Sander schrijft: "Een laboratorium in het Zweedse Linkoping is druk bezig met de ontwikkeling van een nieuw soort data-geheugen, gebaseerd op een dunne polymeerfilm. Het werk heeft de aandacht getrokken van processorfabrikant Intel, dat inmiddels een belang van 6 procent heeft genomen in het Zweedse bedrijf." Intel hoopt het geheugen te gaan gebruiken in allerlei mobiele apparaten. Het nieuwe flash-geheugen heeft een groot voordeel: het wordt niet steeds gewist als de spanning eraf gaat.

Een flash-geheugen is een semi-permanent halfgeleidergeheugen dat een beperkt aantal keren met een spanningstoot ('flash') te wissen en opnieuw te beschrijven is. De opgeslagen gegevens blijven bewaard tot de spanning wegvalt. Het voordeel van polymeerfilm is dat de data jarenlang intact blijven, zonder enige toevoer van elektriciteit.

Bij Super 7 vond ik een review van het Transcend TS-AVE3 moederbord, gebaseerd op de Via Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Het bord bleek vooral erg stabiel, maar niet erg succesvol bij overclocken:

The TS-AVE3 is without question as stable a mainboard as we have yet tested. We gave the system a good burn in running the Ziff-Davis Business Winstone 99 benchmark application in a continuous loop for 24hrs (rebooting after every 2nd iteration by batch file) and the board never failed. The TS-AVE3 performed like a champ with both exquisite stability and almost unbelievable consistency. As to overclocking; the Celeron easily took the 75MHz and 83MHz FSB settings, however the PIII 100MHz CPU could only handle the 103MHz setting as it failed to boot at 112MHz. The 133MHz CPU failed at all but its default setting. It is a bit of a shame that Transcend didn't include a way to boost the CPUs core voltages as the VIA Apollo Pro 133A has this feature built-in.

Peltier coolers, also known as thermoelectric coolers, are solid state heat pumps that, with the application of electrical current, transfer heat from one side of the device to the other. While the amount of heat reduction they can achieve varies with the quality of Peltier, a temperature differential between the two sides of 130°F (55°C) is not out of the question for a very high-end model. Less godlike models can produce about three quarters of that. This can mean some serious cooling for your CPU. Caesar, for example, saw a difference of a full 33ºC between conventional and Peltier cooling on the same system. Because the inside is air-tight, a non-functioning unit will produce conditions analogous to the inside of your mamma's El Camino with vinyl seats parked at the K-Mart in Phoenix on July 1st.

Op ParaKnowYa (wat? - een Duitse site in het Engels) vond ik een review van de Absolute Multimedia Outrageous GeForce DDR (zeg dat maar eens tien keer achter elkaar). Deze kaart staat vooral bekend om zijn lage prijs t.o.v. de andere GeForce DDR kaarten. Om de lage prijs laag te houden is bijvoorbeeld geen doos ontworpen:

Voor diegenen die het allemaal niet meer kunnen bijhouden, heb ik een erg handige 3D chipset roadmap gevonden bij 3DCenter.de.

DeuTeRiuM schrijft dat ze bij het Naval Research Laboratory bezig zijn met errug leuk soort geheugen, er moet 400 Gigabit per vierkante inch op kunnen en daarnaast moet de data er ook nog op blijven staan als er geen stroom op staat :

A radical new magnetic memory device that could eliminate the need for hard drives and provide "instant-on" capabilities for a variety of consumer products has moved closer to the production line.

A major advantage of the new technology is that the memory system is nonvolatile, which means it does not lose its contents when the power is turned off. Thus there is no need for a hard drive to "refresh" the cells in the memory device, eliminating the need to reboot a computer every time it is turned on.

The technology is purely electronic, thus eliminating the mechanical features that can lead to failures with hard drives. And the potential for memory storage is enormous.

"We anticipate we can put 400 gigabits in a square inch," said solid state physicist Gary Prinz of the Naval Research Laboratory, which has just contracted with a pioneering Minnesota firm to move the technology from the lab to the production line.

