that directly connect to them.

Under the licensing agreement, the royalty rates for DDR SDRAM are greater than the RDRAM compatible rates. The agreement also includes royalties for SDRAM as well as a license fee for the entire agreement.

Gamers Depot heeft vandaag de eerste review online gezet over de ProMedia 2.1 speakerset van Klipsch. Deze set is evenals hun alom geroemde V.2-400 speakerset THX gecertificeerd en is daarmee de eerste 2.1 THX speakerset voor de PC. Deze speakerset is niet simpelweg de V.2-400 minus twee speakers, maar bevat nieuw ontworpen satellietjes en subwoofer. Volgens Gamers Depot heeft dat zijn vruchten afgeworpen, en is de Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakerset de set die je in huis moet halen voor het ultieme geluid bij je PC. De prijs is met 200 dollar iets minder, maar zeker niet te hoog :

Jasper Schneider van VIAHardware.com heeft een review gepubliceerd van het MSI K7T Pro2 moedebord (ja, ik weet het, de tweede vandaag). Zoals je eerder al hebt kunnen lezen biedt dit Socket A moederbord boven zijn voorganger multiplier adjustment en de mogelijkheid om de Vcore aan te passen. Dankzij deze mogelijkheden werd een Duron 700MHz succesvol opgekrikt naar 1GHz:

I decided not to even test the front side bus adjustments, because frankly I have never had any luck over 105 FSB on the KT133 chipset. Multiplier adjustments is the way to go for overclocking if possible. The main reason is FSB overclocking puts too much stress on the other system components, whereas multiplier adjustments simply stress the CPU.

I was able to push a Duron 700 up to 1GHz at 1.8 voltage. 1050 would post, but failed during some testing.[break]Het bord bleef tijdens de testen stabiel en de prestaties waren goed. With motherboards shipping now with the 686b southbridge, it troubles me that this was not included. From what I know, the 686b adds no or very little more cost to MSI and eventually the end user. If this would have been included, the K7T Pro 2 would have been my top choice for a KT133 board.

Volgens The Register is het bericht van gisteren dat IBM de release van notebooks met Transmeta processoren uitstelt niet gebaseerd op de prestaties van de processor. Dat was wat analisten verwachtten na deze plotselinge wending. IBM zelf hield het op een 'niet passen binnen de marketingstrategie'. Volgens een 'bron dicht bij Transmeta' die The Register sprak was het Intel die IBM ertoe bracht om Transmeta te laten vallen:

The company - which you'll recall was recently entirely vindicated in an antitrust case - is claimed to have told Big Blouse that Intel CPUs and chipsets might be in desperately short supply. De FBI waarschuwt dat het bedrijfsleven en de regering in de VS op hun hoede moeten zijn voor cyberaanvallen uit het Midden-Oosten. Meerdere Israëlische en Palestijnse internetpagina's zijn slachtoffer geworden van DoS-aanvallen. De FBI verwacht dat deze 'cyberoorlog' overslaat naar het Amerikaanse deel van het internet. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel van WebWereld:

Volgens de gegevens van iDefense gaat de hackaanvallen op internet gelijk op met het geweld in de straat. Tot nu toe zouden in ieder geval 24 Israëlische en 15 Palestijnse het slachtoffer van een aanval zijn geworden.

[...] De door Palestijnen tot 'e-jihad' gedoopte cyberoorlog heeft nog geen enkele Amerikaanse website geraakt. Volgens de FBI is er ook geen directe aanwijzing dat dat wel zal gebeuren. Microsoft heeft samen met Sony, Philips en Compaq de Mount Rainier groep opgericht. Het doel van de groep is om een nieuwe open standaard op te stellen voor CD-RW, die ervoor zorgt dat gebruikers zonder speciale software hun CD-RW schijfjes als normale harde schijf kunnen gebruiken. De huidige PacketCD software die dat mogelijk maakt is volgens de groep te ingewikkeld, en de PacketCD schijfjes kunnen niet gelezen worden door computers die geen speciale driver hebben geinstalleerd.

