CNET bericht dat Sony en BMG ook via het Internet muziek gaan verkopen. De platenlabels vragen zich nog af of dat MP3 moet gaan: ze zijn namelijk erg bang dat mensen deze kopiëren (ooohhhh...).

Sony verwacht dat het eind deze maand al zo ver is, BMG denkt dat het eens in de volgende maanden gebeurt.

Op CNET.com wordt geschreven dat het extreem arm pacifisch eilandje Tuvalu haar top-level domain ".tv" heeft verkocht aan DotTV. Het eiland ontvangt hiervoor de komende 10 jaar zo'n $50.000.000. DotTV denkt dat zij veel geld kunnen verdienen aan de .tv adressen. Kennelijk kunnen ze er heel wat verkopen:

"It's the most recognizable two-letter symbol on the planet," DotTV chief Lou Kerner said. "When you marry 'dot' with 'TV,' you become something very meaningful on the Internet."

In a test earlier this week, Kerner said, he sold 200 Internet names ending in ".tv" for about $300,000.

Bij wired.com lees ik dat in navolging van enkele universiteiten, ook een Amerikaanse kabelinternetprovider haar klanten een emailtje heeft gestuurd met daarin het advies om Napster te verwijderen van hun computer. Doen ze dat niet, dan wordt hun account binnen 72 uur afgesloten. De naam van de kabelprovider: @Home. Oh o... Dit was te lezen in hun email:

"You are running Napster and may be running other server software. This email serves as a 72-hour notice to reduce account activity to compliant usage levels and to remove any servers." The email was sent April 4.

Blijf hopen dat de Nederlandse kabelaars niet hetzelfde lot te wachten staat...

Op deze lege zondagmiddag verblijdt TweakMax ons met een artikeltje over het overclocken van een P3 600E op een AOpen AX6BC Pro Gold moederbord. Omdat dit figuur al verwachte dat hij minimaal 800MHz zou halen, is hij maar gelijk op die snelheid begonnen. Ietsje hoger lukte ook nog: uiteindelijk kwam hij uit op 828 MHz (138 MHz FSB) met de default Vcore setting (1.65 V). Eerder rapporteerde Tresh's Firing Squad dat zij op een BX-moederbord niet verder kwamen dan 124MHz FSB. Thumbs up, TweakMax! Al weer een goed resultaat voor een BX-bord, dus. Vandaag kwam bij iXBT de BX-chipset op 133MHz ook al als beste uit de bus.

Coppermines are damn fun to overclock even if you have a pretty outdated BX motherboard. The only bad thing is that you have to keep a lot of things in mind and maybe even swap some components to make it all the way. This is the main reason to why you always must be a step ahead when you're buying your computer components. Even though you might not need PC133 memory modules at the time when you're buying them, you will for sure have use of them later. You can't have enough speed and of course I'm considering getting a brand new video card since the boost of the 3D Graphics compared with my old system wasn't really fantastic.

In navolging van Anand heeft ook Tresh's FiringSquad nu een Asus K7V te pakken gekregen. En alsof dat niet genoeg moeite was, hebben ze er ook nog een review bij gemaakt. Er waren hoge verwachtingen voor dit moederbord, maar ondanks de aanwezigheid van vele bus speed settings in het bios bleek het overclocken toch niet zo goed te gaan als men had gehoopt.

The K7V comes with a wide range of features of benefit to the hardcore overclocker. For instance, the K7V supports a wide range of bus speeds in BIOS: 90, 92, 95, 97, 100, 101, 103, 105, 107, 110, 112, 115, 117, 120, 122, 124, 127, 130, 133, 136, 140, 145, 150, and 155MHz. As an added backup, the K7V comes with DIP switches which can also be used to manipulate bus speeds, although this solution doesn't support as many bus speeds as the system BIOS.

As you probably know, there isn't much headroom in the Athlons EV6 bus when it comes to overclocking. The highest setting we could achieve with our Athlon 750 and the K7V was 105MHz, and even then we were unable to complete a few benchmark tests. (CPU voltage was 1.75V) At 107MHz we were able to run a few tests in Quake 3, but this setting wasn't stable enough to complete the entire suite of tests.