PC Insight verblijdt ons met een review van de trillende Logitech Wingman Formula Force stuurknuppel. De reviewer was erg te spreken over het ding en bekroond 'm met een 9/10. Hieronder een gedeelte:

My thoughts on the Wingman Formula Force are positive. It exhibits excellent control, a good amount of feedback and provides for a pretty realistic gaming experience. Unfortunately, I had to return this product back to the owner . Once you play your favourite racing simulator on the Formula Force, keyboards and mice will certainly be unattractive options afterwards. The only thing I would like to see in the unit is a gear shifter found in manual transmissions. Sure, alot of people do prefer the paddle shifting option as it allows for very easy access with your fingers, plus implementing a gear shifter would soon follow a request for a clutch as well. Leaving that aside, it would have be nice if Logitech had applied some realism to the existing pedal base. But trust me, once you start using the steering wheel, you will totally forget about any of these complaints! The first day I got the unit, I was stuck on the computer for 3 hours straight. A friend of mine stopped by and he took over for another 2 hours. That is how addicting this thing gets.

Bij de Tech-Review is een review te vinden van een gadget die we allemaal wel willen hebben; een draagbare MP3 speler met een erg relaxte opslagcapaciteit van bijna 5GB in de vorm van een 2.5 inch IBM harddisk, die op zijn beurt weer wordt aangedreven door een Motorola 56309 24-bit Digital Signal processor @ 33MHz. Tweakers zullen dus erg vrolijk worden van de gedachte om een dikke 80 uur muziek via je USB poort op het ding te persen. Het aanhangende prijskaartje is wel ietsie minder vrolijk: 1800 pieken ex. BTW en verzenden...

There's no doubt that the PJB-100 provides the largest amount of storage space available on any portable MP3 player currently on the market. Being able to store approximately 81 hours of music onto this small device makes it scream, "Order me!". There's no question of its ability to store and playback MP3s with high quality sound, but the price is what grabs you. For most people, spending $250 for a 64 MB MP3 player may be a stretch for their wallet, no doubt $750. However, if music is something you thoroughly enjoy, and having around 1200 songs on tap sounds absolutely perfect, then the price is justifiable. After all, the PJB offers a cost per megabyte of around $0.15, while other 64 MB players offer a cost per megabyte of $3.90.

Overall, if you have the cash, the PJB is definitely worth the money. It combines an excellent set of features, 4.86 GB of storage, and excellent sound quality all in an attractive design. A must have for the obsessed music listener.

The Register schrijft dat AMD wel eens het slachtoffer kan worden van zijn eigen snelle processoren. De Spitfire samples, bedoeld als budget versies van de Athlon, blijken zo goed te draaien, dat ze eigenlijk sneller zijn dan de gewone Athlons. Om dit probleem een beetje te vergemakkelijken stelt AMD de release van de Spitfire iets uit en schuift het die van de Thunderbird vooruit, zodat wanneer beide processoren tegelijk uitkomen, het niet zo is dat de goedkopere sneller is dan de duurdere processor.

However, the same sources tell The Register that the line is performing so well in its sampling that they are actually, in many cases, outperforming their elder brothers, the existing Athlon range of microprocessors.

Spitfires also have on-die cache, and although AMD is keeping details close to its corporate chest, the amount of cache will be less than Thunderbirds.

The speed that Spitfires are performing means their release, slated for mid- to late-May, will be delayed for a while, probably just a few days, the same sources said.

AMD is now likely to release its Thunderbirds -- Athlons with larger integrated caches -- at the same time. That will help avoid the possible embarrassment of junior doing better than senior.

Volgens The Register moet Microsoft binnenkort de source code van IE5 openbaar maken van het Amerikaanse DoJ. Zo moeten andere bedrijven de code kunnen aanpassen, zonder dat ze daar iets voor hoeven te betalen.

3DLabs heeft bekend gemaakt dat het Intense3D overneemt van workstation fabrikant Intergraph. Intense3D ontwikkelt professionele 3D graphics processors voor het super high-end segment. 3DLabs doet op dit moment ongeveer hetzelfde, alleen zitten zij iets 'lager':

Johan De Gelas van Ace's Hardware heeft een roundup online gemieterd van 4 rappe videokaartjes, te weten de SUMA GeForce DDR kaart met 64MB, Creative Labs Annihilator Pro DDR, de ATi Rage Fury Maxx en de Savage 2000. De 64MB GeForce profiteert natuurlijk het meest indien er op hoge resoluties met vele hoeveelheden textures gedraaid wordt. De ATi kaart moet het vooral hebben van zijn uitstekende Direct3D performance. Savage 2000 gebruikers wachten nog steeds op normale drivers...

AGP texturing is simply not up to the job, and developers will always try to make sure that there textures fit in the amount of video RAM that is typical at the moment the game launches. If developers give you the option to use large textures, like Epic does in Unreal, you are much better off with a card with huge amounts of video RAM than to invest in a new motherboard that has AGP 4x, or even if it would be possible AGP x8.

