Why can't a PC do its job silently? The practical reasons for this are obvious: several active coolers (such as those on the processor, graphics card, chip set and power supply) make for a higher noise level on par with that found at a construction site. At the same time, there's a large amount of heat generated in the PC case, which, in turn, is dissipated with the help of additional fans on the chassis.

The two companies are duking it out this week in the U.S. District Court in Marshall, Texas, in a bench trial before Judge T. John Ward. Intergraph claims it invented the type of parallel computing used by Itanium in 1992. At the time, the company was still in the processor-design business and developed and patented a technology called PIC, or parallel instruction computing.
Intel explained that the delay was due to technical problems. However, board makers speculated that Intel is more likely trying to prolong the lifecycle of its 845G and 845E products with the new launch time. Meanwhile, market analysts said that the schedule change may also suggest that Intel indeed has certain worries about PC market business in the second half.
According to the chipset companies present schedules, related solutions are expected to come out after the fourth quarter. Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) is set to introduce its Serial ATA-supporting south bridge chip SiS964 in the fourth quarter, and VIA Technologies plans to incorporate the function into its VT8235 south bridge chip later. As for Intel, the chip giant will not integrate the Serial ATA specification into its new ICH5 south bridge chip until the first half of 2003 at the earliest.

"The audience that attends this show is very important to us," Houston explained, "we have some great products to show." He went on to add that Microsoft sees their particpation in this show as the first step towards forming an ongoing dialog with members of the Linux and Open Source community.
PGP's status as Open Source has sometimes been confused. "It wasn't actually Open Source," Zimmermann says. "It was published source code, for peer review. Open Source has to do with IP. Publishing source code for peer review has to do with transparency and making sure there are no back doors."
AltaVista also announced yesterday that it has increased the size of its index to 1.1 billion items. This is a little less than half the size of the leading search engines. Google claims 2.07 billion items, and Fast Search & Transfer ASA's AllTheWeb.com claims 2.09 billion pages. AltaVista says its multimedia index has 140 million images, videos and image files in it, compared to Google's 330 million images.

Computer Virus--the words alone provoke images of vanishing data, crashing PC's, and financial ruin. Emerging from obscurity 12 years ago to front page news, the computer virus has been portrayed in Hollywood as everything from a way to siphon off millions of dollars, to a secret weapon to bring down an alien enemy. The popular press has had its share of fun with Michelangelo, Melissa, and the Love Letter as well. While maybe not as dramatic as Hollywood portrayals or USA Today reports, viruses are a daily nuisance for both home and corporate computer users. With each new virus, a dozen antivirus vendors swing into action to find a cure. We spoke to product managers and researchers at Panda, McAfee, Symantec, and eSafe to get some insight into their work. In this two-part article, we'll explore a few of the techniques these vendors use to identify and detect viruses.