Mount Rainier gebruikt het UDF filesystem, en heeft nog een aantal voordelen, zoals het afvangen van defecten, 2 kilobyte blocks en snel hardwarematig formateren van de schijfjes. Het eerste resultaat van Mount Rainier zal waarschijnlijk in Windows Whistler zitten, een screenshot van Build 2267 heeft dat min of meer verraden . Er komen ook programma's die het mogelijk maken om dezelfde techniek op niet-Mount Rainier operating systems te gebruiken:

Arnold van overklokken.nl trakteert ons op een review van de Thermaltake SuperOrb. De SuperOrb is met zijn 74 mm hoogte bijna dubbel zo groot als de Chrome Orb. De SuperOrb heeft 2 koelers binnen in het koelprofiel, waarvan de onderste 5500 rondjes per minuut maakt en de bovenste 5000. Arnold is tevreden over de prestaties van de SuperOrb, maar vond het geluidsniveau van de cooler aan de hoge kant:

De SuperOrb presteerd goed en wint het ook van de Spire. De enigste nadelen die ik bij deze koeler heb is dat hij toch wel aardig wat lawaai produceerd en er op sommige moederborden weer een paar condensatoren moeten worden verbogen. Maar met deze koeler wou de duron ook 1000MHz stabiel in windows draait iets wat me met de andere twee nog niet is gelukt. Deze koeler kan je dus net helpen om net nog wat meer uit je cpu te halen.

De mannen van GamePC hebben een review geschreven over het nieuwe blauwe monster van Hercules, de 3D Prophet II Ultra. De 3D Prophet II Ultra komt met in tegenstelling tot andere Ultra kaarten standaard met een TV-out en DVI connector, iets wat toch wel mag voor een prijs van 500 dollar. De kaart maakt zoals alle Prophet kaarten gebruik van een blauw stukje PCB en is zoals alle andere Ultra kaarten bloedsnel en duur. De voorspelbare conclusie van GamePC luid dat een Ultra kaart eigenlijk veel te duur is, maar als je persé het beste van het beste wilt hebben heb je met een 3D Prophet II Ultra de goede kaart te pakken:

We've all heard rumors of Nvidia's upcoming NV20 processor on the horizon, which we can all assume will be faster than the Ultra. While we don't have specific chip speeds or a date on when they'll be released, we are slowly getting the feeling that it's not far off.

Yes, it costs a lot. But hey, the memory is the fastest on the market (460 MHz DDR memory for god's sake!), and it's got a very highly clocked graphics core. Also, it's got TV and DVI out, if that wets your whistle. Still, the amound of money you can spend on a graphics card can basically buy you a budget AMD Duron/GeForce2 MX system for the same price.

Then again, if you want the fastest video card on the market, there's simply no other solution that comes close right now. Everyone knows that gamers will take hours of time to tweak a system to perfection, go to extreme measures to overclock a bit more, and will spend way too much cash in the process. Nothing else matters unless you can play Counterstrike at 120 FPS, and for folks like this, the GeForce2 Ultra is perfection right now.

Adaptec heeft enkele dagen geleden de AFC 9210LP aangekondigd, de eerste 2Gbit Fibre Channel adapter van Adaptec. De controller is backwards compatible met 1Gbit 'hardeschijven', en kan in full duplex mode 400MB per seconde verwerken. De controller beschikt over een 64-bit 66MHz PCI interface, en voor de hardeschijven is er een optische en koperen aansluiting aanwezig. De kaart zal volgende week gedemonstreerd worden bij een aantal OEM's en zal als alles volgens de planning verloopt in het begin van 2001 op de markt komen:

X-bit Labs heeft wat informatie online staan over Asus' Pentium 4 plankje, de P4T. Gebruik makend van de i850 chipset heeft het een ietwat ongebruikelijke plaatsing van de RIMM slots. Uitgerust met 5 PCI, AGP Pro, 4 USB, ATA-100 ondersteuning en maximaal 2GB RDRAM is dit voor degenen die van plan zijn een Pentium 4 te scoren zeker een interessant bordje, vooral omdat Asus ook aan de overclockers heeft gedacht:

WebWereld schrijft dat de concurrentie van Bertelsmann niet blij is met de beslissing van het bedrijf een aandeel in Napster te nemen. Vooral Universal wil Napster weg hebben en baalt behoorlijk van de nieuwe samenwerking:

De concurrentie van Bertelsmann voelt er nog weinig voor om het voorbeeld van het Duitse mediaconcern te volgen en ook met Napster om de tafel te gaan zitten.

