AMD heeft een nieuw patent geregistreerd met de titel "Prefetching data using profile of cache misses from earlier code executions. Afgaande op onderstaande omschrijving lijkt het erop dat AMD een methode heeft uitgedokterd waarmee cache-misses verlaagd kunnen worden:

During execution of a code sequence, a profile is generated containing addresses of the data cache misses experienced during the execution. The profile is associated with the code sequence such that, during a future execution of the code sequence, the profile is available. Prefetching may be performed, based on the profile. Since the profile records a sequence of miss addresses, an arbitrarily complex miss pattern can be prefetched. In one embodiment, multiple profiles may be associated with a code sequence having multiple entry points (e.g. multiple instructions at which execution may begin within the code sequence). When the code sequence is executed, the profile associated with the entry point of the current execution may be selected. Additionally, a new profile may be generated. If the entry point of the current execution is not associated with a profile, the new profile is saved. If the entry point of the current execution is associated with a profile, the new profile is saved if the current profile is found to be ineffective.

MacCentral meldt dat het juni nummer van 'MacTech Magazine' geleverd zal worden met een gratis kopie van de PowerPC Linux distributie van SuSE. Momenteel verkeerd SuSE Linux voor PowerPC nog in beta stadium:

SuSE Linux AG and MacTech Magazine have announced that a free distribution CD of the soon-to-be-released SuSE Linux for the Power Mac will be included in the June 2000 issue of "MacTech Magazine."

This CD will be a fully working distribution of Linux on the 2.2.14 kernel, with SuSE's installation tool, as well as other open-source software. The CD does not expire and can be distributed freely.

Anandtech heeft voor ons een review gemaakt van de Cambridge SoundWorks Digital 2.1 Speakers, toch een leuk setje voor tweakers die niet te veel willen uitgeven of gewoon niet weten waar ze de speakers van een 5.1 setje moeten laten :

Bij Ace's Hardware is wat meer info te vinden over de AMD Spitfire en Thunderbird processors. Het goede nieuws is dat de Spitfire op de Windows Hardware Engineering Conference eind deze maand zal worden geïntroduceerd, waarna deze begin mei verkrijgbaar zal zijn. De CPU zal in totaal 192kB on-die cache krijgen, waarvan 128kB L1 en 64kB L2. Het slechte nieuws is dat er helaas geen mogelijkheid zal zijn om door middel van Slotkets de Spitfire op je Slot-A plank te prikken. Daar zul je dus helaas een Socket-A moederbord voor moeten regelen.

Heise.de weet ons te vertellen dat AMD de 1GHz Slot-A Thunderbird (het grote broertje van de Spitfire met 256kB on-die L2 cache en koperen interconnects) in juni in Dresden in massaproductie zal gaan. De eerste Thunderbirds zullen volgens geruchten echter al eind mei leverbaar worden in zowel Socket-A als Slot-A versies.

The one potential issue for the new Thunderbird chip may be in getting the PC infrastructure players lined up behind the chip at launch. Thunderbird, and a forthcoming value chip from AMD -- code-named Spitfire -- will both use a new packaging called Socket A, although Thunderbird will also be available in AMD's current Slot A packaging. There may be some initial shortages of socketed motherboards, according to industry experts, including Feibus.

Rallying the infrastructure players, who include motherboard and chipset makers, can be difficult. However, getting them behind Thunderbird and Spitfire is "a much smaller challenge than the original (Athlon) infrastructure was to set up last fall," Feibus said. "At this point, it's a coordination of people that are bought in."

The WindowsMe demo doesn't of course automatically mean that the product's ready to ship, but although Microsoft is adept at demonstrating wobbly products (it's not always so good at editing videotape), ActiveWin reports that it hit beta 3 yesterday. This ought to leave plenty time to get the software to gold code by the middle of the year, and into the shops around August.

Despite the ambitious noises that initially came out of Microsoft on the subject, WindowsMe is now effectively Windows 98 revision three, another service pack with knobs on. The knobs this time include universal plug and play, digital photo and music support, improved home networking (but not, ahem, Windows 2000 networking), and the ability to restore crashed machines to previous states.