So which is the fastest card on earth ? That is a though question. The SUMA Geforce 64 MB DDR surely is the overall winner. With enough CPU power (Athlon 800, PIII 800 and higher), is the ATI Rage Fury Maxx a tougher competitor for the Geforce DDR's than most people think. While the OpenGL drivers still need a lot of work, the DirectX performance of this card is simply lightning fast. So fast that only the SUMA with its huge amount of RAM can keep the ATI rage maxx from taking the DirectX crown.

So which one offers the best bang for buck? The ATI Rage Fury Maxx offers a lot of DirectX performance for +/- $210, while we wait saying anything about the Savage 2000 until the promised drivers (better DirectX drivers without T&L and OpenGL drivers with T&L) arrive. If S3 can deliver in time, the $130 costing Savage 2000 might be difficult to beat.

Bij 3D GameForce is een preview te vinden van de komende 3dfx voodoo 4/5. Er wordt wat gezegd over de PCI-versies, die volgens 3D GameForce erg nutteloos zijn:

3dfx opted to set the PCI model with only 32MB of memory, only one-fourth the capacity of the VSA-100, while the AGP model does feature 64MB RAM.
Although the Voodoo 4/5 line will include two PCI products, at least a Pentium 200 MMX is required. In my mind, this almost eliminates the usefulness of PCI products because Pentium systems are practically the only widely used systems without AGP slots at this point -- leaving only Pentium 200 MMX and 233 MMX computers to market towards. There were early Pentium II motherboards that lacked an AGP slot, but only a select few were sold.

AMD opperhoofd Jerry Sanders heeft op een pers conferentie in Japan bekend gemaakt dat het marktaandeel van AMD op de Japanse markt is gestegen naar 24%. Japan loopt hiermee voorop in vergelijking met de rest van de wereld, waar AMD het momenteel met een kleiner aandeel moet stellen. Van de complete wereldproduktie van x86 processors denkt AMD dit jaar 16% in handen te kunnen krijgen, een stijging van 3% ten opzichte van 1999:

Nine out of the top 10 PC manufacturers serving the Japanese market now produce machines equipped with AMD processors. According to AMD's own figures, the company's share of the overall Japanese market for x86-based PCs has now reached 24 percent, with AMD processors being used in 35.3 percent of desktop machines and 17 percent of notebook PCs sold in the retail sector.

That for notebook PCs, registered this February, shows a six-fold increase from the previous figure of 2.7 percent in July last year.

In 1999, 140 million PCs with x86 processors were sold worldwide, and AMD was responsible for producing 18 million, or 13 percent, of those chips. This year, out of an expected 160 million x86 PCs to be sold around the world, AMD will likely supply 25 million of them with its processors, giving the company a market share of around 16 percent.

The fact that AMD has already captured 24 percent of the Japanese market shows that the company's x86 processors are being adopted more readily here than in other regions.

[...] Until now, AMD has been employing a strategy of offering same-performance x86 processors at a 25 percent price discount when compared with the chips made by its competitors. However, that strategy is currently being altered so that, in addition to "same-performance-but-cheaper" chips, the company will also compete with "same-price-but-superior-performance" (i.e. faster clock speed) processors. Shipments of high-speed (900MHz, 950MHz and 1GHz) versions of the AMD Athlon chip, AMD's newest x86 processor, are to be raised to several hundred thousand units during the second quarter.

Bij The Register kwam ik een interessant feitje tegen. Er wordt eerst verteld dat Via S3 koopt, wat wij al lang wisten. Daarna komt er een kleine alinea achteraan:

Interestingly, Via is about to lose its authorisation to use Intel Slot 1 intellectual property, but that by buying S3's chip business, which is also authorised to use Slot 1, it will ensure it can continue to support the Intel technology.

Ah, daar komt de chimpansee uit de broek! Een goede reden voor Via om S3 over te nemen, lijkt mij...

Op ZDNet wordt geschreven dat de volgende versie van Intel CDSA, de veelgebruikte beveiligingssoftware van Intel, open-source zal zijn. Deze 3e versie moet 15 mei uitkomen.

The move, however, comes at a time when hardware vendors IBM, Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) and now Intel are jockeying for position to win most favorable status with the open-source community. The move to open-source CDSA, Intel hopes, will gain it favor for its willingness to be part of the open-source community.

Het lijkt er dus op dat Intel dit vooral doet om hun imago weer wat op te vijzelen.