In ieder geval Universal zou nog gewoon uit zijn op de sluiting van Napster. De muziekuitgever zal de rechtszaak tegen het bedrijf dan ook doorzetten. Andere grote platenmaatschappijen als EMI en Warner Music zijn minder fanatiek, maar willen eerst de kat uit de boom kijken. Een legale, geaccepteerde Napster zal nog wel een tijd op zich laten wachten.[break]Verder weet WebWereld ook nog te melden dat de hoogte van de lening die Bertelsmann aan Napster zal verlenen 50 miljoen dollar is. In ruil hiervoor krijgt het mediaconcern een 58%-belang in het file-sharing programma. CNet verwacht dat hier de oorzaak van de onvrede bij de concurrentie zit. Deze bedrijven zullen hierdoor namelijk moeten gaan samenwerken met een ander bedrijf dat een meerderheidsbelang in handen heeft:[/break]De hoogte van die lening is 50 miljoen dollar, zo meldt CNet op basis van bronnen. Belangrijker is dat, volgens CNet, Bertelsmann een belang van 58 procent zou krijgen in Napster. Als nieuwe investeerder zich aandienen, zou Bertelsmann in ieder geval een meerderheidsbelang van 51 procent willen houden.

Dat zou betekenen dat EMI, Warner, Sony en Universal moeten gaan samenwerken met een bedrijf dat in handen is van hun concurrent. Iets waar ze begrijpelijkerwijs niet veel voor voelen.

In de column wordt onder andere gebabbeld over waarom Intel nog steeds op het (zinkende?) Rambus schip zit. Volgens het publieke deel van het contract hoeft Intel maar één briefje te sturen naar Rambus, en ze zijn van Rambus verlost. Van Smith denkt dat de reden dat Intel dit niet doet misschien wel is dat ze de Rambus technologie ook willen gebruiken in komende server processors:

From reading through this contract, it appears that Intel might be incorporating Rambus technology into its internal caching schemes. Which processors this would impact is uncertain, but the contract wording suggests that Intel had the clear intention of building a special version of Rambus memory controller for integrated caches. It is possible that Intel's upcoming server processors have internal Rambus cache controllers. Voor een onbekende som geld heeft S3, vanaf 15 november SONICblue, het Britse Empeg gekocht. Dit meldt The Register. Empeg is gespecialiseerd in het maken van MP3-autoradio's gebaseerd op Linux (kijk o.a. hier voor meer info). Empeg maakt zeer veelbelovende producten, maar helaas hadden zij niet de benodigde cash om promotie-acties te financieren. Bovendien was de productiecapaciteit niet groot. Nu deze delen overgenomen worden door SONICblue, hopen de voormalige Empeg-werknemers meer tijd te kunnen spenderen aan het ontwerpen en perfectioneren van de Empeg autoradio's:

Hopefully, that's what SonicBlue will provide, along with expertise in mass-production. Empeg's product will be re-branded and sold under SB's Rio division. That will free the Empeg team to focus their efforts on product development - the fun stuff, on other words.

De overname is nog niet voltooid, maar volgens commercieel directeur Steve Sanders is dit binnen twee weken gebeurd.