Curiously, Microsoft group product manager Shawn Sanford has been telling today's WSJ that WindowsMe will probably cost around $89 at retail, and he even seems almost to accept that the name is, er, crud. Microsoft doesn't usually talk price this early in the game, but maybe the company's softening users up to expect it to cost real money this time around. [break]Het is overigens ook bekend geworden dat Microsoft de strategie voor WindowsMe ietwat veranderd heeft. Het was de bedoelig om het OS minder zakelijk te maken door veel LAN voorzieningen weg te laten. Via die weg zouden gebruikers meer richting Windows 2000 gepusht kunnen worden. Dit is volgens Nu.nl gelukkig niet meer het geval:[/break] Microsoft gaat waarschijnlijk meer kantoorfuncties in Windows Millennium Edition (ME) bouwen dan het aanvankelijk van plan was. Oorspronkelijk moest ME het doen zonder veel lan-voorzieningen (local area network) en met minder apparaatstuurprogramma's.

Microsoft wilde het op thuisgebruikers gerichte ME zo uit handen houden van bedrijven, zodat deze voor de zakelijke functies het veel duurdere Windows 2000 moeten aanschaffen. Volgens analistenbureau Gartner Group waren klachten van potentiële gebruikers en analisten de reden voor de softwaregigant om zijn strategie te herzien.

Windows ME komt waarschijnlijk in het derde kwartaal van dit jaar op de markt.

We kunnen straks met een gerust hart een DVD writer gaan kopen, alle soorten CD (ook DVD dus) spelers en writers die er zullen komen in de toekomst gaan waarschijnlijk voldoen aan de MultiRead 2 standaard :

With VIA introducing the Apollo Pro 133A chipset not to long ago, many have flocked away from Intel's 440BX and I820 based motherboards to see what all the commotion is about. In the past, the 133A chipset shocked many of us by displaying performance hits in many key areas, partially due to AGP issues and video transfer rates. Now that a few more manufacturers have hopped on to the Apollo Pro 133a bandwagon, we will be looking at ABIT's VT6X4, ASUS' P3V4X, and SOYO's 7VCA. Each motherboard supports AGP 4x, 100/133 FSB, PC133 SDRAM and the ATA66 standard. As you can guess, each motherboard tries to separate itself from the others by implementing many unique features and by trying to squeeze extra performance out of the chipset when compared to one another. So in this quick roundup, we will be focusing on the areas of performance, stability, overclockability and board design.

[...] As for the three boards, it looks like the ABIT board performed the best in standard/normal conditions on the 4.19 driver set. The ASUS board on the other hand, somewhat disappointed us with stability issues and average performance. Though the ASUS numbers were not too far behind, we expect them to change with a quick BIOS update. From what we have been hearing, ASUS has recently released a new BIOS (after we finished benchmarking, wouldn't you know it) which fixes some performance issues. It has been reported to post numbers matching if not beating the 440BX in the areas of memory and AGP. Now comes the Soyo. Although it was the only board that overclocked to a speed greater then 750MHz from our 500e, its standard performance is just plain slow. But with its plentiful FSB choices, the board should a great option for the extreme overclocker. In terms of where the Apollo Pro 133A chipset is going, we must say it started off rough and slow, but is now becoming a viable chipset that should find its way into many home systems. After all, the 440BX will be gone shortly leaving the i820 to fend for itself. Time will only tell what is going to happen next. The Ghost & velen anderen schrijven dat hackers op doodeenvoudige wijze honderdduizenden geheime wachtwoorden van internetprovider Sonera hebben kunnen bereiken. Als gevolg hiervan is de provider deze nacht begonnen om het password voor de mail- en homepage-server te resetten waardoor abonnees dus tijdelijk geen mail kunnen binnenhalen of homepages kunnen wijzigen / uploaden. Onderstaande stukkie afkomstig van de Telegraaf.