TargetPC brengt ons een aardige vergelijking tussen twee soorten SDRAM: PC133 CAS3 en PC100 CAS2 (CAS, column address strobe, geeft aan in hoeveel cycles het geheugen tijdelijke informatie kan verwerken). De twee dimmetjes zijn van hetzelfde merk. Tot een FSB van 123 MHz bleek het PC100 CAS2 geheugen beter te presteren, daarboven presteerden beiden gelijk. Het PC100 geheugen ging trouwens goed tot 137 MHz, behoorlijk hoog voor deze specificatie. Hier een stukje over de performance boost bij CAS2:

And one of the slides claims that IA-64 architecture will survive for an amazing 25 years. But it also reveals details about McKinley, which will use the 870 chipset, support up to eight processors, have hot plug CPU nodes, a higher bus bandwidth, use Infiniband as well as PC-XI, give legacy IO support and support a number of other models including ACPI, SMBus, IPMI, memory chipkill, and fail over through multi pathing.

Active Hardware heeft een review gepost van de GeForce kaart van Gigabyte, de GA-GF2560. Eerder hoorden wij op Sharky Extreme dat hun exemplaar tot 155/205MHz overklokbaar was, Active Hardware kreeg hun kaart niet hoger dan 150/180MHz. Uit de tests bleek verder dat de kaart weinig voordeel had van deze iets hogere clock, iets dat we al vaker hebben gezien bij de GeForces.

Bunny's Workshop heeft een Asus K7V overgeklokt naar 133MHz bus met een Athlon 800 op 1066MHz. Da's niet verkeerd aangezien de meeste EV6 borden niet verder dan ~110-115MHz gaan (thanks Sake voor de tip):

I introduced K7V of ASUS. However, setting 110MHz was NG in BIOS. Next, FSB was able to be set with DipSW, and have done the start confirmation with FSB133MHz(PCI44MHz). However, FastTrak66 put out the error. Next, FireballCR6.4GB was used, and Windows98 started in FSB133MHz. The clock of DRAM is 2-2-2. FSB which it is synchronous Indeed 4:3 does not POST.

Bij iXBT hebben ze een round-up in elkaar geknutseld van de verschillende chipsets voor de Pentium III, de 440BX, de i820 en de VIA Apollo Pro133A:

So, we can conclude that today there are only two modern chipsets, which have every chance to survive with their price-to-performance ratio. The first one is a tidbit for overclockers - i440BX, which manufacturing Intel is officially ceasing. And the second one is VIA Apollo Pro133A, which officially supports 133MHz bus, AGP 4x and UltraDMA/66.

However, in the near future another couple of chipsets will join the battle. The candidate No 1 for the leading position is Intel Solano (i815) due in May, which represents a modernized i810E with an integrated graphics core, external AGP 4x slot and PC133 SDRAM support. But VIA isn't going to keep hands in pockets all this time. They are getting ready to introduce their own alternative to i815. It will be PM133 with the integrated graphics core based on S3 Savage4. But the major event in the chipset market in Q2 will be the launching of VIA Apollo Pro266, the first mainstream chipset supporting DDR SDRAM.

Het blijkt dat de 440BX chipset met een fsb van 133 mhz het beste is, de chipset is dan sneller dan de VIA Apollo Pro133A en zelfs sneller dan de i820 met RDRAM!

Naast Absolute Multimedia, Asus en S/U/M/A systems komt ook Leadtek met een los verkrijgbare 64 MB GeForce op de markt. Wanneer we dit kaartje in de winkel kunnen zien is niet bekend (als we hem al in Nederland te zien krijgen):

The Register meldt dat er volgens Dell geen deal met AMD is, iets wat AMD woensdag al bekend maakte nadat Forbes maandag speculeerde dat Dell en AMD aan het onderhandelen waren:

Fevered speculation that Dell, a major distributor of Intel technology, might be the last domino to fall to AMD with its Athlon microprocessor, was dampened down by an executive at the PC firm late yesterday.

Kevin Rollins, a vice chairman at the Dull Corporation, told the Reuters wire that the reports were not true. He confirmed that Dell regularly met with officials from AMD, as reported here previously, but said the meetings were just that, meetings.

An insider at AMD confirmed this was the state of affairs to us earlier this week, rather cynically observing that Dell liked Intel to see the name of the rival company in its visitor book, just to keep Chipzilla on its toes.