Digit-Life heeft een review geschreven van de Voyetra Turtle Beach Santa Cruz geluidskaart. Deze kaart bezit onder andere een hoge kwaliteits 20-bit D/A-converter en de mogelijkheid om 6 kanalen uit te voeren. De geluidskwaliteit bij Dolby Digital 5.1-films leek de reviewer iets beter te zijn dan die van de SoundBlaster Live!, mede dankzij het gebruik van 6 speakers i.p.v. 4. Een professionele muzikant vond echter de muziek op de Live! beter klinken:

"In general, I liked Live! more. On the one hand it plays with more noise, but the sound is more natural. Santa Cruz plays clear, without audible noise, but lifeless, like a synthesizer. The timbre of the instruments seems unnatural. The sound is flat."[break]De conclusie is dan ook dat deze kaart een goede vervanging is voor een oud ISA- of goedkoop PCI-kaartje, maar als je een SB Live! of Vortex kaart hebt zul je geen beduidend betere geluidskwaliteit te horen krijgen:[/break]If you are looking for a new sound card instead of your old ISA, but Live! vs. Vortex2 doesn't suit you, or you want to organize some kind of home theatre, Santa Cruz will be a good choice. If you decide to replace a not bad PCI card (Live!, Vortex1/2, Yamaha 7x4) by Santa Cruz, don't expect the sound to be extraordinary and much better than you had before.

Those with $20 speakers won't just be able to define sound difference. So, Santa is not for you. And the same concerns those with $1000 speakers. So, the card will suit perfectly to those users who has speakers appr. at $100-500.

News.com schrijft dat Intel gisteren in een webcast bekend heeft gemaakt dat de Pentium 4 vanaf eind 2001 of begin 2002 de Pentium III voorbij gaat qua productievolumes. Dit is eerder dan aanvankelijk werd verwacht. Verder beloofde opperhoofd Craig Barrett onder het motto 'back to basics' dat er een eind komt aan de lange opeenvolging van blunders, product delays en bugs.

Hoewel Intel absoluut niet van plan is om marktaandeel af te staan aan AMD, wordt er voor volgend jaar een lage groei van 10% verwacht in de processor divisie, minder dan in het verleden. In de nieuwe business units zoals networking en communications wordt wel een sterke groei van 50% verwacht:

"Operational excellence is one of our two main priorities," said CEO Craig Barrett, addressing the company's plans to put an end to product missteps. "We are effectively getting back to basics."

[...] Price cuts and competition with AMD will be a constant. "Our goal is not to lose one point of market share," Otellini said.

[...] Intel also will streamline its product lines. Because of recent product cancellations, Otellini said, the company has "been able to narrow the overall number of products to ensure that what we do commit to can be delivered in volume."

Still, microprocessors will be the focal point of the company. The Pentium 4 will come out later this month and run at 1.4 GHz. By the third quarter, the Pentium 4 will run as fast as 2 GHz, Otellini said, confirming earlier analyst predictions.

Volgend jaar wil Intel in totaal 8 fabs geschikt maken voor 0,13micron productie. In de eerste helft van 2001 verschijnen de eerste 0,13micron processors. De eerste kandidaat die in aanmerking komt voor een die-shrink is de mobile PIII, eind 2001 gevolgd door de Pentium 4.

Bij Sharky Extreme hebben ze een guide geschreven over hardeschijven . De meeste woorden in het artikel worden gebruikt voor het uitleggen wat de verschillen tussen alle hardeschijf interfaces zijn, zoals IDE, SCSI, FireWire, USB en zelfs Fibre Channel komt aan bod. Waarom ze het laatste hebben gedaan is mij een raadsel aangezien dit soort hardeschijven zelfs niet in de meeste servers te vinden zijn, en zeker niet te koop zijn de gemiddelde computerzaak. Naast het verhaal over de verschillende interfaces wordt ook nog besproken wat alle termen uit de HD wereld betekenen en wordt het geheel afgesloten met een verhaaltje over welke hardeschijf geschikt is voor wie:

Fibre channel is an interface much different from SCSI or IDE. It more closely resembles switched Ethernet and InfiniBand in that it is not intended for just hooking hard drives and peripherals up to a system. It is also intended for networking, sharing hard drive resources, and other high-bandwidth operations. Fibre channel is often used to connect a SCSI RAID (or RAIDs as the case may be) to a network of workstations or servers.