Een woordvoerster van het bedrijf reageerde geschrokken toen zij werd geconfronteerd met het lek, maar kondigde nog geen maatregelen aan. "We willen eerst de situatie in kaart brengen. Daarna zullen we onze klanten informeren", aldus de zegsvrouw. Gisteravond laat konden de hackers nog steeds gebruik maken van de gestolen wachtwoorden.

Ronald Boutkan van de Sonera-gebruikersclub zegt al weken geleden bij de directie van de provider aan de bel te hebben getrokken. "Het is schandalig dat al onze post al wekenlang op straat ligt. Ik betwijfel of ze de technische kennis in huis hebben om de problemen op te lossen."

Gerrie Mansur van Hit2000, een bedrijf dat is gespecialiseerd in computerbeveiliging, raadt abonnees van Sonera aan om al hun email in het vervolg onleesbaar te maken met speciale software. [break]Hieronder een stukkie uit dit bericht van de MGG gebruikersgroep:[/break] Vrijwel alle Sonera servers zijn de afgelopen weken overgenomen door hackers, of tijdelijk in het bezit geweest van hackers.

Hackers hebben de afgelopen weken via die servers vrijwel AL het verkeer van en naar Soneragebruikers afgetapt. In totaal zijn meer dan 100.000 inlognamen en wachtwoorden buit gemaakt!

De mailserver van Sonera is voor langere tijd afgetapt. Uit alle regio's (van Den Helder t/m Rotterdam) is het verkeer van gebruikers die zich in deze periode op het internet hebben begeven, afgetapt.

Hackers hebben vanaf servers, die door directie en beheer van Sonera in gebruik zijn, bestanden gekopieerd. Hierin onder meer mailtjes van personeel van Sonera waarvan een deel gemarkeerd was als 'confidential' (vertrouwelijk). Dat er bedrijfsgeheimen zijn buitgemaakt is dan ook niet ondenkbaar.

Uit onderzoek naar de beveiliging van Sonera wordt duidelijk dat Sonera geen enkele applicatie heeft draaien die hackers buiten houdt. Sonera kan dan ook, zeker voor de afgelopen vier weken, de integriteit van bestanden niet garanderen!

InMatrix heeft een handig artikel online gezet over het optimaliseren van je TV-Output die je wellicht aan je videokaart hebt hangen. Het artikel richt zich vooral op de BT869/BT868 chipset zoals die meestal gebruikt wordt voor nVidia-based kaarten. Hieronder een stukkie over AutoZoom:

Our next problem is that once the TV and Monitor resolution are set to a 1:1 ratio, we get massive overscan, and chunks of the desktop is not displayed. This prevents us from setting our video player to a full-screen mode as the screen would be truncated.

To solve this issue, I wrote a special program called AutoZoom. This program allows you to list a window, then set it's width, height and an offset from the top left position of the screen.

Using AutoZoom you can align the displayed video image so it matches exactly to the visible portion of the desktop. Using this feature, you can practically eliminate overscanning.

An additional benefit of this is, that most Display Adaptors use Bilinear or Anisotropic scaling of video so the resulting scaled video has far less scaling artifacts and the image quality can even rival professional DVD decoders, especially for Anamorphic DVD titles.

Amid the horror of Caminogate and Rambus, an increasing number of observers are singing the praises of Chipzilla's earlier chipsets, the desktop BX and the server GX. They may not be state of the art, but they have a major benefit: they work. In the case of the GX, they appear to work better than conventional wisdom would allow.

Intel's Lancewood server mobo is a dual slot 1 device with all the usual server gubbins thrown in - LAN, graphics, etc. Having two CPUs is usually reckoned to give between 1.5 and 1.75 times the performance of a single processor.

Why is it then that our reference PIII 500 machine, using a Sun River SR440BX, returns a Wintune 98 integer score of 1453.077 Mips and the Lancewood reports 2916.869 Mips rather than a best case scenario of two times the uniprocessor score? Both machines have 128MB of RAM, all three PIII 500s are the same stepping and have identical 6GB hard disks, so where do the extra Mips come from?