Ze schieten als paddestoelen uit de grond, die Via moederborden round-ups. Nadat net al gepost is dat Tom's Hardware 21 moederborden met Via chipsets heeft bekeken, doet DW3D nu hetzelfde met 8 van die plankjes. Als beste kwam de Abit VA6 uit de test:

When I hear the name ABIT, one of the things that comes to mind is oveclocking. This is true for many people. ABIT has been offering its quality motherboards with that particular option in mind, and was one of the first companies to implement Jumperless settings for your CPU.
VA6 is based on Apollo Pro133 chipset and uses VT82C686A chip as a South Bridge Controller. As many of you know by now, 686A is a well packed chip that helps motherboard manufacturers to save on production costs as well as valuable space on the board. It impliments some key features like built-in voltage, temperature and fan speed monitor as well as Integrated ISA Bus Controllers and 4 USB ports.
Even though there have been earlier reports about VA6 being not stable, it turned out to be a very reliable motherboard. VA6 passed through all of the test and even showed itself as a pretty fast and stable motherboard with a very good patentials for overclocking.

Zoals je zaterdag eerder hebt kunnen lezen is kabelinternet provider Sonera slachtoffer geworden van een grote hack, waarbij vertrouwelijke gegevens van het bedrijf en de abonnees zijn weggegapt. Middels een sniffer werden duizenden logins en passwords uit het internetverkeer van Sonera gebruikers gevist. Webwereld schrijft dat hierbij gebruik werd gemaakt van de 'Zer0day' exploit:

Volgens Gerrie Mansur, beveiligingsexpert van Hit2000, gebruikt Sonera op haar systemen de besturingssystemen Linux, AIX en Solaris. De internetaanbieder zou al ruim twee maanden op de hoogte zijn van het veiligheidsgat. Met die kennis is niets gedaan, zegt Mansur.

It looks like the new Celerons hit the mark on price and overclockability, but performance doesn't match the P3's. Then again, you might be able to use brute speed to make up for the performance inequality, but the P3s will only become more attractive as they fall in price.

Via The Register kwam ik bij deze i815 plank van de wazige fabrikant / stikkertjes plakker 'DCS Multimedia'. Het bord zelf is tamelijk klote qua layout (2xPCI, 1xARM - heb je niets aan), maar het is wel de eerste keer dat een i815 bord in het openbaar is gesignaleerd. Voor zover ik begrepen heb zitten die dingen nog steeds onder NDA tot mei/juni. We hebben zelf al zo'n bord op de CeBIT mogen zien en als Intel geen blunders maakt dan zou dit wel eens de 'verlossing' kunnen zijn voor PIII bezitters. Feitelijk is het een mix van de i810 en i820 chipset met ATA100 en native SDRAM support:

LostCircuits heeft een uitgebreide review gepost van het nieuwe Asus K7V KX133 mobo met 5xPCI, 1xAMR, 3xDIMM en 1x AGP Pro. Het bordje bleek (slechts) tot 112MHz bussnelheid stabiel te kunnen draaien. Hier een hap uit de conclusie:

Compared to the K7M, ASUS has learned from some of the mistakes. The conflict between the ATX power connector and the requirement for cooling has been resolved by moving the connector block as far away as possible. All in all, the K7V is an excellent board with enough room to play around in the BIOS settings and excellent expandability. The worst aspects of the K7V in its present form are the BIOS layout and the presence of the AMR slot. An old fashioned ISA slot would offer quite a bit more, particularly in the domain of sound or modem, particularly in view of the fact that the story about ISA causing an overall performance hit turns more and more into what it really is: an unsubstantiated hype bare of any real world basis.

All in all, so far the K7V appears to be the best SlotA mainboard currently available. Where others give golden awards, we feel that this simple statement issued by LostCircuits suffices.

When a movie came on that took advantage of the full capacity of Dolby Digital Audio, I was in shock at how amazing it sounded. Being accustomed to listening to Dolby Pro Logic over broadcast TV, I was in sheer heaven comparing how much more real the experience was.

[...] With an average price of $299, the WinTV-D may seem a bit out of reach for some, but you get what you pay for. The DTV capabilities are a very nice feature to have since in a few years, DTV is going to go truly mainstream. This is the only TV tuner card currently on the market that can be considered "future proof."

The WinTV-D is an investment that will get years of use. It supports full multitasking with CPU usage well under 10 percent. When faced with the decision of getting one of those "all in one" video cards, a seperate capture card is preffered as to not limit updgradability.