Fibre channel currently runs with 100MBps of real-world bandwidth, with a theoretical speed limit of 1.06Gbps. A few companies are shipping 2.12Gbps products, supporting the next generation speed of Fibre channel. Some of the ultra-high-end Fibre channel solutions (even the lowest ones qualify as high-end) on the market actually use multiple Fibre channels at once to achieve more bandwidth.

Unlike SCSI, Fibre channel's wiring is quite flexible. Where SCSI is limited to up to 12 meters, Fibre channel be run up to ten kilometers with fiber optic cabling and lesser but still very long distances using less expensive copper cabling.

De mensen van Imaging Resource hebben de Canon PowerShot G1 eens grondig onder de loep genomen. Deze nieuwe digicam van Canon geniet nu al grote bekendheid vanwege zijn vele functies en toch compacte uiterlijk. In tegenstelling tot veel andere digicams is het mogelijk om handmatig de aperture-instellingen, white balance, ISO-gevoeligheid en meer te wijzigen. De G1 is gebaseerd op een 3.34Mpixel CCD en heeft dezelfde lens als de Sony DSC-S70, die Sony aanprijst als zijnde van Carl Zeiss. De lens kan 3X optisch inzoomen. Ander opvallend feit aan de camera is het draaibare LCD-scherm, dat eerder op de (dure en professionele) Canon PowerShot Pro70 was te vinden. Op deze manier kun je vanuit de vreemdste hoeken fotograferen, en bovendien is het LCD-scherm ook weg te klappen om het zo tegen vingerafdrukken en ander vuil te beschermen.

De kwaliteit van de foto's van de G1 werd ook door het zeer kritische Imaging Resource als zeer goed bevonden. Vooral in donkere situaties wist de G1 het uiterste uit de lens te halen:

The G1 performed very well in low-light tests, producing bright, useable images in 1/16 foot candle (0.67 lux) light readings. (That's really dark!) At these low levels, and with the resultant long exposure times, there is only moderate noise present in the images, most notably at the 200 and 400 ISO settings. The 50 and 100 ISO settings showed a very minor noise level. (We direct readers to Mike Chaney's excellent Qimage Pro program, for a tool with an amazing ability to remove image noise without significantly affecting detail.) Detail looks good in each of the low-light images, but color balance is slightly warm. To put the G1's low-light performance into perspective, an average city night scene, lit by modern street lamps, has a light level of about one foot candle. Bottom line, the G1 can probably see better in the dark than you can![break]De conclusie is dan ook zeer positief. De Taiwan Commercial Times meldt dat het rebelse VIA van plan is om in het eerste kwartaal van volgend jaar een chipset voor de Pentium 4 op de markt te brengen, ongeacht het antwoord op de vraag of Intel bereid is een officiële licentie te geven op het gebruik van de Pentium 4 bus. De Apollo PX266 DDR chipset vult volgens VIA woordvoerder Timothy Chen het gat dat Intel heeft opengelaten tussen de release van de Tehama Rambus chipset in november van dit jaar en de introductie van de Brookdale SDRAM chipset in het derde kwartaal van volgend jaar:

''It is our plan to make a DDR chipset for the Pentium 4,'' said Timothy Chen, a Via spokesman in California. ''I can't comment about the timeframe.''

[...] "Intel will have a big hole in their roadmap for the next six months,'' said Chen of Intel's Rambus chipset. ''Next year will be the most trying time for Intel.''

[...] Intel has licensed some chipset suppliers to provide products for the Pentium 4 that will go on the market during the fourth quarter of this year, Chief Executive Craig Barrett said in Taipei last week. He declined to say which chipset makers have been licensed. Via's Chen declined to comment on whether his company is one of the Intel licensees.

Epox heeft de specs gepost van hun nieuwe EP-8KTA3 moederplankje met de VIA KT133A chipset. De KT133A verschilt van de KT133 chipset door ondersteuning van de snelle 266MHz FSB die door de nieuwste Thunderbirds wordt gebruikt. Omdat er nog steeds gebruik wordt gemaakt van standaard SDRAM is de KT133A ideaal voor low-end systemen en voor tweakers die geen bakken met geld willen uitgeven aan nieuwe DDR reepjes.

Wat betreft specs steekt het EP-8KTA3 board prima in elkaar. Er zijn 6 PCI slots, 4 DIMM slots en een vergeten ISA slot. Verder heeft Epox een HighPoint HPT370 ATA100 RAID controller op het bord geprikt. De onplank P80P Debug LED moet helpen bij het opsporen van mobo troubles.

Een argument dat Napster gebruikte voor de rechter om Napster in de lucht te houden, is dat onbekende bands een kans hebben om te kunnen 'doorbreken'. Deze bands zijn op dit moment juist een nagel aan de doodskist van Napster. De bands gebruiken namelijk de namen van populaire bands om hun eigen muziek te verspreiden:

Een paar weken geleden was het raak bij Latin-zanger Ricky Martin. Fans die het nieuwe nummer She Bangs dachten te downloaden, kregen bij het beluisteren muziek te horen van een geheel onbekende band die zo meer bekendheid hoopt(e) te krijgen. Dat gebeurde ook, zo heeft de platenmaatschappij Sony niet zonder leedvermaak geconstateerd, ook al bij het nieuwe album van Fatboy Slim, dat op 6 november uitkomt. Via Napster zouden al twee nummers te horen zijn, Yo Mama en Weapon Of Choice. Maar het bleken nummers van onbekende bands te zijn.

Sony is blij met deze ontwikkeling. Hoe meer bands deze ontwikkeling gaan volgen, des te onaantrekkelijker wordt het om via Napster de muziek die je wil binnen te halen. Op dit moment is er nog niks aan de hand, omdat populaire nummers via duizenden computers aangeboden worden, zodat de kans om het nummer te downloaden wat je zoekt nog groot (genoeg) is. Zoals gebruikelijk heeft nV Italia net na het uitlekken van de nVidia Detonator Drivers alweer wat benchmarkresultaten voor ons klaarliggen. Hieruit is op te maken dat er toch weer een kleine snelheidswinst is behaald bij 3DMark 2000, hoewel de Quake3-demo een iets ander beeld geeft:

De Russen-met-de-verse-naam van X-bit Labs verblijden ons met een review van de Creative 3D Blaster Annihilator 2 Ultra. Zoals de naam al doet verwachten is deze kaart gebaseerd op nVidia's GeForce2 Ultra GPU, die, zoals bekend, een sneller geheugen aan boord heeft dan zijn kleine broertje. X-bit Labs rekent ons echter voor dat het geheugen nog lang niet snel genoeg is voor deze kaart:

The "effective" memory bus bandwidth (disregarding overdraw, z-buffer, etc.) at the resolution of 1024x768x32 equals: 1024*768*4(32bit)*115.6fps (taken from the diagram above)=346MB/sec. The memory bandwidth is the only thing that tells negatively on the graphics card performance. The chip fillrate cannot be a limiting factor because it makes only around 90Mpixels in this resolution (1024*768*115.6), which is quite far away from the announced fillrate of 1000Mpixels. Moreover, even at the higher resolution, take for instance 1600x1400x32 with the same 115.6fps, the chip fillrate will still remain out of the question: 1600*1200*115.6=220Mpixels. In our tests we got only 55.4fps. In other words, everything proves that only the graphics memory is too slow for such a fast chip.

And now let's try to find out which memory should we take for the system built with Pentium III 866MHz CPU, so that it didn't limit the system performance (provided we have 128fps at all resolutions).

The required "effective" bandwidth will make 1600*1200*4*128=938MB/sec. From a very simple proportion we may get the memory frequency: 460MHz*(938/346)=1247MHz. In other words, we need a twice as fast DDR SDRAM, which will hardly every be developed.

Natuurlijk presteerde de kaart zoals verwacht sneller dan alle anderen die nu op de markt zijn. Ook de conclusie van de review hebben we nu al vele malen gezien: de GeForce2 Ultra is nu eenmaal het snelste dat er op dit moment verkrijgbaar is, maar de kaart is dermate duur dat je je goed moet afvragen of het je dat waard is.

Digital Web 3D heeft een review in elkaar geknutseld van de MSI K7T Pro2. Dit Socket A-moederbordje gebaseerd op de VIA KT133 heeft als grootste verschil met zijn voorloper de mogelijkheid om de multiplier te wijzigen, een mogelijkheid die eigenlijk alleen bij Asus, Abit en QDI te vinden was. Verder is de Vcore te veranderen in de BIOS en loopt de FSB van 100 tot 166MHz in stapjes van 1MHz. Ook blijkt uit de benchmarks dat de K7T Pro2 iets sneller presteert dan zijn voorganger. Verder bleek het bord stabiel in alle testen. Volgens DW3D dus zeker een aanrader:

The board appeared to be 'rock solid' when it came to the stability test. Jammer genoeg worden er geen concrete overklokresultaten vermeld.

The Register meldde gisteren dat er problemen waren met de AMD 760 chipset waardoor een uitstel van tenminste twee weken noodzakelijk zou zijn. Een vertegenwoordiger van AMD heeft echter aan Tom's Hardware Guide laten weten dat hun kersverse chipset perfect in orde is, en zoals beloofd deze maand nog op de markt zal komen:

The web-based British IT journal, The Register, reported today that problems with the AMD760 chipset will cause delays in DDR SDRAM motherboard shipments based on this product. The chipset was launched Monday with system availability promised for this month.

However, in response to this article, AMD's Ward Tisdale told Tom's Hardware Guide that "there is nothing wrong with the 760 chipset." As for product availability he continued, "as we've said all along, it'll be available in systems like micronpc.com and NEC France in November and then widespread availability in Q1 of next year."

De ontwikkelingen in de halfgeleiderwereld gaan razendsnel, en NEC is de eerste die IC's gaat produceren met een gate-lengte van 0,095micron. Zij zijn daarmee de eersten die de magische barrière van 0,10micron weten te doorbreken. Het halfgeleiderproduct kan op kloksnelheden boven de 1GHz lopen en heeft daarbij slechts 0,9V aan spanning nodig. De chip is volgens NEC zeer geschikt voor gebruik in allerlei Internet- en breedbandtoepassingen.

Gisteren was het nog een gerucht, nu heeft S3 officieel in een persbericht bekend gemaakt dat de naam van het bedrijf vanaf 15 november verandert in SONICblue. Hiermee wordt ook het einde van S3 als maker van grafische chips voor de consumentenmarkt gemarkeerd, de bezigheid waarmee S3 jaren geleden haar bekendheid verwierf. Zoals bekend is de consumer graphics-divisie van S3 verkocht aan VIA. Het nieuwe SONICblue wil zich gaan specialiseren in informatietoepassingen en digitale media. Het bedrijf denkt duidelijk dat hier de toekomst ligt:

``The pervasive adoption of the Internet combined with the introduction of increased bandwidth to the home will enable new categories of Internet and Information Appliances,'' said Ken Potashner, the Company's CEO and Chairman. ``We intend to continue to be a leading supplier of many of the key building blocks of the digitally connected home. Bij Yahoo!Finance is een persbericht te vinden waarin te lezen is dat Samsung zwicht voor de druk van Rambus. Zoals bekend houdt Rambus een aantal patenten op het gebied van SDRAM-technologie, en proberen zij alle geheugenfabrikanten te laten betalen voor het gebruiken van die patenten. Vandaag hebben Rambus en Samsung een contract getekend waardoor Samsung heel wat royalties moet betalen, en Rambus er bepaald niet armer van wordt. Hiermee treedt Samsung in de voetsporen van NEC, Toshiba, Hitachi en Oki.

Under the licensing agreement, the royalty rates for DDR SDRAM and the controllers which directly interface with DDR SDRAM are greater than the RDRAM compatible rates. The agreement also includes royalties for SDRAM and for controllers that directly interface with SDRAM, as well as a license fee for the entire agreement.
